While there was no radio-announcing job in Dixon, my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sp orts department. Since Dixon was where I had played high sc hool football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me. But I wasn't hired. My disappointment must have shown. "Everything happens fo r the best," Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to job hunt. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program dire ctor, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me t hey had already hired an announcer. As I left his office, my frustration boiled over. I asked aloud, "H ow can a fellow get to be a sports announcer if he can't get a j ob in a radio station?"I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, "What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?" Then he put me before a microphone and ask ed me to broadcast an imaginary game.On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of m y mother's words: "If you carry on, one day something good w ill happen. Some researchers consider that attitudes come from differences between beliefs and ideas; others believe tha t attitudes come from emotional states. Here, we focus on the effects of attitudes upon behavior, that is, upon the choices of action made by the individual. The kinds of actions taken by human beings are obviously infl uenced greatly by attitudes. Whether one listens to classical music or rock, whether one obeys the speed limit while driving , whether one encourages on e’s husband or wife to express h is or her own ideas----all are influenced by attitudes. These internal states are acqui red throughout life from situations one is faced with in the home, in the streets, and in the school.Of course, the course of action chosen by an individual in any situation will be largely determined by the particulars of that s ituation. An individual who has a strong attitude of obeying la ws may drive too fast when he is in a hurry and no police cars in sight. A child who has a strong attitude of honesty may ste al a penny when she thinks no one will notice. But the internal state which remains unchanged over a period of time, and w hich makes the individual behave regularly in a variety of situa tions, is what is meant by an attitude.Attitudes are learned in a variety of ways. They can result fro m single incidents , as when an attitude toward snakes is acq uired by an experience in childhood at the sudden movement of a snake. They can result from the individual’s experiences of success and pleasure, as when someone acquires a positiv e attitude toward doing crossword puzzles by being able to co mplete some of them. And frequently, they are learned by cop ying other people’s behavior, as when a child learns how to b ehave toward foreigners by observing the actions of his paren ts. Regardless of these differences, there is something in com mon in the learning and modification(修正) of attitudes.32. According to the passage, we know attitudes _________.A. are largely affected by one’s behaviorB. come from different situations in one’s lifeC. remain unchanged in one’s daily lifeD. could be chosen according to one’s will33. Which of the following is TRUE about the learning of attitu des?A. Attitudes are only learned through one’s success.B. Copying others’ behavior is not a good idea.C. Attitudes can be learned from one’s parents.D. Attitudes learned in danger will last longer.34. He sent an email from my cousin who told that her father, my uncle Reese, had passed away. The news made my mind go blank though I have met him less than a dozen times in my life, because Reese was the first of my parent’s siblings(兄弟姐妹) to die, and I was simply not ready for that. The memorial service was set in Florida, and I quickly decided I needed to go. I needed to be there for my father, and I needed to go for myself. Reese is about nine years older than my father, and I started to do the math in my head. I know that doesn’t make sense, but I will do anything to reason that I still have a lot of time before I will be in my cousin’s shoes.Reese’s memorial service was small with only family and perhaps a dozen of his friends. The funeral was attended by an even smaller number, and then, the family gathered at a nearby bar to look at old photographs found among Reese’s possessions when he died.As we drove back to the Orlando International Airport, I thought about how I am not sure what my parents want, not only in their memorial services, but also how they want to be remembered and where they want to be laid to rest. These are going to be difficult conversations, but I know I need to have them. Maybe not right now, but we do need to open the discussion at some point. It may feel too early, but I trust my parents will know that when adult children raise these questions, we do it out of love to honor their lives and their wishes.24. Why do emails with “FYI” make the author uneasy?A. She’s too busy to read those emails.B. She dislikes her parents’ nonstop talking.C. She’s afraid to get bad news about her parents.D. They often bring unpleasant news.25. How did the author feel about the email from her cousin?A. Disappointed.B. Shocked.C. Confused.D. Annoyed.26. What do we know from the third and fourth paragraphs?A. Not many people attended the funeral.B. A get-together was held at home.C. Reese’s friends didn’t appear.D. The author hesitated to go to Florida.27. What does the author decide to do after the funeral?A. Have a talk with her parents about death.B. Express her love for her parents bravely.C. Value her parents’ wishes.D. Get everything ready for her parents.CAn insect bee stands out on the logo of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, despite “Bee” being unrelated to the name of the insect. “Bee” refers to “a gathering”, where people join together in an activity. The National Spelling Bee, formed in 1925, was a collection of many local spelling bees, organized by Louisville. With competitions, cash prizes, and a trip to the nation’s capital, it was hoped that the bee would stimulate“general interest among pupils in a dull subject”. Mark Neuhauser won the national Spelling Bee held that year, by successfully spelling “gladiolus”. In 2014, there were two winners of the bee-a conclusion that has only happened three other times in Bee history, and not since 1962. Sriam Harthwar, a 14-year-old from New York and Ansun Sujoe, a 13-year-old from Texas shared the excitement as co-champions after 22 rounds of spelling. Each took home over $30,000 in cash, scholarship and bonds. The spelling bee has been held every year except for 1943-1945 due to World War II. Later, the Scripps Companyacquired the rights to the program in 1941. The bee is held in late May or early June of each year. It is open to students who have not yet completed the eighth grade, reach their 15th birthday, nor won a precious National Spelling Bee. Its goal is educational; not only to encourage children to perfect the art of spelling, but also to help enlarge their vocabularies and widen their knowledge of the English language.28. When did Mark win the National Spelling Bee?A. In 1925B. In 1941.C. In 1962.D. In 2014.29. What does the underlined word “stimulate” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A. influenceB. lose.C. inspire.D. show.30. We can conclude from the text that .A. Ansun is allowed to take part in the Bee again if he likesB. the goal of the Bee is more commercial than educationalC. the Bee has already been held for ninety timesD. the first prize has been shared four times in Bee history31. What’s the purpose of writing the text?A. To make people know a new kind of insect-spelling bee.B. To introduce a competition about spelling words.C. To discuss the ways of participating the Scripps National Spelling Bee.D. To share Mark Neuhauser’s pleasure of winning the competition.DDid you know that sixty percent of your body weight is water? However,a loss of only two percent of this water through dehydration(脱水)during exercise can significantly affect your performance. The more you sweat, the more your exercise performance declines, unless you drink enough to replace your loss of fluids. When you lose too much water, you can overheat quite easily, especially in a warm environment. But this is not the only problem you may faced with. Dehydration leads to your heart pumping much faster, which means exercise becomes more difficult and requires more effort. Despite these problems, however, many of us simply do not take enough fluids in when we head for the gym or set out on a run.So why is this? How do we manage to lose so much water without simply drinking more to replace it?Well,it is s easier than you think. When we are at rest,we quickly become aware that we are thirsty and will put that right by having a drink. When we exercise,on the other hand, our thirst mechanism(结构)does not work as effectively,so we don't notice early enough that we are actually thirsty. In fact,we only start to feel thirsty when we have already lost around two percent of our body weight.Another problem is that, the more dehydrated we become during exercise, the more difficult it is to preventfurther dehydration—because our stomachs become intolerant to fluids and we do not absorb water properly, just when we need it most. The key thing about fluids and exercise is to manage your intake properly—regular small amounts are better, and some should be drunk before the period of exercise begins. You also need to match your intake to the sort of exercise you are doing. For instance, for one hour of exercise, such as taking part in a 10 km run,you need to drink about two extra liters of water. For longer periods of exercise, sports drinks are recommended.32. We know from the text that during exercise,dehydration________.A. can be easily avoidedB. will lead to poor performanceC. can cause many health problemsD. will be controlled whenever we drink again33. Why do people suffer from dehydration easily during exercise?A. Their thirst mechanism stops working.B. Their focus is on the exercise.C. Their thirst response is slow.D. Their stomachs are full.34. When exercising, you are advised to________.A. have regular breaksB. drink water accordinglyC. drink sports water in advanceD. have at least two liters of water35. What would be the best title for the text?A. Keep fitB. Say no to sports!C. Time to get drinking!D. Ways to avoid dehydration第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Changnan porcelain was so in demand that early traders began calling the whole country by this town’s name. mixed by foreign tongues, Changnan transformed into China. Two million years after porcelain’s invention, the town, now called Jingezhen, is still one of the world’s most important centres for porcelain production.“The people are the most important treasure here, their roots are deep in history,” says Zhang JiA.She’s part of a new wave of designers who have come to Jingezhen to learn techniques handed down and refined(使精美) over a hundred generations. “This is the best place to study porcelain in China, perhaps in the entire world.” She adds.Chinese artists aren’t the only ones drawn here. Founded in 2005 by Caroline Cheng, the Pottery Workshop runs classes for visitors from around the world. In the Pottery Workshop’s second floor studio, I meet Trudy Golley and Paul Leather, a husband-wife duo from CanadA.Paul tells me that when he first visited Jingdezhen there were no street lamps and only dirt pavements. There were workshops but their goods were bought by traders and sold on elsewhere. These days, stylish cafés and bars pop up next to concept stores. At one such shop, I admire some tiny teacups settling on a thick wooden branch like birds. With the popularity of the Pottery Workshops, China’s young people are more interested in unique, individually-made products. But you might appreciate knowing that his is a codeword meant to inform staff that there is an emergency somewhere in the building. The idea is to avoid causing alarm among commuters(通勤者), but still get the message out to those trained to deal with the problem. The subject of secret codewords like this was raised this week on Reddit, and the discussion has attracted thousands of examples. But what codewords and signs are really out there in the wild?A good place to start is hospital emergency codes. These are often colour-coded, and one health centre in Canada has published its list online. “Code red” announces a fire, “code white” indicates a violent person while “code black” means a bomb threat is active. It’s been reported that hospital staff sometimes refer to the morgue as “Rose Cottage”, in order to avoid upsetting relatives of a patient who has recently died.“I can see very good reasons for having these codes,” says Paul Baker, a linguist at the University of Lancaster. “It may be that people are unsure when they’re giving the code so there’s no point upsetting members of the public.”Not all codes are alphanumeric(字母数字混合的). Some are visual, intended to be hidden in plain sight. As BBC Future discovered earlier this year, many banknotes feature a specific pattern of dots placed there to prevent people from photocopying money. Many copiers and scanners are programmed to spot it.And finally, the spray-painted squiggles(扭曲的线条) you see on pavements in towns and cities all over the world are codes understood by construction workers and engineers. For example, in UK, different colours are related to different types of cable or pipe. Blue meant a water system while yellow indicated gas lines and green labelled CCTV or data wiring. All of these codes have a purpose—to avoid causing panic, to transmit subtle signals in social groups, or to provide technical information quickly and easily. “People don’t like secrets, do they?” says Baker. “There is a drive to have as much information as possible—we do live in the information age,” he adds.32.The following are purposes of the secret codes except ________.A.to avoid causing alarm and panic among the public.B.to send sensitive signals in social groups.C.to provide technical information quickly and easily.D.to make people believe you are wiser.33.The underlined word “morgue” in Para.3 refers to the room in a hospital ______.A.where patients are treatedB.where dead bodies are keptC.where a patient has an operationD.where a surgeon cuts open the patient in case of emergency34.How many kinds of secret codes are mentioned in the passage? ______.A.2.B.3.C.4.D.5.35.Which of the following could be the best title of the passage? ______.A.The Secret Codes You Probably don’t knowB.Where to Find the CodesC.The Origin of Different CodesD.Secrets in the Modern Society第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.Life is a cyclical courseLife is a cyclical course of lessons, growth and expansion. Later, the Scripps Company acquired the rights to the program in 1941. In fact,we only start to feel thirsty when we have already lost around two percent of our body weight.Another problem is that, the more dehydrated we become during exercise, the more difficult it is to prevent further dehydration—because our stomachs become intolerant to fluids and we do not absorb water properly, just when we need it most.

AWELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ---- About 140 pilot whales that stranded(使...搁浅) themselves on a remote stretch of New Zealand beach have died, but conservation workers and volunteers are hoping the remaining 60 or so will survive after they managed to get them refloated, an official said Saturday. The geography of Farewell Spit on the South Island seems to work against whales, which regularly become stranded there. The stranding of 198 whales on Friday was one of the largest in recent years and inspired 80 workers and volunteers to help out. By late Saturday, 140 of the whales had died, said Department of Conservation area manager Andrew Lamason. He said the workers and volunteers worked throughout the day to keep the surviving whales watered and covered before refloating them during Saturday night’s high tide. “We’ve had a really good crew of volunteers, and people have been wanting to come from all over the country,” Lamason said. He said the surviving whales had moved to deeper water. But he cautioned that although hopes fortheir survival were high, whales had been refloated in the past only to return and get stranded again. Lamason said the scale(规模) of the stranding has been tough on the helpers, both physically and mentally. “It’s very sad, they’re very intelligent animals,” he said. “The common view is that it’s part of nature.” The focus will now turn to the dead whales, and the enormous task of dealing with the remains, Lamason said, adding that in the past helpers have typically buried them in the sand, but that he’s not sure what the approach will be this time. He said the department had been experimenting with moving the the dead whales into the water, which has the advantage of providing food for other sea creatures. 21. What is the exact number of whales strandedlast Friday A. 198 B.140. C. 80. D.60 22. Why did the volunteers have to wait until Saturday before they could refloat the whales A. Because they were very busy on Friday. B. Because the whales were too intelligent.C. Because they had to wait for the sea water to rise.D. Because the whales were buried deep in the sand. 23. Which of thefollowing words can be used to describe La mason’s attitude towards the result of refloating the whales A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful. C. Positive.D. Careless. 24. How will the volunteers deal with the dead whales this time according to Lamason ? A. They will bury them in the sand.B. They do not have any exact idea yet.C. They will throw them into the ocean.D. They will feed them to other sea creatures.BFree Wi-Fi has become very important to us: many stores and shopping malls offer it, restaurants use it to attract customers, andfor libraries and coffee shops it is a must-have service. Even when people are traveling, they scan for free Wi-Fi. When selecting or rating a hotel, six in ten travelers believe that unlimited Wi-Fi is the most important factor. “Today, people will never forget to pack their smart phones, tablets and laptops into the suitcase,” said the Daily Mail. “We rely on free Wi-Fi heavily when traveling—especially when it comes to checking social media, checking out travel tips, and accessing websites.” However, despite the opportunities that free Wi-Fi gives us, “our over-reliance on technology has come at a price, with travelers feeling unable to escape social media”, said Lonely Planet, theworld’s largest travel guide brand. Anita Isalska, Lonely Planet editor and tech addict, was forced to unplug when in an isolated (隔绝的) camp in Greenland recently. “Adjusting to this slower pace, I began to realize that: social media had changed into a habit,” she wrote. “I had believed I was capturing(捕捉) moments, but in reality my busy fingers were preventing me enjoying travel’s deepest pleasures. How fully can you appreciate a huge glacier or wild flowers when your brain is selecting the right photo filter (滤镜) or the perfect six seconds to take photos” In September, Lonely Planet rel eased 10 predictions for the future of global travel. One of them was that true escapes will be highly valued in future, so remote hotels will start to make their lack of the Internet into an appealing feature. Would you like to have an unplugged holiday 25. According to the passage, people nowadays tend to do the following EXCEPT . A. getting out of a library that has no access to the Internet B. thinking ill of a hotel without Wi-Fi C. makingtravel plans via the InternetD. enjoying travelling better without carrying any Hi-Tech equipment 26. Through the fourth paragraph, the author intends to . A. give more evidence to the view mentioned B. show a different opinion onthe topic C. get into another topic D. summarize the previous paragraphs 27. What has Anita Isalska realized in Greenland ? A. Travelers cannot survive without Hi-Tech. B. Taking pictures doesn’t affect appreciating nature. C. Her over-reliance on technology has come at a price.D. Her fingers are not flexible enough to take enough pictures.28. What does “an unplugged holiday” mean in the last paragraph ? A. A camping holiday. B A holiday in a remote hotel.C. A holiday without Wi-Fi.D. A holiday without taking pictures.C“BANG!” the door caused a reverberation (回声). It was just standing there, with father standing on one side, and me on the other side. We were both in great anger. “Never set foot in this houseagain!” stormed father. With tears welling up in my eyes, I rushed out of the flat and ran along the street. The street lights were shining, causing rather sad feelings. I wandered aimlessly. A young father who held a child in his arms walked past me. I felt as if I saw my childhood from another space: happy and carefree. But now … I don’t know whether it is because I have grown up or because dad is getting old. We differin our ways of thinking. We are just like two people coming from two different worlds. It feels like there is an iron door between us thatcan never be opened. I wandered the streets, without a destination in mind. My heart was frozen on this hot summer night. As I walked on,there were fewer and fewer people on the streets, until I had only the street lights to keep me company. When I finally reached the high-rise apartment block in which I lived, I saw that the light was still on. I thought to myself: “Is father waiting for me, or is he still angry with me” In fact, it was nothing. Perhaps, dad was throwing away some of his old stamps. Perhaps he thought they were useless. I never had the courage to tell him that I liked collecting stamps. All the lights were off except father’s. Dad was always like this. Maybe he didn’t know how to express himself. After shouting at me, he never showed any mercy or any moments of regret. This was how he always was. He has been a leader for so long that telling everyone else what to do has become his second nature. The light was still on. “Am I wrong” I whispered, maybe… With the key in my hand, I was as nervous as I had ever been. At last, I decided to open the door. As soon as I opened the door, tearsran down my cheeks. I suddenly realized that the iron door that I had imagined between us did not exist at all. Love----it’s second to none.29. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage ?A. The author fully understood why he and his father had different thinking.B. The author and his father lacked communication.C. The author’s father didn’t approve of his stamp collecting.D. The author’s father opened the door for him when he came back. 30. According to the author, why did his father often shout at him ? A. Perhaps the father was getting older and older. B. Perhaps the father had been used to doing that. C. Perhaps the son had already grown up. C. Perhaps they never agreed with each other. 31. What did the author mean by the underlined sentence “My heart was frozen on this hot summer night”? A. He felt lonely because there were so few people on the street. B. He felt uncomfortable because it was a very hot night. C. He was at a loss because he had nowhere to go. D. He was completely disappointed with his father. 32. What was the author’s attitude towards his father at the end of the story? A. He was frustrated with his father. B. He loved his father. C. He was afraid of his father. D. He was dissatisfied with his fatherDMany people have wondered what makes the oceans rise and fall on the word’s beaches twice a day. Those tides are caused by the force of the Moon’s gravity and the rotation(自转) of the Earth. Gravity acts on the center of any solid object. The Earth is mostly molten(熔化的) rock, but compared to the oceans, we can think of it as a solid object. As you know, the oceans are fluid and lie on the surface of the Earth. When the Moon is overhead, the oceans are four thousand miles closer to t he Moon than the Earth’s center is. Because the oceans are closer, the Moon pulls harder on the water than on the Earth. This stronger pull makes the water bunch up(集中) a little under the Moon, creating a high tide.At the same time, the oceans on the opposite side of the Earth are four thousand miles farther from the Moon than the Earth’s center is. The Moon’s pull on this water is weak. This water bunches up because it is “left behind”(making another high tide) as the Earth is pulled slightly towards the Moon. When the waters bunch up on these two sides of the Earth, they draw water away from the other sides of the Earth, which creates the low tides. As the Earth rotates, different parts of the land and oceans pass through the high-tide and low-tide zones. And that makes the waters on our coasts go up and down.33. According to the passage, there would be no tides if there were no ______.A.Earth rotationB.gravity from the EarthC. gravity from the MoonD. Moon’s gravity or Earth rotation34. The moon’s pull has a weak effect on the oceans on the opposite of the Earth, .A. so there is a low tide.B. so the water there doesn’t bunch upC. but it can still make a high tide.D. because the Earth’s gravity there is greater.35. Which of the following facts can be inferred from the passage?.A. Low-tide zones are near to high-tide zones.B. The oceans of the Earth are a whole body.C. High-tide zones are separated from low-tide zones.D.The Earth’s surface is 4000 miles away f rom the Moon.

Young designers sell their creations, from fine tea sets tohand-pained ceramic(瓷质的) earrings. I could be in east London, that is, until standard Chinese tones remind me I’m in Jingdezhen, a small Chinese city.Centuries ago, when Europeans first saw Chinese porcelain, for example, it seemed so fine that they concluded it must have been made with magic and called it “white gold”.They couldn’t find out how it was made, but they knew where it came from: the town of Changnan. It’s been reported that hospital staff sometimes re fer to the morgue as “Rose Cottage”, in order to avoid upsetting relatives of a patient who has recently died.“I can see very good reasons for having these codes,” says Paul Baker, a linguist at the University of Lancaster. ______.A.2. The man on its back insisted it was like a roughmat, while the man who happened to touch the teeth argued that it was actually like a carrot. Disagreeing with both of them the third man leaning against its body believed firmly that it was like a wall. Finally, the fourth man holding its tail believed in the shape of a grass rope.Of courts, none of them is right, since they just take part of a thing as the whole. Judging things from as many sides as possible is a skill that needs improving all the way. We should draw lessons from this picture and don’t be short-sighted.。
