Today, I stand before you to share with you a piece of English poetry, which I believe holds great significance in our lives. It is a poem that speaks of love, life, and the beauty of nature. The poem I will recite
is "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" by Dylan Thomas.
Let us begin.
"Rage, rage against the dying of the light,
Though wise men at their end know dark is their hour.
And listen to the still small voice say
Do not go gentle into that good night."
The first line of the poem, "Rage, rage against the dying of the light," captures the essence of the poem. It conveys the idea that we should
fight against the inevitable, even if we know that our time is limited. The word "dying" suggests the fragility of life, while "light"
represents hope and the beauty of the world.
In the second line, "Though wise men at their end know dark is their hour," the poet emphasizes the understanding that comes with age. Wise men, having experienced the ups and downs of life, realize that the dark hour is a natural part of life. However, this does not mean they should surrender to it.
The third line, "And listen to the still small voice say," introduces a new element to the poem. The "still small voice" represents the inner voice that encourages us to fight against the darkness. It serves as a reminder that we have the strength to overcome our fears and doubts.
In the fourth line, "Do not go gentle into that good night," the poet makes a direct appeal to the reader. He asks us not to submit to the darkness, but to stand up and fight. The phrase "good night" can be interpreted as the end of life, and the poet is urging us to embrace
life fully and passionately until the very end.
As we continue, the poem takes on a more dramatic tone. The poet describes the suffering of his father, who is battling illness and death.
In the fifth line, "Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight," the poet conveys the idea that even in the face of death, some people have the ability to see the truth clearly.
The sixth line, "Blind men cast their eyes and see the darkness," highlights the irony that some people, despite being blind, can perceive the darkness more vividly than those who see. This serves as a reminder that our perception of the world is not always accurate.
The poem reaches its climax in the seventh line, "But the eyes are not yet blind, nor the heart." The poet emphasizes that our eyes and hearts still have the capacity to see and feel, even in the darkest of times. This line reinforces the message that we should never give up hope.
As we approach the end of the poem, the poet reminds us of the importance of fighting for what we believe in. In the eighth line, "Why should they go gentle into that good night?" the poet questions the inevitability of death and the need to accept it passively.
Finally, in the last line, "Rage, rage against the dying of the light," the poem concludes with a powerful and uplifting message. The poet encourages us to fight against the darkness, to cherish life, and to never give up hope.
In conclusion, "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" by Dylan Thomas
is a powerful and inspiring poem that encourages us to embrace life and fight against the darkness. It reminds us that we have the strength to overcome our fears and doubts, and that we should never go gently into that good night.
Thank you for listening.。
