Faced with a challenging job market, former Cambridge students Ed Moyse and Ross Harper are painting different company logos on to their faces.Anyone can buy the advertising space, from businesses to individuals or groups, on a day-to-day basis. The logos -- which can be viewed at -- are then seen by everyone they pass as they go about their daily business. The graduates, who met on their first day at Selwyn College, Cambridge, started the business on October 1 and said they made £3,500 in the first 10 days. The boys said they are “armed only with massive student debt and a firm grasp of the principles of viral advertising” as they attempt to survive for a year merely on income earned by transforming themselves into walking advertisements.Mr. Harper, 21, from Greenwich, south London, who studied neuroscience, said, “It's our untraditional way of paying off our student debt. The graduate job market is incredibly unfriendly, and so we thought we’d try and go through it altogether. We've seen so many students unsuccessfully applying for jobs, only to eventually settle in a career that they never really wanted. It's just something a bit different and has taken off quite nicely.”Mr. Moyse, 22, from Poole, Dorset, said, “It is well beyo nd our expectations, but we always knew it had value and is novel and crazy.”“So far, one of the main contributors has been online betting agency, Paddy Power, ”Mr. Harper said.Mr. Moyse, who studied economics, and Mr. Harper came up with the idea after graduating in thesummer as a scheme that would not require much investment.65.The two graduates set up a business of selling advertising space on their faces because ______.A. they both have handsome facesB. they have gained best educationC. they have student loan to repayD. they can possibly find no jobs66. To keep the public informed of the time arrangement of the swimming pools.D. To help students acquire some latest information about the swimming pools.( C )With the emergence of the technological age, it has become increasingly difficult to be a knowledgeable person: There is just too much information to know something about everything. So what should an educated person be in the twenty-first century? It isn’t always clear whether one should try to become a specialist or a generalist in today’s world. In the 1960s, most American colleges and universities offered a generalist approach to education. In response to student protests, universities began offering many innovative courses, such as Asian Studies and African Studies. Students began “doing their own thing,” taking courses in just about every subject imaginable. But as university students began to focus on more and more of these less common subject areas, critics began to air their opinions. They believed that much of education had become useless. Employers also began to make comment about the quality of college graduates, saying that as jacks-of-all-trades, they could “function” in most areas of life but might never “expert” in any. As a result, the college degree of the 1960s was looked down on by many. From the 1970s through the 1990s, with new technologies creating new job opportunities, an emphasis on specialization appeared in American education. More vocational courses were offered in colleges and universities, especially as computer-programming jobs became available. Many more business schools were established, allowing more and more graduates to enter fields that offered specialized jobs with high salaries, such as investment banking and stock trading. But with the media coverage of the crimes committed by insider-information spreader on Wall Street, even the reputation of the MBA degree was soiled. The more narrowly focused approach to professional education also seemed to fail. One of the puzzles of the twenty-first century is whether to approach modern education in terms of the generalist or the specialist. Some universities require all students to take common courses from a broad range of subjects, appealing to the generalist approach to education. Yet choosing the core courses in light of today’s explosion in information and multicultural student populations has not been an easy task. How does one select what it is that everyone should know? Other universities continue to tailor their courses to the more immediate professional needs of their students, appealing to the specialist approach to education. But without a core curriculum(核心课程), students often lack the shared knowledge necessary to participate effectively in an integrated(综合的)society.72. In the 1960s, the college degree was viewed as nonsense because ______.A. students did their own things without care about realityB. too general an approach failed to meet social expectationsC. some innovative courses focused on too neglected subjectsD. the generalist approach was adopted in most US universities73. The crime on the Wall Street is mentioned in the passage in order to prove ______.A. specialists with high salaries took risksB. the MBA degree was not worthy of its nameC. specialist approach to education was far from perfectD. jobs like computer-programming were more practicable74. The author’s attitude toward the college education i n the 21st century is ______.A. positiveB. negativeC. neutralD. ironic (讽刺的)75. What might be the best title for this passage?A. History of College Educational ApproachesB. College Preparatory Education for the Changing WorldC. Generalization or Specialization, A Hard Choice for UniversitiesD. Difference Between Generalist Education and Specialist EducationSection CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from the list A - F for each76.You cannot change the laws of physics, but could physics actually enable us to travel through time? It might sound crazy, but according to Einstein ’s theories, there ’s no logical reason why time travel isn ’t possible and there are now scientists looking into it as a serious scientific proposal, at least at a theoretical level.77. Put simply, Einstein ’s idea was that every object in the universe has its own “time ”, and these vary as objects move. The faster an object moves, the slower its time is, compared to the time of a slower moving object. The extreme situation would be if an object could move as fast as the speed of light, its time would be completely stopped. But whatever an object ’ --- or person ’s --- time is, it ’s only evident in contrast to other objects. In other words, they ’re all relative.78. In 1971, after Einstein ’s death, two scientists were able to carry out a crucial experiment. They used two atomic clocks, synchronized them and placed one on a plane, while the other stayed in the same location on Earth. The plane then flew around the world for 80 hours. According to Einstein ’s theory, the clock on the plane would be expected to have lost time, due to being in motion over 80 hours compared tothe clock on the ground. When they brought the clocks together and made a comparison, the clock on the plane was indeed a few nanoseconds slower than the other clock.79.So, time is warped --- and this opens up the possibility that we might be able to somehow manipulate it as a mode of travel one day. Already one scientist has published a paper in which he detailed how to build a time machine.80. If it were possible, however, it would present some pretty knotty paradoxes. For example, what if someone or something traveled back in time and changed the future? And have you heard the one about the time traveler who dots back and forward in time and by means of various medical technologies is able to be his own father AND mother?! And besides, if time travel is possible, where are all the people from the future----surely they ’d want to come and meet us poor stranded 21st century beings?Section DDirections: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. Many expensive nutrition additives advertised on TV say they can improve your memory, but only ordinary food and health habits have been shown to work.A research team from UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles) has designed a four-step plan to improve your memory in just 14 days. “It sounds like another advertisement, but it really works,” says UCLA professor Gary Small. The team found the four-step plan improved memory function in teenagers under stress and older people. After a two-week study that included crossword puzzles, exercise and diet changes, test subjects’ memories worked more efficiently. Here’s the program:Memory training : Train yourself with brain-teaser, crossword puzzles and memory exercises that train verbal skills throughout the day.Healthy diet : Eat five rather than three meals a day. The food should be rich in omega-3 fats, such as whole grains and vegetables that contain antioxidants(抗氧化剂). Having frequent meals helps increase blood glucose (血糖), the primary energy source for the brain.Physical fitness : Have regular physical exercise such as walking, basketball or running, every day.Stress reduction : Perform stretching and relaxation exercises. Stress causes the body to release a chemical that can shrink the memory centers in the brain.Before-and-after brain scans showed that test subjects experienced on the average a 5 per cent increase in working memory.

He found on arriving at the port that all his relatives were having a large party. He was in such a happy mood and in the joy of the moment, he did not even bother changing his grey flannel(法兰绒)suit which had become a little worn during the trip home. When he entered the brilliantly lit room, his relatives and friends gave him a rather cold welcome because they had noticed his modest suit and immediately imagined that he had come back a poor man.A young man who happened to be accompanying him was quite irritated at this and said to Willy, ―What a wonderful reception you have received from these people. They have not even the intention of shaking your hand after all these years that you have been away from home.‖―Just w ait and see!‖ whispered Willy, ―They will soon change their looks!‖ Saying this he slipped a precious ring on his finger. The passage is most probably a ______.A. news storyB. feature articleC. commercial advertisementD. survey reportSection CA. How can you select your test location?B. How many times do you plan to take the test?C. When do you have to submit your test scores?D. What is the most appropriate test date for you?E. Where do you stand in your high school coursework?F. What are the factors determining your choice of test time?76.The ACT is offered nationally several times a year, between September and June. However,it's not offered at every test center on each test date. If you need to take the ACT on a day other than Saturday because of religious reaso ns, you’ll want to be especially attentive in selecting a test date because the non-Saturday dates are less frequent and are held at fewer test centers. 77. One of the first things you should find out, then, is where the ACT is being offered in your area. A quick and easy way to get that information is by accessing ACT's website at . Or your high school guidance counselor should be able to give you that information. It's also printed in the booklet Registering for the ACT , which is available free from your school counselor. Often, your own or a neighboring school will serve as a test center. 78. One important decision you need to make is whether you should take the ACT during your junior or your senior year in high school. A number of factors will affect this decision. First, you should find out when colleges you're interested in need to have your test scores. Is there a special program or scholarship for which you want to apply? If so, is there a deadline by which you need to have test scores submitted to the college or agency? Score reports are normally mailed about 3-7 weeks after the test date. Just be sure you're doing everything, including taking the ACT, early enough to keep all your options open.79.Another consideration in deciding when to take the ACT is where you stand in your high school coursework. If you're in a college-prep program and taking a lot of courses in English, mathematics, and science in your sophomore and junior years, it may be wise for you to take the ACT in your junior year, while those subjects are still fresh in your memory. If, on the other hand, you're studying material covered on the ACT during your senior year, it's reasonable to assume that your performance on the ACT might be better then.80.Perhaps you'll decide to take the ACT more than once, in hopes of improving your score. In that case, it's probably better to take the exam in your junior year to allow time for a second try. There are several advantages to taking the ACT in your junior year: (i) You probably will have completed much of the coursework corresponding to the material covered on the ACT. (ii)You'll have your ACT scores and other information in time to help make decisions about your final year of high school coursework. (iii) You'll have your ACT scores and information from colleges in time to make decisions about visiting campuses or contacting schools.Section DThe Mayan Indians lived in Mexico for thousands of years before the Spanish arrived in the 1500s. The Maya were an intelligent, culturally rich people whose achievements were many. They had farms, beautiful palaces, and cities with many buildings. The Mayan people knew a lot about nature and the world around them. This knowledge helped them to live a better life than most people of that time. Knowledge about tools and farming, for instance, made their work easier and more productive. In ancient Mexico there were many small clearings in the forest. In each clearing was a village with fields of corn, beans, and other crops around it. To clear the land for farms, the Maya cut down trees with stone axes. They planted seeds by digging holes in the ground with pointed sticks. A farmer was able to grow crops that produced food for several people. But not every Maya had to be a farmer. Some were cloth makers, builders, or priests(教士).Measuring time was important to the Maya, for farmers needed to know when to plant and harvest their crops. Mayan priests made a system to keep track of time. They studied the Sun, Moon, stars, and planets. They made a calendar from what they learned. The year was divided into 18 months of 20 days each with five days left over. The Mayan calendar was far more accurate than the European calendars of the time.Around the year 800, the Maya left their villages and beautiful cities, never to return. No one knows why this happened. They may have died from an infectious disease. They may have left because the soil could no longer grow crops. Archaeologists(考古学家)are still trying to find the lost secrets of the Maya. They are still one of our greatest mysteries.(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN THIRTEEN WORDS.)81. ________ helped Mayan people live a better life than most other people.82. You know Maya farming was most productive from the fact that several people_____.83. Why did Mayan priests make the Mayan calendar?84. When did Maya civilization collapse?第II卷I.
