The exhilarating thrill of a memory challenge.A jovial assembly gathered within the hallowed halls of the auditorium, their anticipation palpable. The intrepid contestants, their minds honed to razor-sharpness, eagerly awaited the commencement of the cerebral battle. As the clocktower chimed the appointed hour, a hush fell upon the throng. The esteemed adjudicator, a renowned scholar with an encyclopedic memory, took to the stage. With a mischievous gleam in his eye, he unveiled the rules of the contest. The competitors would be presented with a diverse array of facts, figures, and quotations. Their task was to commit these fragments of knowledge to memory and subsequently recall them with impeccable accuracy. The tension in the air was as thick as treacle as the first question was posed. The contestants grappled with the challenge, their faces a tapestry of concentration. Some whispered incantations under their breath, while others paced restlessly, their minds racing through the labyrinth of their memories. As the seconds ticked away, the pressure mounted, threatening to overwhelm even the most seasoned competitors. One by one, the contestants took to the stage, their voices trembling slightly as they recited the fruits of their mental labor. The audience listened intently, their own memories tested as they marveled at the prodigious feats of recall. Some stumbled, their voices faltering, while others delivered their lines with unwavering confidence. As the final contestant stepped forward, the atmosphere was electric. The fate of the competition hung in the balance. With a deep breath, he began his recitation. The words flowed from his lips like a cascading waterfall, each syllable perfectly enunciated, each fact impeccablyrecalled. The audience erupted in thunderous applause, their admiration evident. In a dramatic crescendo, the adjudicator announced the victor. A young woman, her face radiant with pride, had emerged triumphant. The auditorium erupted in a chorus of cheers and accolades. The memory challenge had not only tested the limits of human cognition but had also forged an unbreakable bond between the competitors.

Good morning, esteemed judges, honorable guests, and fellow competitors. It is with great honor and gratitude that I stand before you today to deliver my recitation piece for the Workplace English Skills Competition.Today, I have chosen to present a passage that highlights the paramount importance of communication and collaboration in the modern workplace. In an era defined by technological advancements and global interconnectedness, the ability to express oneself effectively, both verbally and in writing, has become more crucial than ever before. As the saying goes, "a closed mouth gathers no food." In the workplace, this adage translates into the necessity of actively participating in discussions, asking questionswhen needed, and sharing one's ideas and perspectives. By doing so, we not only contribute to the collective knowledge pool of our team but also demonstrate our enthusiasm, engagement, and willingness to be a valuable member of the organization.Collaboration is another indispensable ingredient for workplace success. When individuals come together to work on a common goal, they bring with them their unique strengths, experiences, and viewpoints. By harnessing this diversity of thought, teams can generate innovative solutions, overcome challenges, and achieve results that would not be possible for any one individual working alone. However, effective communication and collaboration require more than just words. They necessitate active listening, empathy, and the ability to bridge cultural and generational gaps. In today's highly diverse workplaces, it is essential to be mindful of different communication styles, perspectives, and values. By embracing inclusivity and fostering a respectful work environment, we can create a space where everyone feels valued and empowered tocontribute.Technology has undoubtedly transformed the way we communicate and collaborate in the workplace. From video conferencing to instant messaging, from cloud-based collaboration tools to social intranets, technology has made it easier than ever before to connect with colleagues and share information. However, it is important to remember that technology is merely a tool. It is the human element of communication and collaboration that makes it truly effective. In closing, I believe that the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively is not only a valuable skill but also a fundamental requirement for success in the modern workplace. By embracing open communication, fostering collaboration, and leveraging technology while maintaining the human touch, we can build stronger teams, achieve greater results, and contribute to a more positive and productive work environment.Thank you.

I have participated in many English recitation competitions, and I have prepared a collection ofrecitation texts in both English and Chinese. These texts cover a wide range of topics, from literature and history to science and technology. I believe that by reciting these texts, I can improve my English speaking skills and expand my knowledge. One of my favorite recitation texts is a poem called "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. This poem talks about the choices we make in life and how they can have a profound impact on our future. The poem begins with the famous lines, "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both." These lines immediately capture the reader's attention and make them think about the choices they have made in their own lives.Another recitation text that I enjoy is a speech by Martin Luther King Jr. called "I Have a Dream." This speech is a powerful call for equality and justice, and it has become one of the most famous speeches in history. In this speech, King talks about his dream of a world where people are judged by the content of their character, rather than the color of their skin. His words are inspiring and remind us of the importance of standing up for what we believe in.In addition to these texts, I also have a collection of short stories and essays that I have used for recitation competitions. These texts allow me to explore different genres and styles of writing, and they also help me improve my reading comprehension skills. For example, I have a short story called "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry, which tells the story of a young couple who sacrifice their most prized possessions to buy each other Christmas gifts. This story teaches us about the true meaning of love and selflessness.

The chosen poem should be one that resonates with the speaker on a personal level, allowing them to convey genuine emotion and passion.

A GentlemanIt is almost a definition of gentleman to say he is one who never inflict pains. This description is both refined and, as far as it goes, accurate. He is mainly occupied in merely removing the obstacles which hinder the free and unembarrassed action of those about him; and he concurs with their movements rather than takes the initiative himself. The true gentleman in like manner carefully avoids whatever may cause a jar or jolt in the minds of those with whom he is cast, all clashing of opinion ,or collision of feeling ,all restraint ,or suspicion, or gloom ,or resentment; his great concern being to make every one at their ease and at home. He has his eyes on all his company: he is tender towards the bashful, gentle towards the distant, and merciful towards the absurd; he can recollect to whom he is speaking; he guards against unseasonable allusions, or topics which may irritate; he is seldom prominent in conversation, and never wearisome. He makes light of favors while he does them, and seems to be receiving when he is conferring. He never speaks of himself except when compelled, never defends himself by mere retort, he has no ears for slander or gossip, is scrupulous in imputing motives to those who interfere with him, and interprets every thing for the best. He is never mean or little in his disputes, never takes unfair advantage, never mistakes personalities or sharp saying for arguments, or insinuates evil which he dare not say out.DespairIn the dull twilight of the winter afternoon she came to the end of the long road which had begun the night Atlanta fell. She had set her feet upon that road a spoiled, selfish and untried girl, full of youth, warm of emotion, easily bewildered by life. Now, at the end of the road, there was nothing left of that girl. Hunger and hard labor, fear and constant strain, the terrors of war and the terrors of Reconstruction had taken away all warmth and youth and softness. About the core of her being, a shell of hardness had formed and, little by little, layer by layer, the shell had thickened during the endless months. But until this very day, two hopes had been left to sustain her. She had hoped that the war being over, life would gradually resume its old face. She had hoped that Ashley`s return would bring back some meaning into life .Now both hopes were gone. The sight of Jonas Wilkerson in front walk of Tara had made her realize that for her, for her whole south, the war would never end. The bitterest fighting, the most brutal retaliations, were just beginning. And Ashley was imprisoned forever by words which were stronger than any jail.Peace had failed her and Ashley had failed her, both in the same day and it was as if the last crevice in the shell had been sealed, the final layer hardened. She had become what Grandma Fontaine had counseled against, a woman who had seen the worst and so had nothing else to fear. Not life nor Mother nor loss of love nor public opinion. Only hunger and her nightmare dream of hunger could make her afraid.Extreme BusynessExtreme busyness, whatever at school or college, church or market, is a symptom of deficient vitality; and a faculty for idleness implies a catholic appetite and a strong sense of personal identity. There is a sort of dead-alive, hackneyed people about, who are scarcely conscious of living except in the exercise of some conventional occupation. Bring these fellows into the country, or set them aboard ship, and you will see how they pine for their desk or their study. They have no curiosity; they cannot give themselves over to random provocations; they do not take pleasure in the exercise of their faculties for its own sake; and unless Necessity lays about them with a stick, they will even stand still. It is good speaking to such folk: they cannot be idle, their nature is not generous enough; and they pass those hours in a sort of coma, which are not dedicated to furious moiling in the good-mill. When they do not require to go to the office, when they are not hungry and have no mind to drink, the whole breathing world is a blank to them. If they have to wait an hour or so for a train, they fall into a stupid trance with their eyes open. To see them , you would suppose there was nothing to look at and no one to speak with; you would imagine they were paralyzed or alienated; and et very possibly they are hard workers in their own way, and have good eyesight for a flaw in a deed or a turn of the market. They have been to school and college, but all the time they had their eyes on the medal; they have gone about in the world and mixed with clever people, but all the time they were thinking of their own affairs.Flattery on womenWomen have, in general, but one object, which is their beauty; upon which scarce any flattery is to gross for them to follow. Nature has hardly formed a woman ugly enough to be insensible to flattery upon her person; if her face is so shocking that she must, in some degree, be conscious of it, her figure and air, she trusts, make ample amends for it. If her figure is deformed, her face, she thinks, counterbalances it. If they are both bad, she comforts herself that she has graces, a certain manner, still more engaging than beauty. This truth is evident from the studied and elaborate dress of the ugliest woman in the world. An undoubted, uncontested, conscious beauty is, of all women, the least sensible of flattery upon that head; she knows it is her due, and is therefore obliged to nobody for giving it her. She must be flattered upon her understanding; which, enough she may possibly not doubt of herself, yet she suspects that men may distrust.Do not mistake me, and think that I mean to recommend to you abject and criminal flattery: no; flatter nobody’s vices or crimes: on the contrary, abhor and discourage them. But there is no living in the world without a complaint indulgence for people’s weaknesses, and innocent, though ridiculous vanities. If a man has a mind to be thought wiser, and a woman handsomer, than they really are, their error is a comfortable one to themselves, and an innocent one with regard to other people; and I would rather make them my friends by indulging them in it, than my enemies by endeavoring to undeceive them.Three Days to SeeSometimes I have thought it would be an excellent rule to live each day as if we should die tomorrow. Such an attitude would emphasize sharply the values of life. We should live each day with a gentleness, a vigor, and a keenness of appreciation which are often lost when time stretches before us in the constant panorama of more days and months and years to come. There are those, of course, who would adopt the Epicurean motto of "Eat, drink, and be merry," but most people would be chastened by the certainty of impending death. In stories the doomed hero is usually saved at the last minute by some stroke of fortune, but almost always his sense of values is changed. he becomes more appreciative of the meaning of life and its permanent spiritual values. It has often been noted that those who live, or have lived, in the shadow of death bring a mellow sweetness to everything they do.Most of us, however, take life for granted. We know that one day we must die, but usually we picture that day as far in the future. When we are in buoyant health, death is all but unimaginable. We seldom think of it. The days stretch out in an endless vista. So we go about our petty tasks, hardly aware of our listless attitude toward life. The same lethargy, I am afraid, characterizes the use of all our faculties and senses. Only the deaf appreciate hearing, only the blind realize the manifold blessings that lie in sight. Particularly does this observation apply to those who have lost sight and hearing in adult life? But those who have never suffered impairment of sight or hearing seldom make the fullest use of these blessed faculties.SleepSleep is part of a person's daily activity cycle. There are several different stages of sleep, and they too occur in cycles. If you are an average sleeper, your sleep cycle is as follows. When you fist drift off into slumber, your eyes will roll about a bit, you temperature will drop slightly, your muscles will relax, and your breathing well slow and become quite regular. Your brain waves slow and become quite regular. Your brain waves slow down a bit too, with the alpha rhythm of rather fast waves 1 sleep. For the next half hour or so, as you relax more and more, you will drift down through stage 2 and stage 3 sleep. The lower your stage of sleep, the slower your brain waves will be. Then about 40to 69 minutes after you lose consciousness you will have reached the deepest sleep of all. Your brain will show the large slow waves that are known as the delta rhythm. This is stage 4 sleep. You do not remain at this deep fourth stage all night long, but instead about 80 minutes after you fall into slumber, your brain activity level will increase again slightly. The delta rhythm will disappear, to be replaced by the activity pattern of brain waves. Your eyes will begin to dart around under your closed eyelids as if you were looking atsomething occurring in front of you. This period of rapid eye movement lasts for some 8 to 15 minutes and is called REM sleep. It is during REM sleep period, your body will soon relax again, your breathing will slip gently back from stage 1 to stage 4 sleep----only to rise once again to the surface of near consciousness some 80 minutes later.BacteriaBacteria are extremely small living things. While we measure our own sizes in inches or centimeters, bacterial size is measured in microns. One micron is a thousandth of a millimeter: a pinhead is about a millimeter across. Rod-shaped bacteria are usually from two to four microns long, while rounded ones are generally one micron in diameter. Thus if you enlarged a rounded bacterium a thousand times, it would be just about the size of a pinhead. An adult human magnified by the same amount would be over a mile (1.6 kilometer) tall.Even with an ordinary microscope, you must look closely to see bacteria. Using a magnification of 100 times, one finds that bacteria are barely visible as tiny rods or dots. One cannot make out anything of their structure. Using special stains, one can see that some bacteria have attached to them wavy-looking "hairs" called flagella. Others have only one flagellum. The flagella rotate, pushing the bacteria through the water. Many bacteria lack flagella and cannot move about by their own power, while others can glide along over surfaces by some little- understood mechanism. From the bacteria point of view, the world is a very different place from what it is to humans. To a bacterium water is as thick as molasses is to us. Bacteria are so small that they are influenced by the movements of the chemical molecules around them. Bacteria under the microscope, even those with no flagella, often bounce about in the water. This is because they collide with the watery molecules and are pushed this way and that. Molecules move so rapidly that within a tenth of a second the molecules around a bacteria have all been replaced by new ones; even bacteria without flagella are thus constantly exposed to a changing environment. The Source of EnergyA summary of the physical and chemical nature of life must begin, not on the Earth, but in the Sun; in fact, at the Sun's very center. It is here that is to be found the source of the energy that the Sun constantly pours out into space as light and heat. This energy is librated at the center of the Sun as billions upon billions of nuclei of hydrogen atoms collide with each other and fuse together to form nuclei of helium, and in doing so, release some of the energy that is stored in the nuclei of atoms. The output of light and heat of the Sun requires that some 600 million tons of hydrogen be converted into helium in the Sun every second. This the Sun has been doing for several thousands of millions of year. The nuclear energy is released at the Sun's center as high-energy gamma radiation, a form of electromagnetic radiation like light and radio waves, only of very much shorter wavelength. This gamma radiation is absorbed by atoms inside the Sun to be reemitted at slightly longer wavelengths. This radiation, in its turn is absorbed and reemitted. As theenergy filters through the layers of the solar interior, it passes through the X-ray part of the spectrum eventually becoming light. At this stage, it has reached what we call the solar surface, and can escape into space without being absorbed further by solar atoms. A very small fraction of the Sun's light and heat is emitted in such directions that after passing unhindered through interplanetary space, it hits the Earth.IcebergsIcebergs are among nature's most spectacular creations, and yet most people have never seen one. A vague air of mystery envelops them. They come into being -- somewhere --in faraway, frigid waters, amid thunderous noise and splashing turbulence, which in most cases no one hears or sees. They exist only a short time and then slowly waste away just as unnoticed.Objects of sheerest beauty they have been called. Appearing in an endless variety of shapes, they may be dazzlingly white, or they may be glassy blue, green or purple, tinted faintly of in darker hues. They are graceful, stately, inspiring -- in calm, sunlight seas. But they are also called frightening and dangerous, and that they are -- in the night, in the fog, and in storms. Even in clear weather one is wise to stay a safe distance away from them. Most of their bulk is hidden below the water, so their underwater parts may extend out far beyond the visible top. Also, they may roll over unexpectedly, churning the waters around them.Icebergs are parts of glaciers that break off, drift into the water, float about awhile, and finally melt. Icebergs afloat today are made of snowflakes that have fallen over long ages of time. They embody snows that drifted down hundreds, or many thousands, or in some cases maybe a million years ago. The snows fell in Polar Regions and on cold mountains, where they melted only a little or not at all, and so collected to great depths over the years and centuries. As each year's snow accumulation lay on the surface, evaporation and melting caused the snowflakes slowly to lose their feathery points and become tiny grains of ice. When new snow fell on top of the old, it too turned to icy grains.British ColumbiaBritish Columbia is the third largest Canadian provinces, both in area and population. It is nearly 1.5 times as large as Texas, and extends 800 miles (1,280km) north from the United States border. It includes Canada's entire west coast and the islands just off the coast. Most of British Columbia is mountainous, with long rugged ranges running north and south. Even the coastal islands are the remains of a mountain range that existed thousands of years ago. During the last Ice Age, this range was scoured by glaciers until most of it was beneath the sea. Its peaks now show as islands scattered along the coast. The southwestern coastal region has a humid mild marine climate. Sea winds that blow inland from the west are warmed by a current of warm water that flows through the Pacific Ocean. As a result, winter temperatures average above freezing and summers are mild. These warm western winds also carry moisture from the ocean.Inland from the coast, the winds from the Pacific meet the mountain barriers of thecoastal ranges and the Rocky Mountains. As they rise to cross the mountains, the winds are cooled, and their moisture begins to fall as rain. On some of the western slopes almost 200 inches (500cm) of rain fall each year.More than half of British Columbia is heavily forested. On mountain slopes that receive plentiful rainfall, huge Douglas firs rise in towering columns. These forest giants often grow to be as much as 300 feet(90m) tall, with diameters up to 10 feet(3m). More lumber is produced from these trees than from any other kind of tree in North America. Hemlock, red cedar, and balsam fir are among the other trees found in British Columbia.。
