What would you do if you had only one day left to live?―What would you do if you had only one day left to live?‖I asked this question to my young students when teaching English this winter. What were their answers?―I would watch television!‖ the first answer. ―I would play with the computer!‖ the second one. ―I would play with computer TOO.‖ The girl finished her sentence perfectly with a serious smile. Indeed how cute and innocent that smile was, but how seriously my heart was hurt. I was too frightened to listen to more answers like that.Ten years ago, at their age, I had a different answer: I would spend the last day of my life gazing at the face of my dear grandmother until I inscribed every detail of it onto my mind. When grandmother was getting old and weak, my family bought her a telephone so I could save time and the trouble of traveling to her home by making phone calls instead. Later we bought her a television so she could watch modern dramas by herself. Then grandma must have been, we assumed, very contented and happy. But I never really knew how grandma felt. She silently passed away without a word one night. When I heard about her death, a chilling pain pierced my empty heart. The pain grew even sharper as I tried to remember in detail exactly how grandma looked and I failed completely! How could I remember? I had not visited her for ages—itseemed like a century! My memories of her dissolved into thin air and leaked away like water.Even though I have a telephone, can she hear me now?Even though I might be on television, can she see me now?Even though I have modern telecommunications, can she still communicate with me now? With all these ―tele‖s, I was powerless.Don’t people just love the word of ―tele‖, which means far away. Indeed this is how modern technology has changed our world. But please don’t forget this other word with ―tele‖: telepathy: which refers to human beings’ inborn ability to connect to our loved ones. Our minds are su pposed to read each other’s minds; our hearts are supposed to feel each other’s hearts — and fulfill these without any forms of tool! But the moment I desperately struggled to remember grandmother’s face, the telepathy between her and me had shut down forever. With the help of modern technology, I killed our telepathy. This shall never happen again! The ―tele‖s are great inventions. But ―telepathy‖ gives them the warmth of a human face. Let’s harness the power of television to excite our kids to develop the ir telepathy with nature… so that they can read the secret language of flowers. Let’s make the telephone lines provoke us to preserve our telepathy with each other, so we can connect in a warm and feeling way. Let technology keep our ―telepathy‖ ALIVE! We need to wake up and make this happen.I told my grandma’s story to those young kids that day. They got very very quiet. They asked me for a second chance to answer the question. They had come to a new understanding – that very moment they had made to me and to our future together, a dear promise.Thank you very much!。
Embracing the Complexity of English: A Path to MasteryLadies and Gentlemen,It is with great humility and profound enthusiasm that I stand before you today to share a journey that has been both challenging and transformative - the pursuit of excellence in the realm of English studies. This journey, which may seem arduous to some, has been my passion, my guide, and my compass. It has led me through the winding paths of language, literature, and culture, opening doors to insights that have shaped my understanding of the world. The study of English is not merely an exercise in grammar, vocabulary, or pronunciation; it is a discipline that encompasses the full breadth of human experience. From the sonnets of Shakespeare to the modern narratives of our time,English serves as a mirror to our collective consciousness, reflecting the complexities of our history, our values, and our aspirations. To master this language is to engage in a dialogue that transcends time and space, connecting us with the thoughts and emotions of our predecessors and our contemporaries alike. My journey began with an insatiable curiosity about the intricacies of language. The realization that words are not mere symbols but gateways to entire worlds of meaning was the catalyst for my dedication. I immersed myself in the study of etymology, delving into the origins of words and the stories they carry. Each word became a piece of a vast puzzle, revealing connections between cultures, societies, and individuals across the globe. As I progressed, I found myself drawn to the nuances of English literature. The works of Dickens, Austen, Orwell, and Woolf were not just texts to be analyzed; they were windowsinto the soul of the English-speaking world. Through their prose, I learned to appreciate the subtle art of storytelling, the power of metaphor, and the beauty of crafted sentences. The complexity of these literary works challenged me to think critically, to question assumptions, and to empathize with characters whose lives were worlds apart from my own.In my quest for mastery, I also embraced the practical aspects of language use. Public speaking, writing, andcritical analysis became second nature to me. I honed myskills through constant practice, seeking feedback, andrefining my approach. The ability to communicate effectivelyin English is not merely an academic achievement; it is atool for success in any field, a means to influence, to inspire, and to lead. However, the path to becoming a top student in Englishhas not been without its challenges. There were moments of doubt, instances of failure, and setbacks that tested myresolve. But it is precisely these moments that taught me the most valuable lessons. Perseverance, resilience, and adaptability are not passive traits; they are active choices we make in the face of adversity. Each obstacle I overcame strengthened my resolve and deepened my love for the subject matter. Moreover, my journey has been enriched by the diversity of perspectives and experiences that English allows me to explore. In studying literature from different eras and regions, I have gained a profound appreciation for the multifaceted nature of human experience. The ability to understand and empathize with diverse viewpoints is a hallmark of true intellectual growth, and it is a skill that I believe is essential for anyone who wishes to navigate the complexities of our contemporary world. As I stand here today, I am cognizant of the fact that my journey is far from over. The study of English is a lifelongendeavor, one that continues to evolve with each new text, each new conversation, and each new insight. Yet, it is this very complexity and depth that make the study of English so rewarding. It is an endless wellspring of knowledge, wisdom, and inspiration. In conclusion, let me urge each one of you to embrace the challenge of English with open hearts and minds. Whether you are a student, a teacher, or simply a lover of the written word, there is no end to what you can achieve within the boundless landscape of this magnificent language. Let us continue to explore, to question, to create, and to connect through the power of English. For in doing so, we not only master a language but also expand our horizons, enrich our souls, and contribute to the greater tapestry of humanculture and understanding.Thank you.。

When we are healthy and well-groomed, we will not only look better but also feel better. In addition, we should smile and appear friendly. After all, our facial expression is an important part of our appearance.
From Walls to BridgesI'm studying in a city famous for its walls. All visitors to my city are amazed by the imposing sight of the city walls, silhouetted by the setting sun with gold and shining lines. With old, cracked bricks patched with lichen, the walls are weather-beaten guards, standing still for centuries in protecting the city. Our ancestors liked to build walls. They built walls in Beijing, Xi'an, Nanjing and many other cities, and they built the Great Wall, which snakes through half of our country. They built walls to ward off enemies and evil spirits. This tradition has been maintained to this day as we still have many parks and schools walled off from the public. I grew up at the foot of the city walls, andI've loved them since my childhood. For a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world. My perception, however, changed after a hiking trip to the Eastern Suburbs, a scenic area of my city. My classmates and I were walking with some international students. As we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by taller and taller trees, which formed a huge canopy above our heads. Suddenly an international student asked me, "Where is the entrance to the Eastern Suburbs?""We're already in the Eastern Suburbs," I replied. He seemed taken aback, "I thought you Chinese have walls for everything." His remark set off a heated debate. At one point, he likened our walled cities to "jails," while I insisted that the Eastern第十届“21世纪·外教社杯”全国英语演讲比赛冠军-南京大学夏鹏演讲稿Suburbs were one of the many places in China that had no walls. That debate had no winners, but I did learn a lot from this international student. For instance, he told me that universities like Oxford and Cambridge were not surrounded by walls; the campuses were just part of the cities. I have to admit that we do have many walls in China, and as we are developing our country, we must carefully examine them, whether they are physical or intangible. We will keep some walls but tear down those that impede China's development.Let me give you an example. A year ago, when I was working on a term paper, I needed a book on business law and found a copy in the law school library. However, the librarian turned down my request with a cold shoulder, saying, "You can't borrow this book, you are not a student here." In the end, I had to spend 200 Yuan buying a copy; meanwhile, the copy in law school was gathering dust on the shelf. At the beginning of this semester, I heard that my university has started not only to unify its libraries but also link them up with libraries of other universities, so my experience will not be repeated. Barriers will be replaced by bridges. Through an inter-library loan system, we will have access to books from any library. With globalization, with China integrated into the world, I believe many of these intangible walls will be knocked down.I know globalization is a controversial issue, and it is hard to say whether it is good or bad. But one thing is for sure: it draws our attention to China's tangible and intangible walls and forces us to examine their roles in the modern world. And how about the ancient walls in my city and other cities? Should we tear them down? Just the opposite. My city, like Beijing and other cities, is actually making a great effort to preserve the walls. These walls attract not only historians and archeologists but also many schoolchildren trying to study our history and cultural heritage. Walls have turned into bridges to our past and to the rest of the world. If the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they would be proud to see such great change in the role of their walls. They are now bridges that link East and West, South and North, and all countries of the world. Our cultural heritage will survive globalization。

A Scene to RememberGu QiubeiShanghai International Studies UniversityAdvisor: Gong LongshengGood afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Today I would like to begin with a story. There was once a physical 1) therapist who traveled all the way from America to Africa to do a 2) census about mountain 3) gorillas. These gorillas are a main attraction to tourists from all over the world; this put them severely under threat of 4) poaching and being put into the zoo. She went there out of curiosity, but what she saw strengthened her determination to devote her whole life to fighting for those beautiful creatures. She witnessed a scene, a scene taking us to a place we never imaged we've ever been, where in the very depth of the African rainforest, surrounded by trees, flowers and butterflies, the mother gorillas 5) cuddled their babies.Yes, that's a memorable scene in one of my favorite movies, called Gorillas in the Mist, based on a true story of Mrs. Dian Fossey, who spent most of bet lifetime in Rwanda to protect the ecoenvironment there until the very end of her life.To me, the movie not only presents an unforgettable scene but also acts as a 6) timeless reminder that we should not develop the tourist industry at the cost of our ecoenvironment.Today, we live in a world of prosperity but still threatened by so many new problems. On the one hand, tourism, as one of the most promising industries in the 21st century, provides people with the great opportunity to see everything there is to see and to go any place there is to go. It has become a lifestyle for some people, and has turned out to be the driving force in GDP growth. It has the magic to turn a backward town into a wonderland of prosperity. But on the other hand, many problems can occur---natural scenes aren't natural anymore. Deforestation to heat lodges is devastating Nepal. Oil spills from tourist boats are polluting Antarctica. Tribal people are forsaking their native music and dress to listen to U2 on Walkman and wear Nike and Reeboks. All these 7) appalling(令人震惊的) facts have brought us to the realization that we can no longer stand by and do nothing, because the very thought of it has been 8) eroding(侵蚀) our resources. Encouragingly, the explosive growth of global travel has put tourism again in the spotlight, which is why the UnitedNations has made 2002 the year of ecotourism, for the first time to bring to the world's attention the benefits of tourism, but also its capacity to destroy our ecoenvironment. Now every year, many local ecoenvironmental protection organizations an: receiving donations--big notes, small notes or even coins--from housewives, 9) plumbers(水管工人), ambulance drivers, salesmen, teachers, children and 10) invalids(残疾人), Some of them can not afford to send the money but they do. These are the ones who drive the cabs, who nurse in hospitals, who are suffering from ecological damage in their neighborhood. Why? Because they care. Because they still want their Mother Nature back. Because the y know it still belongs to them. This kind of feeling that I have, ladies and gentlemen, is when it feels like it, smells like it, and looks like it, it's all coming from a scene to remember, a scene to recall and to cherish. The other night, as l saw the moon linger over the land and before it was sent into the invisible, my mind was filled with songs. I found myself humming softly, not to the music, but to some- thing else, someplace else. a place remembered, a place untouched, a field of grass where no one seem to have been except the deer. And all those unforgettable scenes strengthened the feeling that it's lime for us to do something, for our own and our coming generation.Once again, I have come to think of Mrs. Dian Fossey be- cause it's with her spirit, passion, courage and strong sense of our ecoenvironment that we are taking our next step into the world. And no matter who we are, what we do and where we go, in our mind, there's always a scene to remember, a scene worth our effort to protect it and fight for it.Thank you very much.。

仅仅是一句简单的:“good evening ladies and gentlemen..”

1When I was little, I lived in a remote village in southern China with my grandparents. Like many kids in the countryside, I enjoyed digging a hole in the opening among paddy fields, using branches and hay to bake sweet potatoes and playing hawk-and-chicken with my friends. Every Chinese New Year Eve, my grandmother would prepare our festive food called Guo. It was a tradition that neighbors help each other prepare Guo. While adults were busy pouring flour on the cutting board, pressing the paste flat and moulding it into beautiful shape, kids would run around in the village’s ancestral temple and immerse ourselves in the enchanting and cheerful smell of holiday.Having lived in the city for the following ten years, I always feel the changes happening in my hometown every time I go back--the village looks surprisingly similar to the coastal city where I live! The opening field where I baked potatoes was leveled and a manufacturing factory has been built there, blocking the sunlight of our yard. The ancestral temple has been torn down and is now a small supermarket for villagers. The number of people knowing how to prepare Guo is diminishing and young people seem to be more interested in fast food and oblivious of traditional arts and skills. The village seems quite empty because most young people have become migrant workers in cities and only return home once or twice a year.In the course of urbanization, villages gradually languish and die out when the passing on of traditions lose its population base. The total number of Chinese villages has declined from 3.7 million in 2000 to 2.6 million in 2010. Approximately 300 villages in China are disappearing every day. It’s saddening to see that many ancient villages, which survived warfare and natural disasters over thousands of years, have been demolished or annexed by cities in peacetime. Lulei Village, hometown for the famous mathematician, Chen Jingrun, was an affluent village in southern China with a history of over 700 years. Since the village obstructed the construction of the local railway station, it was almost torn down, including the former residence for Chen’s family. We Chinese have been reveling in urbanization for decades. What worries me is that one day on this way to modernization, we turn back but are unable to see the link with our origins and ancestors. When we’re surrounded by skyscrapers and neon glamour, what defines us as Chinese? Urbanization does not mean brutally encroaching upon the countryside and strangling rural culture. It should not sever the ties with our beloved homeland. While promoting the country’s economy, it should also allow space for cultural diversity. In the ideal urbanization process, we should no longer emphasize the binary opposition of city and village, but endeavor to form a reciprocal relationship between the two.Ladies and gentlemen, fallen leaves return to the roots. If we do not redefine and reorient urbanization, we will not be able to save millions of villages, neither can we revert to the origin where we belong.Thank you. 2Good afternoon, Ladies and Gentlemen:When the topic “people and nature” first caught my eye, I was reminded of a story about myself and my violin.I began learning to play the violin when I was eight years old. At first, it was a very hard thing for me. After my continued efforts, I was able to play a lot of musical pieces very soon.I felt so proud of myself that I began to behave arrogantly. My violin teacher noticed this and told me: “To be a good violin player, you should first of all love and respect your violin. You should obey the rules of playing it so as to make harmonious melodies. Remember, play the violin not only with your hands, but also with your heart and soul. ”Ladies and gentlemen, I believe that nature is to people what my violin is to me. Isn’t it true that people deal with nature just as I play the violin? Isn’t it true that we have been so arrogant that we take liberties with nature, which brings about the discord between nature and ourselves? Since my violin and I have finally reached harmony, why can’t people and nature head toward the same direction?Ladies and gentlemen, we cannot wait. Nor can we afford to wait until the day when we find no city, no Hilton hotel, no lecture hall to hold any speech contests in. Let us love and respect nature, nature that is the violin people have played for thousands of years. Let us treasure it, and play it with our heart and soul. Let us observe its rules while developing our industry, modernizing our traffic system, and improving our living conditions, so that one day, people and nature will together produce the most beautiful and peaceful music. On that day, I am sure to be there with my violin, to join theworld orchestra, in playing the ode to harmony, the eternal harmony betwee people and nature.Let my speech today be an overture to that grand symphony.Thank you. 3Distinguished judges, teachers, dear friends:Hello, everyone! My name is cheng xiang yan , I am a junior student come from life science institution .Today, I am very glad to stand here and share with you my most sincere speech‘Flying youth, master our future!’Life is a process of growing up. Saying goodbye to childhood, we step into another important time of life in the pace of young, facing new situations, dealing with different problems.....However, who can really say what the youth is ? A period of time? A belief? An attitude to life? Or anything else? actually, everyone has his ownunderstanding of young, it is a period of time of beauty and wonders, only after you have experienced the sour , sweet ,bitter and salty, can you really become a person of significance.Just like A famous poet said ‘ youth is a lovely song ,where nothing is impossible ,youth is a meaningful book, you’ll be never bored of it ;youth is a rapid river ,it keeps on flowing day and night ;youth is a cup of tea ,it shows you different kinds of tastes in your life. ’As youth is so precious, of course, we must treasure it .Don’t let the limited time pass by, grasping the young will means a better time is waiting for you in the near future. So,It’s necessary for us to prepare ourselves well for the future to come. having a view on those great men in the history of hunman being, they all made full use of their youth time to dothings that are useful to society, to the whole mankind, and as a consequence ,they are remembered by later generations, admired by everyone. so do something in the time of young, although you may not get achievements as these greatmen did ,though not for the whole world, just for youeself, for those around! So, what should we do when we are young? Here,I’ll point out some tips to help equip ourselves.First of all, think of what you’d like to be some day. A teacher ? A doctor ? A writer? Don’t afraid of dreaming of big and great .Since you are young , you can dream of doing anything and becoming anyone in the future. What’s more , never ignore the power of knowledge. Read more books and travel around. For one thing, it can increase your knowledge, for another, it’ll broaden your horizon.Last but not the least , stick to your dream. It easier said than done. After all, future is not all roses. young is just like blooming flowers, they are so beautiful when blooming, which make people feel happy, but with time passing by, after they withers ,most people think they are ugly. and so it is the same with young, we are enthusiastic when we are young, then we may lose our passion when getting older and older. So we should have enough courage and determination to overcome all the difficulties in struggling on the road.I firmly believe one sentence that‘If you think you can, of course you can!’Just believe we can make it! Keep on walking towards our dream. Flying youth , master our future. From today, from now on , are you Ready ?That’s all. Thank you so much for your attention ! 4Dear teacher and classmates:I am very glad to make a speech here in this class again! This time, I'd like to talk something about English.I love English. English language is now used everywhere in the world. It has become the most common language on Internet and for international trade. Learning English makes me confident and brings me great pleasure. When I was seven, my mother sent me to an English school. At there, I played games and sang English songs with other children . Then I discovered the beauty of the language, and began my colorful dream in the English world.Everyday, I read English following the tapes. Sometimes, I watch English cartoons. On the weekend, I often go to the English corner. By talking with different people there, I have made more and more friends as well as improved my oral English.I hope I can travel around the world someday. I want to go to America to visit Washington Monument, because the president Washington is my idol. Of course, I want to go to London too, because England is where English language developed. If I can ride my bike in Cambridge university, I will be very happy.I hope I can speak English with everyone in the world. I/'ll introduce China to them, such as the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and Anshan.I know, Rome was not built in a day. I believe that after continuous hard study, one day I can speak English very well.If you want to be loved, you should learn to love and be lovable. So I believe as I love English everyday , it will love me too. 5First, I would like to know, what does your destiny offer you? Happiness, wisdom, a strong body or something else. If I had asked this question to president Nixon, he would probably had said,”Our destiny offers not the cup of despair, but the chalice of opportunity.”Needless to say, one of the biggest opportunities given to China is the 2008 Olympic Games. Till now, we have used two sevenths of the preparation time. How much changes have you seen? New roads, new subway lines, public-exercising equipments with beautiful colors, large blocks of grass fields, and also lots of modern gyms which are under construction.Other than those, there are even more good effects brought to us by the Olympic Games that cannot be seen directly. For example, more and more people will get to know China. I’m sure the mysterious Chinese culture will attract them strongly. And the games will also do good to the economy and environment, for it is gaining the attention of foreign investors and the awareness of environmental protection is being strengthened. What is more, Olympic Games give a unique opportunity to inspire and educate a new generation of Chinese youth with the Olympic values and the Olympic spirit. Now that we have seen so many advances, could you even imagine us losing the holding rights?I’ve already said a lot about the Olympics and China. But I think everyone should use some time to think of this question, ”Does the Olympic Games hav e any special meaning to you?”For us, I mean the Chinese youth, 2008 Olympic Games is a tremendous gift. Because what we are waiting for is to do something significant as repaying the love given to us .Thesociety is just like a ship, and in our dreams the captain is waving his hand and saying ”Hey! Come here and take the helm! ”How charming his voice is, but we have never heard of it in our true life. This morning, however, when we wake up, we will see the Olympic Games waving its hand. After chewing, most of us will have at least one plan about what to do for the Olympic Games. And mine is to be a “comforter” ----that is someone who will give comfort to others. At the end of my speech, I hope all the preparation will go well, and everyone will show their ability to the world. Let us seize opportunities and give a big smile to challenges.。

我的希腊神话也帮了忙:学习ocean这个单词的时候,我想到了Okeanos(希腊神话中的一个海神);而Helios(阿波罗手下的日神)也在英文中构成了关乎太阳的很多单词。
The Merry Wives of Windsor(《温莎的风流娘儿们》)那种欢乐的气氛。
