When will Charlotte Stone perform her songs?A. -.B. -.C. -.D. -.BSports are the base of my life, next to my mother who raised me when my dad left us. I havebeen into sports since I was six years old. I have known many coaches and heard hundreds of their tips, but they usually focused on drills to develop my skills and reach the next level of play. When I was in Senior Two, I met the new school basketball coach, Brian Pawloski. I thought I was certain to be selected for the school team since I had been in it the year before. I showed up to the tryouts and put out about 90% effort since I thought I’d make it with no proble m. That was a big mistake.Brian Pawloski is the hardest-working coach I have ever met. He didn’t expect 100% effort, he expected 200% effort. One example: he once made us do 40 suicide drills for the 40 lay-ups (投篮) we missed in a game. Some think this is crazy, but it isn’t. After this conditioning practice, as we were getting a cup of cold water to drink, I said, “Coach, that was the best practice I ever had.” I was completely sincere. This man was and is the person who influenced me most at my high school. He expects us to be excellent not just on the court but in the classroom. If I am not working on basketball, I am reading a book that he thinks will help us better understand life’s challenges, including Wooden, Coach, and The Screwtape Letters. In the first two years I slacked off, not putting forth my full potential. Now, unlike the coaches of my youth, this man was interested in how he did off the court. He always made sure I kept up with my studies and was able to be trusted. I can honestly say that no other coach has given me so much advice on how to succeed in basketball, but more importantly, in life. My school is lucky to have such a great person to teach, coach and influence their students. I will always remember my high-school basketball days as one of the hardest times I have ever worked in my life not only in basketball but in my growth as an individual.25. Different from other coaches, Coach Brian ________.A. concentrated on skill trainingB. trained the team to the edge of deathC. expecte d the team to do well in their studiesD. asked the team to do more reading than training26. The underlined phrase “slacked off” in the last paragraph probably means ________.A. paid no attentionB. made less effortC. had less passionD. showed no interest27. In the author’s eye, Coach Brian is ________.A. professional and seriousB. hard-working and honestC. skilled and cruel and helpfulCIn the depths of the French Guianese rainforest, there still remain unusual groups of indigenous(土著的) people. Surprisingly, these people live largely by their own laws and their own social customs. And yet, people in this area are in fact French citizens because it has been a colony(殖民地) of the French Republic since 1946. In theory, they should live by the French law is often ignored or unknown, thus making them into an interesting area of “lawlessness” in the world. The lives of these people have finally been recorded thanks to the effects of a Frenchman form Paris called Gin. Gin spent five months in early 2015 exploring the most remote corners of this area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with half its population of only 250,000 living in its capital, Cayenne.“I have a special love for the French Guianese people. I have worked there on and off for almost ten years,” says Gin. “I’ve been able to keep firm friendships with them. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to their living envi ronment. I don’t see it as a lawless land. But rather I see it as an area of freedom.”“I wanted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life,” continues Gin. “I prefer to work in black and white, which allows me to show di fferent specific worlds more clearly.”His black-and-white pictures present a world almost lost in time. These pictures show people seemingly pushed into a world that they were unprepared for. These local citizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the modernFrench Republic, which brings with it not only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal and even suicide.28. Why does the author feel surprised about the indigenous people in French Guiana?A. They seldom follow the French law.B. They often ignore the Guianese law.C. They are separated from the modern world.D. They are both Guianese and French citizens.29. The modern French lifestyle.B. The self-supporting hunting.C. The uncivilized hunting.D. They’re a wealthy couple -- their assets, according to Chinese media, include nine flats, a BMW car and various luxury goods. When I volunteered that I was learning to play, their tone was cheerfully joking,“Good luck with that!”If this game is so good, why are adults ignoring it? Seeing someone playing smart phone games, I preferred to say,“Why are you having your kids do chess while you play?"Sure, we parents had work to do, work that helped pay for the lessons our kids were enjoying. But I was also wondering if we were sending an unnoticeable message that learning was for the young During one tournament,I saw a group of parents playing chess! Just then, agroup of kids passed me“Why are adults learning chess?" One asked, in an apparently joking tone.I was tired of sitting on the sidelines. I wanted in, and that is why I got a membership card and started throwing myself in.“Early on,I was nervous, even the master can sometimes play badly, ”as one Grandmaster put it“a fan never".And a fan I was. It was three hours of concentration and thinking with my phone off.It felt like a gym where I was trained to solve problems with focus, memory, logic, and occasional headaches. And of course hours of absence of digital devices would never be no good for thinking sharply.Being a beginner can be hard at any age, but it gets harder when you are older. He tripped upon it and fell forward. The child sat down on the step and the two had another interview. During it the dog greatly exerted himself to please the child. He performed a few playful jumps with such abandon that the child suddenly saw him to be a valuable thing. He made a swift, greedy charge and seized the rope.He dragged his captive(俘虏)into a hall and up many long stairways in a dark building. The dog made willing efforts, but he could not walk very skillfully up the stairs because he was very small and soft.and at last the pace of the child grew so energetic that the dog became panic-stricken. In his mind he was being dragged toward somewhere unknown. His eyes grew wild with the terror of it. He began to wiggle his head wildly and to brace his legsThe child redoubled his efforts. They had a battle on the stairs. The child was victorious because he was completely absorbed in his purpose, and because the dog was very small. It certainly seems so based on the recent experiments conducted by researchers in Japan, who developed a wearable soft robot for patients to use during treatments, such as injections(注射) and other unpleasant therapies in an attempt to ease their pain and defend people against anxiety. On being subjected to a moderate heat stimulus(刺激), the study participants who wore the robot experienced less pain than in the tests in which they did not wear the robot.During the campaign to encourage vaccination against COVID-19, public health officials recognized that some people are simply afraid of needles, which contributed to reduced vaccination rates. While the problems of patient anxiety and pain during medical procedures have been well studied there remains a need to test and implement solutions to help patients. The soft fur-covered robot the scientists called Reliebo was designed to be attached to the participant's hand. The researchers tested its effectiveness under various conditions based on the clenching of the participant’s hand, while applying the painful thermal stimulus to the other arm that was not being used to hold the robot. The researchers found that holding the robot helped relieve the experience for patients regardless of the experimental conditions used, and concluded that the feelings of well -being that can be created by human touch may have also been activated by the robot. “It is well known that interpersonal touch can reduce pain and fear, and we believe that this effect can be achieved even with nonliving soft robots,”states Professor Tanaka. This may be useful when actual human contact is not feasible, such as during pandemics. Future versions of the robot might use a controlled gaze or even AR (augmented reality) technologies to help build a connection with the patient or distract them from pain perception in various situations.32. What is the purpose of the robot?A. T6 assist doctors in injecting accurately.B. To help relieve people's pain from injections.C. To evaluate patients’ physical and mental health.D. To visit the Embroidery Taster Workshop, you have to ________.A. get an entrance ticketB. show y our greeting cardC. know about embroideryD. join an associationBYour house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of diet plan.Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(难为情)when they’re in poorly lit places-and so more likely to eat lots of food . If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint, go blue.Don’t forg et the clock-or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70fewer calories(卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes, And while you’re at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.24. The text is especially helpful for those who care about_______.A. their home comfortsB. their body shapeC. house buyingD. healthy diets25. A home environment in blue can help people_________.A. digest food betterB. reduce food intakeC. burn more caloriesD. regain their appetites26. What are people advised to do at mealtimes?A. Eat quickly.B. Play fast music.C. Use smaller spoons.D. Turn down the lights.27. What can be a suitable title for the test?A. Is Your House Making You Fat?B. Ways of Serving DinnerC. Effects of Self-ConsciousnessD. Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?CPeople who are obese(肥胖)have a worse memory than their thinner friends, a small study shows.Tests on 50 people showed that being overweight was linked to worse “episodic memory” or the ability to remember past experiences. The study in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology argues that a less vivid memory of recent meals may lead to overeating. However, other aspects of memory —such as general knowledge — show no signs.Tests on rats have previously shown that with burgeoning waistlines come poorer performances in memory tests, but the evidence in humans has been mixed.Fifty people with a Body Mass Index (BMI) ranging from 18 (healthy) to 51 (very obese) took part in a memory test — a bit like doing a treasure hunt on your own. They had to “hide” objects at different times and on different scenes displayed on a computer screen. They were later asked to recall what they had hidden, when and where. The results showed obese peopl e’s scores were 15% lower than thinner people.Dr. Lucy Cheke, from the University of Cambridge, told the BBC News website, “The suggestion we’re making is that a higher BMI is having some reduction on the vividness of memory, but they’re not drawing blank s and having amnesia(失忆症). As a matter of fact, if they have a less strong memory of a recent meal, with a less strong impact in the mind, then they may have less ability to regulate how much they eat later on.”Hunger hormones(激素) play a huge role in how much we eat, but it has already been recognized that our minds have a key role too.Dr. Cheke concluded, “It is too early to talk in terms of advice, but we are certainly beginning to observe how obesity causes itself to continue.”28. What does the under lined word “burgeoning” in Paragraph 4 refer to?A. changing.B. declining.C. swinging.D. increasing.29. Which of the following is TRUE about the experiment?A. The researchers compare the performances of people with various BMIs.B. Fifty subjects are required to seek for objects hidden by the researchers.C. All aspects of memory will be influenced by obesity.D. The number of rats tested is the same as that of people.30. Dr. Lucy Cheke’s words indicate that _______.A. i t’s high time that they provided suggestions on dealing with obesityB. i t’s our minds rather than hunger hormones that play an important roleC. having a higher BMI has a negative influence on memory to some extentD. if suffering from weak memory, people cannot regulate behaviors31. Where does this text probably come from?A. An entertainment magazine.B. A science report.C. An advertisement.D. Science fiction.DFor thousands of years, people thought of glass as something beautiful to look at. Only recently have they come to think of it as something to look through. Stores display their goods in large glass windows. Glass bottles and jars that hold food and drink allow us to see the contents. Glass is used to make eyeglasses, microscopes, telescopes, and many other extremely useful and necessary objects.Until the Second World War, most of the glass used for optical instruments was imported from Europe. However, during the war Americans could not get European glass, and they were forced to make their own. As a result, new kinds of glasses were developed that had been previously unknown. These new effects were achieved by mixing other chemical elements with the sand. Some of these new glasses are very strong and can resist many kinds of shocks. Legend has it that a very hard glass was invented by a Roman who showed his discovery to the Emperor. When the Emperor saw the glass he feared that it would become more valuable than gold and silver, making his treasure worthless. Therefore, he had the glassmaker killed, and the secret was not discovered again for hundreds of years. In the present century, safety glass was invented for use in modern cars and planes. Safety glass is made by placing a layer of plastic between two layers of plate glass. When the outside layer of glass is broken, the pieces do not scatter(散开) and injure people. Some glass of the type is strong enough to resist bullets.Although in recent years plastics have replaced glass under conditions where glass might be easily broken, there are new uses being developed, for the greatest advantage of glass is that its component parts are inexpensive and can be found all over the world.32. With the passage of time, glass _________.A. is regarded as transparentB. is no longer seen as decorationC. is used to make things look pleasantD. is widely used to replace steel in making containers33. Why did Americans make their own glass during the Second World War?A. The war blocked the way of glass import.B. They refused to use the European glass.C. The glass made in Europe was out of date.D. They were able to make a new kind of glass.34. By telling the legend, the author wants to _________.A. prove that the Roman was the first inventor of hard glassB. support that the Americans were as clever as the RomansC. give some interesting information about hard glassD. provide a historical event concerned with hard glass35. New uses of glass are being developed on the ground that _________.A. glass is not as safe as plasticsB. glass is not as strong and durable as plasticsC. glass is easily obtainable and inexpensiveD. glass is more and more widely used第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

ATo minimize the risk of spreading the virus, we should travel in uncrowded areas if allowed. Here are some vacations you can plan this spring.Visit a local farmVisiting a farm is “number one” travel pick right now, which can be a wonderful family activity, educational and entertaining for children and adults alike. Price plays a big role in that suggestion. A farm is a family business and a home. Respecting the farmers’ work load and their privacy is important.Visit a geological parkThe total number of national geological parks in China has increased to more than 200, so odds are you’ve got one in driving range. If you’re up for a challenge, you can climb Mount Danxia With a deep red color, bright like sunset glow, There are over six hundred stone hills, walls, pillars, and stone bridges in Danxia Scenic Area. An annual pass, which guarantees entry to every spot, is just $ 30 for one adult.Plan a camping tripIt doesn't cost much more than camping. Most provinces have dozens of drive - in camp sites, while you can also find cabins in the S 40 - $ 90 per night range. There’s no shortage of activities, either - whether it’s fishing, hiking, biking or just perfecting your camping recipe.Rent an RV(露营车; 房车)RVs are a prime option for a cheap vacation. Using an RV for a vacation means you’re paying for your transportation and lodging all in one. Also, considering that some two - person RVscan go for as little as S 80 - $ 150 per night, you can easily find yourself traveling around the country without breaking the bank.21. Which vacation would a hiker most probably choose?A. Visit a local farmB. Visit a geological parkC. Plan a camping tripD. Reni an RV22. What do the vacations have in common?A. User — friendly.B. Environment — friendly.C. Family — friendly.D. Wallet — friendly.23. What’s the unique advantage of renting RVs?A. It makes your vacation adventurous.B. It offers free trips around the world.C. You can kill two birds with one stone.D. You may have someone to keep you company.BTo walk is to be human. We' re the only creature that gets around by standing up and putting one foot in front of the other. In the more than 4 million years that humanity' s ancestors have been u-sing only two legs for walking, our ability to walk upright has allowed humankind to travel great distances and survive changing climates, environments and landscapes. But walking is more than just transportation. It also happens to be really good for us. Countless scientific studies have found that this simple act can provide a number of health benefits and help people live longer. In fact, a walking routine-if done properly—might be the only exercise people need. How much walking should one aim for? You’ve likely heard we need 10,000 steps a day. That’s about 5 miles. But contrary to popular belief, this recommendation doesn’t come from science. Instead, it stems from a 1960s advertising campaign to promote a pedometer(计步器)in Japan. Perhaps because it's a round number and easy to remember, it stuck.Since the 1960s, researchers have studied the 10,000 - steps - a - day standard and have turned up mixed resu lts. Although 10,000 steps is certainly a healthy and worthwhile goal, it’s not a one - size - fits - all recommendation. For instance, a recent Harvard University study involving more than 16,000 senior women found that those who got at least 4,400 steps a day greatly reduced their risk of dying early when compared with less active women. The study also noted that these benefits continued up to 7, 500 steps before leveling off. This 7,500 mark isn't surprising: It’s in line with common public health recomm endations, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation of 150 minutes of moderate (适度的) physical activity a week for adults.Research has shown that picking up the pace might be a good idea, too-fast enough to raise your heart rate, even if just for a short burst.24. Which statement will the author believe?A. Walking 10000 steps a day fits us all who lack exercise.B. Walking is the only exercise that unhealthy people need.C. To be healthy, walking great distances is strongly suggestedD. The benefits of walking depend on frequency, intensity and duration25. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 probably mean?A. A walking routineB. A round numberC. The popular beliefD. The pedometer Ads.26. How much walking should one aim for according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention?A. 4,400 steps a day.B. 7,500 steps a day.C. 10,000 steps a day.D. 150 minutes a day.27. What is the best tide of the passage?A. The Only Exercise You Need—WalkingB. 10,000 - Step Goal Is More Marketing Than ScienceC. Walking Is One Of The Best Exercises For HealthD. Walk Often, Walk Fast And Walk LongCThe first thing we notice about new people are their faces. The next time we see these people, we remember them because we remember their faces. This seems like a simple process. However, scientists found that it is not such a simple process. The section of the brain that is responsible for face recognition seems to work differently for different people. Some people have great difficulty remembering and recognizing faces, while others almost never forget a face.Normal babies are born with a natural ability to recognize faces. In fact, their face recognition abilities are much better than their parents. Babies are highly skilled at face recognition at six months. But by nine months, they lose this skill. By nine months, a baby's face - recognition skills are about the same as an adult' s.Unfortunately, some people are not born with this ability to recognize faces. The part of the brain that is responsible for face recognition doesn’t work for them. This condition is called face blindness. People with very severe face blindness cannot even recognize their own faces. In fact, people with this, condition can sometimes be frightened when they look in the minor. They don't recognize their own face, so for a second they are startled when see this unfamiliar face.Face blindness is not always severe. Scientists believe up to 10 percent of the population may be affected by face blindness to some degree, yet many people with mild face blindness might not even know they have it. They have no reason to know they are different from anyone else until someone points it out. This is similar to people with color blindness.Colorblind people can’t see the difference between certain colors such as red and green, until someone tells them that green and red arc two different colors. There is no cure of face blindness. So for the time being, people with face blindness need to find simple techniques to compensate for their problem. They can try to recognize people bytheir hairstyle, their voice, or their glasses. Hopefully, in the future as scientists learn more about this condition, they will find a cure.28. What’s the first par agraph mainly about?A. The way to improve one’s face - recognition skills.B. The fact that some people have face - recognition problems.C. The simple process of the brain to recognize others’ faces.D. The importance of face recognition in human communication.29. When do people have the keen skills of face - recognition?A. At birth.B. In adolescence.C. Half a year old.D. Nine months old.31. What does the author think of the problem of face blindness?A. People need to take it seriously.B. It affects a great number of people.C. It can be cured in the near future.D. Certain techniques can make up for it.DMs. Blake wanted to leave the San Francisco Bay Area. Her parents had bought a house on a large plot of land near a gateway to Yosemite National Park. Benjamin could stay with them while she worked at a supermarket in town. He could run around in the hills. What she hadn’t quite accounted for, though, is how the hills are becoming hotter, drier and more dangerous.A year after they moved came the first of an annual series of wildfires, and an asthma diagnosis (哮喘诊断) for Benjamin. One year, they had to leave from their home for a few days. Another year, they bought air - conditioners so they could keep the windows shut when the air got thick and smoky. This year, just as it seemed like Benjamin’s asthma was relieving, came the Creek Fire in the hills nearby. The air turned white with smoke. The boy had what appeared to be a mild asthma attack.Ms. Blake struggles to explain to him why he can' t be outside exploring. She worries when he goes to school. She wonders how much longer the family will be able to insure their home if rates climb higher - and what they’ll do if insurance becomes unavailable at any price. “It seems every year there’s some major fire,” Ms. Blake said. “We're smoked out. It's hard to breathe. It's always a worry that you' re going to have to flee or you1 re going to lose your home.” She said she had spent in the neighborhood of $1,000 this year to equip her home. “To prot ect my son of course I’m going to do that,” she said. “But it' s fundamentally unfair.”32. What can be learned from Paragraph 1-2?A. Benjamin likes living in San Francisco Bay AreaB. Benjamin didn’t have an asthma before moving.C. Ms. Blake stayed with her son while working.D. Ms. Blake could explain how the hills are becoming drier.33. Why did Ms. Blake buy air - conditioners?A. To help cure Benjamin’s asthma.B. To keep the air cool in hot summer.C. To keep the air drier in the house.D. To keep the windows shut when necessary.34. What is the direct factor to Benjamin’s asthma?A. Some dry brush and dead trees caused fire.B. Series of wildfires attacked his living area.C. The weather became hotter and drier.D. The air got thick and smoky in the San Francisco Bay Area.35. How did Ms. Blake feel about the series of wildfires?A. Anxious and angry.B. Concerned and confused.C. Unconcerned and uninterested.D. AAfter slamming his fists into the wall until his knuckles (指关节)dripped with blood, the raging teenage boy turned to a staff member and push him with a quick and violent movement. The teen had recently been admitted to Youth Development Institute, a residential program for children with emotional and behavioral disorders in Phoenix, Arizona. Even the smallest incidents triggered his anger.Years ago, the response would have been swift and physical: The boy would have been forced to the ground and restrained(监禁) until he grew calm, which sometimes could take up to 45 minutes. But this time, Sean Hennessey, a direct-care staff coordinator, stepped in front of another staffmember, sending him out of the room before the conflict could become serious. Hennessey stood at the door with his head down, avoiding eye contact, and calmly spoke to the boy. When tears rolled down the boy’s face minutes later, Hennessey moved in and offered an encouraging side hug.“It’s exhilarating when you’ve avoided a restraint,” Hennessey told ProPublica, recalling the incident. “Pinning a kid to the ground until they stop fighting and start crying, it’s inhuman if you think about it.”Trish and David Cocoros, the directors of the program, said they hated relying on restraints, but assumed that if they stopped using them, more staff members and kids would get hurt.1.Which isn’t supposed to do at the beginning while calming an angry boy?A. To send him out of the roomB. To speak to the boyC. To start eye contactD. To give a hug2.What does the underlined word "exhilarating" mean in the last paragraph?A. astonished and relieved;B. happy and excitedC. sad and desperateD. tired and disappointed3.According to the article, we can learn that________.A. None was ever get hurt in the residential programB. The residential program had a history of physical mistreatmentC. Hennessey considered restraints to be a must in dealing with angry boysD. All raging teenagers in the residential program have to be restrained for 45 minutes.BPOETRY BY HEART By Andrew Motion (Viking £16.99)For three years, a terrific national competition has encouraged pupils aged 14 to 18 to learn and recite poetry — and this fat collection is the pool of 200 poems from which they have to make their choice. This anthology makes a fine present for anyone interested in poetry, ranging from the earliest English poem through every century to current poetry with many themes and from different ethnic backgrounds. Some of the choices seem odd to me —but that’s part of the fun, as you wonder why. The notes make the book really useful. Every home should have a copy. POEMS THAT MAKE GROWN MEN CRY Edited by Anthony and Ben Holden (Simon & Schuster £16.99)This is a fascinating, wide-ranging selection of poems chosen by 100 well-known men — simply because they find them deeply moving. But grown men aren’t supposed to cry, are they? Some of the poems are about loss, as you’d expect, but others are about deeply held political passions or intense observations of nature. Each is introduced by the chooser, usually with frank personal detail.BLACK COUNTRY by Liz Berry (Chatto £10)This is a writer I’m thrilled to discover —someone who takes a pride in the Midlands, where she lives. Berry uses some of the dialectwords she heard as a child, turning ordinarinessinto something direct, tender and beautiful. The disagreeable Brummie accent becomesmusic in the hands of this fine young poet.LEARNING TO MAKE AN OUD INNAZARETH by Ruth Padel (Chatto £10)Padel is one of our most talented writers. Poet, naturalist, musician and travel writer, she turnsher multi-layered poetic attention to the MiddleEast, seeking peace and harmony throughsensitive and moving poems that offer hope evenas they reflect upon struggle. Her prolific and passionate creativity is proof that‘making is our defence against the dark’.4. Of the four books mentioned above, who are the creators of the poems?A. Andrew Motion and Liz BerryB. Liz Berry and Ruth PadelC. Anthony and Ben HoldenD. Ruth Padel and Ben Holden5. Which of the following statements is true?A. Students aged 14 to 18 can choose a poem from Black Country to take part in a competition.B. Liz Berry can change the unpleasant Brummie accent into a beautiful song.C. Men will cry after they read the poems written by 100 distinguished persons.D. You will read personal perspectives in Poems That Make Grown Men Cry.6. My cousin is obsessed with poetry of different kinds, so my first choice as a gift for him would be ______.A. Learning to Make an Oud in NazarethB. Black CountryC. Poetry by HeartD. Poems that Make Grown Men Cry7. Which of the four books may probably give the people living in psychological suffering comfort and relief?A. Poems that Make Grown Men CryB. Poetry by HeartC. Black CountryD. Learning to Make an Oud in NazarethCAsk most American children what they want to be when they grow up, and they probably will say “doctor” or “lawyer.”Though our culture, our economy, indeed our very security are heavily dependent on science and engineering, only 12 percent of American high school students graduate with the prerequisites (必要条件) for a career in science or engineering. Worse yet, only 6 percent of minority children are said to be so prepared.Don’t be too surprised. If you ask further why the majority of the high school students would choose a career in medicine or law, the answers will be straight out of some popular TV shows.“Doctors help people. They save lives.” “Lawyers beat the bad guys.” Most students would say. Now, how about science or engineering as a career choice? The answers will be just as predictable: “Get real! Who wants to be a geek? They all are nerds(书呆子). Besides, I hate math.”In our media, scientists and engineers typically are portrayed as introverted(内向的) and humorless. They always wear white lab coats, with a collection of pencils in their pocket protectors. They wear glasses with black plastic frames. If more students are to choose technical careers, they must have a better view presented to them. They need to be told, for instance, that the invention of lifesaving equipment saves lives just as surely as the application of it in the hospital. It also might help if someone emphasized to students that the lawyer who saved the defendant (被告) by introducing the DNA evidence would have seen him hanged had it not been for the scientists who discovered DNA.Whatever we do, until students stop thinking of the term “engineer” as a synonym (同义词) for “geek,” it is impossible to expect our children to change their views towards scientists and engineers.8. That attitude comes with a fear that, should they try, they would somehow get it wrong. They will say the wrong thing or behave in a way that will cause the mass rolling of eyes. But here's the first secret of social media: everybody feels this way. I recently found myself at a dinner with a young actress who said that her work demands that she join Twitter, but she feelslike she doesn't have anything to say. I am also surrounded by people of my age who use Facebook only when they need to answer a message. They tell themselves that age is the barrier (障碍), rather than personal taste. Here's the second secret of social media: everybody uses it for more or less the same reasons. Older generations often use social media to stay in touch with children and grandchildren. And it is exactly why young people use it. The truth is that most people use social media to see how those they care about are doing without needing to ring them up on the phone every night. And this is the last secret of social media: everyone uses it their own way. Newcomers —younger and older —who worry about “getting it right” are thinking there's a right way to get it. It turns out, there isn't. Personally, I talk a lot on Twitter but little on Facebook. Plenty of people use both. And some people post nothing but just read others' posts. Social media companies would rather see people filling their networks up with pictures and posts, but there's no rule against being a fly on the wall. We're quick to forget that the web wasn't invented by 13-year-olds. It was created by seniors. So don't let all this talk about age differences put you off.12. In the author's eyes, what prevents seniors from using social media?A. Their age.B. Personal taste.C. Their purpose.D. Others' influence.13. According to the author, one common reason why everybody uses social media is to _____.A. save money on phone billsB. voice their personal opinionsC. be informed of the latest newsD. keep in touch with their loved ones14. B y mentioning “a fly on the wall”, the author means _____.A. one should try different social networksB. users of social media must learn to make postsC. one can be consumers of social media as readers onlyD. social media companies should make rules for users15. Which of the following shows the structure of the text?CP: Central Point P: Point Sp: Sub-point (次要点) C: Conclusion第二节(共5小题;毎小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

梅州市高考英语听说模拟考试试题2Part A Reading AloudIn this part, you are required to watch a video clip and read after the speaker in the video. It was the earliest evidence of the thinking brain. Still, we don’t know much about the evolution of human intelligence. During the second half of the 19th century, the ideas of Charles Darwin began to influence our thinking. Francis Galton was the first scientist to suggest that intelligence was a biologically-based mental ability. He was Darwin’s cousin, who was much inspired by reading his book, On the Origin of Species. Galton thought that people were born with human mental abilities. It was just in the same way as the plant and animal characteristics outlined by Darwin. And he set out to prove it.Part B Role PlayIn this part, you are required to act as a role and complete three communicative tasks: listen to a speaker, ask the speaker three questions and then answer five questions.情景介绍角色:你是Mike。

I’ve had a good tim e and that would probably have had something to do with you, so thanks.‖In some ways, the relaxed attitude was shocking, says Melville. But it was a sign of how students’ understanding of their role has changed. ―They have a more independent view of the u niversity, and they feel free to comment,‖ said Melville.A committee, led by Melville, was set up earlier this year to explore the change in students’ attitudes towards teachers.―This is something being driven by young people,‖ said Melville. ―They l ive surrounded by different kinds of electronic resources. They use social networking tools and things like Wikipedia. The first group of these students is now at university.‖Students do not regard teaching staff in the same way as previous students did. ―Because Web 2.0, Google, Wikipedia are all about being able to change things yourself, students expect to be able to do this as well,‖ said Melville. There have been other changes in the student-teacher relationship. If students choose to study throug h a social networking group, they are in control. They don’t always make staff welcome, and they are free to decide which staff members they allow in.―Almost everybody who gets into using these kinds of technologies, it appears, becomes much shallower in their research,‖ said Melville.4.Who is Dave most probably in the first paragraph?A.a high school student B.a university studentC. a teacherD. an online pen friend5.We can find the following changes in the student-teacher relationship EXCEPT _____.A. it becomes much more relaxed than beforeB. students are more at ease to commentC. students have the say in choosing teachers to welcome into their social groupD. teachers are no longer regarded as knowledgeable and necessary6.What is the change in attitudes rooted in according to Melville?A.The first group of students at university.B.The electronic resources.C.The society.D.Wikipedia.7.What may be the disadvantages of using the technologies?A.Students have more information resources besides from teachers.B.Technologies keep them from doing deep research.C.Teachers cannot control or influence their students at all.D.Students spend too much time on online games.CSandra Bullock turned 51 last month. But because she looks exactly the same as she did in Miss Congeniality, a movie filmed back in the 20th century, everyone calls her ―ageless.‖ Bullock is just one of a number of stars in their 40s and 50s who’ve had birthdays recently but have not gotten older, unlike the rest of us in their age group. Halle Berry, for example. One website put a photo of her 20 years ago next to one of the newly 49-year-old Berry and dared us to choose which was which. ―This Is What 49 Looks Like,‖ it said. Seriously, if that’s what 49 looks like, I must be 71.Ho wever, even a generation ago, famous faces evolved. Look at a picture of Grace Kelly at age 52 in the early 1980s. She looks like a beautiful middle-aged woman. Today she’d look old for her age.The goal now is to prevent aging while you are still young, using all the magical nonsurgical options medicine has to offer. Eventually these techniques will become less expensive, and ordinary people of my daughter’s age will have them. Already anti-aging is starting to be considered maintenance, like coloring your hair. My friends and I find ourselves openly debating techniques that we used to make fun of. Does fat-freezing work? How much time do you have to spend in the gym to keep the body of a 35-year-old after 50? It’s all so exhausting. But members of the next generation have it tougher. They’ll have to ask themselves whether they want to spend their youth trying not to get old. I’ve already seen ―Sexy at 70‖ headlines. Will everyone be expected to go to their graves looking hot?I also have to wonder what else we are slowing along with age. How do you move on if you’re working so hard to stay the same? And besides, if you’ve known the ache of watching a daughter pack up for college, you know you can’t stop the clock.8.In the author’s eyes, Sandra Bullock _____.A. doesn’t deserve her fameB. doesn’t look her age at allC. behaves like a young womanD. looks younger than Halle Berry9.The example of Grace Kelly is given to show _____.A. physical beauty never lasts longB. there is no such thing as agelessnessC. people’s attitude towards aging has changedD. stars pay too much attention to their appearance10.Where do the author’s concerns about anti-aging techniques lie?A. They expose people to danger.B. They make people feel stressed.C. They are too expensive for ordinary people.D. They encourage comparisons among people.11.What’s the purpose of the text?A. To show the burden of youth.B. To offer tips on how to look hot.C. To advise people to accept aging.D. To comment on some famous stars.DIT’S always exciting to think about the future and what kind of technology might exist in years to come. But what if that future is closer than you think? The name Magic Leap is starting to spread across the Internet, and for a good reason. The Magic Leap technology company in the US has been working on something new and exciting, keeping it so secret that even the people working on the project have been hidden from the media. But recently they have started to release more information, and it seems like the future of computing is about to change dramatically.Magic Leap’s preview shows the possibility of a classroom where you can interact with a miniature 3-D man and watch animals floating in front of your eyes. You could come face to face with fierce creatures like tigers and sharks, and more might be possible very soon. The company hopes to create new technology that mixes reality and virtual reality computing. This means that the way we interact with computers could change completely, and so could the gaming industry.Imagine a game in which you can not only look after a dragon on a screen, but also see it walking around your home, feed it and play with it. This is a world where movies will make you jump as things come, flying at you. Rio Caraeff, t he company’s chief content officer, said that instead of staring at a phone screen, ―the world becomes your screen‖.All of this could be the next step for Magic Leap, and their newly-released video suggests so. The video shows a small elephant floating in the hands of its user, a virtual reality pet that the user can interact with. Exciting to think about, no?It seems that the excitement has inspired other companies who are lining up to join in on this new project. The technology, called Cinematic Reality, is attracting the attention of large companies like Google, who are already investing large sums of money in the project hoping to see it become a reality.12.Which of the following is TRUE about the Magic Leap technology company?A.
