1. Writing 2. Listening Comprehension 3. 4. Reading Comprehension 5. TranslationPart I Writing1.For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled Should Class Attendance Be Required. You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words according to the outline given below in Chinese. Write your essay on Answer Sheet 1.1.

Should Class Attendance Be Required Required class attendance is so common at colleges and universities that many teachers and even students themselves simply assume it is a good thing. In fact, required class attendance does more harm than good. There are several reasons that teachers should not require attendance. First, rigid attendance policies do not benefit students’studies. For example, a student may have to give up a lecture which he finds important to his studies simply because of rigid attendance polices which is a contributing factor to his course performance. Second, the lectures of some teachers are not always constructive. A student should be allowed to decide for himself whether an in-class experience is worthwhile when his teacher merely repeats material from the textbook or wastes class time by telling irrelevant stories. Finally and most importantly, there is no proven correlation between attendance and performance in a course. A student may never miss a single attendance in a course, but it doesn’t mean that he has acquired the knowledge of this course. Required class attendance may secure one hundred percent attendance for a course, but it does not make much sense.Part II Listening ComprehensionSection A听力原文:M: I’m looking for an unfurnished two-bedroom apartment, but all your apartments are furnished.W: We can take care of that. I would also appreciate a certificate to try this establishment again as I hardly want to spend my hard-earned dollars here and risk another experience like this one.B. We gave her our drink orders and she did bring those promptly and took our order. Thirty minutes later, our food arrived, but it was cold and looked like it had been sitting out for a while. My husband motioned for Mandy to come over to our table and informed her that our food was cold. Her response was to say that it was not cold when she brought it to the table.C. I have been a loyal customer of Eat Here Restaurants since 1996 and have always been pleased with the food and service. Last Wednesday, February 18th, at around 5 p.m., we visited the Eat Here location on West Main Street in Small Town. There was one other table in Mandy’s section and they were almost done eating. After being seated, we sat for about fifteen minutes before Mandy came to take our drink orders. When we told her how long we’d been waiting, she didn’t apologize but just said, “What can I get ya?”E. At this point, we asked to speak to a manager. We explained the issues we’d had already and the manager did apologize and offered to replace our food, but at this point we just wanted to leave. As we were leaving, we overheard Mandy telling a co-worker very loudly that we just wanted free drinks and were cheap and probably hadn’t even left her a tip. How To Reada Newspaper如何阅读报刊

How to Read a NewspaperBy Walter CronkiteInternational Paper asked Walter Cronkite, for years television’s foremost news anchorman, and an ardent advocate of the need for a free people to remain free by keeping fully informed, to tell you how your newspaper can help you cope better with your world each day.If you’re like most people you try to keep up with the news by watching it on television. That’s how 65% of us get 100% of our news – from the24-odd-minute TV news broadcast each evening. The problem – and I know the frustration of it firsthand – is that unless something really special happens, we in TV news have to put severe time limitations on every story, even the most complicated and important ones.Get more than headlinesSo what we bring you is primarily a front-page headline service. To get all you need to know, you have to flesh out those headlines with a complete account of the news from a well edited and thorough newspaper. Is it really necessary to getthe whole story? DorothyGreene Friendly put it this way:“What the American peopledon’t know can kill them.”Amen.News people have aresponsibility. And so do you.Ours is to report the news fairly, accurately and completely.Yours is to keep yourselfinformed everyday.I’l l never forget thequotation hanging in Edward R.Murrow’s CBS office. It wasfrom Thoreau: “It takes two tospeak the truth – one to speakand one to hear.”Take a three-minute overviewHere’s how I tackle thepaper. For starters, I take athree-minute overview of thenews. No need to go to thesports section first, or the TVlistings. With my overviewyou’ll get there quickly enough.First I scan through the front-page headlines, look at thepictures and read the captions. Ido the same thing page by pagefront to back. Only then do I goback for the whole feast. The way the front page is“made up” tells you plenty. Forone thing, headline type sizewill tell you how the paper’seditor ranks the stories onrelative importance. A majorcrop failure in Russia should getlarger type than an overturnedtruck of wheat on the Interstate, for example.Which is the main story? You’ll find the main or leadstory in the farthest upper-righthand column. Why? Tradition.Newspapers used to appear onnewsstands folded anddisplayed with their top right-hand quarter showing. Theymade up the front page with thelead story there to entice readers. You’ll find the second mostimportant story at the top far left, unless it’s related to the leadstory. Do you have to read allthe stories in the paper? Gosh,no. But you check them all.Maybe the one that appears atfirst to be the least appealingwill be the one that will mosteffect your life.News is information, periodA good newspaper providefour basic ingredients to helpyou wrap your mind around thenews: information, background, analysis and interpretation.Rule #1 of Americanjournalism is: “News columnsare reserved only for news.”What is news? It is informationonly. You can tell a goodnewspaper story. It just reportsthe news. It doesn’t try to slantit. And it gives you both sidesof the story.Look out for a lot ofadjectives and adverbs. Theydon’t belong in an objectivenews story. They tend to colorand slant it so you may come toa wrong conclusion.Do look for bylines, datelines and the news servicesources of articles. These willalso help you judge a story’simportance and its facts. As you read a story you canweigh its truthfulness by askingyourself, “Who said so?” Lookout for “facts” that come fromunnamed sources, such as “a highly placed government official.” This could top you off that the story is not quite true, or that someone – usually in Washington – is sending up a “trial balloon” to see if something that may happen or be proposed gets a good reception.Another tip: check for “Corrections” items. A good newspaper will straighten out false or wrong information as soon as it discovers its error. A less conscientious one will let it slide or bury it.An Upside Down PyramidReporters write news stories in a special way called the “invertedpyramid” style. That means theystart with the end,the climax of thestory, with themost importantfacts first, thenbuilding moredetails in order of importance. Thisis unlike thetelling or writingof most stories, where you usuallystart at the beginning and save the climax for last. Knowing about the newspaper’s “inverted pyramid” style will help you sift facts.A well-reported story will tell you “who”, “what,” “when,” “where,” and “how.” The best newspapers will go on to tell you “why.” “Why” is often missing. And that may be the key ingredient. Many important stories are flanked by “sidebars.” These are supporting stories that offer, not news, but the “why” –background and analysis– tohelp you understand andevaluate it.Background offers helpfulfacts. Analysis frequentlyincludes opinion. So it shouldbe – and usually is – carefullylabeled as such. It’s generallyby-lined by an expert on thesubject who explains the causesof the news and its possibleconsequences to you.No good newspaper will mixinterpretation with the “hard”news, either. Interpretationgoes beyond analysis and tellsyou not just what will probablyhappen, but what ought tohappen. This should be clearlylabeled, or at best, reserved forthe editorial pageor “op-ed”(opposite theeditorial) page.Form your ownopinion firstI form myown opinionbefore I turn tothe editorial pagefor the pundits’views. I don’twant them to tellme how to think until I’vewrestled the issue through to myown conclusion. Once I have,I’m open to other reasoning.Resist the temptation to let themdo your thinking for you. Here’s an idea I firmlybelieve in and act on. Whenyou read something thatmotivates you, do somethingabout it. Learn more about it.Join a cause. Write a letter. You can constantly vote onissues by writing letters, particularly to yourcongressman or state or localrepresentative. To understand the newsbetter, you can also read newsmagazines. Books help to fill inthe holes too. During theVietnam war, for example, many people felt that the dailynews wasn’t entirelysatisfactory. The truth is, youcould have gotten manyimportant new facts from thebooks coming out at the time.Pick a TV story and follow itNow that I’ve taught youthe basics of getting under theskin of a newspaper, letnewspapers get under your skin.Tonight, pick an importantstory that interests you on theTV news. Dig into the story –in your newspaper. Follow it,and continue to follow it closelyin print. See if you don’t findyourself with far moreunderstanding of the event. And see if you don’t have afar more sensible opinion as tothe “whys” and “wherefores” ofthat event, even down to how itwill effect you – and maybeeven what should be doneabout it.Keep up with the news theway my colleagues and I do –on TV and in the newspapers.Learn to sift it for yourself, toheft it, to value it, to question it,to ask for it all. You’ll be inbetter control of your life andyour fortunes. And that’s the way it is.Walter Cronkite。

Well, these are not enough if you are a student at Tsinghua University.According to a new rule of the university, students must prove (证明) themselves in the swimming pool. They need to pass a swimming test of at least 50 meters, and those who fail the test will be required to take a swimming course throughout their school years. A special report on television关于电视的特别报告An emergency screen只是非常时刻的选择Mobile television is unlikely to take off手机电视未必能获得成功Apr 29th 2010 | From The Economist print editionA YOUNG man gazes intently at his mobile device, to which he is listening through earphones. He is so engrossed in his film, his television show, his computer game or whatever he is watching that he does not notice he is blocking the door of the train. Other passengers glare at him. “Do it at home,” counsels the bright yellow poster on the Tokyo metro.

In 2009 some 43% of Japan’s population watched TV on mobile phones, according to Impress R+D, a research firm. It is the only country apart from South Korea where the platform has become commonplace. But mobile television in Japan is not all that mobile. When broadcasts began in 2005, people were expected to use their toys to while away long commutes by train or to kill time while waiting for the bus. Instead they mostly choose to play with them at home.

Imagine a teenage girl who wants to watch an episode of her favourite soap opera. The living-room television is being monopolised by her father, who is watching sport. Her brother is using the computer. What does she do? If she is an American, living in a reasonably affluent household, she simply switches on another television. There is probably one in her bedroom. If she is South Korean or Japanese, on the other hand, she is more likely to live in a high-rise flat with only one set. She settles down in her tiny bedroom, pulls a mobile phone out of her pocket and turns it on. The screen is small but adequate. “You know the characters already,” explains Younghee Yung of Nokia, a phonemaker.

”When asked why people watch mobile television in their homes, Japanese and South Korean media executives tend to make the same gesture. They clutch their mobile phone to their chests, signifying “mine”. The appeal of mobile television is not so much that it is portable but that it is personal. When it proves impossible to reach agreement with other television-watchers in a household, mobile TV is a reasonable fall-back option. It is also a dismal business.

In both Japan and South Korea practically everybody gets their mobile television free. Phones come with receivers that pick up digital broadcast signals, which are usually sent in bursts to conserve battery life. The service was supposed to be supported by advertising, but the prop is weak. Although many Japanese and South Koreans watch television on their phones, they tend to do so briefly and erratically, so programmes often attract small audiences. In South Korea a15-second advertisement on mobile television costs less thanone-tenth of what it would take to reach the same number of viewers on broadcast television.

If mobile TV is not used enough to make money from advertising, it is also not essential enough to persuade lots of people to pay. “There is no business model,” says Kei Shimada of Infinita, a Tokyo consultancy. South Korean broadcasters have threatened to stop paying for reception on the Seoul subway, which was wired for mobile broadcasts in 2005. Seong-Choon Lee of KT, a Korean telecoms firm, says the company is wondering whether to carry on with mobile television at all.

Even before it catches on elsewhere, mobile television is failing in the two countries where it seemed most likely to succeed. The experience of Japan and South Korea suggests that people will watch TV on tiny screens if they have to. But those countries also provide a reminder that popularity does not always translate into business success.Old-fashioned TV wins again.
