AJimmy is an automotive mechanic, but he lost his job a few months ago. He has a good heart, but always feared applying for a new job.One day, he gathered up all his strength and decided to attend a job interview. His appointment was at 10 a.m. and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car. Jimmy immediately went up to lend him a hand. When Jimmy finished working on the car, the old man asked him how much he should pay for the service. Jimmy said there was no need to pay him; he just helped someone in need, and he had to rush for an interview. Then the old man said, “Well, I could take you to the office for your interview. It‟s the least I could do. Please, I insist.” Jimmy agreed.Upon arrival, Jimmy found a long line of applicants waiting to be interviewed. Jimmy still had some grease on him after the car repair, but he did not have much time to wash it off or have a change of shirt. One by one, the applicants left the intervie wer‟s office with disappointed looks on their faces. Finally his name was called. The interviewer was sitting on a large chair facing the office window. Rocking the chair back and forth, he asked, “Do you really need to be interviewed?” Jimmy‟s heart sank.“With the way I look now, how could I possibly pass this interview?” He thought to himself. Then the interviewer turned the chair and to Jimmy‟s surprise, it was the old man he helped earlier in the morning. It turned out he was the General Manager of the company.“Sorry I had to keep you waiting, but I was pretty sure I made the right decision to have you as part of our workforce before you even stepped into this office. I just know you‟d be a trustworthy worker. Congratulations!” Jimmy sat down and the y shared a cup of well-deservedcoffee as he landed himself a new job.21. Why did Jimmy apply for a new job?A. He was sorry for the other applicants.B. There was no hope for him to get the job.C. He regretted helping the old man.D. The interviewer was very rude.BSome people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck. I'm not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don't come into play because they do. Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that's just the reality of how life is.However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in additional to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practising. To become great at certain things, it'll require even more time, time that most people won't put in.This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don't enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It's sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway.Whatever you do , if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you're not willing to put in the time and work, don't expect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won't guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.25. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ______.A. the reasons for success.B. the meaning of successC. the standards of success.D. the importance of success26. In Paragraph 2, the underlined word "that" refers to _______.A. being good at something.B. setting a practical goal.C. putting in more time.D. succeeding in life27. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?A. Successful people like to show their great skills.B. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent.C. People need to achieve success at the cost of life.D. It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success.28. What is the main theme of the passage?A. Having a goal is vital to success.B. Being good is different from being great.C. One cannot succeed without time and practice.D. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success.C.Interested in sharing your views in the Campus Link? They can affect the ability to listen or think, or to speak, or to read, or to write and do mathematics.A person with a learning disability has unusual difficulty in developing these skills. Researchers believe that learning disabilities are caused by differences in the way that the brain works with information. They say children with learning disabilities are not unintelligent or do not want to work. Their brains just process information differently than other people. Researchers say that one in five people in America has some kinds of learning disability. Almost three million children in America receive some kinds of help in school for a learning disability. How can you tell if someone has a learning disability? Experts look for a difference between how well a child does in school and the level of intelligence or ability of the child. But there is no sign of a disorder. A few signs of a learning disability include not connecting letters with their sounds or not understanding what is read. A person with a learning disability may not be able to understand a funny story. They may not follow directions. They may not read numbers correctly or know how to start a task Different people have different kinds of learning disabilities. Another may have difficulty understanding what people are saying. Still another may not be able to express ideas in writing. These different kinds of learning disabilities are known by different names. For example, a person who has difficulty reading may have dyslexia. Someone who cannot do mathematics may have a disorder called dyscalculia (计算困难).Experts say learning disabilities cannot be cured. But people who have them can be helped. Teachers and parents can help young people with learning disabilities to learn successfully.33. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. Cost of learning disabilities.B. How to cure learning disabilities.C. General introduction to learning disabilities.D. Causes of learning disabilities.34. It is believed that ____ is the main cause of learning disabilities.A. different brainB. mother languageC. being lazyD. the different ways the brain works with information35. 四川省内江市第二中学2023-2024学年高三上学期12月月考英语试题学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________一、阅读理解Travel Guide to Hangzhou, a Paradise on EarthHangzhou is now in the spotlight as the main host of the 19th Asian Games. The capital city of East China’s Zhejiang province, is one of the seven ancient capitals of China. Here are some highlights of the city you can't miss.West LakeWest Lake is definitely a place people can never miss when visiting Hangzhou. It is situated in the center of the city, with convenient public transport access. The Hangzhou government also offers free public bikes for tourists to travel around the lake. The parks around the lake are all free to visit.Six Harmonies PagodaStanding on Y uelun Hill, on the north bank of the tidal Qiantang River, the Six Harmonies Pagoda is another masterpiece built during the Wuyue Kingdom — this one designed to conquer flooding from the Qiantang River. The name Six Harmonies was given to characterize its purpose of restoring the balance between the heavens and earth, as well as north, south, east, and west.It was erected in the hope of combating the “evil” river’s tidal action. Today, the 13-storey pagoda commands a spectacular view of the Qiantang River. The Xixi Wetland ParkXixi, located less than five kilometers from West Lake in the west of Hangzhou, is China’s first national wetland park. Brian, at six, wanted something that was his alone, something not handed down — as were his clothes and toys — from his older brother. And so, on Christmas Day 1954, I rose early with my wife to put the tiny kitten a neighbor had given us into the stocking that Brian had carefully fastened to the mantelpiece (壁炉台) the night before. From then on, the life of the cat, Tiger, was full of love. For a sometimes fumbling child, Brian showed great gentleness with Tiger, which was amazing. Every night, when I checked on the children, I would invariably find Tiger on Brian’s bed, stretched out beside him.One evening our next-door neighbor rang the front doorbell. “I’m sorry to have to tell you this,” she said when my wife answered the door, “but when I backed out of the driveway this afternoon, I’m afraid I ran over your cat. I tried to help him, but he jumped up and ran away. I don’t know where he went or how badly he was hurt.”Four weeks passed with no sign of Tiger. Brian tried to hide his fear that his friend had crawled away to die. It was a fear we all shared. And we came to accept his death — all of us except Brian.Every evening Brian would go to the door and call Tiger’s name. Finally, on the 28th day after the neighbor’s unwelcome announcement, he had an answer. Out from under the front porch came Tiger, his tail high, walking with the pride, behaving as if he had never been away. As he approached the door, Brian’s face was transformed with joy. But neither he norTiger displayed open affection in front of the family. There was a calm acceptance, an honoring by each of the other’s dignity. That night, though, when I checked Brian’s room, I saw that his cheeks were wet and a smile was on his face and his arm encircled his cat, who lay purring quietly beside him.4.Why did the author give Brian the cat as a Christmas gift?A.The author had no better choice.B.The neighbor gave the author a cat.C.Brian expected to have a cat of his own.D.The cat is not “second-handed” from Brian’s brother.5.What does the underlined word “fumbling” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Tough.B.Unhappy.C.Careful.D.Excited. 6.What did the next-door neighbor do to Tiger?A.She abandoned Tiger.B.She drove Tiger away.C.She hit Tiger while driving.D.She stepped on Tiger while running.7.What is Brian like according to the text?A.Rough and tolerant.B.Caring and reserved.C.Stubborn and positive.D.Independent and determined.Desperately ill and seeking a miracle, David Bennett Sr. took the last bet on Jan. 7. when be became the first human to be successfully transplanted with the heart of a pig. “It creates the beat; it creates the pressure; it is his heart,” declared Bartley Griffith, director of the surgical team that performed the operation at the University of Maryland Medical Center.Bennett, 57, held on through 60 tomorrows, far longer than any previous patient who’d received a heart from another species. His remarkable run offered new hope that such procedures, known as xenotransplantation (异种移植), could help relieve the shortage of replacement organs, saving thousands of lives each year. The earliest attempts at xenotransplantation of organs, involving kidneys from rabbits, goats, and other animals, occurred in the early 20th century, decades before the first successful human-to-human transplants. Rejection, which occurs when the recipient’s body system recognizes the donor organ as a foreign object and attacks it, followed within hours ordays. Results improved after some special drugs arrived in the 1960s, but most recipients still died after a few weeks. The record for a heart xenotransplant was set in 1983, when an infant named Baby Fae survived for 20 days with an organ from a baboon (狒狒).In recent years, however, advances in gene editing have opened a new possibility: re-edit some genes in animals to provide user-friendly spare parts. Pigs could be ideal for this purpose, because they’re easy to raise and reach adult human size in months. Some biotech companies. including Revivicor, are investing heavily in the field. The donor pig was offered by Revivicor from a line of animals in which 10 genes had been re-edited to improve the heart’s condition. Beyond that, the pig was raised in isolation and tested regularly for viruses that could infect humans or damage the organ itself. This medical breakthrough provided an alternative for the 20% of patients on the heart transplant waiting list who die while waiting or become too sick to be a good candidate. 8.What does the underlined word “run” in paragraph 2 refer to?A.Donating his heart to a patient.B.Performing the heart operation.C.Living for 60 days after the operation.D.Receiving a new heart from a pig.9.Which aspect of xenotransplantation does paragraph 3 mainly focus on?A.Its history.B.Its procedure.C.Its consequence.D.Its significance. 10.What makes pigs ideal for providing spare parts in xenotransplantation?A.Their growth rate and health condition.B.Their life pattern and resistance to viruses.C.Their easiness of keeping and rapid growth.D.Their investment value and natural qualities.11.Why was Bennett’s operation regarded as a breakthrough?A.It introduced new medications to prevent organ rejection.B.It proved the potential for using organs from various animals.C.It guaranteed a sufficient supply of donor pigs for transplants.D.It offered a prospect of replacement organs through gene editing. For adults, communicating in our first language feels easy and natural. Yet learning language is a complex process that is influenced by several factors. When young children arebeginning to learn language, some influences, such as the amount of speech a child hears and the amount of time they spend in back-and-forth language interactions with others, have what may appear to be obvious connections to language learning. Perhaps less obvious is that children’s own physical experiences with their environment help them learn new words. In new research in the cognitive sciences, we investigated how this is the case by considering how children learn words that refer to something they can touch, grasp and interact with. We asked parents to rate how easily a child can physically interact with the object, idea or experiences that a word refers to. We found words that refer to objects that are easy for children to interact with are also words that are learned at an earlier age.For instance, a word such as spoon is usually learned earlier than a word such as sky. And this relationship remains even when we consider other things that can affect word learning, such as how common a word is in everyday language. Words such as spoon and sky are both relevant to everyday life, and so children will probably hear those words quite early in their development. One difference between them is that spoon refers to something they can touch, grasp and interact with, whereas sky does not.Our findings agree with those of studies where babies wore small head-mounted body cameras to record their interactions with objects. Those studies show that the children’s own physical experiences helps them learn new words. For instance, in one study researchers found that 18-month-old babies were more likely to learn the name of a new object when they held that object, and less likely to learn the name if their parent held the new object. Another study found that 15-month-olds who spent more time using new objects had learned more nouns by the time they were 21 months old.12.What is the aim of the new research?A.To see if babies’ physical experiences help them learn new words.B.To investigate how a baby learns names of everyday objects.C.To find out what influences a baby’s language learning.D.To study how a baby interacts with everyday objects.13.Which of the following might a baby learn at an earlier age?A.Bag.B.Heart.C.Milk.D.Leaf. 14.What is the function of the last paragraph?A.To further support their finding.B.To summarize the research result.C.To point out new research directions.D.To introduce results of other findings.15.What can we infer about the author?A.The author is a parent.B.The author is a researcher.C.The author is a professor.D.The author is a journalist.二、七选五Many owners dream of taking a walk with their dog without a rope and those dreams are not impossible. 16Tie a collar around the dog’s neck and attach a rope to the collar. Even though your initial goal is to train the dog to walk off-rope, starting his training with a rope keeps him under control.Teach the dog a “watch me” command. It teaches the dog to focus on your face and watch your eyes, which is important to keeping the dog’s attention when you switch to off-rope work. Call the dog’s name and hold a treat close to his nose. 17 The instant the dog looks up and focuses on your face, give him the treat. Ask the dog to “watch me” frequently during the training until he maintains eye contact with each command.Encourage the dog to walk close by your side. Keep a treat in your left hand, holding it just out of his reach. Tell him “Sit down” and step off, taking a few quick steps forward.18 Slow to a stop, reward him with the treat when he sits, and praise him for remaining in position.19 You may reach the point where you feel your dog is so obedient that a rope is unnecessary. Nonetheless, have a rope with you at all times when you are training or just out and about with your dog. 20 And be aware of rope laws. No matter how confident you are in your dog’s obedience, those laws still apply.A.Give the order and bring the treat toward your eyes.B.You must tie a rope to the collar around the dog’s neck.C.What you need to do is use a firm on-rope training first.D.If he always focuses on the training, give him plenty of praise.E.Always be ready to tie the rope onto his collar if the need arises.F.Speak in an enthusiastic voice and hold the treat within his reach.G.Repeat the on-rope work with the dog off-rope until he performs perfectly.三、完形填空28.A.wondered B.doubted C.believed D.worried 29.A.appetite B.plan C.gift D.space 30.A.charge B.problem C.doubt D.excuse 31.A.treat B.privilege C.favor D.donation 32.A.raising B.expecting C.holding D.educating 33.A.reminded B.trusted C.remembered D.missed 34.A.settled B.received C.skimmed D.split 35.A.wetter B.bigger C.heavier D.dirtier 36.A.served B.preserved C.refried D.thrown 37.A.life B.baby C.wife D.diet 38.A.local B.family C.chain D.grocery 39.A.accepted B.appreciated C.encouraged D.squeezed 40.A.inhabitants B.members C.customers D.hosts四、用单词的适当形式完成短文五、短文改错51.假定英语课上老师要求同桌之间交换修改作文,请你修改你同桌写的以下作文。
