Shenzhen: From a Little Fishing Village to a Huge Modern City!
Hi, my name is Lily and I'm going to tell you all about the amazing changes that have happened in the city of Shenzhen over the past few decades. It's so crazy to think about how different it was back then compared to now!
A Long Time Ago...
Way back before I was even born, Shenzhen used to be a really small fishing village. Can you imagine? Just a tiny little place with not much going on at all. My grandparents have told me stories about how there were just a bunch of old houses, farms, and fishing boats. That's it! No tall skyscrapers, no subways, no giant shopping malls. Just a sleepy little village where everyone knew each other.
Some of the older people in my family actually grew up in that little fishing village version of Shenzhen. They say life was really simple back then. The kids would run around playing
games outdoors all day since there weren't any video games or phones to distract them. Families would grow their own fruits and vegetables. Fishermen would go out on their little boats to catch fish to sell at the market. It sounds like it was a pretty
laid-back lifestyle.
But then in 1980, everything started to change dramatically for Shenzhen...
The Transformation Begins
China's government decided to make Shenzhen one of the very first "Special Economic Zones." That meant they wanted to develop it into a major hub for business, trade and manufacturing. Wild, right? Taking this sleepy fishing village and trying to turn it into an important economic center.
At first, I can only imagine how weird it must have seemed for the locals to suddenly have all these new factories and companies setting up shop in their little village. Cranes and construction crews started showing up to build roads, housing developments and office towers. People from all over China (and even other countries) started moving to Shenzhen to find work. It was like their tiny, quiet village was being invaded!
Still, change kept rolling on quickly. Shenzhen kept growing bigger and bigger. More factories, more companies, more people. Skyscrapers started going up. Subway lines were built. Universities opened their doors. Shopping malls and restaurants replaced old buildings. Shenzhen was totally transforming into a major city right before everyone's eyes!
The Shenzhen We Know Today
Wow, has Shenzhen ever changed a lot since those early fishing village days! These days, it's one of the biggest, most modern cities in the entire world. I'm just in 5th grade and Shenzhen has been a huge, booming city for as long as I can remember.
Whenever my parents drive me around Shenzhen, I'm amazed by all the skyscrapers, busy roads, subways and construction that's still happening everywhere you look. The city's skyline is so sleek and futuristic with glass towers streaking into the sky. We have awesome public transit to get around on the subways, buses and trains. There are endless giant shopping malls filled with every store you can imagine. The streets buzz with musicians, food stalls, and crowds of people out and about.
Shenzhen is considered a major global technology hub these days too. Some of the biggest tech companies in the world like
Huawei, Tencent and ZTE are headquartered right here. The economic growth has been mind-blowing! My dad works at a robotics company and is always talking about the latest innovations happening in Shenzhen's tech sector. Who could have imagined that this high-tech megalopolis used to be a tiny fishing village?
Of course, with a huge population of over 12 million people, Shenzhen can also feel crowded and overwhelming at times. The traffic is notoriously bad. The cost of living keeps going up. There's construction noise everywhere you go. And with all the factories, the air pollution can get pretty terrible some days. My grandparents joke that they miss the "good old days" of quiet village life sometimes!
A Bright Future Ahead
Still, I feel really lucky to be growing up in a vibrant, cultural city like Shenzhen. The opportunities here are endless - whether it's getting a great education, having fun at the theme parks and natural sights nearby, or one day getting a job in an exciting field.
Shenzhen is young for a major city too, just about 40 years old! That means it's still evolving all the time. New buildings, new
parks, new train lines are always being constructed. Shenzhen's story of growth and development is far from over.
Who knows what amazing changes will happen to Shenzhen in the years ahead as I grow up? Maybe homes will be built underwater or on the moon. Maybe we'll all be commuting in flying cars instead of subways. Or maybe Shenzhen will become the first city populated by robots! One thing's for sure, if the past few decades are any indication, you can expect Shenzhen to always be transforming into something new and incredible. What a fascinating place to call home!

Here's an essay about the past and present of Shenzhen from the perspective of an elementary school student, written in English with a length of approximately 2,000 words:
Shenzhen: From a Tiny Village to a Mega City
Hey there! My name is Lily, and I'm a 10-year-old girl who loves telling stories. Today, I'm going to share with you the amazing story of Shenzhen – a city that has transformed from a tiny fishing village to a bustling metropolis in just a few decades!
A Long Time Ago...
Let's travel back in time to the 1970s. Shenzhen was just a sleepy little village with lots of rice paddies, fishermen, and not much else. People lived simple lives, and everything seemed so peaceful and quiet. Can you imagine a place without tall buildings, fancy cars, and all the hustle and bustle of a modern city? That's how Shenzhen used to be!
But then, something amazing happened! In 1980, the Chinese government decided to make Shenzhen a Special Economic Zone. This meant that the city could have special rules and laws to attract foreign companies and investments. It was like a magic wand that turned Shenzhen into a place of opportunity and growth.
The Transformation Begins
As soon as the Special Economic Zone was established, people from all over China and the world started flocking to Shenzhen. Factories and businesses began sprouting up like mushrooms after a rainy day. The once-quiet village was quickly turning into a bustling city.
I can picture the construction sites everywhere, with workers in hard hats building skyscrapers and highways. The sound of hammers and drills must have filled the air, and the skyline must have changed every single day!
Shenzhen Today
Fast forward to the present day, and Shenzhen is almost unrecognizable from its humble beginnings. It's now a modern, vibrant city with a population of over 12 million people! Imagine a place with towering skyscrapers that touch the clouds, bustling streets filled with people and cars, and bright neon lights that make the city glow like a million stars.
Shenzhen is also a hub for technology and innovation. Companies like Huawei, Tencent, and DJI have their headquarters here, and they're constantly creating new gadgets and inventions that make our lives easier and more fun. Just think about all the cool smartphones, drones, and apps that come from this city!
But Shenzhen isn't just about tall buildings and technology. It's also a place with beautiful parks, fascinating museums, and delicious food from all over China and the world. I love visiting the Shenzhen Museum to learn about the city's history, and then stopping by a street food stall for some tasty dumplings or barbecued skewers!
The Future Awaits
As amazing as Shenzhen is today, I can't wait to see what the future holds for this incredible city. Maybe one day, we'll have flying cars zooming through the skies or robot assistants helping us with our daily chores. Who knows, maybe someday Shenzhen will even have a colony on Mars!
One thing is for sure – Shenzhen's story is one of transformation, growth, and endless possibilities. From a tiny fishing village to a global powerhouse, this city has proven that anything is possible with hard work, determination, and a bit of imagination.
So, the next time you visit Shenzhen or learn about its history, remember the incredible journey it has taken. And who knows, maybe one day you'll be part of the team that shapes Shenzhen's future and writes the next chapter in its amazing story!

Shenzhen: Then and Now
Wow, Shenzhen is such an amazing city! It's hard to believe it used to be a small fishing village. Let me tell you all about how Shenzhen has changed over the years.
A Long Time Ago
My grandparents told me that when they were kids, Shenzhen was just a teeny tiny place with farms, fish markets, and not much else. Can you imagine? No tall skyscrapers, no subway, no big shopping malls! Just fields, little houses, and lots of nature everywhere.
My grandma said she used to go fishing with her dad in the river and they would catch tons of fish. Then they would take the fish home and my great-grandma would cook a delicious dinner over an open fire. No restaurants or fast food back then!
Instead of playgrounds, my grandpa and his friends would play outside in the fields and orchards. They loved climbing trees, catching frogs, and exploring the countryside. Shenzhen was so peaceful and quiet compared to the big, busy city it is today.
Things Started Changing
Then in 1979, something really amazing happened - Shenzhen became China's first Special Economic Zone! This meant it would have special laws to help businesses grow and develop.
Suddenly, people from all over China and the world started moving to Shenzhen to open companies and factories. Tall buildings began going up, roads were built, and the little fishing
village transformed into a booming city right before everyone's eyes!
My dad remembers watching the skyline change year after year as he was growing up. He said it was scary at first with all the construction and noise. But it was also exciting to see Shenzhen becoming a powerful economic force.
Shenzhen in Modern Times
Today, Shenzhen is one of the richest and most advanced cities in China and even the whole world! It has awesome architecture like the Ping An Finance Center which is over 600 meters tall. The public transit system is incredible with metros, buses, and high-speed rail going everywhere.
Shenzhen produces loads of high-tech goods like computers, smartphones, and electronics. It's a major center for research, innovation, and startups too. Many of my friends' parents work at huge companies headquartered here like Tencent and Huawei.
We have terrific schools, libraries, museums, and attractions like Window of the World and Splendid China. The Shenzhen Bay Sports Center hosted big events for the 2011 Summer Universiade. There are massive shopping areas, gorgeous parks, and restaurants serving cuisine from all over the globe.
Comparing Then and Now
Can you even believe how much Shenzhen has transformed? It went from a tiny village to an international megacity in just a few decades! Here are some of the biggest changes:
•Population - In the 1970s there were only around 30,000 people living in Shenzhen. Now the Greater Shenzhen Area has over 12 million residents! That's about the same as the entire country of Belgium.
•Buildings - Shenzhen used to have mostly little one or two story houses and huts made of wood or concrete. These days it's famous for its modern skyscrapers and architecture like the Shenzhen Civic Center which has two towers joined at the top.
•Jobs - Most people worked as farmers, fishermen, or in small local businesses decades ago. But now millions are employed in technology, finance, manufacturing, trade, and other major industries.
•Transportation - Getting around used to mean walking, biking, or taking a bus on the few roads. But Shenzhen is so high-tech now with subways, water buses, ferries, high-speed rail, and tons of cars and highways.
•Culture - In the past, Shenzhen didn't have much entertainment or culture beyond local festivals and markets. However, it has become a diverse, cosmopolitan city with amazing food, arts, nightlife, sports, and attractions from everywhere.
My Shenzhen Experience
I'm so lucky I get to grow up in modern Shenzhen! On weekends, my parents take me to Shenzhen's theme parks, museums, or just fun areas like OCT Bay to explore. We always take the metro since it's fast, cheap, and there's no traffic. My favorite is the Window of the World because I get to see architecture and landmarks from all over like the Eiffel Tower and Pyramids!
At school, we learn coding, robotics, and all about the cool tech companies here. We even went on a field trip to Tencent and got to see their AI robots! I also take kung fu lessons at the martial arts academy near my house. There's just so much to do in Shenzhen.
Sometimes my grandparents show me old photos of the little village Shenzhen used to be. It's weird picturing the city like that before all the construction. I'm glad Shenzhen modernized
so we can have all these awesome opportunities, but I bet the old village was pretty neat too back in the day.
Shenzhen's Future
Based on how rapidly Shenzhen has grown, who knows what the city will look like 20 or 30 years from now when I'm an adult? Maybe they'll have flying cars, super tall buildings over 1 kilometer high, or new incredible technology we can't even imagine yet!
One thing's for sure - Shenzhen will definitely keep developing and striving to be even more innovative and amazing. The leaders here have big visions and plans to make it an elite global city and hub for the absolute latest advancements.
I can't wait to see what the future holds for my hometown. Perhaps one day I'll be working at a cutting-edge AI or biotech company right here in Shenzhen! No matter what though, I'll always remember Shenzhen's humble roots as a little fishing village that bloomed into a megalopolis before everyone's eyes. What an inspiring transformation!。
