Monmouth, Wales, a small town in the United Kingdom where King Henry V was born, has made history again by8becoming the world’s first Wikipedia Town. Since May 19, visitors have been able to take an in-depth wiki tour of the town with their phones by scanning more than 1,000 different bar codes that have been placed on various landmarks(地标).The phones immediately find out each landmark's Wikipedia page. Created in 2001, Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia(百科全书) written and edited by anyone who wants to contribute. It attracts more than 400 million visitors each month. The Monmouth project, called Monmouthpedia, aims to describe every famous place, person, object, plant, and animal in the town in as many languages as possible. Over the past six months, many people came together to make that happen. The town has free town-wide Wi-Fi.

Justin and Brandy Besemer were newly married and trying to pay off their wedding debt when they decided their family needed a dog — an American Bulldog named Kaila. Thus started one of their first arguments. Brandy, who had never raised a dog before, wanted to spend a little over $ 300 a year buying pet insurance. Justin, who had always kept dogs, thought it was a waste of money.“His parents told me this horror story that made me insist we get it, ” explained Brandy, 28. “They were talking about their dog having to have a knee replaced and it cost them like $ 2,000. We couldn’t afford that. I just didn’t want to get a dog if I couldn’t afford to take care of it. ”When Kaila chewed up a string of Christmas lights a few months later, landing the dog in an emergency veterinary center, the Santa Monica couple was relieved that Brandy had gained the upper hand. When they found that the dog had infections and food allergies, the y realized that without the insurance they wouldn’t have been able to afford treatment for Kaila.“We joke that she’s our little lemon, ” Brandy said. “This is the longest we’ve gone without having to take her to the vet, and it’s been maybe three weeks.”Although the Besemers are delighted that they spent the money buying pet insurance, plenty of experts agree with Justin’s first assessment: It’s a waste of money. If the couple had a different policy or a different temper, it might be. However, as is true with many personal finance decisions, the smart choice on pet insurance is a personal one.In general, experts claim that it’s wasteful to insure against risks that are not catastrophic. It doesn’t make sense, for example, to buy pet insurance to pay for ro utine medical issues such as injections and checkups. That’s because you’ll pay roughly as much for the coverage as the treatment. Whether it makes sense to buy a policy for major medical bills relies on two things: emotion and finances. If you would be em otionally ruined to lose a pet simply because you couldn’t afford to treat it — and a $ 5 ,000 vet bill would be more than your budget could take —you might want to consider a policy. But if you have the resources to pay for emergencyvet care — or wouldn’t be saddened to lose a pet if you didn’t — you could skip pet insurance.51. What did Justin and Brandy Besemer argue about?A. The way of setting aside money.B. The possibility of adopting a dog.C. The necessity of buying pet insurance.D. The burden of paying off their debt.52. According to the passage, who valued Brandy’s choice on pet insurance?A. The vet.B. The experts.C. Justin’s parents.D. Brandy’s mother.53. According to the passage, experts argue that pets ____.A. are unlikely to suffer serious diseasesB. might have a temper similar to their ownersC. will waste their owners’ large sums of moneyD. impose a negative effect on their owners’ emotion54. According to the passage, what decides whether to buy pet insurance?A. Budget and emotion.B. Injections and checkups.C. Risks and benefits.D.

Its complex weaving techniques, various colors and patterns, and its particular choices of materials make it valuable and ancient people said, “An inch of brocade, an inch of gold.” Today, the traditional characteristics and unique skills of yunjin remain to be an award-winning art treasure. Its techniques are passed down from generation to generation by artisans.Zhou Shuangxi, a national-level inheritor of yunjin weaving techniques, is one of them. Back in 1973, he graduated from a mining school and was selected to become a student at the NanjingYunjin Research Institute along with five other students, just because he was “in good shape”. There were only several masters in their 70s and not even a loom (织布机) to use. “The old masters finally remembered a loom was stored somewhere. When I opened the door, I saw what seemed like a pile of wood,” Zhou recalled.“Weaving was difficult, but different from mining. Mining requires heavy physical labor, but working with the soft and thin silk requires studying and practicing in front of a loom for decades until you master the technique. My hands became quite awkward due to mining, so I used to put my hands in warm water whenever I could. In this way, they could become softer and weave the silk more easily,” he said.Out of the six or so students, Zhou is the only one who has insisted on the trade to this day.Having devoted the past five decades to yunjin production despite all the sweat and struggles, he has developed his techniques to the point where he can weave the antique dragon robes in all their small details. He also made various artworks that not only show China's intangible cultural heritage but also serve as Zhou Shuangxi's artistic creations.“I am lucky to be in such a good era and I have the honor of being a representative inheritor,” Zhou said.4.What was Zhou's original impression of yunjin weaving techniques as a student?A.They faced an uncertain future.B.They were popular among the public.C.They required much physical strength.D.They were closely related to his schooling. 5.Why did Zhou put his hands in warm water?A.To relieve the pain of mining.B.To make them much handier.C.To gain an attractive appearance.D.To rest his hands and draw inspiration. 6.What kind of person is Zhou probably according to the text?A.Determined and creative.B.Awkward and hesitant.C.Encouraging and honest.D.Adventurous and sociable.7.What's the text mainly about?A.The ups and downs of yunjin.B.People's appreciation of a traditional art treasure.C.Artisans' struggle to pass down traditional techniques.D.A national-level inheritor of yunjin weaving techniques. If you struggle with insomnia (失眠)— and, consequently, the bed-covers—you probably have been tempted to try anything that promises better sleep. One thing might sound a little strange but has been known to work: adding a weighted blanket to those bed-covers. “It has become the sleep tool to have,” says Alanna McGinn, founder and lead sleep expert at Good Night Sleep Site. “I’m a huge supporter because it can work so well.”About 32% of Americans don’t get enough sleep, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Experts there recommend at least seven hours of shut-eye per night for adults. But as many as 35% of adults have trouble sleeping from time to time, and 10% regularly have trouble falling and staying asleep. The weight—usually between 5 and 30 pounds, which sounds like a lot but is spread out over the entire bed—comes from plastic, glass or metal balls surrounded by filling. The heaviness imitates a touch therapy called deep pressure stimulation. Just as swaddling babies can send them to sleep, using a weighted blanket helps your heart and breathing slow and your body release feel good hormones, including serotonin.A 2020 review looked at eight studies and concluded that weighted blankets helped reduce anxiety but not necessarily insomnia. Other research tells a slightly different story. A study in Sweden in 2020 looked at 120 people with insomnia and also depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety or attention-deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Those who used a weighted blanket reported that they had better sleep and were less tired, anxious and depressed during the day.People with circulatory conditions such as diabetes, or breathing issues such as asthma or sleep apnea (窒息), should check with their doctor before using a weighted blanket. “And if you’re someone who gets a little claustrophobic, it’s probably not the best thing for you,” adds McGinn.8.What will people with insomnia probably do?A.Tend to be cheated.B.Struggle to drop asleep.C.Work for the sleep tool.D.Be cautious about the blanket.9.What is the second paragraph mainly about?A.The severity of sleep trouble.B.Americans suffering insomnia.C.Sleep difficulty caused by aging.D.Experts’ advice on sleeping hours. 10.Why does the author mention “swaddling babies” in paragraph 3?A.To define a concept.B.To present a result.C.To explain the principle.D.To draw a conclusion.11.What can be inferred about the application of the weighted blanket?A.It can extend people’s lifespan.B.It can help people feel more relaxed.C.It is friendly to people with breathing issues.D.It is a request to get the doctor s permission. As Geoffrey Hinton, widely seen as the godfather of artificial intelligence, warns aboutgrowing dangers from how it is developing, businesses are scrambling to see how they can use the technology to their advantage.Recently, the hot topic is how to employ ChatGPT style technology across their businesses as quickly as possible. A boss looked at his computer, entered the transcript of a customer complaint call, and asked ChatGPT to respond to it based on set of rules. In about a minute it came up with a very credible answer, which was 85% accurate but only cost 1% of the cost of employing staff. The good news for all is the pure enhancement to productivity.Technology has improved the quality of life. A lot of innovation has made our entertainment time more enjoyable. But the real shock has been that these technologies are usable in a commercial context, not just for “low-cognitive, repetitive” tasks, i. e. robotic-tasks likely to be automated. The surprise has been how employable the technology is to highly creative, high-value work. Specifically, creating an image, or music, or coding a programme can be achieved in seconds rather than weeks of briefing and refining. So the good news is that rapid employment of this technology could solve the longstanding productivity crisis. The bad news is that it could occur so rapidly as to overtake workers’ ability to adapt in time, creating social crisis. Could we face in call centers and creative studios in the 2020s, the equivalent of what happened in the coal mines in the 1980s?Some individuals have started to suggest that states should provide a basic income due to the possibility of AI leading to job loss. The response of tech enthusiasts is that “You won’t be replaced by an AI, but you might be replaced by someone who knows how to use AI”. But they used to say that’s why everybody should learn how to code. That might not be such wise career advice any more.12.What do we learn about ChatGPT?A.It improves customers’ satisfaction.B.It enhances productivity and reduces cost.C.It perfects customers’ ability to summarize.D.It revolutionizes the business with accuracy.13.How has technology influenced individuals?A.By enriching leisure time.B.By increasing dependence.C.By simplifying people’s work.D.By reshaping entertainment forms. 14.What does the underlined word “equivalent” in paragraph 4 mean?A.Alternative.B.Opposite.C.Similarity.D.Reference. 15.What is the author s attitude towards the application of AI?A.Intolerant.B.Favorable.C.Indifferent.D.Objective.For most people traveling abroad, their first choice is probably to rush directly to tourist sights. For me. I find lots of joy in grocery shopping on holiday. As a vegetarian, finding restaurants that meet my needs is not always easy abroad. 16 The first thing I do, after dropping my bags off, is to go to a grocery store. That enables me to cook breakfast in the morning without walking around for hours trying to find “vegan breakfast” near me.The variety of foods attracts me every time I travel somewhere new. In Malta, I found the most delicious chocolate-filled cakes, the ones I would struggle to find even in the UK. 17 I was so delighted that I could enjoy such an unexpected treat. Another surprise was their selection of ice cream available even in the smallest grocery stores.18 Looking for smoked tofu and corn pancakes turns into quite a mission wheneverI visit Cluj-Napoca in Romania. There is usually only one variety of smoked tofu, sold in a very small tub (食品盒) and only in the cafeteria section. 19 That is because they are never available at the smaller ones.Grocery shopping on holiday sounds unusual. But it means being involved in the day-to-day lives of a country’s citizens. I can pretend I am a local and put myself in their shoes. I can watch kids begging their parents for sweets, an international experience that needs no language, or watch couples pick up snacks and drinks for a party on a Friday night. 20A.I ended up eating these every day for breakfast.B.The challenge of finding food is interesting. too.C.The smoked product is unique and specially packed.D.So I always make sure to book a place with a kitchen.E.It’s an act of understanding people as much as of buying food.F.Corn pancakes always require a trip to the bigger grocery store.G.By wandering around in a new country, I start to see what they value. Joe became interested in metal detecting when his parents gave him a metal detector as a child. AA letter of reply is sometimes a most treasured thing. Here is a story that tells about this common and natural human sentiment. The busiest woman in Labrador during one bitter cold Christmas not very long ago, was an Australian nurse by the naI11e of Kate Austen. But Nurse Austen was not too busy to acknowledge with a long, friendly letter every gift of food or clothing received for distribution to the natives in that cold and poor district of the north. Among the gifts was a box of knittings for children, knitted(编织)and sent by a woman in Toronto.Nurse Austen was busy, exhausted and not feeling too well that winter. She could have written just ordinary routine notes of acknowledgement. But that was not her way. She sat down and wrote the woman in Toronto a real letter telling all about the vill age, and the names of the children who were wearing the knitted gloves and caps, and what they said -when they got them, and how they looked when they wore them. She wanted the woman who had knitted and sent all those lovely knittings "to see how much happiness and warmth she had created." Not long after, she received the following answer from Canada.Dear Miss Austen:Your letter made me happy. I did not expect such a full return. I am eighty years old, and I am blind. There is little I can do exce pt knit, and that is why I knit so many caps and sweaters and scarves.Of course I cannot write this, so my daughter-in-law is doing it for me.She also sewed the seams and made the buttonholes for the knitted things.I know something of the work you are doing. At the age of nineteen I marrieda man who was going to China to be a missionary(传教士). For forty years, with anoccasional year at home in America, we Worked in China, and during that time our two sons and a daughter were born to us, of whom only one son survives.\After forty years, my husband's health bega n to fail. We returned to the States where he took charge of a settlement house in Brooklyn, New York. A surprising number of the problems we f aced there were similar to the problems we had met in China. When my husband died, I came to Toronto to live with my son and daughter-in-law. They are very good to me, and I pride myself that I am little trouble to them, though it is hard for a blind old lady to be sure of anything. What I most want to say, my dear, is this. What about the people who invented the traffic light and the windshield wiper(雨刮器)?Shouldn't we know who they are?Joan McLean thinks so. In fact, McLean, a professor of physics at Mountain University in Range, feels so strongly about this matter that she's developed a course on the topic. I n addition to learning “who”invented“what”, however, McLean also likes her student s to l earn the answers to the“why” and “ho w” questions. According to McLean,“When students learn the answers to these questions, they are better prepared to recognize opportunities for inventing and more motivated to give i nventing a try.”Her students agree. One young man with a patent for an unbreakable umbrella is walking proof of McLean's statement. “If I had not heard the story of the windshield wiper's invention,”said Tommy Lee, a senior physics major,“I never would have dreamed of turning my bad experience during a rainstorm into something so constructive.”Lee is currently negotiating to sell his patent to an umbrella producer. So, just what is the story behind the windshield wiper? Well,Mary Anderson came up with the idea in 1902 after a visit to New York City. The day was cold and stormy, but Anderson still wanted to see the sights,so she jumped aboard a streetcar. Noticing that the driver was struggling to see through the snow covering the windshield, she found herself wondering why th ere couldn't be a builtin device for cleaning the window. Still wondering about this when she returned home to Birmingham, Alabama, Anderson started drafting out solutions. One of her ideas, a lever(操作杆)on the inside of a vehicle that would control an arm on the outside, became the first windshield wiper.Today we benefit from countless inventions and innovations. It's hard to imagine driving without Garrett A.Morgan's traffic light. It's equally impossible to picturea world without Katherine J.Blodgett's innovation that makes glass invisible. Can you picture life without clear windows and eyeglasses?

Elfdalian sounds nothing like the country's national language, Swedish, which press secretary Bjorm Rehnstrom said affected the language about 100 years ago. At that point, Elfdalian declined. Musicians are creating new songs with Elfdalian. Several children's books were also translated into EIfdalian, including Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery. They said they hate the “involution (内卷),” joking that they would rather give up some of what they have than get trapped in an endless competition against peers.“Instead of always following the ‘virtues’ of struggle, endure and sacrifice to bear the stresses, they prefer a temporary lying down as catharsis (宣泄) and adjustment,” said a scholar. “It is no wonder that some young people, under the growing pressures from child-raising to paying the mortgage (按揭) today, would try to live in a simple way and leave the worries behind.”Interestingly, the majority of millennials and Gen Zs reached by the Global Times, who claim to be big fans of the lying down philosophy, acknowledged that they only accept a temporary lying down as a short rest. It is true that with the great improvement of living conditions, some Chinese youth have partially lost the spirit of hardship and are not willing to bear too much hard work. But in fact, lying down is not entirely comfortable. Young people who lie down always feel guilty about their constant loss of morale (士气) far beyond their reach.“Young people on campus have both aspirations and confusion about their future, but most of us have rejected setting ourselves up in chains to waste opportunities and challenges,” a postgraduate student told the Global Times. “It’s no use running away. Now scientists have figured out what makes the tree’s sting so bad.The rainforests of eastern Australia are home to a stinging tree known as Dendrocnide. Many people callit the gympie-gympie tree—a name given to the tree by native Australians. It’s covered with sharp, needle-like hairs that carry poison. If you touch a gympie-gympie tree, you won’t forget it anytime soon. The pain can stay with you for hours, days or weeks. In some cases, it’s been reported to stay for months.Scientists have long looked for the source of this powerful sting. Now researchers at the University of Queensland have discovered what makes this stinging plant so painful. After carefully studying different kinds of gympie-gympie trees, the scientists were able to separate out different chemicals that the trees produce. This allowed them to identify a group of chemicals that they believed was responsible for the pain. The researchers created artificial versions of these chemicals, which they call “gympietides”. Sure enough, when the scientists injected mice with gympietides, the mice licked(舔) at the places where they’d been injected, indicating that they hurt in those places. When the scientists studied the way gympietides were built, they found that they formed a knot-like shape. The shape makes the chemicals very stable, which helps explain why the pain stays so long. The knot-like shape of the gympietides was similar to the shape of poisons produced by poisonous spiders and cone snails. The scientists were surprised to see three very different kinds of life all using similar poisons. Spiders and cone snails carry poisons because they catch food by stinging other creatures. It’s not clear howstinging helps the gympie-gympie tree.Though the tree’s sting may stop some animals from eating it, it doesn’t stop all animals. Beetles and pademelons (small s of the kangaroo) are able to eat the plant without trouble.8. Why is a touch on the stinging tree unforgettable?A. Because it has so unusual an appearance.B. My parents sent me a cake, which was a great cake. But I remember having this large cake and ly no one to share it with. I ended throwing out the cake after having one piece, with about 90 % of it leftover. That night I was depressed that I decided to go outside to the freezing temperature of the winter and run. I put my earphones in, went outside and ran about 2 miles at 11 p.m. on my birthday. When I got back inside I was content. I was proud of what I was able to do. The next night I did the same. I wasn’t quick or fit but you know that I went outside and did something. This continued for about 2 months until I finally worked up the courage to go to the gym, where I started swimming again as I used to in high school. Amonth went by and I started lifting weights and continually running.Looking back I can see that exercise helped cure my depression but it didn’t only do that. At the gym I met new friends and back at my dorm I grew confidence to go to the end of the hall seeing people playing Super Smash Brothers and ask if I could join.So go forward to present now. I exercise every day and look forward to that hour and a half I get daily to do what I love with people who love it as well. I hope this helps someone who may be or have been in a similar situation.12. What made the author decide to run at night?A. His l9th birthday.B. His parents’ cake.C. His loneliness.D. His friends.13. However, when I left home for senior school, he called me frequently a nd just asked me, “How’s your study and life? When will you come back?” Gradually, I realized that he missed me although he would never say it out.Indeed, fathers’ love is like a mountain. It’s heavy because they devote all their love to us and it’s silent because they do not know how to express it. Faced with their love, we should accept it silently to show our appreciation.书面表达每逢假期,清华、北大等多所国内知名高校都会迎来大批游客。

One Possible VersionNowadays, it is becoming increasingly popular for tourists to visit famous universities such as Peking University and Tsinghua University during the holidays. However, some universities decide to limit the number of visitors, which has caused heated argument in China.I think the number of tourists should be limited. Here are my reasons: first of all, there are too many tourists wandering through the school yard, teaching buildings, or even the library, which has a negative effect on the students who are absorbed in learning. Second, with so many tourists coming, it is harder for security guards to keep order. Third, universities are designed to provide education rather than tourism service. In summary, universities should limit the number of tourists to ensure a good learning environment.
