Kites were invented by the Chinese people over 2000 years ago.
In ancient time, kite was called “Yao 鹞" and also was well known as "Yuan 鸢" in northern region of China. (古时称为“鹞” yào ,北方称为“鸢” yuān. )

Traditional Chinese kite skill summarized up only four words: firm, paste, paint, put. But in fact these four words are connotation much broader, including nearly all traditional Chinese kite skills. Our country attaches great importance to the protection of intangible cultural heritage, On May 20, 2006, kite making skill with the approval of the State Council listed in the first national nonmaterial cultural heritage list. 传统中国风筝的技艺概括起来只有四个字:扎、糊、绘、放。 简称“四艺”。简单地理解这“四艺”即扎架子,糊纸面,绘 花彩,放风筝。但实际上这四字的内涵要广泛得多,几乎包含 了全部传统中国风筝的技艺内容。如“扎”包括:选、劈、弯、 削、接。“糊”包括:选、裁、糊、边、校。“绘”包括:色、 底、描、染、修。“放”包括:风、线、放、调、收。而这 “四艺”的综合活用就要达到风筝的设计与创新的水平。 我们 国家非常重视非物质文化遗产的保护,2006年5月20日,风筝 制作技艺经国务院批准列入第一哲人墨翟(公元 前478-392年)墨子制造的木鹞是最早的风筝, 也是世界上最早的风筝 。最初风筝常被利用为军 事工具,用于三角测量信号、天空风向测查和通 讯的手段。

The structure of the kite
❖ The shape of the kite mainly imitates nature's creatures, such as birds, insects and solid geometry (立体几何).Resulted from individual preferences, the pattern of kite can be designed into specific items, such as propaganda(宣传) signs, butterflies as well as birds .Usually The kite is made of silk, paper or plastic materials. Someone, however, even designed a boneless kite. It has a hole made from silk which the wind could go through and form a light air pillow. With the help of air column, it could fly with the wind.
