Some people say that the tomato is a kind of fruit. Others say it's a vegetable. But in Bunol, a small town in Spain, tomatoes are weapons. Each year, on the last Wednesday of August, people in the town or from all over the world start a tomato fight. After a two - hour long fight, these people are all wet and covered from head to toe in tomato juice.
Nobody knows exactly how the food fight started. One possible story is that everything began in 1945. When some young people wanted to join a parade (HY) , they pushed others to move along. Soon there was a real fight near a market. They took tomatoes from vendors (小贩) and threw them at each other angrily. The next year, those young men met again. This time they prepared their own tomatoes for the fight. So the tomato festival, La Tomatina, has been held since then.
