The setting:Urban England (the cities), but also rural England (the countryside) including remote English villages.
The theme: The main theme is a teenage research of self-discovery, in this case the search for a mother from whom the hero was separated at an early age. Its other concerns are love, getting on with others, being persistent and courageous and trying to deal with doubts, troubles and worries. The turning point: The turning point in the story es while James’ foster parents are away in London, and he wonders about the identity of his birth mother. The only clue he has is a fossil, “the snake stone” which she left behind along with a note on which she had written: “Take good care of Sammie. It was written on a torn envelope with parts of an address still there.
The journey: Instead of going to London, James decides to find his birth mother. With help from his geography teacher, James sets out for the remote country village where his mother might be found. James has painful, challenging, but also humorous and happy travels. The mother he finally meets, Anne, has a minor yet powerful voice in the novel. He es to understand why she left him at a stranger’s door fifteen years before. Although the meeting is not long, it leaves him with a feeling of pleteness. So,every day Ms Cheng carries a bag of parcels, letters and documents of all shapes and sizes and does her rounds in North Po int. She’s a courier(快递人员).
Five years ago,Ms Cheng was a nurse at a private clinic. She had worked there for almost 30 years but was made jobless when the doctor migrated(移居).It was extremely difficult for her to find another job. “People do not trust my ability when they learn how old I am,” she said. After two years of searching, the
mother of two eventually found another nursing job. But then after two years, she quit. Why?
“My colleagues were young and they didn’t understand me because of my age. They often asked me,‘You are so old;what are you working for?’ I was very unhappy.” she said. Then, one of Ms Cheng’s neighbors told her about Employee’s Retraining Board (ERB) offering retraining courses for older people on specific occupations, such as convenience store assistants, junior clerks and so on.

Chong, who runs the pany, said. Currently,Mr Chong has 60 couriers working for his pany:five of them are over fifty, four of whom have been through the ERB plan. Mr Chong said he hired older people because they were able and reliable. “Age is not an important factor but attitude is. Many old people are more capable than the youngsters. Teachers’and students’stress may be connected , according to a University of British Columbia study. The study is the first of its kind to examine the connection between teachers’ stress and students’ cortisol(皮质醇) levels.
Researchers collected saliva (唾液) samples from over 400 primary school children and tested their cortisol levels . they found that in classrooms in which teachers experienced more stress, or feelings of emotional exhaustion, students’cortisol levels increased. Higher cortisol levels in primary school children have been connected to stress, learning difficulties as well as mental health problems.
“ This suggests that stress contagion (传染) might be taking place in the
classroom among students and their teachers,” said Eva Oberle, the study ‘s lead author and new assistant professor with the Human Early Learning Partnership(HELP) at UBC’s school of population and public health. “The order of the occurrence of increased cortisol and teacher’ stress is still unknown. We consider the connection between students’and teachers’ stress a cyclical problem in the classroom.”
Oberle said a stressful classroom climate could be a result of negative support for teachers, which may damage teachers’ability to effectively control their students. A poorly managed classroom can lead to students’ needs not being met and increasing stress, which could be shown in increased stress cortisol levels in students.
Stress could e from students who may be more challenging to teach because of increases in anxiety, behavioral problems, or special needs. In this situation, teachers could feel helpless and report higher levels of stress. “Our study is a reminder of the systemic problems facing teachers and educators as classroom sizes increase and support for teachers is cut,” said Oberle.
“It is clear from a number of recent studies that teaching is one of the most stressful professions, and that teachers need positive resources and
support in their jobs in order to alleviate stress in the classroom,”said UBC education professor Kimberly Schonert-Reichl, the study’s co-author and director of HELP. “If we do not support teachers , we will risk the mental damage of students.”
61. Why did researchers test cortisol levels when studying students’ stress levels?
A. Because cortisol is the cause of stress.
B. Because cortisol levels are signs of stress levels.
C. Because cortisol is the killer of stress.
D. Because they needed to collect saliva samples.
62. Which statement is true according to Eva Oberle?
A. Students’ stress es before the teachers’.
B. She doesn’t know whether increased cortisol es first.
C. It’s certain that teachers’ stress influences cortisol levels.
D. The influence of teachers’stress is more powerful than that of students’.
63. What does the stressful classroom climate result in?
A. Poor management of students.
B. Negative support for teachers.
C. Students’ reduced stress.
D. Teachers’ reduced stress.
64. What does the underlined word “alleviate” mean?
A. Balance
B. recognize
C. Lead
D. Reduce
65. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Stress of teachers is the key reason for students’ stress.
B. Stress contagion might take place out of the classroom.
C. Stress might spread between students and teachers.
D. Stress contagion possibly takes place among students.
D
For more than a century it was thought that a beautiful face was appealing because it was a connection of average features. Using his puter system, Dr David Perrett of the University of St Andrews has challenged the theory. In a key experiment, photographs of women were ranked for their attractiveness by a number of volunteers. Two posite(合成的) pictures were then created; one, the average of all the pictures, the other made from those rated most attractive. Although the faces looked very similar at first sight, most people said they preferred the posite of most attractive faces.
“The conclusion I reached," said Dr Perrett “was that the most attractive face was not average. If you look at famous film stars and supermodels, you’ll see most of them have ideal features 一 larger than normal eyes, higher arched eyebrows, slightly smaller noses, and higher cheekbones. Even popular cartoon characters such as Betty Boop, and Bambi have big eyes, small turned-up noses, big mouths and small chins. And if these features are exaggerated, the attractiveness rating goes up even more. Julia Roberts is a good example of this."
But what do scientists make of men’s faces? Do men with large eyes, high cheekbones and a small chin have the same appeal? Researchers were a bit shocked at the top-ranking male face. They expected it to have the classic square jaw and strong cheekbones, but instead, women seem to prefer men with gentle faces.
Dr Perrett puts forward a reason to explain why so many women now go for baby-faced stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio and Jude Law. Women like a man with feminine (女性化的) face because he is more likely to make a kinder and more trustworthy husband and father.
But do these ideals of beauty manage to cross cultural boundaries? Are the same features considered to be attractive all over the world? A worldwide
study carried out by Professor Cunningham of the University of Louisville, Kentucky concluded that there were only very subtle differences between different cultures. In other words, although there might be a little truth in the old saying that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but generally speaking, we all seem to be attracted to the same things.
66. Dr Perrett reached his conclusion mainly by____________.
A. telling true stories
B. making parisons
C. setting down general rules
D. following the order of importance
67. According to Dr Perrett's theory, Julia Roberts is considered very____________.
A. appealing
B. intelligent
C. successful
D. trustworthy
68. Which of the following features of men is most attractive to women?
A. Square jaw.
B. Baby faces
C. Big mouths.
D. Strong cheekbones.
69. According to the author, people from different cultures______________.
A. seem to pay little attention to their differences
B. have pletely different views about beauty
C. have managed to cross cultural boundaries
D. seem to have the similar standard of beauty
70. What does the text mainly discuss?
A. Is beauty everywhere?
B. Is beauty only skin-deep?
C. Is beauty in the eye of the beholder?
D. Does beauty only belong to great women?

A group of high-school students from Italy have invented a vending machine(自动售货机) that sells smartphones cases made of used plastic bottles by a built-in 3D printer.
Saving the planet, making the world cleaner for future generations or just doing the right thing is a powerful argument for recycling---a vending machine
that eats up plastic trash and turns it into nice cases for a variety of popular smartphone models.
They were looking for an efficient way of getting the youth more involved in environment protection when they came up with the idea for the MyProAction device. It looks like a regular vending machine, only instead of money it accepts plastic bottles and gives smartphone cases in return.
The brilliant device breaks down the plastic waste into small balls which are then used by a built-in 3D printer to create various case designs. It’s not clear whether the cases are created on the spot, after someone puts in a certain amount of plastic, or if they can only select one of the pre-made cases.
I suspect it may be the latter, as the 3D making process can take a long time. Still, the concept is pretty cool for young people in schools and panies. So it meets with great favor from the youths. After all, getting a free phone case for a few empty plastic bottles is a pretty sweet deal.
The five students said that they had no idea whether their invention would ever bee a reality, but since it won a reward in a national contest, the brilliant vending machine has received worldwide interest. They currently have four types set up and are looking for a partner to get them mass-produced.
