Every April, I find myself troubled by the same concern—that spring might not occur this year. The landscape looks dull, with hills, sky and forest appearing gray. On May 3, I awoke to a green so amazing as to be almost electric, as if spring were simply a matter of pressing a switch. Hills, sky and forest revealed their purples, blues and green.
Then there was the old apple tree. It sits on an undeveloped lot in my neighborhood. It belongs to no one and therefore to everyone. The tree’s dark branches stretch out in unpruned (未经修剪的) abandon.
Until last year, I thought I was the only one aware of this tree. And then one day, in a bit of spring madness, I set out to prune (修剪) a few disorderly branches. No sooner had I arrived under the tree than neighbors opened their windows and stepped onto their porches (门廊). These were people I barely knew, but it was as if I had come uninvited into their personal gardens. My mobile-home neighbor was the first to speak. “You’re not going to cut it down, are you?” she asked anxiously.
Soon, half the neighborhood joined me under the apple tree. It struck me that I had lived there for five years and only now was learning these people’s names, what they did for a living and how they passed the winter. It was as if the old apple tree was gathering us under its branches for the purpose of both acquaintanceship and shared wonder.
Just the other day, I saw one neighbor at the local store. He remarked how this recent winter had been especially long and complained of not having seen or spoken at length to anyone in our neighborhood. And then, he looked at me and said, “We need to prune that
apple tree again.”
4.How did the author feel about the sudden change of the view?
A.Frightened.B.Depressed.C.Surprised.D.Annoyed. 5.Why did the neighbors open their windows and step out?
A.They intended to greet the author.
B.They felt astonished to notice a stranger.
C.They meant to protect their personal gardens.
D.They wondered what might happen to the tree.
6.What can be inferred about the apple tree in the neighborhood’?
A.It served as a bond.B.It was left unattended.
C.It stayed in a poor condition.D.It proved to be unappealing.
7.What did the neighbor value most according to the last paragraph?
A.The arrival of spring.B.The neighborhood gathering.
C.The pruning of the apple tree.D.Entertainment in the long winter.
Language is the bridge that connects people everywhere. On April 20, people around the world celebrated the United Nations Chinese Language Day. To mark the occasion, the UN Office at Geneva, Switzerland, organized the first Chinese Language Video Festival (CLVF).
Participants from 27 countries, including the US, the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Japan, took part in the one-hour special event, sharing their passion for the Chinese language and culture through short videos. Over 340 video submissions (提交) told touching stories about a civilized, modern and youthful China through participants’ personal experiences in the country.
Though some people find the language difficult to learn, most find it to be rewarding.
For M. Yousaf from Pakistan, learning Chinese gave him a better perspective (视角) and insight into the culture. “Learning Chinese is not just learning a language. It’s a language of one of the biggest populations in the world,” Yousaf said. “If you know this language, you know the civilization and mind of the people.”
Of course the language itself is unique, particularly considering it’s tonal (音调的) foundation. “Tones are important because a lot of Chinese syllables (音节) sound similar or even the same — the tone changes their meaning,” said Mike Fuksman, an American living in Beijing.
To remember Chinese characters, you can connect them with pictures and make some short stories. Many people find it is important to use imagination when learning Chinese. For example, the Chinese character for “tea” has some lines of grass, the roof of a house and people drinking tea.
Learning any language comes with benefits, particularly for those who are always looking to learn more. Since some languages have “loanwords (外来词)” from Chinese, it may be easier for one to pick up Korean or Japanese after studying Chinese. “It helped me so much when I started learning Japanese,” said Yerdana.
8.What is the function of Paragraph 3?
A.To tell the purpose of the festival.B.To summarize the above paragraphs. C.To introduce the following paragraphs.D.To explain the events of the celebration. 9.How can learners remember Chinese characters according to the passage?
A.Making notes.B.Practicing writing.C.Living in China.D.Using imagination.
10.What is the benefit of learning Chinese according to Yerdana?
A.Great help in learning Japanese.B.Good development of learning ability. C.A good understanding of the people.D.A better insight into the Chinese culture. 11.What is the text mainly about?
A.The method of learning Chinese.
B.How to write Chinese characters well.
C.The benefits of learning foreign cultures.
D.A new festival and some stories about learning Chinese.
This painting Spring Bouquet has a precise structure. The flowers spill over into the lower left-hand corner, with an imbalance as free and as wild as nature. But at once the artist responds to this unbalance. To the right of the vase, Renoir has developed a heavy shadow area, rich in purples and sharply contrasted with the light below it. The placing of the straight line in the lower right side is necessary. If the reader covers this line, he will see that the composition becomes unbalanced.
The Impressionist technique had not yet developed when Renoir painted this picture. Yet the painting with light and color indicates Impressionism is around the corner; there is something of that school in the feeling of the out-of-doors that Renoir has acquired. The
texture (纹理) of the flowers is described. Above all, one can’t help saying the very nice smell of the flowers is there, too.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir was born in 1841. He began working as a young painter of porcelain and textiles. At age 21, Renoir entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and went on to study under the instructions of painter Charles Gleyre’s. Even though his paintings had been initially rejected by the Academy and the public, with time he became one of the most admired artists of his generation.
Unfortunately, in 1899, he was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (风湿性关节炎). It is a disease that causes a lot of pain. In addition, the person affected by it may also have deformities (畸形). Consequently, his movements became very limited and each movement was a big and certainly painful effort.
His son, Jean Renoir, writes in the book Renoir, My Father after his father passed away, the reaction of the people to the painting of the father, after seeing his hands: Visitors who were unprepared for this could not take their eyes off his deformity. Though they did not dare to mention it, their reaction would be expressed by some such phrase as “It isn’t possible!” With hands like that, how can he paint those pictures? There’s some mystery somewhere.
12.What can readers see in the painting?
A.A vase in the left corner.B.A shadow to the vase’s right.
C.A straight line at the bottom.D.A natural light in the middle. 13.What seems quite special about this picture when people appreciate it?
A.The painting material.B.The color choice.
C.The smelly flower taste.D.The impressive feeling.
14.What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.Renoir, My Father.B.Spring Bouquet.
C.Rheumatoid arthritis.D.Renoir’s bravery.
15.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Patience Is a Lifetime Practice B.Pain Passes, but Beauty Remains C.Impressionism Is a Unique Technique D.Work hard, and You Will Catch Up

The Dog Who Saved Our Family
We met Max at the pickup area of Alaska Airlines five years ago. He was a standard poodle(狮子狗)born on V alentine’s Day in 2017,and came to us in a small blue box. We had adopted him from an out-of-state raiser who posted the news on the social network. Our only request was that he have a calm behavior, able to bear the pushing and hugging of our
eight-year-old daughter and six-year-old son.
We were a sweet little family:me,my husband, and our children, Sophie and Jake. But for years I’d felt as if we wouldn’t really be complete until we had a dog. Also, my husband worked in a business company and had to travel some 200 days a year for his job, and I knew I’d feel safer with a large animal sleeping by the door.
When we opened the box, the last piece of our puzzle fell into place. With his black hair and intelligent eyes,Max was beautiful. He was so small that he fit into the palm of my hand, his big paws lapping over the sides. He was also a little bit scared. As I pulled him close,I felt his heart pound and wondered if we’d done the right thing, taking him from his mother. But it was too late. Sophie and Jake were already fighting over who would hold him next and who should have the right to take a bath for him.
Over the following months, we spent endless hours watching Max play with his Kong toy or roll around the living room floor. Like most poodles, he was smart. He mastered
house-training quickly and never chewed on our furniture or shoes. He considered himself one of us.
