(2 points each , 30 points in all )Passage 1I'm beginning to wonder whether my grandmother isn't right when she complains, as she frequently does, that children nowadays aren't as well-mannered as they used to be. Whenever she gets the opportunity, she describes in detail how she used to be told to respect her elders and betters. She was taught to speak only when she was spoken to, and when she went out on her own, she was reminded to say "please" and "thank you". Children in her day, she continues, were expected to be seen and not heard, but these days you are lucky if you ever hear parents telling their children to mind their p's and q's.If you give her the chance she then takes out of her desk the old photograph album which she keeps there, and which she never tires of displaying. Of course when you look at pictures of her parents you feel sure that, with a father as hard-looking as that, you, too, would have been "seen and not heard". Beside him sits his wife, with their children around her: Granny and her elder brothers. It always occurs to me that perhaps those long, stiff, black clothes were very heavy to a little girl, that she hadn't enough breath left to talk, let alone bad. It must have been a dull and lonely life too, for she stayed mainly at home during her childhood, while her brothers were sent away to school from an early age. That said, my childhood was much freer than Granny's. I went to school with my brother, and I played football with him and his friends. We all spoke a common language and we got up to the same trouble. I would have died if I had had to stay indoors, wear a tight frock (女式礼服), and sew.36. How can we understand "children in her day were expected to be seen and not heard"? A. Children were not supposed to be heard by others.B. Children were not supposed to hear their parents' conversation.C. Children were not supposed to speak in the face of others.D. Children were not supposed to speak until asked to do it.37. What is the expression of "mind their p's and q's" supposed to mean?A. To mind their own business. B. To remember to say "please". C. To remember to say "thank you". D. To be well-mannered.38. Which of the following words can be used to describe Granny's feelings of her own childhood?A. Lonely. B. Dull. C. Proud. D. Happy.39. How did the author feel about her Granny's childhood?A. Disappointed.B. Unbearable.C. Respectable.D. Indifferent.40. Why did Granny often complain about modern children's behavior?A. She missed those good old days. B. She was too harsh on children. C. She didn't like kids who talk a lot. D. She was not open to new things.Passage 2Time spent in a bookshop can be most pleasant, whether you are a book-lover or merely there to buy a book as a present. You may even have entered the shop just to find shelter from a sudden shower. Whatever the reason, you can soon become totally unaware of your surroundings. You soon focus on some book or other, and usually it is only much later that you realize you have spent too much time there and must hurry off to keep some forgotten appointment. This opportunity to escape the realities of everyday life is the main attraction of a bookshop. A music shop is very much like a bookshop. You can range round such places to your heart's content. If it is a good shop, no assistant will approach you with the greeting, "Can I help you?" You needn't buy anything you don't want. In a bookshop an assistant should remain in the background until you have finished reading. Then, and only then, are his services necessary.Once a medical student had to read a textbook which was far too expensive for him to buy. He couldn't obtain it from the library and the only copy he could find was in a bookshop. Every afternoon, therefore, he would go to the shop and read a little of the book at a time. One day, however, he was disappointed to find the book missing from its usual place. He was about to leave, when he noticed the owner of the shop making a gesture to him with his hand. Expecting to be scolded, he went towards him. To his surprise, the owner pointed to the book which was put away in a corner. "I put it there in case anyone had a desire to buy it!" he said, and left the delighted student to continue his reading. 41. Time spent in a bookshop can be most pleasant _______________.A. only when you can find the book you want to buy B. only when you are a book-loverC. even when you enter it to avoid a sudden showerD. even when you know you are late for an appointment42. Our 100,000 students are currently studying at the Open University. We found limited development of distance learning in the case studies, with the exception of some postgraduate and professional courses. Even here, however, there seemed to be limits on further growth because of the high costs involved in setting up new distance learning courses, as well as uncertainties of demand (particularly in terms of the perceived financial returns on study). One of the case study universities provided video facilities and visiting staff to a rural area for a group of undergraduate students about 50 miles away. This was a new development which was working well and likely to be expanded to involve other universities. The main reason for general lack of development of distance learning, especially at the undergraduate level, may be that other universities have been unable to afford the considerable set-up costs and student support facilities. As costs of technology come down this might change. The Open Learning Foundation is developing connections between universities to set open learning approaches within existing programs of study and thus encourage their greater use. This is seen as likely to develop further in the future.46. The Open University provides an education for _________________.A. students who do not like attending regular universitiesB. students who failed the College Entrance ExaminationC. students who are adults and away from a universityD. students who are limited in their ability to learn47. Among other things, the further growth of distance learning at postgraduate and professional levels is limited by ____________________.A. the high costs involved B. a low student demand C. a lack of educationD. the poor rural technology48. The attempt of one case study university to provide equipment and staff to a rural group of students _________. A. would be expanded B. did not work well C. might help learning D. could cost a lot49. The cost of setting up a distance learning program might change ______________.A. as new developments are made B. as more students take classes there C. as the Open University helps more D. as technology becomes cheaper50. The tone of this passage can best be described as ________________. A. discouraging B. encouraging C. persuasive D. scientificIV Translate the following sentences into Chinese.(10 points in all )“We are slaves to nothing but the clock, ”it has been said. In the last forty years, business contacts between Japan and the West have become very important. Many foreign companies now have offices in Japan and Japanese businessmen do business around the world. Differences between Japanese and Western ways of doing business, however, often bewilder foreign businessmen and make doing business in Japan difficult for foreigners. The American businessman, for example, wants to start talking business immediately. He does not want to wait. The Japanese businessman, on the other hand, likes to arrive at decisions after giving them serious thought. Another thing foreign businessmen have difficulty in understanding is when a Japanese means "Yes" or "No". This is because of cultural differences between Japanese and Western society(社会), Which make it difficult for a Japanese to say "No" directly. In the USA, it is easy to say "No" to something one does not want to do. But in Japan, it is very difficult to say "No". To refuse an invitation or a request(请求) with "No" is felt to be impolite. It is thought to be selfish and unfriendly. So instead of saying "No" directly, the Japanese have developed many ways to avoid(避免) saying "No". These can help them avoid hurting other people's feelings. However, this often makes their ways of doing business rather difficult for foreigners to understand and follow.( ) 1. What often makes foreigners feel difficult to do business in Japan?A. Their different ways of doing business.B. Their different lifestyles.C. The fact that the Japanese never say "No".D. The fact that the Japanese are slow to take action.( ) 2. Americans usually say what they are thinking.D. Americans do not say what they think or feel clearly.( ) 4. From the passage we can infer(推断) that __________.A. Now I will talk about the differences between them. The first difference is in appearance. Going around in the U.S., I found that American youth do not really care about their appearance. In the morning, they choose something in their closet and wear it with another thing., often of different colors and styles, without wondering whether their choices make them look strange. The reason behind this is that they don’t care what people look like, but are just interested in their ideas. I think it’s great, but it also causes problems. Since they don’t care about their appearance, they don’t really care about their weight. Often they get fat without realizing it.I observed that there are differences in relationships too. When the American youth fall in love, they don’t really think of the future. Also, there are differences in the rules concerning behavior that is allowed. In some respects, the French are more accepting. For example, in America it is generally unacceptable to make physical display of love. Lovers, in theory, can’t kiss or hold each other everywhere they want. People think that not showing love in public places is a way to respect others. On the contrary, the French youth can do almost everything they want, and they are usually more concerned about the future of the relationship than the American youth. With regard to other types of relationships, there are also big differences. Americans act differently from French people in front of unknown people. When an American girl, for example, arrives in front of people she has never met before, she will talk with them, trying to create a kind of bond between her and this new circle of people. The French girls will just think about rather than really do this kind of thing because they are too shy and lacking in self-confidence.To finish, I noticed that in American classes, when pupils want to say or ask something, they just do it. In general, they don’t really care how the others will judge them. In France, it’s not the same case. If somebody wants to ask something, he/she will think about it before speaking up. I appreciate the freedom in Americans’behavior, ideas, and ways of expressing themselves.1.In this article, the author talks about_____ between American youth and French youth.A)the friendship B) the differences and similaritiesC) the similarities D) the differences2. American young people __________.A) are more concerned about appearanceB) show more interest in people’s ideasC) are just interested in people’s clothesD) care more about their weight3.American youth often____.A) wonder why they look strange B) care what people look likeC) neglect their weight D) cause problems with their ideas4.When American youth fall in love with each other, they_____.A) will kiss wherever they likeB) will always think about their futureC) will not hold each otherD) will rarely display their love in public5 If French pupils want to ask questions in class, they will_______.A) ask for the teacher’s permission firstB) speak up before the teacher permitsC) try to control themselves not to do soD) think about it before they do soKeys: DBCDDPassage 2Building Your Business, Building Your PeopleWhat an exciting thing to do ----developing a successful business ! I have been part of the building .And developing of four active , successful businesses. We are in a great stage of growth and development right now at my company, Progress Productions, and i am reminded every day of some of the most important ideas for progress. Here are five ideas to keep in mind that can make a significant difference in a team:Understand Your PeopleIf I want my team to go and grow with me, I need to find out what excites them. What are their personal drives and what keeps them form being at their best? What do they need in their work environment to improve their mental well-being? What are their fears and concerns,, and how can I help them manage these fears and concerns? What are their values and goals, and how can I ensure they are in agreement with mine? It is important to remember that all your careful planning, you goals, and your purposes will be useless if you need other people to help youmake them happen and those people do not have the same level of commitment to them as you.Help People Build Self--confidenceThis is a major discovery for me, During my early years in management. I realized the great power of expectations on performance. As I found, people largely lived up to my expectation of them. SO i learned that if u want to build my business through my people, I have to build their own belief in their capacity to achieve, This belief must be educated. Not to the point of any false belief about current performance, but with a real conviction about potential If I want to lift their achievement, i must help them lift their trust in themselves first.Give People Floors, Walls, but No CeilingsWhile we are growing, we usually want a level of security beneath us ,a floor or a foundation. Keep your people informed of your plans and your activities, so that they know where they stand . Allow them freedom of operation within defined and measurable frameworks, and let them know the sky is the limit for achievement, for recognition, and for reward.Teach people to Treasure RecognitionWherever I speak and give advice to people, they tell me they do not get enough recognition. Sad, is not it? I usually ask them how much recognition they give. They look at me as if i am crazy, but a good culture of recognition should be carefully developed, with praise and appreciation shown both up and down, and sideways, in a team. Find interesting ways to encourage everyone in your team to recognize achievement in others, but be careful to keep it genuine, spontaneous and both individual--and team--based. Teach your team to ask for the opinions of others if they are not receiving recognition the way they want it, and teach them they have the responsibility for creating it.Encourage People to Be CreativeEach one of us has created our life just the way we choose to have it, or at least the way we have settled for it . Those who have been told they are creative will probably use their creativity bravely. Others who have not had their creativity encouraged will mostly believe they are uncreative, I suggest you encourage your people to be creative and brave in trying out new ideas.Building a business is greatly rewarding and building your people is equally rewarding. Seeing your people develop as a result of your encouragement, advising, and management is a great joy!!!1 Form the first paragraph we know the authors present company is _________A, developing quicklyB. creating important ideasC. progressing productionsD. making a significant difference2 It is necessary to find out your team’s personal drives so that you _________A.can improve their mental well--beingB.Can help them manage their fearsC.Can keep them at their bestD.Can agree with their values and goals3 Careful planning, goals, and purposes will be useful only when_______A.your team members come to helpB.Your team members are resourcefulC.Your team members are interested in themD.Your team members are as committed to them as you4 If you help your employees believe in themselves, you can ______A.receive more educationB.Lift their achievementC.Get more trust from themD.Have more opportunities5 According to the author, an employer should______A.give his people the freedom to do whatever they likeB.Reward his people within defined frameworksC.Provide his people freedom of operation within measurable frameworksD.Tell his people the sky is the limit for operationKey: ACDBCPassage 3Computer VirusesThe computer virus is an outcome of the computer overgrowth in the 1980s. The term computer virus comes from the likeness between the viruses that harm the body and the harmful programs that infect computers. When inside a body, viruses create factories that breed other viruses. However, computer viruses are small programs. They reproduce by attaching a copy of themselves to another program.Once attached to another program, viruses then look for other programs to “infect”. In this way, the virus can spread quickly throughout a single computer or an entire network when it infects a LAN or a multi-user system. At some point, the virus attacks according to how it isprogrammed. The timing of the attack can be linked to a number of situations, such as a certain time or date, the presence of a particular object, the security level of the user, and the number of times a program is used. Similarly, the pattern of attack comes in different ways. The so-called “harmless”viruses might simply show a message, like the one that infected IBM’s main computer system in 1987 with Christmas greetings. Harmful viruses are designed to damage the system. They can wipe out data, cross out information, or rewrite the hard disk.Main Types of VirusesThere are four main types of viruses: shell, intrusive(侵扰的),operating system, and source code(源代码).Shell viruses wrap themselves around a host program, but don’t change it. Shell programs are easy to write, which is why about half of viruses are of this type.Intrusive viruses invade an existing program and actually place a part of them into the host program. Intrusive viruses are hard to write and very difficult to remove without damaging the host file.Shell and intrusive viruses usually attack executable program files --- those with a .com or .exe extension, although data files are also at risk.Operating system viruses work by replacing part of the operating system with their own code. They are very difficult to write and have the ability, once loaded, to take total control of your syste.Operating system viruses are intrusive programs that are inserted into a source program such as those written in Pascal prior to the program being followed. They are the least common viruses because they are not only hard to write, but also have a limited number of hosts compared with the other types.Be Cautious About the Second Network VirusesDo you believe it? Network viruses can steal money! And they are coming for your computer right now. So far the Internet has become the main channel through which computer viruses spread. Even without getting information from the network, your computer can be infected by the second network computer viruses, which are hidden in some machines on the network. The virus that can steal your money is a kind of the second network viruses. It was designed and inserted in some machines on the network. When your computer is linked to one of these machines, the virus will invade your hard disk and search whether Intuit Quicken, an accounting program, is installed. One of this accounting program’s functions is to transfer accounts automatically. Once the program is infected, your money will be transferred to an additional account opened by the virus program without anybody knowing it.1. Computer viruses are small programs, which _________A, are similar to the viruses that harm the human bodyB. invade a living cell and produce other virusesC. reproduce by attaching a copy of themselves to another programD. come into being during the computer overgrowth in the 1990s2. Viruses can infect other programs if only they are _________E.affected by another programF.spread throughout a computerG.attached to another programH.attacked by other programs3. People create viruses for the purpose of _______E.showing a messageF.damaging the systemG.delivering a season’s greetingH.linking some machines4. The four main types of viruses do not include ______E.intrusiveF.operating systemG.source codeH.hard disk5. About 50% of viruses are shell viruses, because shell viruses______E.reproduce fastF.invade an existing programG.are easy to writeH.have a host programKey: CCBDCPassage 4 Bright HeartLast Tuesday I was invited to participate in a party for Tuesday’s Children,an organization that helps children with the AIDS virus. I was asked to attend because I’m on a television show. I don’t think that most of the kids recognized me as a famous person, but as a big kid who came to play with them for the day. I think I liked it better that way.At the party, they had all kinds of activities. I was drawn to one in particular because all the children were taking part in it. In that activity, anyone who wanted toparticipate could paint a square. Later all the painted squares were going to be sewn together to make a wall hanging. The wall hanging would be presented to a man who had devoted much of his life to this organization and would soon be retiring. They gave everyone some paints in bright, beautiful colors and asked the kids to paint something that would make the wall hanging beautiful. As I looked around at all the squares, I saw pink hearts and bright blue clouds, beautiful orange sunrise, and green and purple flowers. The pictures were all bright, positive, and uplifting. All except for one.The boy sitting next to me was painting a heart, but it was dark, empty, and lifeless. It lacked the bright, lively colors that his fellow artists had used.At first I thought maybe he took the only paint that was left and it just happened to be dark. But when I asked him about it, he said his heart was that color because his heart felt dark and because he was very sick. He said that his sickness was not ever going to get better. He looked straight into my eyes and said, “There is nothing anyone can do that will help.”I told him I was sorry that he was sick and I could certainly understand why he was so sad. I could even understand why he had made his heart a dark color. But I also told him that it isn’t true that there is nothing anyone can do to help. Other people may not be able to make him better, but we can do things like sharing our time and our love, which in my experience can really help when people are feeling sad. I told him that if he liked, I would be happy to spend some time talking with him so that he could see what I meant. But instead of talking with me, he did something different. He instantly came near to me and wrapped his arms around my neck. When he did this, I thought my own heart would burst with the love for this sweet little boy.He sat there talking with me for a long time and when he had had enough, he jumped down to finish his coloring. I asked him if he felt any better and he said that he did, but he was still sick and nothing would change that. I told him I understood. I walked away feeling sad, but I determined that I would do whatever I could to help. As the day was coming to an end and I was getting ready to head home, I felt a slight pull on my jacket. I turned around and standing there with a smile on his face was the little boy. He said, “My heart is changing colors. It is getting brighter. I think love really does work.”On my way home I felt my own heart and realized it, too, had changed to a brighter color.1.From the first paragraph we know Tuesday’s Children is ___________A.a TV show for small kidsB. a party for small kidsC. a group for helping kids with AIDSD.an organization that author proposed2.What was the purpose of making the all hanging?A.The wall hanging would be given to a man as a gift.B.People will buy it so that more money can be raised for the kids.C.It was a special gift for the kids with AIDS.D.The author wanted it at the day of his retirement.3.Most of the children painted ___________ on the squares.A.white clouds and red sunrisesB.orange hearts and red flowersC.purple hearts and pink flowersD.blue clouds and green flowers4.The heart painted by a boy was very unusual because _________.A.it was bright and livelyB.it was dark and lifelessC.it was of lively colorsD.it was sad to look at5.Why did the boy choose the color?A.Because he thought it looked better.B.Because he happened to like the color.C.Because he felt sick and hopeless.D.Because he had no other colors to use.Key:C A D B CPassage 5Part III Translation1.She wouldn’t take a drink, _____________________(更别提留下来吃饭了。

For the remaining 3 questions in the same passage, complete the sentences with the information given in the passage.Questions 1 to 10 are based on the same passage or dialog. Building Solid FoundationsWhen it comes to the construction (建造) of a building, few people would argue about the importance of establishing a strong foundation. It's not different in building a business, a family, or a life.In 2000, we watched the failure of many Internet-based companies. One of the reasons for this is that these companies were built without solid foundations. A company needs more than just money and material to satisfy its basic needs; it also requires a firm base from which to build. The emphasis (重点) today is on instant satisfaction. But if we want to build something of value, something that will last, we must build a foundation that will support our goal. It takes effort and it takes conviction, but the rewards are worth it.Keep Your Eyes on What You're BuildingThere was once a man passing by a construction site. He stopped and asked one of the tradesmen what he was doing. The worker replied simply, "I'm laying bricks(砖), can't you see that?" The man watched a while longer and then asked another worker what he was doing. "I'm just earning a living," he replied. A third time the man asked a worker and the response was much different, "I'm building a beautiful church."No doubt the personal happiness and the quality of the work from the last man was much better than from the first two.And what about us? Are we just collecting a pay check, doing hard dull work — laying bricks? Or are we building churches?By staying focused on what we're building and seeing the task at hand as accomplishing that purpose, we'll gain greater satisfaction, our work will be lighter, and we'll create more excellence.Foundations Take TimeI recently watched a building being built. (I must admit I was tempted to ask some of the workers what they were doing.) For months, there seemed to be little progress. There was plenty of dust, lots of activity, but very few signs that anything was really happening. That's because they were building the foundation—the foundation to support a great structure. And that takes time. The engineers, the head builders, and the owner certainly weren't standing around saying, "Where's the building? Why can't I seemore progress?" They knew that a majority of the time to construct the building would be spent in laying the groundwork.Once the foundation is ready, the rest of the construction happens at fast speed. Even mistakes made in the superstructure (上层建筑) can be corrected without too much difficulty. But faults in the foundation CANNOT be easily repaired and will threaten the entire structure. And why should what we build be any different? We need to put strong foundations under our dreams, our businesses, and our relationships. I believe that this is where many people struggle. They're too focused on the rewards and don't give enough attention to the hard work and careful planning required in building the substructure (基础建筑). They want to start putting up walls and bringing in the business too soon. And in the end, most fail because there is not the right support.A strong foundation, built with good materials and a great deal of effort, will make your structure one that stands up to all attacks and fully supports your efforts.547 words)1.In creating something, it's important to ________________.A. have a strong foundationB. have the support of familyC. have few people to argueD. have a firm construction2.Many internet companies failed, because people thought________________.A. failing was impossibleB. having money and material was enoughC. satisfying themselves was basicD. having a firm base came first3.Our focus today is on ________________.A. supportive foundationsB. instant convictionC. immediate satisfactionD. worthwhile rewards4.Which of the men had personal happiness?________________A. Although Beethoven could sit down and compose easily, his really great compositions did not come easily at all. They cost him a great deal of hard work and he always found it hard to satisfy himself. When he was 28, he began to notice a strange noise in his ears. As it grew worse, he went to see doctors, and was told that he was going deaf. This was too much for any composer to bear. Beethoven was without hope; he was sure that he was going to die. He went to the countryside where he wrote a long good-bye letter to his brothers, describing how sad and lonely his deafnessmade him. He longed to die, and said to death, "Come when you will; I shall meet you bravely."In fact, Beethoven did something braver than dying. He gathered his courage and went on writing music, though he could hear what he wrote more and more faintly. He wrote the music for which we remember him best after he became deaf. This music was very different from any that had been composed before. Instead of the artistic and beautiful music that earlier composers had written for their rich listeners, Beethoven wrote stormy, exciting music which reminds us of his troubled and courageous (勇敢的) life. His Heroic (英雄的) Symphony (交响乐) and Fifth Symphony both show his courage in struggling with his fate.In time he went completely deaf, but he wrote more creatively than ever, for he could "hear" his music in his mind. He was lonely and often unhappy but in spite of this, he often wrote joyful music, such as his last symphony, the Ninth. Because of his courage and strong will to triumph, his music has given joy and encouragement to millions of people.1.How did Beethoven's deafness affect him?A. It killed him.B. Culture shock might be called an expected disease of people who have suddenly moved to some foreign countries. Like most diseases, it has its own symptoms and cure.Culture shock is started by the anxiety that results from losing all our familiar signs and sights of social activities. Those signs or cues (提示) include the thousand and one ways in which we find our place in the situation of daily life: when to shake hands and what to say when we meet people, when and how to give tips, how to make purchases, when to accept and when to refuse invitations, when to take statements seriously and when not. These cues, which may be words, gestures, expressions with the face, customs, or norms, are acquired by all of us in the course of growing up and are as much a part of our culture as the languagewe speak or the beliefs we accept. All of us depend for our peace of mind and our efficiency on hundreds of these cues, most of which we do not carry on the level of conscious awareness. Now when an individual enters a strange culture, all or most of these familiar cues are removed. He or she is like a fish out of water. No matter how broad-minded or full of goodwill you may be, a number of supports have been knocked out from under you followed by a feeling of frustration and anxiety. People respond to the frustration in much the same way. First they reject the environment which causes the discomfort. "The ways of the host country are bad because they make me feel bad." When foreigners in a strange land get together to complain about the host country and its people, you can be sure they are suffering from culture shock. Another stage of culture shock is regression. The home country suddenly assumes a great importance. To the foreigner everything becomes much greater than it really is. All the difficulties and problems are forgotten and only the good things back home are remembered. It usually takes a trip home to bring one back to reality.6.According to the passage, culture shock is_________________.A. an expected disease of foreign peopleB. may lead to very serious symptomsC. actually not a diseaseD. something that can't be changed7.According to the passage, culture shock results from________________.A. the sudden loss of our own signs and sights of socialactivitiesB. the sudden change of our daily habitsC. the sudden change of the social situation and customsD. the discomfort that we feel when faced with a foreigner8.Which one of the following may NOT be the symptoms ofculture shock?A. She is recalling old times as she waits for her family's arrival. The nursing home has been Melinda's new settlement ever since Thomas passed away a week ago. Thomas had fought a long and hard battle against lung cancer for three years. Unfortunately, he has broken the promise that he and Melinda had made: to be with each other for every birthday. Melinda knew this was unrealistic but agreed to the promise for Thomas’s sake.“Thomas, you are completely a dreamer!” Melinda shouted to Thomas as h e dragged on about living on an island with his beautiful wife. That s what she loved about him most—he had a vivid imagination. They got married at age eighteen and began having children right away. Mary came within the year, followed by Thomas Benjamin II, Lilly-Ann, and Joseph “Little Joey' George. The family lived an exultant life filled with laughter and love.“Mom!” Lilly shouted, but it really sounded like a howl. Melinda had lost herself in thinking about the life she had shared with her late husband. Lilly pushed her down the long dark halls of the nursing home until they arrived at the recreational room. When the doors opened, Melinda put her hand over her mouth and was completely speechless. The room was crowded with the people nearest and dearest to her and the warmth and love was felt instantly. The night went on; stories and cocktails were shared and everything was perfect. However, when Melinda caught a moment to herself she looked around at her family. With a smi le on her face, she raised her Manhattan and called out for a toast. “This one is for you, Thomas, though you are not here.”36. Why did Thomas break his promise?A. He was busy with his work.B. He died of lung cancer.C. He had to serve in the army.D. He stopped loving Melinda.37. Which of the following best explains “exultant” underlined in Paragraph 2?A. Peaceful.B. Simple.C. Stressful.D. Happy.38. What can we infer from the last paragraph?A. Melinda, children forgot their father.B. Melinda was tired of noise.C. Melinda missed her husband badly.D. Melinda liked to drink alcohol,39. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. A Particular BirthdayB. A Woman at a Nursing HomeC. Memories of Old DaysD. A Big Surprise for MelindaPassage BSpotify can tell if you’re sad. Here’s why that should scare you. Want to figure out if someone is a patient with a mental disability? Ask them what their favorite song is. A New York University study last year found that people who loved Eminem's Lose Yourself and Justin Bieber's What Do You Mean? were more likely to have trouble with mental disabilities than people who were into Dire Straits.Over the past few years,Spotify has been improving the ability to analyze information to help businessmen target consumers with advertisements made specially for their needs. They conclude this from the sort of music you’re listening to, combined with where and when you’re listening to it, along with third-party data that might be available. Now, to be clear, there’s nothing significantly illegal about what Spotify is doing with your information. I certainly don't think that they are working with shadowy consulting firms to serve you ads selling a culture struggle while you're listening to music that suggests you might be in a terrible situation. However, I find it disappointing that our personal, private moments with music are increasingly being turned into information points and offered to advertisers. You can see where this could go,can’t you? As ad targeting gets ever more accurate, businessmen will have the ability to target our feelings in potentially improper ways. According to one study, you are more likely to spend more on a product if you’re feeling sad. You can imagine some companies might take advantage of that. And on that note,I’m feeling a littledown about all this. Head off to treat myself to something expensive.40. What's the purpose of the first paragraph?A. To introduce a new song.B. To draw readers’ attention.C. To help more patients.D. To promote a new medium.41. Spotify improves its ability to analyze information to______.A. provide services for the governmentB. work with shadowy consulting firmsC. get listeners' personal informationD. help businessmen attract consumers42. What s th e author’s attitude towards Spo tify?A. Uncertain.B. Supportive.C. Positive.D. Dissatisfied.43. Who is the text probably designed for?A. Internet users.B. Officials.C. Researchers.D. Managers.Passage CAn exciting landing process of Chang'e-4 lunar probe (月球探测器)was seen through the monitor at Beijing Aerospace Control Center in Beijing,Jan. 3, 2019. It touched down on the far side of the moon at 10:26 a.m. Beijing Time, becoming the first spacecraft soft-landing on the moon’s unknown side nev er visible from Earth.China’s Chang'e-4 probe has started the exploration on the far side of the moon thanks to the relay satellite that provides a communication link with ground control. The relay satellite, named Queqiao, meaning Magpie Bridge, after a Chinese legend, was launched on May 21,2018,and became the first communication satellite operating in the halo orbit, nearly 500,000 km from the earth. It can also provide communication for probes from other countries. The relay satellite will also be used for scientific and technological experiments. The maximum distance between the satellite and the Chang'e-4 probe on the far side of the moon is 79,000 km. The satellite processes data from the probe and sends it to Earth. The satellite can stay in its orbit for a long time due to its relatively low fuel consumption, as the earth’s and moon's gravity balances its orbital moving. While in orbit, it can “see” both the earth and the far side of the moon. The concept of using a relay satellite in the halo orbit was first put forward by U.S. space expertsin the 1960s, but was realized by Chinese space engineers.Researchers hope to use the cameras on the satellite to record asteroids (小行星)hitting the far side of the moon. To control the cost of the Chang'c-4 probe, the relay satellite was designed to be relatively small, weighing about 400 kg.Researchers had just 30 months to develop the satellite, putting them under high pressure. To promote public interest in space exploration, the China National Space Administration invited people to write down their wishes for lunar and space exploration, and the relay satellite carries the names of tens of thousands of participants and their messages.44. What do we learn from the second paragraph?A. The relay satellite was launched on Jan. 3, 2019.B.Chang'e-4 probe was the first communication satellite.C. The relay satellite only explores the far side of the moon.D. The relay satellite can handle data from Chang'e-4 probe.45. Why was the size of the relay satellite relatively small?A. To reduce the cost as much as possible.B. To make it circle Moon for a longer time.C. To avoid being crashed by other satellites.D. To follow American space experts,advice.46. What made researchers suffer from great stress?A. Few people interested in the exploration on the moon.B. The relay satellite carrying too much equipment.C. Their lacking enough time to develop the relay satellite.D. People’s never being optimistic about the relay satellite47. What is the main idea of the text?A. China is a new space power after the USA.B.Change-4 probe lands on Moon’s far side.C. Chinese space engineers make much progress.D. Space exploration is a dangerous challenge.Passage DLast year marked the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. There were events around theworld in memory of those who died in the conflict. We have picked out three of them in European countries. Let's take a look.BelgiumIn a park, the famous Belgian artist Koen Vanmechelen had an exhibition called Coming World, Remember Me. The work consisted of 600,000 individual(单独的)clay sculptures, one for exhibition was a big egg made of clay each person killed during the World War. In the center of the exhibition was a big egg made of clay, symbolizing a new world.UKIn a small town called Aldridge. almost 100 houses in one street were covered with 24,000poppies and statues of sold. They stood for the men from the area who had been killed in the war. The flowers were chosen because of a poem written by the Canadian doctor John McCrea in1915. They made people think of fields of blood.FranceThe British artist Guy Denning arrived in La Feuille,a small town in the northwest of France, to stick life-size drawings of soldiers who never came back home. Armed with glue and a brush, Denning stuck his drawings carefully on walls. Before long 112 men, ma.nly young adults, were brought back to mind, if not to life.48. What do we know about Coming World. Remember Me?A. It's the name of an exhibition.B. It's a film about World War I.C. It's a work standing for peace.D. It's a sculpture made of clay.49. Why were poppies chosen to symbolize the dead soldiers?A. The British people preferred them.B. They showed the cruelty of war.C. A Canadian doctor suggested them.D. The fields were filled with them.50. How was the end of World War I marked in France?A. A memorial to the dead soldiers was built.B. 112 wounded soldiers in the war were helped.C. Drawings of some dead soldiers were put up.D. Young adults were encouraged to join the army.Part IV Skimming and Scanning (10%)Technology in education: Current trendsA)Computers and Internet connections are becoming widely available in schools and classrooms. In 1999, 99 percent of teachers in the United States had access to a computer in their schools, and 84 percent had one or more computers in their classrooms. At the same time, Internet connections were also widespread, with 95 percent of schools and 63 percent of classrooms having access. Worldwide, many countries are making the creation and diffusion of information and communications technology (ICT) an important priority. The use of technology to find educational resourcesB) In the past, teachers attempting a problem-based curriculum felt the need to limit problems to those for which they had expertise or the local library had resources. Now the World Wide Web brings a seemingly endless amount of information on almost any subject, and it is possible for students to choose topics based on personal interest rather than availability of resources.C) Internet research projects are gaining popularity. In the spring of 1998, 30 percent of teachers surveyed (and 70 percent of those with high-speed Internet connections) reported they had assigned Internet research tasks to their students during the school year. Use of the Internet to gather information for solving problems sometimes resembles a modern version of library research, in which students gather and synthesize information from published reports. Despite the fact that the task seems traditional, the characteristics of this new medium require special skills for students. The sheer volume of information allows students to study almost any topic, but also makes it more difficult to locate precisely the right information from among the thousands, or even millions, of sites. In addition, the ease of publishing materials on the Internet increases the likelihood that students will encounter inaccurate or biased information. As a result, students must learn new strategies for conducting searches and evaluating the information thatthey retrieve.D) Students carrying out scientific investigations can use the Internet to make observations and collect data. For example, the fourth and fifth graders in California collected insects and sent them to San Diego State University. Using two-way audio and video connecting the school and the university, scientists guided the students in using an electron microscope to examine their specimens. Technology has made it possible to collect data from places students could never visit. In recent projects, high school students explored the floor of the Monterey Bay by studying the video from remotely operated robots, and middle school students were given time to use the Hubble telescope. Students also use technology to collect data in their schools and communities. For example, using handheld computers outfitted with various types of probes (探测仪),students can monitor the water quality at various locations in nearby streams or lakes. By transmitting their individual readings to a laptop computer in a field laboratory they can quickly graph their data and visually compare readings. The use of technology to summarize and present findingsE) In the past, students memorized and used formulas and models created by others to solve problems. Students often used these formulas, especially in the early stages of learning, with little understanding. In the early 21st century computer tools provide the opportunity for students to construct and test their own models using tools such as spreadsheets (电子制表软件)or concept maps (概念图). This type of instruction deepens students' understanding of abstract concepts and allows these concepts to be taught at an earlier age.F) Once students have summarized their data and other information, they typically communicate their findings to others. Writing reports is still the most widespread use of ICT, with 61 percent of US teachers assigning students word-processing tasks. In addition to text, students also use computer-created graphics, videos, and animations to communicate their ideas.G) The teacher is not the only audience for students' presentations. Students frequently expect to present their work to and receive feedback from their peers and the world outside their classroom. Whether they are using presentation software to accompany a face-to也cepresentation or developing materials to put on the Web, the trend is for students to be able to communicate their work to a broad audience. This increases students' perception that problem-based learning is real work for real audiences. The use of technology for collaboration and distance educationH) There are many opportunities for individual students to use technology to enhance their learning. These include online courses that provide students in remote locations with opportunities for customized curriculum and advanced placement courses (先修课程). These courses are conducted entirely online and offer asynchronous (异步的)interaction among faculty and students. Because they allow students to participate anytime and from anywhere, online courses are becoming increasingly popular among postsecondary (高等教育)students whose job and personal commitments do not allow them to meet a regular class schedule.I) Opportunities for interaction with peers from other countries can also contribute to knowledge and understanding of other cultures. ICT makes this type of communication possible for anyone with Internet access. For example, the Kidlink project encourages students up to age 15 to use the Internet to build a global network of friends. Kidlink participants discuss issues ranging from how to make and keep friends to war and peace.J) Monitoring students' independent learning in these flexible environments will be supported by sophisticated new assessment technologies that will help teachers collect and analyze students' data and make instructional decisions. These tools will continually assess students' work and provide feedback to them and their teachers. Such assessment has the potential to make time-consuming standardized testing unnecessary and to personalize the curriculum for every student. Ubiquitous,well-integrated technology tools will bring educators closer to redefine the educational enterprise and provide customized, just-in-time solutions for the learning needs of students.____1 Students find it more difficult to locate the right information from among a large number of websites.____2 Teachers will use sophisticated new technologies to assess students' learning in flexible environments and make instructional decisions.____3 Collecting information from the Internet is similar to that in the library as students obtain published reports and process the information in both cases.____4 While teachers had to limit problems to those with resources in the process of teaching in the past, students nowadays can make their own interest-based choices because of a large amount of information available on many subjects.____5 Students of higher education prefer online courses to those given at fixed time and in fixed places due to their other businesses.____6 The Kidlink project encourages students up to 15 to make foreign friends and have discussions about a wide range of issues on the Internet.____7 Many countries around the world prioritize the creation and spread of ICT.____8 By means of two-way audio and video, scientists in San Diego State University instructed the fourth- and fifth-grade students in California to observe specimens with electronic devices. ____9 Face-to-face presentations accompanied by software indicate the trend that students can communicate their work with more people.____10 Because of computer tools, abstract concepts can be better understood by students and be taught at an earlier age.Part V Translation (10%)1. 孔子的许多思想,尤其是教育思想,对中国社会产生了深远的影响。

Melinda had lost herself in thinking about the life she had shared with her late husband.Lilly pushed her down the long dark halls of the nursing home until they arrived at the recreational room. When the doors opened,Melinda put her hand over her mouth and was completely speechless. The room was crowded with the people nearest and dearest to her and the warmth and love was feltinstantly. The night went on;stories and cocktails were shared and everything was perfect. However, when Melinda caught a moment to herself she looked around at her family. With a smi le on her face, she raised her Manhattan and called out for a toast.“This one is for you,Thomas, though you are not here.”36.Why did Thomas break his promise?A.He was busy with his work.B.He died of lung cancer.C.He had to serve in the army.D.He stopped loving Melinda.37.Which of the following best explains“exultant”underlined in Paragraph2?A.Peaceful.B.Simple.C.Stressful.D.Happy.38.What can we infer from the last paragraph?A.Melinda, children forgot their father.B.Melinda was tired of noise.C.Melinda missed her husband badly.D.Melinda liked to drink alcohol,39.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.A Particular BirthdayB.A Woman at a Nursing HomeC.Memories of Old DaysD.A Big Surprise for MelindaPassage BSpotify can tell if you’re sad. Here’s why that should scare you.Want to figure out if someone is a patient with a mental disability?Ask them what their favorite song is.A New York University study last year found that people who loved Eminem's Lose Yourself and Justin Bieber's What Do You Mean?were more likely to have trouble with mental disabilities than people who were into Dire Straits.Over the past few years,Spotify has been improving the ability to analyze information to help businessmen target consumers with advertisements made specially for their needs. They conclude this from the sort of music you’re listening to, combined with where and when you’re listening to it,along with third-party data that might be available. Now,to be clear, there’s nothing significantly illegal about what Spotify is doing with your information.I certainly don't think that they are working with shadowy consulting firms to serve you ads selling a culture struggle while you're listening to music that suggests you might be in a terrible situation. However,I find it disappointing that our personal, privatemoments with music are increasingly being turned into information points and offered to advertisers. You can see where this could go,can’t you?As ad targeting gets ever more accurate, businessmen will have the ability to target our feelings in potentially improper ways.According to one study, you are more likely to spend more on a product if you’re feeling sad.You can imagine some companies might take advantage of that. And on that note,I’m feeling a littledown about all this.Head off to treat myself to something expensive.40.What's the purpose of the first paragraph?A.To introduce a new song.B.To draw readers’attention.C.To help more patients.D.To promote a new medium.41.Spotify improves its ability to analyze information to______.A.provide services for the governmentB.work with shadowy consulting firmsC.get listeners'personal informationD.help businessmen attract consumers42.What s th e author’s attitude towards Spo tify?A.Uncertain.B.Supportive.C.Positive.D.Dissatisfied.43.Who is the text probably designed for?A.Internet users.B.Officials.C.Researchers.D.Managers.Passage CAn exciting landing process of Chang'e-4lunar probe(月球探测器)was seen through the monitor at Beijing Aerospace Control Center in Beijing,Jan.3,2019.It touched down on the far side of the moon at10:26 a.m.Beijing Time, becoming the first spacecraft soft-landing on the moon’s unknown side nev er visible from Earth.China’s Chang'e-4probe has started the exploration on the far side of the moon thanks to the relay satellite that provides a communication link with ground control. The relay satellite, named Queqiao, meaning Magpie Bridge, after a Chinese legend, was launched on May21,2018,and became the first communication satellite operating in the halo orbit,nearly500,000km from the earth. It can also provide communication for probes fromother countries. The relay satellite will also be used for scientific and technological experiments. The maximum distance between the satellite and the Chang'e-4probe on the far side of the moon is79,000km.The satellite processes data from the probe and sends it to Earth. The satellite can stay in its orbit for a long time due to its relatively low fuel consumption,as the earth’s and moon's gravity balances its orbital moving. While in orbit,it can“see”both the earth and the far side of the moon. The concept of using a relay satellite in the halo orbit was first put forward by U.S.space expertsin the1960s,but was realized by Chinese space engineers.Researchers hope to use the cameras on the satellite to record asteroids(小行星)hitting the far side of the moon.To control the cost of the Chang'c-4probe,the relay satellite was designed to be relatively small, weighing about400kg.Researchers had just30months to develop the satellite, putting them under high pressure. To promote public interest in spaceexploration, the China National Space Administration invited people to write down their wishes for lunar and space exploration, and the relay satellite carries the names of tens of thousands of participants and their messages.44.What do we learn from the second paragraph?A.The relay satellite was launched on Jan.3,2019.B.Chang'e-4probe was the first communication satellite.C.The relay satellite only explores the far side of the moon.D.The relay satellite can handle data from Chang'e-4probe.45.Why was the size of the relay satellite relatively small?A.To reduce the cost as much as possible.B.To make it circle Moon for a longer time.C.To avoid being crashed by other satellites.D.To follow American space experts,advice.46.What made researchers suffer from great stress?A.Few people interested in the exploration on the moon.B.The relay satellite carrying too much equipment.C.Their lacking enough time to develop the relay satellite.D.People’s never being optimistic about the relay satellite47.What is the main idea of the text?A.China is a new space power after the USA.B.Change-4probe lands on Moon’s far side.C.Chinese space engineers make much progress.D.Space exploration is a dangerous challenge.Passage DLast year marked the100th anniversary of the end of World War I.There were events around theworld in memory of those who died in the conflict. We have picked out three of them in European countries.Let's take a look.BelgiumIn a park, the with24,000poppies and statues of sold. They stood for the men from the area who had been killed in the war.The flowers were chosen because of a poem written by the Canadian doctor John McCrea in1915.They made people think offields of blood.FranceThe British artist Guy Denning arrived in La Feuille,a small town in the northwest of France,to stick life-size drawings of soldiers who never came back home.Armed with glue and a brush, Denning stuck his drawings carefully on walls. Before long112 men,ma.nly young adults, were brought back to mind,if not to life.48.What do we know about Coming World.Remember Me?A.It's the name of an exhibition.B.It's a film about World War I.C.It's a work standing for peace.D.It's a sculpture made of clay.49.Why were poppies chosen to symbolize the dead soldiers?A.The British people preferred them.B.They showed the cruelty of war.C.A Canadian doctor suggested them.D.The fields were filled with them.50.How was the end of World War I marked in France?A.A memorial to the dead soldiers was built.B.112wounded soldiers in the war were helped.C.Drawings of some dead soldiers were put up.D.Young adults were encouraged to join the army.Part IV Skimming and Scanning(10%)Technology in education:Current trendsA)Computers and Internet connections are becoming widelyavailable in schools and classrooms.In1999,99percent of teachers in the United States had access to a computer in their schools,and84percent had one or more computers in their classrooms. At the same time,Internet connections were also widespread,with95percent of schools and63percent of classrooms having access.Worldwide, many countries are making the creation and diffusion of information and communications technology(ICT)an important priority. The use of technology to find educational resourcesB)In the past, teachers attempting a problem-based curriculum felt the need to limit problems to those for which they had expertise or the local library had resources. Now the World Wide Web brings a seemingly endless amount of information on almost any subject, and it is possible for students to choose topics based on personal interest rather than availability of resources.C)Internet research projects are gaining popularity. In the spring of1998,30percent of teachers surveyed(and70percent of those with high-speed Internet connections)reported they had assigned Internet research tasks to their students duringthe school e of the Internet to gather information for solving problems sometimes resembles a modern version of library research,in which students gather and synthesize information from published reports.Despite the fact that the task seems traditional, the characteristics of this new medium require special skills for students. The sheer volume of information allows students to study almost any topic, but also makes it more difficult to locate precisely the right information from among the thousands,or even millions,of sites. In addition, the ease of publishing materials on the Internet increases the likelihood that students will encounter inaccurate or biased information. As a result, students must learn new strategies for conducting searches and evaluating the information thatthey retrieve.D)Students carrying out scientific investigations can use the Internet to make observations and collect data. For example, the fourth and fifth graders in California collected insects and sent them to San Diego State ing two-way audio and video connecting the school and the university, scientists guided the students in using an electron microscope to examinetheir specimens.Technology has made it possible to collect data from places students could never visit. In recent projects, high school students explored the floor of the Monterey Bay by studying the video from remotely operated robots, and middle school students were given time to use the Hubble telescope. Students also use technology to collect data in their schools and communities. For example, using handheld computers outfitted with various types of probes(探测仪),students can monitor the water quality at various locations in nearby streams or lakes.By transmitting their individual readings to a laptop computer in a field laboratory they can quickly graph their data and visually compare readings. The use of technology to summarize and present findingsE)In the past, students memorized and used formulas and models created by others to solve problems.Students often used these formulas, especially in the early stages of learning, with little understanding. In the early21st century computer tools provide the opportunity for students to construct and test their own models using tools such as spreadsheets(电子制表软件)or concept maps(概念图).This type of instruction deepens students'understanding of abstract concepts and allows theseconcepts to be taught at an earlier age.F)Once students have summarized their data and other information, they typically communicate their findings to others.Writing reports is still the most widespread use of ICT, with61percent of US teachers assigning students word-processing tasks. In addition to text, students also use computer-created graphics, videos, and animations to communicate their ideas.G)The teacher is not the only audience for students' presentations.Students frequently expect to present their work to and receive feedback from their peers and the world outside their classroom.Whether they are using presentation software to accompany a face-to也cepresentation or developing materials to put on the Web,the trend is for students to be able to communicate their work to a broad audience. This increases students'perception that problem-based learning is real work for real audiences. The use of technology for collaboration and distance educationH)There are many opportunities for individual students to use technology to enhance their learning. These include online courses that provide students in remote locations with opportunities for customized curriculum and advanced placement courses(先修课程).These courses are conducted entirely online and offer asynchronous(异步的)interaction among faculty and students.Because they allow students to participate anytime and from anywhere, online courses are becoming increasingly popular among postsecondary(高等教育)students whose job and personal commitments do not allow them to meet a regular class schedule.I)Opportunities for interaction with peers from other countries can also contribute to knowledge and understanding of other cultures.ICT makes this type of communication possible for anyone with Internet access. For example, the Kidlink project encourages students up to age15to use the Internet to build a global network of friends.Kidlink participants discuss issues ranging from how to make and keep friends to war and peace.J)Monitoring students'independent learning in these flexible environments will be supported by sophisticated new assessmenttechnologies that will help teachers collect and analyze students'data and make instructional decisions. These tools will continually assess students'work and provide feedback to them and their teachers.Such assessment has the potential to make time-consuming standardized testing unnecessary and to personalize the curriculum for every student.Ubiquitous,well-integrated technology tools will bring educators closer to redefine the educational enterprise and provide customized, just-in-time solutions for the learning needs of students. ____1Students find it more difficult to locate the right information from among a large number of websites.____2Teachers will use sophisticated new technologies to assess students'learning in flexible environments and make instructional decisions.____3Collecting information from the Internet is similar to that in the library as students obtain published reports and process the information in both cases.____4While teachers had to limit problems to those with resources in the process of teaching in the past, students nowadays can make their own interest-based choices because ofa large amount of information available on many subjects.____5Students of higher education prefer online courses to those given at fixed time and in fixed places due to their other businesses.____6The Kidlink project encourages students up to15to make foreign friends and have discussions about a wide range of issues on the Internet.____7Many countries around the world prioritize the creation and spread of ICT.____8By means of two-way audio and video, scientists in San Diego State University instructed the fourth-and fifth-grade students in California to observe specimens with electronic devices.____9Face-to-face presentations accompanied by software indicate the trend that students can communicate their work with more people.____10Because of computer tools, abstract concepts can be better understood by students and be taught at an earlier age.Part V Translation(10%)1.孔子的许多思想,尤其是教育思想,对中国社会产生了深远的影响。

2011——2012学年度第二学期《新视野大学英语》课程期末考试(A)卷Part I Skimming and Scanning(1’×10=10’)Caught in the WebA few months ago, it wasn't unusual for 47-year-old Carla Toebe to spend 15 hours per day online. She'd wake up early, turn on her laptop and chat on Internet dating sites and instant-messaging programs – leaving her bed for only brief intervals. Her household bills piled up, along with the dishes and dirty laundry, but it took near-constant complaints from her four daughters before she realized she had a problem."I was starting to feel like my whole world was falling apart –kind of slipping into a depression," said Carla. "I knew that if I didn't get off the dating sites, I'd just keep going," detaching (使脱离) herself further from the outside world.Toebe's conclusion: She felt like she was "addicted" to the Internet. She's not alone.Concern about excessive Internet use isn't new. As far back as 1995, articles in medical journals and the establishment of a Pennsylvania treatment center for overusers generated interest in the subject. There's still no consensus on how much time online constitutes too much or whether addiction is possible. But as reliance on the Web grows, there are signs that the question is getting more serious attention: Last month, a study published in CNS Spectrums claimed to be the first large-scale look at excessive Internet use. The American Psychiatric Association may consider listing Internet addiction in the next edition of its diagnostic manual. And scores of online discussion boards have popped up on which people discuss negative experiences tied to too much time on the Web."There's no question that there're people who're seriously in trouble because they're overdoing their Internet involvement," said psychiatrist (精神科医生) Ivan Goldberg. Goldberg calls the problem a disorder rather than a true addiction.Jonathan Bishop, a researcher in Wales specializing in online communities, is more skeptical. "The Internet is an environment," he said. "You can't be addicted to the environment." Bishop describes the problem as simply a matter of priorities, which can be solved by encouraging people to prioritize other life goals and plans in place of time spent online. The new CNS Spectrums study was based on results of a nationwide telephone survey of more than 2,500 adults. Like the 2005 survey, this one was conducted by Stanford University researchers.About6% of respondents reported that "their relationships suffered because of excessive Internet use." About 9% attempted to conceal "nonessential Internet use," and nearly 4% reported feeling "preoccupied by the Internet when offline."About 8% said they used the Internet as a way to escape problems, and almost 14% reported they "found it hard to stay away from the Internet for several days at a time."The Internet problem is still in its infancy," said Elias Aboujaoude, a Stanford professor. No single online activity is to blame for excessive use, he said. "They're online in chat rooms, checking e-mail, or writing blogs. The problem is not limited to porn (色情) or gambling" websites.Excessive Internet use should be defined not by the number of hours spent online but "in terms of losses," said Maressa Orzack, a Harvard University professor. "If it's a loss [where] you're not getting to work, and family relationships are breaking down as a result, then it's too much."Since the early 1990s, several clinics have been established in the U. S. to treat heavy Internet users. They include the Center for Internet Addiction Recovery and the Center for Internet Behavior. The website for Orzack's center lists the following among the psychological symptoms of computer addiction:●Having a sense of well-being (幸福) or excitement while at the computer.●Longing for more and more time at the computer.●Neglect of family and friends.●Feeling empty, depressed or irritable when not at the computer.●Lying to employers and family about activities.●Inability to stop the activity.●Problems with school or job.Physical symptoms listed include dry eyes, backaches, skipping meals, poor personal hygiene (卫生) and sleep disturbances.People who struggle with excessive Internet use maybe depressed or have other mood disorders, Orzack said. When she discusses Internet habits with her patients, they often report that being online offers a "sense of belonging, and escape, excitement and fun," she said. "Some people say relief…because they find themselves so relaxed."Some parts of the Internet seem to draw people in more than others. Internet gamers spend countless hours competing in games against people from all over the world. One such game, called World of Warcraft, is cited on many sites by posters complaining of a "gaming addiction."Andrew Heidrich, an education network administrator from Sacramento, plays World of Warcraft for about two to four hours every other night, but that's nothing compared with the 40 to 60 hours a week he spent playing online games when he was in college. He cut back only after a full-scale family intervention (干预), in which relatives told him he'd gained weight."There's this whole culture of competition that sucks people in" with online gaming, said Heidrich, now a father of two. "People do it at the expense of everything that was a constant in their lives." Heidrich now visits websites that discuss gaming addiction regularly "to remind myself to keep my love for online games in check."Toebe also regularly visits a site where posters discuss Internet overuse. In August, when she first realized she had a problem, she posted a message on a Yahoo Internet addiction group with the subject line: "I have an Internet Addiction.""I'm self-employed and need the Internet for my work, but I'm failing to accomplish my work,to take care of my home, to give attention to my children," she wrote in a message sent to the group."I have no money or insurance to get professional help; I can't even pay my mortgage (抵押贷款) and face losing everything."Since then, Toebe said, she has kept her promise to herself to cut back on her Internet use. "I have a boyfriend now, and I'm not interested in online dating," she said by phone last week. "It's a lot better now."1. It is accurate to say that each of us has our own concept of success to the extent that each of us is responsible for setting our own goals and determining whether we have met these goals satisfactorily. Because each of us possesses unique differences in genetic ability and favorable environments in which to express these abilities, it is necessarily true that we must define success broadly. For some people, simply being able to live their life with a minimum of misery and suffering is considered a success. Think of the peace of mind of the poor shepherd who tends his sheep, enjoys his frugal life with his family in the beauty of nature, and who is respected because he does a good job of achieving the goals expected of and accepted by his and his society. On the other hand, it seems that even though some people appear to be rich in material possessions, many of them seem to be miserable and consider themselves unsuccessful when judged by their own standards of success. Because not all ventures can be successful, one should not set unrealistic goals for achieving success, but if one has self-confidence it would be unfortunate to set one’s goals at too low a level of achievement.A wise counselor once said to a young man who was experiencing frustration with his own professional success: "You do not have to set your goal to reach the moon in order to have success in traveling. Sometimes one can be very successful merely by taking a walk in the park or riding the subway downtown," The counselor added, " You have not really failed and spoiled your chances for success until you have been unsuccessful at something you really like, and to which you have given you best effort."56. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong or weak subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. Knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.Y our school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. Y ou may be good at metal work or cookery(烹饪术)and look for a job where you can improve these skills. If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think about what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned to how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. Y ou may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. Y ou may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is bitter to face any weaknesses than to pretend they do not exist.
