The car was invented over 100 years ago. You may know all kinds of cars’ names, but many people don’t know who was the inventor of the first car. The first car was invented not by a German, but by an American. His name was Henry Ford.
Henry was born in a poor family. He was the oldest of six children. When he was a boy, he became interested in repairing watches and machines. When he was twelve years old, his mother died. Soon he had to work for two dollars and fifty cents a week. In the evening he repaired watches for another dollar a week. The hard life made him strong and able.

Deborah Ahenkorah comes from Ghana, a country in West Africa. She has loved to read since she was a little girl. But all the books she read when she was little were American books and they showed a world that was different from hers. When Ahenkorah grew up, she started Golden Baobab. It is an organization that provides African children with books written by African people.
Golden Baobab does this in several different ways. First, it organizes programs and workshops. These workshops support African writers. In these workshops writers can learn new things and improve their writing. Second, Golden Baobab connects writers to publishers. Finally, it offers the Golden Baobab Prize. Any writer who is an African citizen can compete for the prize, and each story must happen in Africa.
“Children need books they can relate to. When they see characters who are like themselves in a story, they know that their experiences are important,” said Tiffany Morris, who works for Golden Baobab.
“We could have an industry of books, games, toys and characters that come from stories that are made just for African children,” Ahenkorah said.This is a big dream and also a big challenge. But Ahenkorah and Golden Baobab are working to make it come true.

If you think the place where you live is the coldest, then a visit to Oymyakon may change your mind.
Oymyakon is a small village in Siberia(西伯利亚) where the temperature can be as low as -67.78℃. It’s the coldest inhabited(有居民的) place on earth. The average winter temperature is around -50℃and only about 500 people live there.
Photographer Amos Chapple from New Zealand took a two-day trip to Oymyakon and quickly learned how terrible the sudden dropping of temperature could be.
“I was wearing thin trousers when I first got there. It was about -47℃. It seems the cold was strongly gripping(紧抓) my legs,” said Amos Chapple.
He said that the local people lived on meat and fish because the crops were unable to live in the freezing temperatures.
Mobile phones and cars are often in danger of freezing over. If cars aren’t running outside, they must be kept in a warm place.
Often it is dark and lonely outdoors, with only three hours of light in winter. However, in summer the village will have 21 hours of light and temperatures can rise to an average of 22.78℃in July.
