每小题2分,共30分)
A
Dear Managing Director,
As you know, money was recently received for improvements to the café, and the Board (董事会) has made some suggestions about how to spend it. The purpose of this letter is to show the reaction of the staff (全体员工) to your ideas and to present some suggestions of our own.
As we understand it, the Board has three main suggestions:
• to repaint the walls and hang curtains
• to buy longer tables and more chairs
• to brighten up the café with plants
We are very happy with the idea of repainting and curtains. This would certainly make the café more attractive. However, we do not feel that there is any need for new tables and chairs. The present furniture is in good condition and because the tables are small, they encourage a friendlier feeling than long tables would. As for plants, we feel the money could be better spent on other things. Our suggestions are:
• to buy a new dishwashing machine. The present machine is of poor quality and doesn’t always clean the dishes well.
• to buy a new coffee machine. The present machine breaks down very often and takes a long time to get repaired.
Also, would it be possible to change our servicing company?
• to buy more salt and pepper sets so we have one for every table.
• to buy new staff uniforms (制服). The present uniforms are uncomfortable and unattractive.
We hope that our suggestions will be given serious consideration, particularly those related to the two machines.
We look forward to discussing them with you at a convenient (方便的) time.

When planning a vacation, many people consider the popular tourist sites they want to visit. But that’s not what my husband and I did when we planned our vacation to Japan. We thought about the kind of farm we wanted to visit.
Ours was far from a typical (典型的) vacation. We were WWOOFing! WWOOF stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms. The organization connects people interested in organic farming. Volunteers, known as WWOOFers, help their hosts with daily activities. These include everything from baking bread to picking vegetables. Hosts provide volunteers with food and provide a place for them to stay.
My husband and I certainly felt like family when our host met us at the train station. She told us to call her Okasan — Mom. Likewise, we called her husband Otosan — Dad. Okasan and Otosan own an organic vegetable farm that tries to provide the local people with fresh, healthy food. When no WWOOFers are around to help, the farm work is done only by Otosan and Okasan. As part of the family, we were able to enjoy the fruits of our labor at every meal. Eating fresh vegetables three times a day combined with six hours of farm work, certainly did our bodies good. We planted vegetables and cleared rocks from fields. We also packed the vegetables so they could be sold at the market.
Perhaps the most challenging thing we did was weeding a rice field. It was quite challenging because the leaves and roots of the weeds look very similar to the rice. It’s not until both plants are mature (成熟的) that you can clearly tell them apart — only one produces rice.
WWOOFing is unlike anything I’ve ever done before, and I can’t wait to do it again! Let’s WWOOF!
()4. What do we know about WWOOF?
A. It belongs to a Japanese farm.
B. It helps the poor do farm work.
C. It provides tourists with hotels.
D. It is an organization connected with farming. ()5. What can we infer from Paragraph 3 about Okasan and Otosan’s farm?
A. It benefits both the locals and WWOOFers.
B. It attracts many visitors every day.
C. It provides free food for the locals.
D. It is supported by the government.
()6. What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The method of producing rice.
B. The hard time of the farm family.
C. The difficulties in weeding a rice field.
D. The most challenging thing for WWOOF. ()7. The author would most likely describe her WWOOFing as _____.
A. satisfying
B. worrying
C. boring
D. tiring

The famous website known as Facebook began as a Harvard University dropout's hobby. It was once limited to university students, but it has now become the largest social networking website in the world. It is a good way for old friends to find each other and for new friends to meet.
Facebook was started in 2004 and was then a site that only students with an email address ending in “edu” could join. It was like being part of a huge but exclusive club. College students throughout the USA joined the website to create large networks. As Facebook's popularity grew, its founder, Mark Zuckerberg, realized even more people would love to sign up for the service. In 2006, Facebook opened its membership to anyone with an email address. Facebook experienced another increase in its popularity.
In just minutes, anyone can sign up for the service and start enjoying photos or videos. Most new members also enjoy searching for friends they lost touch with years ago. Whether they knew each other from elementary, middle, high school or college, people around the world reconnect using Facebook's simple tools.
Facebook also includes many specialized features. Members write on a friend's “wall”, a special part of each person's page. Friends post short public messages on each other's “walls”, or they can send private (私密的) “messages”. Facebook members also “poke (戳)” each other. Sending a “poke” to a friend is like saying “I'm thinking of you”. Like a real-life poke, a “poke” on Facebook shows you want someone's attention. Members also send “gifts”. “Gifts” are little
icons (图标) of things you might really give. Members can buy these icons at a low price and send them, showing their appreciation.
()8. What does the underlined word “exclusive” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Available only to some people.
B. Teaching you something modern.
C. Strange and difficult to understand.
D. Supporting new ideas and methods.
()9. How did Mark Zuckerberg increase Facebook's popularity?
A. By advertising it online.
B. By working with schools.
C. By making it open to any email user.
D. By sharing students' photos and videos. ()10. Paragraph 3 mainly talks about _____.
A. some ways of using Facebook's tools
B. what people can learn from Facebook
C. how people make friends on Facebook
D. some features that make Facebook popular
()11. If a Facebook member wants to get noticed by a friend, he can _____.
A. send a “gift”
B. send a “poke”
C. write on the “wall”
D. send long “messages”

Teachers are having lessons in how to read children’s body language and change their own to deal with bad behaviour in the classroom.
Thousands have been trained to watch pupils’ gestures, mannerisms, facial expressions and speech, in order to know what they are thinking and how they feel.
Teachers are encouraged to copy a child’s gestures to give them a message tha t the teacher understands them.
If a child is talking with his left hand touching his chin (下巴), teachers should stand and hold their left hand to their chin, for example. Teachers should also cross their legs if a student does while he’s speaking.
The training is part of a set of exercises called Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), which is designed to improve communication and behaviour.
More than 1,200 teachers in England have received training in NLP. Hundreds of schools also pay thousands of pounds for the training.
NLP was developed in the 1970s at the University of California in the U.S. Its methods have been employed in a variety of fields, including sales, marketing, and management. In the UK, at least 50 companies now offer courses in NLP, many aimed at (以……为目标) teachers.
Dave Vizard, author of Meeting the Needs of Disaffected Students, said the technique was a new way to deal with poor behaviour in the classroom.
“Matching body language means looking at the world through the young persons’ eyes,” h e said.
However, some people say that NLP is just another educational fashion that takes teachers’ attention away from good teaching.
Frank Furedi, a sociology professor at Kent University, says, “Every few years there’s a big idea that becomes the theme (主题) in education.
“We’ve had raising self-respect, multiple intelligence, well-being and happiness, and the latest is NLP.
“They are tricks and are then replaced with the next big thing.”
()12. Which may be a main purpose of the lessons?
A. Making studies more enjoyable.
B. Improving classroom management.
C. Helping pupils know about themselves.
D. Teaching students about body language.
()13. What should teachers do if a schoolboy moves his head to the side?
A. Tell him to stand up straight.
B. Make the same movement.
C. Touch their chin.
D. Cross their legs.
()14. What was Vizard’s attitude to NLP?
A. Afraid.
B. Doubtful.
C. Supportive.
D. Uncaring.
()15. What does Furedi say about NLP?
A. It won’t stay po pular for long.
B. It is a great educational idea.
C. It helps teachers in many ways.
D. It goes against a lot of old ideas.

A few years later, Ian Bishop, another West Indian cricketer, came to play for us and he was even quicker. Facing those two when I was a kid helped me become a good cricketer. You learn so much from being around adults.

If you're someone in the center of public attention, there're two “you” —the “you” that everyone else sees and the actual “you”. Every morning, I go for a five-mile bike ride with my dog. It's a great way to start the day and exercise the dog. 19
Be more positive (乐观的).
Yes, there are lots of bad things going on. But the world is also a great place. I'd tell people to stop complaining (抱怨) about their situation and look at what they've got. 20 If you accept that life isn't always going to be rosy, then it's easier to deal with it.
