A tutor can help improve your child’s grades and keep his focus. But this will only be possible if you can find the tutor that can suit your child’s character and l earning style. Before you hire a tutor, ask yourself these three important questions:
1. Is the tutor friendly and easy to talk to?
One of the most common problems for a student is the “fear” of the subject and the subject teacher. Fear keeps your child from focusing on the subject. So you need to look for a tutor who can ease these fears and improve the student’s interest. Choose someone friendly so that your child won’t consider learning as being punished or laughed at..
2. Is the tutor able to teach the subject matter?
There are tutors who are excellent at a certain subject matter but may not have the ability to
teach it. Some have the knack for teaching and they can explain tough concepts without intimidating(胁迫) their students.
But for most people, the ability to teach is something that needs to be developed for several years. And this can only be possible if the teacher has years of teaching experience. The best tutors are the ones who have enough knowledge and can make learning quick and fun.
Should I consider using an online tutor?
This is one choice that you might want to consider if you want a more flexible learning schedule for your child. You can select an online tutor from famous companies that employ top tutors who can help your child anytime. This will also fit in with your busy schedule as you can always monitor your child’s progress by simply checking it online using your phone of computer.
21. When you want to improve your child’s grades, it is the most important to ____.

Children who frequently move house are more likely to suffer poor health, research suggests. Moving several times before the age of 18 can affect the health, psychological distress and increase the chance that a child may use illegal drugs.
The study included data for 850 people, followed-up for a period of 20 years. Scientists found changing accommodation several times could cause psychological distress in children.
By the age of 18, 59 percent had moved house once or twice while one in five had moved at least three times. Some 20 percent had stayed in the same house during their childhood.
Children of single parents or those with step-parents were more likely to move home, as were those with two or three brothers and sisters. Those with four or more brothers and sisters were more likely to stay in the same house.
Experts found that people who moved at least once had an increased risk of poorer health, and some of this could be down to changing schools. Those who had moved three times or more were twice as likely to have used illegal drugs and nearly three times as likely to have had suicidal thoughts as those who stayed in the same house.
Lead author Dr Denise Brown, from the Social and Public Health Sciences Unit in Glasgow, said: “For many people, moving house is a positive experience as it may lead to improved family circumstances. But for some family members, especially children, moving can be bad and may lead to poor health outcomes and behaviors in adulthood. The negative effect on health in adulthood appears to be somewhat accounted for by a high number of school moves.”

A. Psychological distress.
B. Using illegal drugs.
C. Moving house often
D. Not staying with parents.
25. In the study some 20 percent of the children probably _____.

Reggie couldn't hear a thing. He was a normal boy, but he had been born deaf. He was well known to everyone in town, and they were all very fond of him. Unfortunately, though, he always seemed to end up being treated differently from everyone else. Children worried that they would hurt him, that maybe he wouldn't hear the ball being hit in his direction. Adults acted like he was incapable of understanding them, as though he was some kind of baby.
Reggie didn't like this very much. But the person who disliked it the most was his friend Michael, who dec ided one day that things had to change. Michael's father was the town’s Mayor, and Michael managed to convince him that this year, in honour of Reggie, they should dedicate one day of the festival to deaf people. During that whole day everyone in town would have to wear earplugs(耳塞).
People liked the idea, because everyone loved Reggie. The day became known as The Day of Silence, and when it arrived everyone stuck plugs in their ears, in a spirit of great fun. That morning was filled with practical jokes, mischief and laughter. But, as the hours passed, people became more and more aware of how difficult life was when you couldn't hear anything. However, learning about how life was more difficult for the deaf was nothing compared to the greatest discovery of the day: Reggie was amazing!
On that day no one was thinking of Reggie as just a deaf person. This meant he could be treated just like any other little boy; and people saw a whole new side of him. Not only that, but Reggie had a bright and sharp mind. On that day, using his usual gestures, Reggie was the one who could communicate best with everyone. This meant that people paid more attention to what he was saying, and they were surprised by his intelligence, his creativity, and his ability to find solutions to almost any problem. They realised that he had always been like that, and that in normal life all Reggie needed was a little more time than others to communicate. That was the only difference.
28.Who disliked Reggie’s being treated differently the most?
A. Reggie
B. Michael
C. Michael ’s father
D. Everyone
29. Which of the following is NOT true on The Day of Silence ?
A. Adults treated Reggie as a baby
B. Everyone in town wore earplugs
C. People played jokes in the morning
D. People became aware of difficulty of the deaf
30. The most important finding on The Day of Silence was that ____.
A .life was more different for the deaf B. Reggie needed help
C. Reggie was amazing
D. hearing was important
31. The purpose of the passage is ____.
A. to explain why Reggie was deaf
B. to show the deaf should not be treated differently
C. to introduce the beginning of The Day of Silence
D. to explain why Reggie was amazing
D
Earthquake prediction research has been going on for nearly a century but successful earthquake predictions are extremely rare.
In spite of so much research and wonderful equipment, it is impossible to predict an earthquake accurately, although experts can estimate roughly an earthquake coming in a particular region. Approximately 1,000 earthquakes measuring 5.0 and above occur yearly. Earthquakes of the greatest intensity(强度) happen about once a year and major earthquakes (7.0-7.9) occur about 18 times a year. Most earthquakes are not even noticed by the general public, since they happen either under the ocean or in areas where there are no people living. Please read on for some tips about how to stay safe in an earthquake:
If you are indoors, find a secure location to wait out the quake, such as under a heavy table or desk. Doorways are among the safest places to stand, thanks to the strong beams overhead. However, watch out for swinging doors. Stay away from windows.
If you are outdoors, try to get into an open area, away from falling buildings, power lines, trees, etc.
If you are in a crowded public area, crouch down, with your hands protecting your head and neck.
If you are in your car, pull over to the side, away from power lines and overpasses, and stay inside the car until the shaking calms down.
Be sure to put on shoes immediately, to avoid injury from stepping on broken glass and objects. Check yourself and others for injuries.
Do NOT use your automobile unless there is an emergency.
If you must leave the area, try to leave word where you can be contacted.
REMEMBER that there may be aftershocks, which can also cause great damage to your surroundings. Be prepared!
32. Scientists cannot predict an earthquake because ____.
A. they haven’t got enough equipment to do s ome research about it
B. research on earthquake prediction has been going on for only fifty years
C. they have no ability to solve the difficult problems at present
D. experts can estimate the possibility of an earthquake occurring in a place
Why can’t mo st earthquakes be felt by common people ?

B. Common people are too busy to pay attention to these earthquakes.
C. Common people know little about what can cause earthquakes.
D. Most eart hquakes won’t cause great damage to common people.
What’s the importance of putting on shoes during an earthquake?
A. To run as quickly as you can
B. To save money needed for new ones
C. To help your family members
D. To avoid harm done to your feet
The best title for the text might be ____.

Opinion surveys repeatedly tell us that the only thing Americans worry about more than the environment is their health. This is 41 understandable, for health is obviously 42 to illness. What makes today's concern 43 health slightly surprising is that Americans are 44 healthier now than they have ever been. Many diseases that once 45 terror into hearts have either been entirely 46 or brought under control. Although AIDS is a notable 47 , few new mass killers have come along to 48 the ones that have been eliminated.
49 , health and the various threats to it remain everyone's 50 concern. After all, more than
half of us (57 percent) will die from either heart disease or cancer, if current 51 continue. One major problem with any 52 of health risks especially life-threatening ones is that they 53 enormously in their immediacy. For instance, AIDS if you get it will probably be 54 after a number of years. Cancer induced by smoking or 55 to radiation, on the other hand, may take 20 to 30 years 56 its catastrophic effects show 57. In making choices about health risks, 58, it is important to bear in 59 the likely time lag between taking a risk and 60 its consequences.
Those with a mind to "live for today" are apt to be indifferent to health risks that have a very long incubation period(潜伏期). Although this is short-sighted, it does make sense to discount long-term risks more than short-term ones. After all, when actually any of us is faced with the choice of doing something likely to kill us today vs doing something likely to kill us in two decades, the choice is going to be the lesser of the two evils.
41. A. chiefly B. exclusively C. mostly D. completely
42. A. preferable B. beneficial C. suitable D. desirable
43. A. with B. about C. on D. in

Dear schoolmates,
Good evening! As I am graduating, I’d like to look back on my unforgettable years here.
In the past three years, I’ve benefited a lot from my school education, which helps me grow into an independent thinker and an efficient learner. However, I was too concerned about my study to get actively involved in the extra-curriculum activities.
Looking ahead, I think the biggest challenge in my college life will be adapting to a life away from my parents and taking care of myself. But I’m full of confidence that I’ll get used to it soon.
I also want to make some suggestions to you, my dear schoolmates. Time and tide wait for no man. We teenagers should make the most of our valuable time at high school and realize our full potential.
Good luck to all of you!

As you all know, school starts every morning at 8:30 a.m. We know that most of you have jobs to get to, but we are asking everyone to make more of an effort to arrive on time. Cars will not be allowed in front of the school after 8:35 a.m. If you are running late and need to drop off your children after this time, we kindly ask that you find street parking near the school and walk with your children to the front gate.
At the end of the school day, when school gets out at 3:20 p.m., it often takes five or ten minutes for the students to come outside. Many drivers have been lining up outside the school as early as 3:00 p.m., blocking the road for half an hour or more. The local police have told us that this is a major safety concern, and they will issue tickets to anyone parked in front of the school before 3:15 p.m. If you have any questions about the new guidelines, please see Anne Richards in the administration building. Thank you.。
