A few months ago I was at a bus stop in town in the evening. The bus came on time and I took the window seat. The bus route was by the seashore and I was enjoying the breeze (微风) while watching the sea waves. After a few minutes the bus made its next stop. A young boy and a girl got on. They were standing on my left when the bus pulled off. I looked at them curiously and realized that all the window seats were occupied (占据). They could sit but not together. Suddenly a different wave passed through my body and my inner mind gave me the advice to get up. I got up and offered them my seat. The young lady smiled kindly and said thanks. I occupied another seat and we parted our ways. I don’t remember whether I got off the bus before them or not.
Months passed by. Suddenly one day while I was standing at the same bus stop waiting some time for the bus to arrive I heard a voice.
“Excuse me, Uncle.” I looked in the direction of the voice. It was a beautiful young lady.
Puzzled, I said, “I do not know you.”
She said, “Do you remember you gave us your window seat?”
Puzzled, I said, “Maybe, but what is so great in that?”
She said, “If you had not given your seat that day, perhaps I would have not sat with my friend. By sitting together it helped us bridge a misunderstanding that had been between us forever. Do you know we are getting married ne xt month?”
“Good! God bless both of you,” I replied.
The young lady again said thank you and went on her journey. I realized the importance of giving that day.
21. Why were the young boy and the girl standing on the bus?
A. Because they wanted to enjoy the sea view.
B. Because they preferred to stand.
C. Because they couldn’t sit together.
D. Because there were no empty seats.

David and Amir first met in their chemistry class at an American university. Amir was an international student from Jordan. He was excited to get to know an American. He wanted to learn more about American culture and hoped that he and David would become good friends. At first, David seemed very friendly. He always greeted Amir warmly before class. Sometimes he offered to study with Amir. He even invited Amir to have lunch with him. But after the term was over, David seemed distant. The two former classmates didn’t see each other very much at school. One day Amir decided to call David. David didn’t seem very interested in talking to him. Amir was hurt by David’s change of attitude. “David said we were friends,” Amir complained. “And I thought friends were friends forever.” Amir is a little confused.
As a foreigner, he doesn’t understand the way Americans view friendship. Americans use the word “friend” in a very general way. They may call both casual acquaintances(熟人) and close companions “friends”. These friendships are based on common interests. When the shared activity ends, the friendship may be gone. Now
as David and Amir are no longer classmates, their friendship has changed. In some cultures friendship means a strong lifelong bond between two people. In these cultures friendships develop slowly, since they are built to last. American society is one of rapid change. Studies show that one out of five American families moves every year. American friendships develop quickly, and they may change just quickly as well . People from the United States may at first seem friendly. Americans often chat easily with strangers. But American friendliness is not always an offer of true friendship. After an experience like Amir’s people who’ve been in this country for only a few months may consider Americans to be changeable. Learning how Americans view friendship can help non-Americans avoid misunderstandings. It can also help them make friends in the American way.
24. According to the passage, ______ made Amir a little confused.
A. David’s inviting him to dinner
B. David’s studying with him
C. David’s misunderstanding him
D. David’s cold attitude
25. In paragraph 2, the underlined word “ they” means_____.
A. American friendships
B. American families
C. people from the United States
D. misunderstandings
26. Why do American friendships develop and change so quickly?
A. Americans may not only call casual acquaintances but close companions “ friends”
B. American society is one of rapid change, and the families move frequently.
C. Americans often seem friendly, and chat easily with strangers at first.
D. Americans think friendship means a strong lifelong relationship between two people.
27. This passage mainly tells us_____.
A.the importance of keeping friendship
B. that everyone needs friends.
C. how Americans view friendship
D. that people should not make friends with Americans.

This summer I went to Iceland with my family. I had a great time there.
Day 1
Today we walked around the capital of Iceland. Reykjavik is a wonderful city filled
with lots of history, shopping and delicious restaurants. There are ruins dating back to the Viking Era down Reykjavik’s oldest main downtown streets. One famous monument of Reykjavik is the large church built in the city center. The church offers a view of the city that is amazing.
Day 2
We got on the bus for the Golden Circle tour where we went through the famous Thingvellir National Park, then on to the Golden Waterfall in the highlands and the Geyser (天然热喷泉). The most amazing part of this tour for me was our trip to the Geyser. There were several active geysers that we were able to stand right near. The geysers went off every ten minutes. The hot water sprayed straight up and you could feel the heat. Hot underground water is one of Iceland’s greatest resources. Iceland has over 170 hot water pools that are open all year round.
Day 3
Today we rode Icelandic horses. The Vikings arrived in Iceland more than 1,000 years ago, bringing with them their small Nordic horses. They are small, gentle, and friendly. Icelandic horses are quite a bit smaller than the horses I have ridden in Montana. I really enjoyed having the chance to ride an Icelandic horse. Doing sightseeing on horseback in Iceland was delightful.
Day 4
We took our last walk around town and down to the Harbor. We stopped and bought our last round of souvenirs (纪念品), then took a taxi to the airport. I am really looking forward to our return.

For most kids, height isn’t something they can change, so what do you do if you don’t like how tall or short you are? It might be girls feeling too tall and boys feeling too short but some really tall boys might not like all that height and some shorter girls might get tired of all the jokes or of feeling like they’re staying little while their friends are growing up.
If you are still worried about your height, talk to your parents and your doctor. Most kids don’t have a growth problem that needs help from a doctor, but it’s always OK to ask if you’re concerned.
So for most kids, it seems like there’s not much to do but wait to see how it all turns out. But you can do something right now: eat healthy and take care of yourself. If you get the nutrition(营养), sleep, and exercise you need, you’re likely to reach your maximum height. In other words, you’ll grow as tall as you were meant to grow.
And even though you may hear people say it, taking extra vitamins or supplements(补品) that you can buy in a store won’t help you get taller. Just stick to a healthy diet if you want to be the tallest you can be!
Kids who wish they weren’t so tall should still eat healthy and take care of themselves, of course. Eating less won’t make you end up any shorter unless you really starved yourself and made yourself sick.
As they get older, most kids learn to feel comfortable with their height, whether they turn out tall, short, or somewhere in between.
32. What is this text mainly about?
A. Some tips on how to grow taller.
B. Some advice on height worries.
C. Some problems kids are facing.
D. Some factors that affect height.
33. If you want to grow taller, you are advised to do the following except _____.
A. get enough sleep
B. take some exercise
C. take extra vitamins
D. get enough nutrition
34. We’ll feel comfortable with our height _____.
A. after we tell the parents
B. after we see the doctor
C. when we grow taller
D. when we get older
35. Who does this text written for?
A. Kids.
B. Parents.
C. Doctors.
D. Teachers

Often she says to us, “work while you work, and play while you play. That is
the way to be happy and gay. If you do not work, you will become lazy and be of no use to society”. What a piece of good advice this is! 40 This advice of hers will always serve as a guide to my behavior. My mother is great indeed, and I always feel proud of her.
