As a young boy,I knew what people said was not always what they meant or were feeling. And I knew it was possible to get others to do what I wanted if I read their real feelings and responded suitably to their needs. At the age of eleven,I sold sponge rubber (泡沫橡胶) doortodoor after school and quickly worked out how to tell if someone was likely to buy from me.When I knocked on a door,if someone told me to go away but their hands were open and they showed their palms (the inside surfaces of their hands),I knew it was safe to continue with my presentation (展示) because they weren’t angry or threatening although they may have a dismissive (不屑的) attitude. If someone told me to go away in a soft voice but used a pointed finger or closed hand,I knew it was time to leave.
As a teenager,I became a pots and pans (炊具) salesperson, and my ability to read people earned me enough money to buy my first house.Selling gave me the chance to meet people and study them close and to know whether they would buy or not, simply by watching their body language.
I joined the life insurance business at the age of twenty. And I went on to break several sales records for my company, becoming the youngest person to sell over a mi llion dollars’ worth of business in my first year. This achievement allowed me to become a member of the wellknown Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT,which recognizes the world’s top achievers in life insurance).I was lucky that the skills I’d learned as a boy in watching body language while selling pots and pans could be used in this new_area,and were directly related to the success I could have in any business closely connected with people.

(2019·河北唐山高一第二学期期末) Most people are good at recognizing the universal facial expressions of our emotions—anger, joy, sadness, etc.,which present a lot of emotional information. In fact, there are less obvious facial expressions called microexpressions (MEs).Human beings often show them and communicate their private thoughts to others unconsciously (无意识的).What’s more, people cannot hide them, including the experienced ones. And MEs have universality (普遍性),regardless of one’s age, religion or culture.
All the findings lead to the possibilities of MEs’ wide use in different fields, where people can use MEs to understand other peop le’s true feelings, thoughts,or beliefs.Police can use MEs to detect unnatural behavior.Teachers can recognize unease in students and give a more careful explanation.Businessmen can use expressions of happiness to determine when they have given a suitable price. When one wants to be able to do what are mentioned above,it is useful to be able to read MEs.
However,MEs are difficult to read, because they are unconscious, and occur sometimes as fast as onetenth of a second or even onefifteenth of a second. At present, even highly trained persons are not always able to notice them. Some people do see something that has changed on the face, but they don’t know exactly what it is that has changed.Since the human recognition accuracy (精准) is so low,a possible method for spotting MEs would be very precious.
5.Which word can replace the underlined word “detect” in Paragraph 2?
A.Discover. B.Show.
C.Govern. D.Affect.
6.What makes it difficult for people to read MEs?
A.Absence of training.
B.MEs’ short existence.
C.MEs’ univ ersality.
D.Cultural differences.
7.What will probably be discussed in the next paragraph of the passage?
A.The meaning of MEs.
B.The importance of spotting MEs.
C.The application of MEs.
D.The approach to recognizing MEs.

5.Which word can replace the underlined word “detect” in Paragraph 2?
A.Discover. B.Show.
C.Govern. D.Affect.
解析:词义猜测题。

根据画线词前的“people can use MEs to understand other people’s true feelings, thoughts,or beliefs.”可知,人们可以利用微表情来了解他人的真实感受和想法,再结合画线词后的例子可知,此处是说警察可以利用微表情来发现非自然的行为,由此可知画线词词义为“发现”,故A项正确。

答案: B
7.What will probably be discussed in the next paragraph of the passage?
A.The meaning of MEs.
B.The importance of spotting MEs.
C.The application of MEs.
D.The approach to recognizing MEs.
解析:推理判断题。

根据最后一段最后一句话“Since the human recognition accuracy (精准)is so low,a possible method for spotting MEs would be very precious.”可知,由于人类的识别精度较低,因此一种可能的微表情识别方法将是非常宝贵的,因此文章接下来会承接上文,介绍微表情的识别方法,故D项正确。

答案: D
