4 But dislike is not the only reason why some cultures will not eat a certain food. In some cultures, certain foods are taboo. Taboo is a word from the language of the Fiji Islands that is used to describe something that is forbidden. Some foods are taboo in certain religions, but there are also other food taboos that are not connected to a religion. We do not usually think about why certain things are taboo in our culture. We may not even know why they are taboo. Anthropologists try to discover the hidden reasons for taboos. For example, the sacred cows of India are well known. Cows can go wherever they want to in the streets of India, and they can eat anything they want from the supplies of the food sellers on the street.

Although folk music is found in all socalled high cultures, the usefulness of the concept is most conveniently used to designate a type of music in Western culture. In the modern world folk music has assumed new roles, including the reinforcement of ethnic identities, the advocacy of social change (as in the U.S. civil rights movement), and the building of national consciousness in heterogeneous nations. Folk music continues to be a vital force in the world’s musical life. Since the advent of rock music, American popular music has become a major industry, capable of employing thousands of talented young musicians, and exercising a significant musical influence around the world.

Text A What Is Culture?
1 The word “culture” has many different meanings. For example, we sometimes say that people who know about art, music, and literature are cultured. However, the word culture has a different meaning for anthropologists (people who study humankind). To an anthropologist the word culture means all the ways in which a group of people act, dress, think, and feel. People have to learn the cultural ways of their community: they are not something that the people in the group are born with.

As a result, the cows are a problem. However, no one in India will kill them or eat them. It is taboo to do so. This custom seems strange to other people, but anthropologists believe that there are reasons for it. First, cows are valuable because the farmers need them to help plow their fields. Second, cow manure is used as a fertilizer on the fields. In India, many farmers cannot afford to spend money on fertilizer. Third, the cow manure can be dried and burned to make cooking fires. Therefore, farmers that kill their cows for meat soon find that they cannot plow or fertilize their fields or make a cooking fire.

3 Franklin had a practical mind. When he saw a problem, he tried to do something about it. The houses of Philadelphia were built of wood and easily caught fire. Neighbors tried to help each other, but they could do little to save a burning house. So Franklin organized a fire -fighting company. Philadelphia's fire loss became so low that the first fire-insurance company in the United States was soon set up there. Ben Franklin was one of its directors. He also persuaded the city to pave and light its streets. Again, the fact that people had trouble keeping their houses warm in winter set Franklin's active mind to work.
4 He did not patent the invention. He was too busy with his discoveries to bother with making money. Although he was a wealthy man by the time he was forty-two, money by itself did not interest him. He valued it because it enabled him to retire from business. Then he had time to spend on other things that seemed more worthwhile. What he really cared for most of all was science.

1 Education — the process of developing and training the mind — should be far more than the accumulation of credit hours. If you take advantage of all education has to offer, you will develop the skills and talents you need to succeed in your career — and in life. 2 How can education help you succeed? Any program, no matter what the length or the focus, is an opportunity to set and strive for goals. Education is what you make of it. A dedicated, goal-oriented learner will benefit more from school than a student who doesn't focus. If you make the most of your mind, your time, and your educational opportunities, you will realize your potential.
