Which is safer --- staying at home, traveling to work on public transport, or working at the office? Surprisingly, each of these carries the same risk, which is very low. However, what about flying compared to working in the chemical industry? Unfortunately, the former is 65 times riskier than the latter! In fact the accident rate of workers in the chemical industry is less than that of almost any of human activity, and almost as safe as staying at home. The trouble with the chemical industry is that when things go wrong they often cause death to those living nearby. It is this that chemical accidents so newsworthy. Fortunately, they are extremely rare. The most famous ones happened at Texas City (1947), Flixborough (1974), Seveso (1976), Pemex (1984) and Bhopal (1984).Some of these are always in the minds of the people even though the loss of life was small. No one died at Seveso, and only 28 workers at Flixborough. The worst accident of all was Bhopal, where up to 3,000 were killed. The Texas City explosion of fertilizer killed 552. The Pemex fire at a storage plant for natural gas in the suburbs of Mexico City took 542 lives, just a month before the unfortunate event at Bhopal. Some experts have discussed these accidents and used each accident to illustrate a particular danger. Thus the Texas City was caused by tons of ammonium nitrate, which is safe unless stored in a great quantity. The Flixborough fireball was the fault of management, which took risks to keep production going during essential repairs. The Seveso accident shows what happens if the local authorities lack knowledge of the danger on their doorstep. When the poisonous gas drifted over the town, local leaders were incapable of taking effective action. The Pemex fire was made worse by an overloaded site in an overcrowded suburb. The fire set off a chain reaction of exploding storage tanks. Yet, by a miracle, the two largest tanks did not explode. Had these caught fire, then 3,000 strong rescue team and fire fighters would all have died.1. ALinda Evans was my best friend — like the sister I never had. We did everything together: piano lessons, movies, swimming, horseback riding. When I was 13, my family moved away. Linda and I kept in touch through letters, and we saw each other on special times —like my wedding and Linda’s. Soon we were busy with children and moving to new homes, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent came back, stamped “Address Unknown”. I had no idea about how to find Linda.Over the years, I missed Linda very much. I wanted to share happiness of my children and then grandchildren. And I needed to share my sadness when my brother and then mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Linda could fill. One day, I was reading a newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked very much like Linda and whose last name was Wagman —Linda’s married name. “There must be thousands of Wagmans.” I thought, but I still wrote to her.She called as soon as she got my letter. “Mrs. Tobin!” she said excitedly, “Linda Evans Wagman is my mother.”Minutes later I heard a voice that I recognized at once, even after 40 years. We laughed and cried and caught up on each other’s lives. Now the empty place in my heart is filled. And there’s one thing that Linda and I know for sure: We won’t lose each other again!26. Most young architects—particularly those in big cities—can only dream about working in a building of their own. And making that dream come true often means finding a building no one else seems to want, which is exactly what happened to David Yocum and his partner,Brian Bell. Their building is a former automobile electrical-parts firm in Atlanta. From the outside,it looks too old, even something horrible, but open the door and you are in a wide, open courtyard, lined on three sides with rusting (生锈的)walls. In 2000,Yocum and Bell found this building in the city’s West End. Built in 1947,the structure had been abandoned years earlier and the roof of the main building had fallen down. But the price was right,so Yocum bought it. He spent eight months of his off-hours on demolition (拆除),pulling rubbish out through the roof, because it was too dangerous to go inside the building. The demolition was hard work, but it gave him time to think about what he wanted to do,and“to treasure what was there—the walls, the rust, the light. “ Yocum said. “Every season, more paint falls off the walls and more rust develops. It’s like an art installation (装置)in there—a slow-motion show. “Since the back building had been constructed without windows,an all-glass front was added to the building to give it a view of the courtyard, and skylights were installed in the roof. The back of the building is a working area and a living room for Yocum and his wife. A sort of buffer (缓冲) zone between the front and the back contains a bathroom,a kitchen and a mechanical room, and the walls that separate these zones have openings that allow views through to the front of the studio and the courtyard beyond.Yocum and Bell, who have just completed an art gallery for the city, feel that the experience from the decoration of their building, focusing on the inside rather than the outside, has influenced their work. It has also given these architects a chance to show how they can make more out of less.1. According to the passage,it is for most young architects in big cities to work in a building of their own.A. easyB. unnecessaryC. unrealisticD. common2. Yocum bought the old building because .A. it was a bargain to himB. it was still in good conditionC. it was located in the city centerD. it looked attractive from the outside3. Working on the old building,Yocum and Bell .A. pulled rubbish out through the roofB. removed the skylights from the bathroomC. presented a slow-motion show in an art galleryD. built a kitchen at the back part of the old building4. It can be inferred from the passage that Yocum and Bell .A. benefited a lot from pulling down the roofB. turned more old buildings into art galleriesC. got inspiration from decorating their old buildingD. paid more attention to the outside of the art gallery5. The main idea of the passage is that .A. people can learn a lot from their failuresB. it is worthwhile to spend money on an old buildingC. people should not judge things by their appearanceD. creative people can make the best of what they have【参考答案】1--5 、CAACD科普知识(阅读理解)由 (2009安徽,C)改编Sometimes,the simplest ideas are the best. For example,to absorb heat from the sun to heat water, you need large, flat, black surfaces. One way to do that is to build those surfaces specially,on the roofs of buildings. But why go to all that trouble when cities are full of black surfaces already,in the form of asphalt(柏油) roads?Ten years ago, this thought came into the mind of Arian de Bondt,a Dutch engineer. He finally persuaded his boss to follow it up.The result is that their building is now heated in winter and cooled in summer by a system that relies on the surface of the road outside. The heat-collector is a system of connected water pipes. Most of them run from one side of the street to the other, just under the asphalt road. Some, however, dive deep into the ground. When the street surface gets hot in summer, water pumped through the pipes picks up this heat and takes it underground through one of the diving pipes. At a depth of 100 metres lies a natural aquifer(蓄水层) into which several heat exchangers(交换器) have been built. The hot water from the street runs through these exchangers, warming the groundwater, before returning to the surface through another pipe. The aquifer is thus used as a heat store. In winter, the working system is changed slightly.Water is pumped through the heat exchangers to pick up the heat stored during summer. This water goes into the building and is used to warm the place up.After performing that task,it is pumped under the asphalt and its remaining heat keeps the road free of snow and ice.1.Which of the following is true according to the first two paragraphs?( )A.Arian de Bondt got his idea from his boss.rge, flat, black surfaces need to be built in cities.C.The Dutch engineer’s system has been widely used.D.Heat can also be collected from asphalt roads.2.For what purpose are the diving pipes used?( )A.To absorb heat from the sun.B.To store heat for future use.C.To turn solar energy into heat energy.D.To carry heat down below the surface.3.From the last paragraph we can learn that .A.some pipes have to be re-arranged in winterB.the system can do more than warming up the buildingC.the exchangers will pick up heat from the street surfaceD.less heat may be collected in winter than in summer4.What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?( )A.What we shall do if the system goes wrong.B.What we shall do if there are no asphalt roads.C.How the system cools the building in summer.D.How the system collects heat in spring and autumn.语篇解读:城市的黑色柏油路有了用武之地,可以用来收集热量,起到冬暖夏凉的功效。

Human remains of ancient settlements will be reburied and lo st to science under a law that threatens research into the hist ory of humans in Britain, a group of leading archaeologists(考古学家) says. I a letter addressed to the justice secretary, Ken Cla rke, 40 archaeologists write of their “deep and widespread co ncern” about the issue. It centers on the law introduced by the Ministry of Justice in 2008 which requires all human remains unearthed in England and Wales to be reburied within two ye ars, regardless of their age. The decision means scientists ha ve too little time to study bones and other human remains of n ational and cultural significance.“Your current requirement that all archaeologically unearthed human remains should be reburied, whether after a standard period of two years or further special extension, is contrary to basic principles of archaeological and scientific research and of museum practice,” they write. The law applies to any pieces of bone uncovered at around 4 00 dig sites, including the remains of 60 or so bodies found at Stonehenge in 2008 that date back to 3,000 BC. Archaeologis ts have been granted a temporary extension to give them mor e time, but eventually the bones will have to be returned to th e ground. The arrangements may result in the waste of future discoverie s at sites such as Happisburgh in Norfolk, where digging is co ntinuing after the discovery of stone tools made by early hum ans 950,000 years ago. If human remains were found at Happ isburgh, they would be the oldest in northern Europe and the f irst indication of what this species was. Under the current prac tice of the law those remains would have to be reburied and e ffectively destroyed. Before 2008, guidelines allowed for the proper preservation a nd study of bones of sufficient age and historical interest, whil e the Burial Act 1857 applied to more recent remains. The Mi nistry of Justice assured archaeologists two years ago that th e law was temporary, but has so far failed to revise it.Mike Parker Pearson, an archaeologist at Sheffield University, said: “Archaeologists have been extremely patient because w e wee led to believe the ministry was sorting out this problem, but we feel that we cannot wait any longer.”The ministry has no guidelines on where or how remains shou ld be reburied, or on what records should be kept.1. 2017版高考英语一轮总复习习题 必修4 Module 4含解析
第一部分必修四Module 4Ⅰ.阅读理解(2015·河南八市重点高中质检) Around four years ago, I received a call from the principal of our school as to the “Parents View” talk the next morning. He asked me to speak to the group. After the call, my whole body became feverish and panicky. The time from his call to the next morning seemed like years. The whole night, I could not sleep with many ominous_apprehensions in mind. One of them was to call the principal with regret and tell him that I could not come. Finally, I gathered some co urage. I thought, “If I miss this opportunity, surely the school will never invite me again to any of their programs.”I reached the school in time. Before my turn came, my whole body was trembling. When my turn came and I started speaking, my heartbeat increased and my mouth went dry. I wasn't even able to read the written speech properly. I was not aware of where I was standing and what I was reading. That was the day when I realized my biggest weakness: Public Speaking. After my speech, I met with the principal and explained what happened to me. He told me that this happens to everyone. Even great speakers faced the same things when they started. He suggested that I come again next time.Around one month later,I was invited to refer to a topic on motivation. This time I was feeling comfortable. My speech was appreciated by the principal as well as the teachers, because I was able to get my idea across to them. They encouraged me and praised my efforts. After delivering it successfully, I became more confident. I said to myself,“If I can speak in front of such a learned audience, like the principal who educates others, I can now speak in front of others too.”I started delivering lectures on various topics like Self Motivation, Personality Development, Personal Excellence, Spoken English and Presentation Skills. This has become a passion for me. I have learned that everything is possible if we have the courage to take the first step.语篇解读:本文为记叙文。

Many studies tell us that regular exercise not only helps our bodies but improves memory, and eases anxiety. But what is happening to the mind during workout to create all these benefits?A new study from Sweden suggests that a specific protein found in trained muscles might contribute to exercise's mental benefits. This protein, the researchers found, might help our bodies process molecules that, if out of balance, can stress us and contribute to depression(萎靡不振). The findings were published in the journal Cell.To test this, the researchers kept attacking some mice with flashing lights, loud noises and interrupting their sleep for weeks. Predictably, this treatment makes the mice show signs and biochemical markers of depression. But not all the mice showed those signs. One group, specially raised to have high levels of a protein called PGC1alpha1 (the one in trained muscles), did not show those depression signs. PGC1alpha1 increases production of an enzyme that breaks down a chemical called kynurenine. Kynurenine helps the body respond to an activated immune system(活性免疫系统), but it also plays a role in depression.“Our origi nal research assumption was that trained muscle would produce a substance(物质) with beneficial effects on the brain,” Jorge Ruas of the Karolinska Institute told . “We actually found the opposite: welltrained muscle produces an enzyme that remove s harmful substances away from the body.”This study was in mice, but it lines up nicely with all the other lines of evidence that exercise is good for mental health.

AIt is obvious that doctors recognize obesity as a health problem. So why is it so hard for them to talk to their patients about it?The results of two surveys, one of primary care physicians and the other of patients, found that while most doctors want to helppatients lose weight and think it is their responsibility to do so, they often don’t know what to say.“So while doctors may tell patients they are overweight, the convers ation often ends there,” said Christine C. Ferguson, director of the Stop Obesity Alliance. “Patients are not told about the possibility of diabetes (a kind of disease),” she said. “And doctors don’t feel they have good information to give. They felt that they didn’t have adequate tools to address this problem. The lack of dialogue hurts patients, too. The patient survey, of over 1,000 adults, found that most overweight patients don’t even know that they’re too heavy. Only 39 percent of overweight people surveyed had ever been told by a health care provider that they were overweight.Of those who were told they were obese, 90 percent were alsotold by their doctors to lose weight, the survey found. In fact most have tried to lose weight and may have been successful in the past—and many are still trying, the survey found. And many understand that losing even a small amount of weight can have a positive impact on their health and reduce their risk of obesityrelated diseases like hypertension and diabetes.Dr. William Bestermann Jr., medical director of Holston Medical Group, in Kingsport, Tenn. , which ranks the 10th in obesity among metropolitan areas in the United States, said the dialogue had to be anongoing one and could not be dropped after just one mention of the problem. “If you’re to be successful with helping your patients lose weight, you have to talk to them at actually every visit about their progress, and find something to encourage them and coach them,” he said.He acknowledged that many doctors tend to be not optimistic.“Part of this is that there's this common belief, and doctors are burdened by it, too, that overweight people are weak-willed and just don’t have any willpower and are selfindulgent and all that business,” he said. “If you think that way, you’re not going to spend time having a productive conversation.”1. This is an international register of properties that are recognized as having outstanding cultural or natural values of international significance. Kakadu is the largest national park in Australia and is the second largest national park in the world. Kakaduis a biological wonderland, which is almost 8,000 square miles. The wildlife in Kakadu National Park includes over 280 kinds of birds, 60 kinds of native mammals, 55 kinds of freshwater fish, thousands of insects, and many reptiles, the most famous of which is the salt-water crocodile. All life in the park depends on water.Kakadu is not only home to the wildlife but the area is also famous for the longest continuous human culture that exists in the world. Kakadu contains one of the longest continuous records of rock art in the world, with around 5,000 paintings, with rock sites dating back 25,000 years. More than 1,000 sites have been recorded. Kakadu has been given double World Heritage status by the United Nations. It is one of only 17 of the 469 World heritage Areas listed for both natural and cultural values. It is Australia’s largest national park, but it isn’t just the size that surprises visitors—it is the sense of something very old and grand. Creation of the 500 km escarpment (悬崖) began 2,000 million years ago. Today those gorges are filled with rainforests, washed by waterfalls.Kakadu is one of the world’s special places. It is hard to pick the ideal time to visit Kakadu. In the wet season large areas of the park are closed to the public. It would not be possible to enter or exit from the park through the Kakadu Highway. Most of the people there agree that the best time to visit is at the end of the dry season. Some areas of Kakadu have restricted visiting times, and some are not open to the general public. Over 230 000 tourists visit Kakadu National Park every year. As you enter Kakadu National Park, you will be required to buy a permit. Part of this money is paid to the Traditional Owners of the land and the rest is given to the repairs of the park.6. Since 1994, Bell and his team have scanned nearly 800 people with MRI machines to create “fat maps” showing where people store fat.According to the result, people who keep their weight through diet rather than exercise are likely to have major deposits of internal fat, even if they are slim.Even people with normal Body Mass Index scores can have surprising levels of fat deposits inside. Of the women, as many as 45 percent of those with normal BMI scores (20 to 25) actually had too high levels of internal fat. Among men, the percentage was nearly 60 percent.According to Bell, people who are fat on the inside are actually on the edge of being fat. They eat too many fatty and sugary foods, but they are not eating enough to be fat. Scientists believe we naturallystore fat around the belly first, but at some point, the body may start storing it elsewhere.Doctors are unsure about the exact dangers of internal fat, but some think it has something to do with heart disease and diabetes. They want to prove that internal fat damages the body’s communication systems. The good news is that internal fat can be easily burned off through exercise or even by improving your diet. “If you want to be healthy, there is no short cut. Exercise has to be an important part of your lifestyle,” Bell said.11. What is this piece of news mainly about?A. Thin people may be fat inside.B. Internal fat is of no importance.C. Internal fat leads to many diseases.D. Thin people also have troubles.12. Doctors have found _____.A. the exact dangers of internal fatB. internal fat is the cause of heart disease and diabetesC. being slim is not dangerous at allD. being slim doesn’t mean you are not fat inside13. According to the passage, which of the following is WRONG?A. Exercise can help to reduce the internal fat.B. People can get rid of internal fat by improving diet.C. Men are more likely to have too much internal fat.D. People with heart disease all have internal fat.14. From the last paragraph, we can find that _____.A. whether internal fat can lead to disease has been provedB. exercise plays in important role in people’s life for keeping healthyC. thin people usually have internal fat even if they are slimD. it is easier to burn off internal fat than external fat15. The underlined part in the last paragraph means _____.A. a long roadB. an easy wayC. a clear differenceD. a short distanceDFor years, there has been a bias(偏见)against science among clinical psychologists. In a two-year analysis to be published in November in Perspectives on Psychological Science, psychologists led by Timothy B. Baker of the University of Wisconsin charge that manyclinical psychologists fail to “provide the treatments for which there is the strongest evidence of effectiveness” and “give more weight to thei r personal experiences than to science.” As a result, patients have no guarantee that their “treatment will be informed by …science.” Walter Mischel of Columbia University is even crueler in his judgment. “The disconnect between what clinical psychologists do and what science has discovered is an extreme embarrassment,” he told me, and “there is a widening gap between clinical practice and science.”The “widening” reflects the great progress that psychological research has made in identifying the most effective treatments. Thanks to strict clinical trials, we now know that teaching patients to think about their thoughts in new, healthier ways and to act on those new ways of thinking are effective against depression, panic disorder and other problems, with multiple trials showing that these treatments—the tools of psychology—bring more lasting benefits than drugs. You wouldn’t know this if you sought help from a typicalclinical psychologist. Although many treatments are effective, relatively few psychologists learn or practice them. Why in the world not? For one thing, says Baker, clinical psychologists are “very doubtful about the role of science” and “lack solid science training”. Also, one third of patients get better no matter what treatment (if any) they have, “and psychologists rememberthese successes, believing, wrongly, that they are the result of the treatment.”When faced with evidence that treatments they offer are not supported by science, clinical psychologists argue that they know better than some study that works. A 2008 study of 591 psychologists in private practice found that they rely more on their own and colleagues’ experience than on science when deciding how to treat a patient. If they keep on this path as insurance companies demand evidence-based medicine, warns Mischel, psychology will “discredit itself.”16. Many clinical psychologists fail to provide the most effective treatments because _____.A. they are unfamiliar with their patientsB. they believe in science and evidenceC. they depend on their colleagues’ helpD. they rely on their personal experiences17. The widening gap between clinical practice and science is due to _____.A. the cruel judgment by Walter MischelB. the fact that most patients get better after being treatedC. the great progress that has been made in psychological researchD. the fact that patients prefer to take drugs rather than have other treatments18. How do clinical psychologists respond when charged thattheir treatments are not supported by science?A. They feel embarrassed.B. They try to defend themselves.C. They are disappointed.D. They doubt their treatments.19. In Mischel’s opinion, psychology will ______.A. destroy its own reputation if no improvement is madeB. develop faster with the support of insurance companiesC. work together with insurance companies to provide better treatmentD. become more reliable if insurance companies won’t demand evidence-based medicine20. What is the purpose of this passage?A. To show the writer’s disapproval of clinical psychologists.B. To inform the readers of the risks of psychological treatments.C. In Western culture, 21 was the age at which young people traditionally received a key to their parents’ door, as a symbol of entering adulthood. Now, the age of 21 is a time when people ask themselves: where do I go from here?Jiang Fang zhou’s21 years have been filled with the kind of success most young people wouldn’t dare hope for in a lifetime. She published her first book at the age of nine and has written many more since then. She is regarded as a spokesperson for her generation. However, her hopes and concerns for the future appear decidedly normal. She explains that while her fellow students are chiefly concerned with getting a job or buying an apartment, shefrets over how she can excel in her work when having limited experience of the world. However, Jiang, now a senior at the School of Journalism and Communication of Tsinghua University, notes that her peers face intense pressure and competition at school. They are expected to excel in their field of study despite limited experience, just as Jiang is expected to shine in the literary world.Young people, she says, have been forced to open their eyes to the world around them. Jiang’s world has opened up, too. She’s more at ease with hersel f at 21, compared with when she began college.“My horizon h as bro adened and I’m more tolerant,” she says. “As a freshman, I was desperate.I stopped people around me and asked: ‘Is there anything in the world still worth hoping for? ‘ But now I don’t do that.”Jiang says that she m ay not pursue writing as her main future career because she wants to try“other lifestyles”—overseas travel and study touring sound particularly inviting to her. But she is concerned that many foreigners have skewed (歪曲的,倾斜的) perceptions about China.“A few days ago I over heard a conversation between two foreigners sitting next to me on a flight,” says Jiang. “They were having a heated discussion about the number of beggars in China. And how Chinese always go for ‘petty profits’. In fact, they had been in China for only a week.”Jiang believes prejudice is unavoidable, but she also maintains that Chinese and Westerners, for example, share much common ground.“We sh are the same principles, such as honesty and a willingne ss to help others,” says Jiang. “The differences between peoples are not that huge.”1. (湖北襄阳四中、龙泉中学、荆州中学联考)Are you an optimist? Do you look at your glass and see it as half full? Do you believe that every cloud has a silver lining and that things generally turn out for the best? Do you believe that if something is meant to be, it will be? If you reply “yes” to all of these questions, then you are an optimist. You probably are enthusiastic, cheerful and outgoing. You may be successful at work and in love. But you may be misguided because things don't turn out for the best. You may believe that when on door closes another one opens(for example, you may fail to obtain a new job; another chance will come around soon). Wrong. When one door closes, another door slams(砰然关上)in your face. That's bitter reality. Now a book has been published which confirms what pessimists(悲观者)have suspected all along. it's called The Positive Power of Defensive Pessimism. Its author argues that defensive pessimism can lead to positive results. Defensive pessimism is a strategy used to manage fear, anxiety and worry. Defensive pessimists prepare for the tings by setting low outcomes for themselves. They carefully consider everything that may go wrong and plan for ways to handle these problems. And this gives them a sense of control. Lawrence Sanno, a psychology professor, says, “What's interesting about defensive pessimists is that they tend to be very successful people, so their low opinion of the situation's outcomes is not realistic. They use it to motivate themselv es to perform better.”So far,so good. This is not rocket science. Defensive pessimists prepare carefully and consider what might go wrong, whether at work, on date or even in a sports game. It makes sense to have a back-up plan. Mr. Peter Johnson, aged twenty-three, battled for half an hour to escape from his trapped car yesterday when it landed upside down in three feet of water. Mr. Johnson took the only escape route—through the boot(行李箱).Mr. Johnson’s car had finished up in a ditch(沟渠)at Romney Marsin, Kent after skidding(打滑)on ice and hitting a bank. “Fortunately, the water began to come in only slowly, ”Mr. Johnson said. “I couldn’t force the doors because they were jammed against the walls of the ditch and I dared not open the windows because I knew water would come flooding in. ”Mr. Johnson, a sweet salesman of Sitting Home, Kent, first tried to attract the attention of other motorists by sounding the horn and hammering on the roof and boot. Then he began his struggle to escape.Later he said, “It was really a half penny that sav ed my life. It was the only coin I had in my pocket and I used it to unscrew the back seat to get into the boot. I hammered desperately with a hammer trying to make someone hear, but no help came. ”It took ten minutes to unscrew the seat, and a further five minutes to clear the sweet samples from the boot. Then Mr. Johnson found a wrench(扳手)and began to work on the boot lock. Fifteen minutes passed by. “It was the only chance I had. Finally it gave, but as soon as I moved the boot lid, the water and mud poured in. I forced the lid down into the mud and scrambled clear as the car filled up. ”His hands and arms cut and bruised(擦伤), Mr. Johnson got to Beckett Farm nearby, where he was looked after by the farmer’s wife, Mrs. Lucy Bates. Huddled in a blanket, h e said, “That thirty minutes seemed like hours. ”Only the tips of the car wheels were visible, police said last night. The vehicle had sunk into two feet of mud at the bottom of the ditch.【文章大意】本文记述了Mr. Johnson由于车祸被困于水下车内半个小时, 最后死里逃生的故事。
