No more waking up early, no more homework, and no more tests for a little while. Don't get me wrong, I like school and learning new things, but a break is always nice.My family and I didn't make any big travel plans this summer since my dad had to work a lot. That's okay though, because there are still plenty of fun things we can do close to home. One of the things I'm most looking forward to is going camping with my cousins. We try to go camping together at least once every summer. It's always a fun adventure!Last year when we went camping, we stayed at a campground in the forest near a beautiful lake. We brought tents and sleeping bags and everything we needed to cook over the campfire. My favorite part was making s'mores! There's nothing quite like a warm, gooey s'more on a summer night. We also went canoeing on the lake one day. Even though I got a little wet when we tipped over, it was still really fun.At night before we went to bed, we would sit around the campfire and look at the stars. My uncle knows a lot about constellations, so he would point them out to us in the night sky.I thought it was so cool being able to see the stars so clearly without all the city lights. We even saw a few shooting stars! Our last morning of camping, we woke up early to watch the sunrise over the lake. It was such a pretty orange and pink color. I just love being out in nature like that.When we weren't camping, we spent a lot of time swimming at the community pool near our house. I could spend hours splashing around and playing pool games with my friends. We would have contests to see who could do the biggest cannon ball or who could hold their breath the longest underwater. One time, my friend Matthew tried to walk on the bottom of the deep end, but he ran out of air and had to swim back up. It was really funny!My friends and I also had lemonade stands a few times to try and earn some extra summer spending money. We would set up a little stand on the corner by the park and take turns being in charge while the others handed out lemonade and cookies to people passing by. I have to admit, the lemonade didn't always turn out that great depending on whose mom had made it, but people bought it anyway because they thought we were cute kids trying to make a buck. We used the money to buy ice cream and candy from the corner store.One of my other favorite activities this summer was the reading program at the local library. They gave away small prizes and entered you into drawings if you read a certain number of books. So I ended up reading a ton of books! I loved getting lost in the different stories and using my imagination to picture what was happening. Some of the best books I read were fantasy adventures where kids would go on magical quests to defeat evil sorcerers or travel through time. I wish I could actually go on adventures like that!We also had a big neighborhood block party one weekend where all the families got together for games, music, and food. They closed off the street so we could run around and ride our bikes. My dad manned the grill and cooked up hamburgers and hot dogs for everyone. And the moms made dishes like baked beans, coleslaw, and lots of other picnic foods. For dessert, there was a whole table of pies, cakes, and other sweet treats that neighbors had baked. I don't think I've ever eaten so much in one day!After stuffing ourselves, the adults sat around and chatted while the kids organized games. We had relay races, water balloon tosses, and even a talent show. I did a short dance routine for the talent show and won third place! They gave me aribbon and 5 gift card to the ice cream shop. Definitely going to put that to good use soon! The block party ended with a fireworks show once it got dark out. Watching all the bright, colorful fireworks bursting in the night sky was the perfect way to wrap up the day's fun.Overall, this summer has been pretty great so far. I've had plenty of adventures and made a bunch of happy new memories with my family and friends. Sure, I've also had my fair share of boredom on some of the slower days at home. But isn't that what summer is all about? You need those lazy days too where you can just recharge your batteries.
