课时提升作业三十六选修8Unit 1 A land of diversity(限时35分钟)Ⅰ. 阅读理解A(2017·湖北七校联考) Nearly 19 percent of teachers of color(有色人种教师) left their jobs after the 2014-2015 school year. Some left for personal reasons like taking care of their families. But 50 percent said they left because they were dissatisfied with their employment situation, such as poor working conditions, student discipline problems and large class sizes. Thus, taking immediate measures to improve it is our top priority. For years, researchers have proved the benefits of increasing the share of minority teachers in schools, especially as our public school system has turned to one that is made up mostly of minority students. Teachers of color, who are more likely than their white counterparts to choose to work in racially diverse schools, offer particular benefits to their students. Graduation rates increase among minority students when they are taught by racially similar educators, research shows. They canalso serve as positive role models, and their presence reduces the chance of racial discrimination at school. The Shanker Institute report suggests that the rate of minority teacher hiring is not the whole problem. The problem is what happens after these teachers enter the classroom. These teachers often work in high-poverty rural schools. They are more likely to have less-desirable working conditions.Diversity is a key component to equality and opportunity. Where the re’s a diverse teaching workforce, all kids thrive. So solutions must be found at once to turn this trend around. Firstly, schools should develop mentorship programs that support minority teachers once they are in the classroom. Secondly, more money should be spent in improving working conditions in these schools. Of course, school headmasters should also be evaluated on their ability to retain teachers of color.【文章大意】作者认为学校要留住有色人种教师, 关键是要提高他们的工作条件。

Unit 1 A land of diversityⅠ.阅读理解A(2017·浙江)Getting less sleep has become a bad habit for most American kids.According to a new survey(调查) by the National Sleep Foundation,51% of kids aged 10 to 18 go to bed at 10 pm or later on school nights, even though they have to get up st year the Foundation reported that nearly 60% of 7-to 12-year-olds said they felt tired during the day,and 15% said they had fallen asleep at school. How much sleep you need depends a lot on your age.Babies need a lot of rest:most of them sleep about 18 hours a day!Adults need about eight hours. For most school-age children, ten hours is ideal(理想的).But the new National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35% of 10-to 12-year-olds get only seven or eight hours. And guess what almost half of the surveyed kids said they do before bedtime?Watch TV.“More children are going to bed with TVs on,and there are more opportunities(机会) to stay awake, with more homework, the Internet and the phone,” says Dr.Mary Carskadon,a sleep researcher at Brown University Medical School. She says these activities at bedtime can get kids all excited and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep.Other experts say part of the problem is chemical.Changing levels of body chemicals called hormones not only make t eenagers’ bodies develop adult characteristics, but also make it hard for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 pm.Because sleepiness is such a problem for teenagers, some school districts have decided to start high school classes later than they used to.Three years ago, schools in Edina,Minnesota, changed the start time from 7:25 am to 8:30 am.Students, parents and teachers are pleased with the results.【语篇导读】研究表明,大部分美国孩子已经形成了不良的睡眠习惯。

A land of diversity李仕才一、阅读理解Vinegar makes salad, fries and dumplings taste better, and you can even use it to clean your windows. And now, according to scientists, it may even the planet’s population survive climate change.Researchers from the RIKEN Center for Sustainable Resource Science (CSRS) in Japan found that growing plants in vinegar makes them more resistant to droughts. This could mean that in the future, worries about climate change affecting the world’s supply of food will be much lower. The discovery was made after the researchers studied the Arabidopsis, a plant known for its ability to survive in dry weather. It was found that when the plant was placed in drought-like conditions, it produced a chemical called acetate(醋酸盐)—the main component of vinegar. After discovering this, the scientists experimented further by adding acetate to the soil of other plants, before they stopped giving them water completely. After leaving the plants for 14 days, they found that the ones treated with acetate had survived, while the untreated plants had dried up and died. It’s hoped that this simple method of survival could soon be used to help farmers in dry countries keep their crops alive. "In the experiment, we targeted the staple foods of the world—rice, wheat and maize—and the basic plant of breeding species, rapeseed(油菜籽)," Jong Myong Kim, co-author of the study, told Popular Science magazine.Kim also told the magazine he’s already been in touch with people all over the world who are interested in trying this simple and cost-effective method out for themselves from flower growing companies to amateur gardeners. Although at this point keeping thirsty plants alive isn’t as easy as just pouring vinegar over them, Kim said he and his team are working on making the process as simple as possible. "Now we are trying to cooperate with some farmers, and also some companies, to make a method to apply this system, "he said. And for those of us who always forget to ask our neighbors to water our plants when we go away, hopefully this means the end of returning home from a trip to find our favorite flowers have died.1.What is the article mainly about?A. The world’s food supply will be increased.B. Plants better survive droughts.C. The Arabidopsis is resistant to droughts.D. Vinegar could be used to fight droughts.2.It was discovered that acetate can .A. be used by farmers to replace soilB. only be produced by the ArabidopsisC. help plants survive dry conditionsD. be used to improve poor soil3.What are the target plants of the experiment?A. all breeding species.B. wheat and Arabidopisis.C. rice and maize.D. rapeseed and Arabidopisis.4.Jong Myong Kim’s experiment of trying out the method .A. can make people’s trips pleasantB. turned out a worldwide successC. is as simple as pouring vinegar over the plantsD. appeals to many flower growing companies【文章大意】本文属于科普类文章。

and survive.“Cuba is a very exciting place for us to look at all these different processes,” says Christopher Raxworthy. He is in charge of one department of the museum and a cocurator of the exhibit.“But that also creates great challenges for conservation.”Climate change is threatening Cuba’s wildlife. Some species may even disappear. The country is taking steps to protect its plants and animals. But AMNH hopes ¡Cuba! will show how important the country’s natural world is to everyone.1.What can be known about ¡Cuba!?A.It shows Cuba’s rich biodiversity.B.It compares the islands on the does Christopher find challenging?A.To organize the exhibition.B.To observe plants and animals.C.To study the unique species of Cuba.D.To protect the native wildlife of Cuba.4.What is the best title last November at the age of 14,the couple, who are in their sixties and have had dogs for forty years of married life, were devastated.Today there is another dog Ollie at their home.He came to them after the death of his 81-year-old owner and they already “love him to pieces”.It’s a simple enough equation — bereaved (丧失亲人的) owner plus bereaved pet equals comfort and new joy for both parties. The benefits of animal companionship for older people are now well documented;it is the practicalities that often prove the stumbling block. This month Dr June McNicholas,a health psychologist at Warwick University, will carry out a study which aims to identify those factors that may prevent the elderly from keeping pets and which suggests possible solutions.“Old people with pets are generally more active,” she says.“Obviously, walking a dog is good exercise and can also be a way of preserving social contacts or making new friendships, but even just getting up and down to see to the cat or going to the shops for food is better than nothing.Research has also found that those who have animals are likely to keep their homes warmer in winter and to feed themselves more regularly.Self-care is often tied in with pet care, which is especially important for those who live alone.”In an earlier project McNicholas studied the role of animals in helping people widowed (寡居的) after long marriages.Among 200 subjects, she found that symptoms of uncontrolled tearfulness and feelings of hopelessness and helplessness were all lowered among pet owners.McNicholas says,“In the early stages, the animal was a continuing link with the loved one.The bereaved often want to talk about the person they’ve lost, but other people don’t,so instead they talk to the dog, which responds to the name.We have no way of knowing whether animals are actually sympathetic, but they respond to changes in behaviour and body language in a way that gives comfort.5.What does the underlined word “devastated” in Paragraph 1 mean?A.Grateful.B.Relaxed.C.Sorrowful.D.Confused.6.What does McNicholas mainly talk about in Paragraph 3?A.The benefits of keeping a pet.B.The troubles pet owners face.C.Factors preventing people having pets.D.Ways of handling old people’s loneliness.7.What did McNicholas’s earlier study find?A.Pets often show their owners sympathy.B.Pets can respond to their owners’ needs.C.Pets serve as their owners’ spiritual guide.D.Pets can help their owners with their sadness.8.What is the best title for the text?A.Get along well with your new petB.You are never too old to have a petC.Start your later life with a new hobbyD.Help older people live fully and happily二、完形填空There’s a tiny town called Waterford in Eastern Ohio.Every other year something very1 happens Florence. Some were small;some were large. Most states had their own government, laws and money.During the Middle Ages, five city states became very rich and powerful. For example,Venice became rich from its trade with the Far East, the Mediterranean and the rest of Europe.Banks in Florence lent money to businesses and governments all over Europe. There was great competition between the city morning.1 But now I am definitely in the “I Love Mondays” camp. Here’s what I’ve found that works:Start Monday morning with your Sunday night routine. When you get ready to exercise, you warm up first.2 Get everything you need for the morning ready to go.Then consider a special “Sunday Night Only” winding down ritual (固定方式).It might be tea and a favorite TV show,or a long hot bath.Whatever it is,enjoy this Monday morning warm-up,and consider turning in a little earlier than you’re used to.3 Turning in a little early Sunday night can help with getting up a little early Monday morning. When you have a little extra time in the morning, you can gently settle into the day and keep that weekend feeling of ease as you start your new week.Find a theme for the week.Every Monday,I post an inspiring quote or saying on the wall. These are intentional! Each week,as part of my Sunday night winding down time,I consider what I’d like to focus on in the coming week, and look for a quote that’s a good fit to reinforce (加强) it.4 Look at the week’s tasks as opportunities instead of problems. What are you excited about for the new week?5 What’s been hanging over your head undone from last week?Take a look at the week ahead and highlight a few things that you can reasonably accomplish. When you are intentionally creating a life you love,Mondays begin to feel like a beautiful new start!A.Get up early enough to start slowly.B.What a waste of a perfectly good evening!C.What problem-solving opportunities do you have?D.Consider Sunday nights your warm-up for Monday.E.Have them in clean, working order and a convenient location.F.It can be a word or whatever inspires you for the week ahead.G.The work is the same either way,but our attitudes are within our control.Ⅲ.书面表达假定你是李华,计划本周末和同学一起去河边植树。
