Every year, we celebrate many special days —Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and New Year’s Day. In some countries, there is a special day for playing tricks on others. In North America and parts of Europe, this day is known as Ap ril Fool’s Day, and is celebrated on April 1st.
Many people believe that the French started April Fool’s Day. Centuries ago, New Year’s Day in Europe was April 1st. In 1582, the calendar changed and King Charles IX of France moved it to January 1st.
Some people did not like this, and chose to keep April 1st as New Year’s Day. Many called these people "April fools"and played jokes and tricks on them. Over time, April 1 became a day to have fun in France. It then spread to England and Scotland, and later, to North America.
On April Fool’s Day, jokes are common. In the United States, for example, a person may move a friend’s clock ahead one hour, or change the sugar and salt. In Scotland, April Fool’s Day lasts for two days. The second day is called "Taily Day"—for one’s "tail". On this day, people might secretly put a sign saying "kick me"on a person’s back or behind. Other countries have their own "Fool’s Day". In Spain and Mexico, people play tricks on each other on December 28. In India, it happens on March 31. On Lunar New Year’s Eve on Feb 18, 2015, Beijing had a good day. PM2. 5 levels were below 50. However, the nice day ended with firework celebrations at night.
In the first hour after the start of the celebration, PM2. 5 levels rose to 500 in certain parts of the city, with the average across the city around 400.
According to the China National Environmental Monitoring Center, on Lunar New Year’s Day, air pollution reached "dangerous levels"in 201 Chinese cities, because of fireworks, with more than 40 of them seeing "serious pollution". Do you have bad teeth but afraid to visit a dentist? You are not alone. In fact, about 10 percent of the population have anxiety (焦虑) about trip to the dentist, the Guardian reported. Now scientists in Japan believe they are closer to finding an answer.
“I found that the so und of drilling (钻) can cause anxiety in patients.”Hiroyuki Karibe, from Nippoon Dental University in Tokyo, said to the Guardian.
Karibe divided volunteers into two groups according to how much they were afraid of visiting the dentists: low-fear group and high-fear group. He then scanned (扫描) their brains while playing them different sounds, including dental drilling.
People in the high-fear group were anxious. For them, Karibe saw a strong response (反应) in parts of their brains. This part may play a role in learning and remembering the sounds of the dental instruments.
“Anxious patients were four times more likely to experience pain than non-anxious patients,” Martin Tickle, a professor at Manchester University, told the Guardian.
Luckily, there are some ways that can help you get over the fear of visiting a dentist. Go to that first visit with someone you trust. Relax while in the dentist’s chair, for example, put your headphones in and listen to some music.
However, if you pay more attention to your teeth, you can keep the dentist away. Here are some helpful trips to follow. You need to be careful about what you eat and drink. Eat lots of vegetables, but not too much sugary fruit. Drink water instead of soda. And don’t forget to brush your teeth at twice a day!

This is a tale of two friends --- one is blind, the other has no arms. On their own, the two are “disabled”. But together, they are a powerful team that has changed part of their village in North China’s Hebei Province into a rich, green forest. Let’s meet the story of 53-year-old Jia Haixia and Jia Wenqi!
Their story began in 2000, when Haixia, who was already blind in his right eye, lost his left one after an illness. Wenqi lost his arms in an accident when he was just three. Neither could find a job, so the two decided to team up. They rented some poor land and began to plant trees. In return, the local officials paid them a small fee. Haixia and Wenqi never imagined that they would end up creating an environmental paradise. Their forest now has over 10,000 trees, hundreds of birds and many other wild animals. In addition, it saves the village from river flooding during the rainy season. When the friends work together, they focus on their strengths not their disabilities. Their day begins at 7 a.m. when the sightless Haixia carries Wenqi across the river to get to their worksite. Since they cannot afford to buy young trees to plant, the two use branches from existing trees. Haixia climbs to the tree-top and with Wenqi’s direction, selects the perfect branch. He then digs a hole and carefully plants it. Finally Wenqi waters the area.
Though hard-working, the men don’t make much money. But as Wenqi puts it,“We stand on our own feet, so the fruits of our work taste sweeter.”
Neither Haixia nor Wenqi cares about money. Together, they already have everything they need --- a perfect pair of eyes, two strong hands, and the best friendship in the world!
