How to deal with Rhetoric in English TranslationChapter One The Introduction of RhetoricWhat is rhetoric? Rhetoric, according to Longman Modern English Dictionary, is the art or science of communication in words. The study of how to express oneself effectively, generally speaking, is the main concern of rhetoric.We all know that language is the means of communication of man. But man is confined by many factors while applying this means of communication. These factors may be classified into linguistic factors and non-linguistic factors. Linguistic factors refer to the rules which concerning the language itself such as grammar. People must follow these rules in speaking and writing, otherwise they would not understood well; on the other hand, non-linguistic factors refer to the speaker’s or the writer’s wood, age, position, occupation and education etc. These aspects of audiences should be considered when speaking or writing. All the factors mentioned above contribute a lot to effectiveness, which reveals itself mainly in appropriateness and accuracy. In appropriateness, words and sentence patterns one chooses should suit them while speaking or writing. For example, adults should not use the language of children; teachers should not use vulgar language with their students. Meanwhile one has to pay close attention to the audience’s age, position, occupation and education etc. So one should vary one’s tone and way when speaking or writing to a different audience. In addition, we also consider the words and sentence patterns one chooses while speaking or writing should suit the communication occasions. For instance, on diplomatic occasions one’s wording should be formal and elegant; when at home one needn’t care so much about wording--- he might speak or talk more freely and informally; at academic conferences technical and specialized words are often used; while at parties people prefer humorous and witty conversations. In accuracy we should care that the words and sentence patterns chosen to express one’s ideas, feelings and intentions should be both grammatically correct and contextually proper. Otherwise misunderstanding or ambiguity will occur. For example, a student complained about the poor service and long queue in the dining hall in his English composition and expressed his worries like this: “Now eating has become a problem.”Obviously he made a mistake in diction. What he really intended to say is that “dining” has become a problem.From the above examples we can see that effective communication is based on precise and appropriate choice of words, sentence patterns and figures of speech etc. In other words, rhetoric is choice of linguistic means and choice of expression. So in sense we may say that rhetoric is “choice”. Rhetoric is not a kind of languagebeautifier, as is the view held by many English learners, but falls into language itself.There are various ways of using words figuratively. They are called figures of speech. Among the most common of them are:1.SimileIt is a comparison between two distinctly different things and the comparison is indicate by the word “as” or “like”.2.MetaphorIt is a kind of rhetoric. In the use of metaphor, we usually denote one thing refer to another with a similar quality. And it is an implied comparison, not expressed with the word “as” or “like”.3.PersonificationIt is to treat a thing or an idea as if it were human or had human qualities.4.MetonymyIt is substituting the name of one thing for that of another with which it is closely associated.5.SynecdocheSynecdoche refers to substitute a part for the whole or the whole for a part in rhetoric.6.EuphemismIt is the substitution of a mild or vague expression for a harsh or unpleasant one.7. IronyIt is the use of words which are clearly opposite to what is meant, in order to achieve a special effect.8.Overstatement and understatementIn overstatement the diction exaggerates the subject, and in understatement the words play down the magnitude or value of the subject.9.Transferred epithetA transferred epithet is a figure of speech where an epithet (an adjective or descriptive phrase) is transferred from the noun it should rightly modify to another to which it does not really belong. Generally, the epithet is transferred from a person to a thing or idea.10.OxymoronIn oxymoron apparently contradictory terms are combined to produce a special effect.Chapter Two Basic Principle of TranslationTranslation is an art, a bilingual art. Like painting, translation enables us to reproduce the fine thought of somebody, not in colors, but in words, in words of a different language. It is no easy job, not so easy as it is supposed. Do not think thatany one who knows a foreign language, say English, can invariably translate and translate well. No, not at all. Many can speak and write English well, but they cannot translate. And this difficult is greatly multiplied by the wide difference in vocabulary and sentence construction between the Oriental and Occidental languages.Translation is difficult to be mastered. Many experienced translators complain that they have had insurmountable difficulties in their work. Indeed, few people can translate a book without more or less making mistakes. Very few translated works can be recommended and taken as models. Strange to say, or is rather easy for one to translate an article from Chinese into English than to translate an article from English into Chinese, if one’s English is good enough to do translation work.As we know, translation is a representation or recreation in one language of what is written or said in another language. Strictly speaking, translation is a kind of science because it has a whole set of rules governing it and certain objective laws to go by in the process of translating just as other sciences do. From an artist point of view, translation, certain skills and technique are needed in order to attain clearness of style, and fluency in language.English and Chinese are two entirely different languages. Each has an individual and distinct system. On the one hand, there are some similarities between the two languages, as in the word order of subject and predicate and that of transitive verb and object. On the other hand, there are lots of dissimilarities between them both I morphology and in syntax. Because of this, we have to be familiar with both languages, especially with the wide difference in vocabulary, grammatical relations and sentence construction between there two languages.Translation, like painting, enables us to reproduce the fine thought of an author, not in colors, but in words of a different language. A translator must be quite at home in the two languages concerned and quite familiar with their characteristics, similarities and differences. He must have a thorough understanding of the original, its artistic features and the historical situation in which it was written. At times even a word or phrase takes much time to establish in translation. Yanfu once said: “It often takes as ling as ten days or even a full month to establish a term.” This is the common experience all veteran translators have shared. So translation requires patience and skillful treatment and various sorts of techniques.Whoever has a mastery of the art of translation can certainly produce fine translations. Those who know nothing about translation theory and techniques will never be able to turn out any satisfactory work. It is because translation is not only a science with its own peculiar laws and methods but also an art of representation and recreation.In his talk on literary translation published in 1954 Guo Moruo pointed out, “Translation is creative work. Good translation is as good as writing and may be evenbetter than it. Sometimes translation is more difficult than writing. A writer must have experience in life, but a translator has to experience what the writer has experienced. At the same time, a translator must not only be proficient in his mother tongue but also have a very good foundation in a foreign language. Therefore, translation is not easier than writing at all.” His analysis is really penetrating!The standard of translation is the criterion / yardstick of translating practice and the scale to balance whether the target article is good or not.We know the standard “信”, “达”, “雅” by Yanfu. But in order to avoiding to use this old expressing way, here I think the standard of translation should be summarized as the words “faith” and “smooth”.The “faith” is meant to be faith in the content of original works. The translator should express the content of original works completely and precise, and it has not to be any appearance of changing, deforming, omitting and deleting. The content is usual the facts to illustrate, reason to explain, view to describe in the works and the author wants to express the thought, concept, position and the emotion he / she leaked in the process of illustration, explanation and description.The “faith” also means to keep the styles of the original that, which includes the nation style, the era style, the writing style, and the language style of author. They can not be changed and broken freely, and they also can not be taken place by others. For instance, if the style of original text in colloquial one, it can not be translated into writing one. If it is vulgar one, it can not be translated into elegant one if it is western one, it can not be translated into eastern one. In a word, the target text must follow the original text, and show the readers the real colors. As Luxun said “翻译必须保存原作丰姿。

Therefore, when translating English news headlines, we should first understand the characteristicsof the headlines and apply translation strategies in a targeted way. Characteristics of English News HeadlinesConcise and Vivid ExpressionThe purpose of a headline is to give a summary of what is going on in the news so that readers can quickly get to the heart of the story. In order to meet the requirements of the popularity of English news headlines, short and simple words are often used. This can not only save the space of the newspaper, but also enable more readers to understand English news and improve the readability and practicability of English news. So, acronyms appear frequently in English news headlines, especially in the description of organizations. Appropriate shortening of some common words in news headlines can not only reduce the length of news headlines, but also enhance their novelty. Abbreviations are roughly divided into two categories. One category includes shortened words. For example, “expo” is the abbreviation of “exposition”. In order to keep close to social life and grasp the pulse of the times, news reports need to create a large number of newwords to spread new ideas and fashions, so as to attract public attention. Therefore, frequent use of new wordsis a prominent feature of English news, which usually includes two types of situation (Xu, 2018). In onesituation, a new meaning is derived from an old word, such as “clone”, which means “copy” now. In the othersituation, a new word is purely created, such as “computernik”, which means someone addicted to computers.News reports have a high requirement for information dissemination and effectiveness, so words often change their part of speech (such as from a noun to a verb, or vice versa). For example, the headline“Cooperative Operation Profits Farmers” has changed “Profit” from noun to verb, making the headline moreconcise and clear. In addition, English news has wide audience, so a large number of easy-to-understand wordsare used to enhance the overall accessibility of the headlines. Among them, using proper nouns and specialnames to refer to specific meanings is one of the ways to improve the popularity of the headlines. For instance,it is common to use the name of a building or place to refer to a country, such as “the White House” for theUnited States and “the Louvre” for France.Distinct Grammatical FeaturesThe grammar of English news headlines is different from that of normal use and has its unique characteristics. The news story that appears in the newspaper has already happened; so according to the basicrules of grammar, it needs to be expressed in the past tense. But the use of past tense deviates from the essentialcharacteristic of news. In order to enhance readers’ experience of news events, editors should abide by thespecial principle of “news present tense”, and use the simple present tense to formulate news headlines (Zhu,2008).A news headline should be a complete sentence, but in order to be concise and highlight importantinformation, function words such as articles, auxiliary words, link verbs, conjunctions, and pronouns are oftenomitted from the headline on the premise of not affecting the expression of the main theme of the news. In thisway, the length of the headline is shortened to a large extent, so as to avoid procrastination and redundancy. Forexample, the headline “It’s Time to Organize Your Book” could be shortened to “Time to Organize YourBook” and the headline “Japan Is in Danger of Reform” could be shortened to “Japan in Danger of Reform”.Punctuation marks are auxiliary recording symbols of the written system, which can divide meaning groups, substitute words, emphasize information, and highlight the sense of reality (Zhang, 2020). Punctuationmarks can make news headlines simple and lively, leaving people with thinking space. Headlines focus onstructural clarity and often use three types of punctuation. The first is comma, which is used to replace theconjunction “and” to save space, such as in the headline “US, Japan Meet in Women’s World Cup”. Thesecond is dash, which is often used to quote a statement to make the headline more intuitive and clear. Forinstance, the headline “Next iPhone Update Will Let You Disable Intentional Slow Down—Tim Cook” meansthat Tim Cook says that next iPhone update will let you disable intentional slowdown. Applying this kind of puns in news headlines can increase their connotation and arouse readers’ interest. For example, the headline “Champagne Economy or Bubble Economy?” highlights the difficulty of maintaining production in France in the economic decline caused by champagne losses. And when headlines are created, champagne can be used to both illustrate economic losses and allude to the bubble economy. Pun can not only induce readers’ associations, but also add humor or irony to headlines.The second type is exaggeration, which can quickly attract the attention of readers and enhance the influence of the headline, causing readers’ imagination of news content. However, editors should highlight the essence of the matter when applying exaggeration so as to avoid overreaching. For example, after Watergate, people often use the word “Watergate” to describe similar political events, followed by “Monica Scandal” and “Korea Scandal”.The fourth type is alliteration and end rhyme. “Soldiers Salary Soars”, for example, is a headline with each word starting with an “S”. From the perspective of lexical meaning, “Rises” or “Goes High” can replace “Soars”, but the beauty of rhythm in the original headline will be lost. More importantly, it can stimulate the reader’s interest to continue reading.Method of Using Rhetorical DevicesAlthough news needs to be concise and accurate, distinctive headlines are a magic weapon to attract readers. The use of various rhetorical devices can make a news report sparkling. If the headline contains some rhetorical devices, such as puns, metaphors, and rhymes, the translation should also use the corresponding rhetorical devices, in order to achieve the same rhetorical characteristics as the original as much as possible. For instance, the headline “After the Booms, Everything Is Gloom” is translated by “一别繁荣,一片愁容”. “Boom” and “Gloom” form the end rhyme and the Chinese translation perfectly shows the rhyme feature of the original through “Rong” and “Rong” with the same pronunciation to form the end rhyme. Also, the two “yi” achieve the effect of alliteration, fully showing the rhetorical effect with a feeling of unity. As another example, the headline “A Bowl of Soup a Day Could Keep the Pounds at Bay” applies the pattern of an old saying “An Apple a Day Keeps Doctor Away”, achieving the rhyme effect. This translating method not only accurately conveys the intended meaning of the original headline, but also makes the news headlines more interesting.Conversion Between Positive and Negative Words In the process of translation, we should also pay attention to the different nature of words between countries and understand the context of the original news. For example, in the headline “The Chinese Market, a Bottomless Pit”, the phrase “A Bottomless Pit” in Chinese has a negative meaning. If we literally translate it into Chinese, the Chinese market will be described as derogatory. Through reading the content of the news, the phrase “A Bottomless Pit” comes from the mouth of the president of the famous sports brand Nike, which happened when he inspected Shanghai. After analyzing the context, it can be found that what he wants to express is that the market potential of China is great. 修辞语翻译课程5The Rhetoric and Translation in Advertising English广告英语的修辞特征与翻译广告语言一般具有口语化的倾向,但用词十分讲究。

在广告英语中,常运用比喻、拟人、夸张、重复、押韵、对比、双关、借代、排比等修辞手法。

这些修辞格的运用赋予了广告形象、生动、简洁、幽默、醒目等特点,其语言妙趣横生、耐人寻味,读起来朗朗上口、韵味十足,使广告拥有超群绝伦的吸引力、说服力、鼓动力,以诱发消费者兴趣,促成购买。

广告英语中修辞格的运用主要体现在以下几个方面。

1)明喻(Simile)明喻表示本体和喻体两种不同事物之间的相似关系,英语一般由like或as 来连接,汉语中常用“如”、“像”等词。

a) SaKura Bank is like a thriving saKura“樱花银行就如一棵茂盘的樱花树”。

这是一则有关日本樱花银行的广告,该银行被比作茂盘的樱花。

翻译时我们要将这种比喻传递出来。

这样就贴切自然地把树的形象和银行的业务发展结合起来,“原汁原味”,保留了“异国情调”,使广告语言新鲜、形象。

b)“Cool as a mountain stream! Cool as fresh Consulate.”“凉如高山溪流??爽似Consulate 香烟”。

美国生产的一种香烟。

加入薄荷剂,令人吸后清凉爽口。

c)“Moms depend on Kool-Aid like kids depend on moms.”妈咪依赖果乐Kool-Aid,就像孩子依赖妈咪。

饮料广告d)Featherwater:light as a feather “法泽瓦特眼镜——轻如鸿毛!”这是一则眼镜的广告,广告中将眼镜的重量用鸿毛作比。

戴眼镜的人当然愿意架在鼻梁上的眼镜越轻越好。

目前树脂镜片不仅不容易碎,而且比较轻,所以深受消费者的青昧。

翻译上述广告无疑要体现原文的修辞格,使修辞手法达到对等。

Newspaper headlines have its‘ own stylistic features in lexicology, grammar, the voice, rhetoric and so on. It is called ‗headline language‘ by news scholars. This paper emphatically analyzes the stylistic features of English newspaper headlines. According to these features, the author summarizes some Chinese translation skills. 对外政治话语中隐喻的功能及其英译摘要: 目前对隐喻翻译的讨论普遍聚焦喻体等值转换或意象投射等问题,模糊了隐喻认知与修辞隐喻的差异。

在综述隐喻的话语功能基础上,对党和国家领导人的发言和政府工作报告中所使用的隐喻及其对应译文进行较为深入的分析,认为政治话语中的隐喻具有阐释与劝说功能。

为了发挥政治话语中隐喻的对外阐释与说服功能,翻译应技巧性地选择相应的翻译策略,根据隐喻的功能采用直译、直译加注、转换喻体、换以明喻以及释译喻义等方法进行隐喻翻译,以便更好地提高对外话语的传播效果。

On Rhetorical Functions of Metaphor and its C-E Translation in Political DiscourseAbstract: Current studies on metaphor translation mainly focus on exploring how conceptual mapping facilitate the transfer of information and images from SL to TL without paying enough attention to metaphor's rhetorical function in target texts.After summarizing metaphor's discourse functions in previous rhetorical studies, this paper makes an in-depth analyses on metaphors in CPC leaders and government officials' speeches as and their translated versions.The paper claims that metaphors' role in facilitating the explication of political concepts and their persuasion power should be taken into account when choosing translation strategies.And in translation practice, such translation methods can be adopted as literaltranslation, translation plus sense, replacing the image, translation by simile, and interpreting the metaphorical meaning, so as to enhance the country's global munication effect.Keywords: politicaldiscourse metaphor explicationpersuasiveness translation strategies隐喻近年来成为翻译研究关注的一个热点问题。

作者旨在对王佐良译本进行分析,首先从翻译方法与技巧入手,再对翻译特点进行总结,以此剖析王佐良先生译本的独到之处。

The purpose of this paper is to explore the basic advertising knowledge, to explain features of advertising language.Key words: advertising rhetoriccommunicative translationreadership1、Generalization on advertisingAdvertising takes many forms, but in most them, language is a style of immediate impact and rapid persuasion. The point of an advertisement is to persuade you of the merits of a particular product or services, in order that you will take out some of your money.1.1 Functions of advertising:the marketing function, the communication function, the economic function, the social function, the education function.1.2 Advertising objectives :The objectives of any advertising are to create awareness, to develop comprehension1.3 Advertising elements: A full print advertising is generally composed of two parts, namely, the verbal part including headline, body copy and slogan; the non-verbal part consisting of trademark and illustration.2、The rhetoric in English and Chinese advertisingThe main advantage of the use of rhetoric in advertising lies in its superior ability to communicate abstract features or benefits of the product and to communicate information about intangible services.2.1 The rhetoric in English advertising2.1.1Phonetic Rhetoric:Phonetic rhetoric mainly consists of onomatopoeia, alliteration and rhyme1) Onomatopoeiae.g.: Zoom! The value and the quality of the watch are fully implied in just the words of a metaphor.)2) Simile.e.g.: Featherwater : light as a feather (spectacle lens)3) Metonymy.e.g.: Wash the big city out of hair.4) Pun.e.g.: Spoil yourself and not your figure. ( the weight ?Cwatcher ice cream ad.)5) Personification.e.g.: With 52 issues, they will be thinking of you week after week.(Newsweek magazine)6) Hyperbole.e.g.: We’ve hidden a full of vegetable where you’d never expect in a pie.(Biscquick vegetable pie)7) Repetition.e.g.: You can’t Xerox a Xerox on a Xerox.(Xerox copier)8) Contrast.e.g.: Cancer is often curable. (青岛牌电视)Nevertheless, Chinese advertisements possess their own distinctive characteristics.1) The four/seven - Character Advertisement黑白分明,表现出众. (白加黑感冒片);2) The Couplet Advertisement摘取天上彩霞,装点人间广厦. (珠海“镭射玻璃”) ;3、The Translation of Rhetoric in English and Chinese Advertising3. 1 Principle Governing Advertising Translation1) Theories of TranslationFaithfulness, expressiveness and elegance are more applicable to literary translation. Lu Xun put forward a four- character principle of translation, which is called faithfulness and smoothness.2) Communicative TranslationProfessor Peter Newmark holds that :“??all art is to a greater or less extent allegorical ,figurative ,metaphorical and a parable and therefore has a communicative purpose. (Newmark 1982 : 45) . In my opinion ,any principle adopted in advertisingtranslation is evaluated by whether the translated text ultimately helps promote sales.3.2 Specific Techniques Applied to the Translation of Rhetoric in Advertising3.2.1 The English - Chinese Advertising Translation1) Rhetorical Translation (1) E. g.: Kodak is Olympic color. 柯达- - 奥林匹克的色彩.
