Fear gripped(吸引;抓紧)the soldier as he saw his lifelong friend fall in battle. Caught in a trench(战壕)with continuous gunfire over his head, the solider asked his officer if he might go out into the no-man’s-land between the trenches to bring his fallen comrade back.
“You can go,” said the officer, “but I don’t think it will be worth it. Your friend is probably dead and you may throw your life away.” The officer’s advice didn’t matter, and the soldier went anyway. Luckily he managed to reach his friend, hoisted him onto his shoulder and brought him back to their trench. As the two of them tumbled in together to the bottom of the trench, the officer checked the wounded soldier, and then looked kindly at his friend.
“I told you it wouldn’t be worth it,” he said. “Your friend is dead and you are mortally wounded.”
“It was worth it, though, sir.” said the soldier.
“What do you mean by saying ‘worth it’?” responded the officer. “Your friend is dead.”
“Yes, sir,” the solider answered. “But it was worth it because when I got to him, he was still alive and I had the satisfaction of hear ing him saying, “Jim…, I knew you’d come.”
Many times in life, whether a thing is worth doing or not really depends on how you look at it. Take up all your courage and do something your heart tells you to do so that you may not feel sorry for not doing it later in your life.

Going green seems to be fad (时尚)for a lot of people these days. Whether that is good or bad, we can’t really say, but for the two of us, going green is not a fad but a lifestyle.
On April 22, 2011, we decided to go green every single day for an entire year. This meant doing 365 different green things, and it also meant challenging ourselves to go green beyond easy things. Rather than recycle and reduce our energy, we had to think of 365 different green things to do and this was no easy task.
With the idea of going green every single day for a year, Our Green Year started. My wife and I decided to educate people about how they could go green in their lives and hoped we could show people all the green things that could be done to help the environment. We wanted to push the message that every little bit helps.
Over the course of Our Green Year, we completely changed our lifestyle. We now shop at organic(有机的)stores. We consume less meat, choosing green food. We have greatly reduced our buying we don’t need. We have given away half of what we owned through websites. Our home is kept clean by vinegar and lemon juice, with no chemical cleaners. We make our own butter, enjoying the smell of home-made fresh bread. In our home office anyone caught doing something ungreen might be punished. Our minds have been changed by Our Green Year. We are grateful for the chance to have been able to go green and educate others. We believe that we do have the power to change things and help our planet.
29. What might be the best title for the passage?
A. Going Green.
B. Protecting the Planet.
C. Keeping Open-Minded.
D. Celebrating Our Green Year.
30.It was difficult for the couple to live a green life for the whole year because .
A. they were expected to follow others
B. they didn’t know how to educate other people
C. they were unwilling to reduce their energy
D. they needed to perform unusual green tasks
31. What did the couple do over the course of their Green Year?
A. They sold their home-made food.
B. They ignore others’ ungreen behavior.
C. They tried to get out of their ungreen habits.
D. They chose better chemical cleaners.
32. What can we infer(推断) from the last paragraph?
A. The government will give support to the green people.
B. The couple may continue their project in the future.
C. So me people disagree with the couple’s green ideas.
D. Our Green Year is becoming a national action.
D.
Let us begin by saying what does not cause our dreams. Our dreams do not come from "another world ". They are not messages from outside sources. They are not a look into the future, either.
All our dreams have something to do with our feelings, fears, longings, wishes, needs and memories. If a person is hungry, or tired, or cold, his dreams may include a feeling of this kind. If the covers on your body, such as a quilt or a blanket, have slipped off your bed, you may dream that you are sleeping on the ice or snow. The material for the dream you will have tonight is likely to come from the experience you have today.
So the subject of your dream usually comes from something that has an effect on you while you are sleeping (feeling of cold, discomfort, etc.) and it may also use your past experiences and the wishes and interests you have now. This is why children are likely to dream of fairies, older children of school examinations, hungry people of food, homesick soldiers of their families and prisoners of freedom.
To show you how this is happening while you are asleep and how your needs and wishes can all be joined together in a dream, here is the story of an experiment. A man was asleep and the back of his hand was rubbed with a piece of absorbed cotton. He would dream he was in hospital and his charming girlfriend was visiting him, sitting on the bed and feeling gently his hands.
There are some scientists who have made a special study of why we dream, what we dream and what those dreams mean. Their explanations of dreams, though a bit reasonable, are not accepted by everyone, but they offer an interesting approach to the problem. They believe that dreams are mostly expressions of wishes that do not come true. In other words, dreams are a way of having your wishes carried out.
33. From the first two paragraphs we learn that our dreams _________.
A.are man’s curious look into the future
e from only one place but not another
C.are connected with our daily life to a certain degree
D.send some messages from the outside world

A.is of little use
B.is considered interesting, but unreasonable
C.has been proved by the findings of their studies
D.is providing a possible means

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
选项中有两处为多余选项。
Both men and women are living longer these days in industrialized countries.
36 In general, they can expect to live six or seven years more than men. One reason for this is biological.
One important biological factor(因素) that helps women live longer is the difference in hormones between men and women. 37 Between the ages of about 12 and 50, women produce hormones that are involved in fertility (生育能力). These hormones also have a positive effect on the heart and blood flow. In fact, women are less likely to have high blood pressure or to die from heart attacks.
38 They help the body defend itself against some kinds of infections. This means that women generally get sick less often and less seriously than men. The common cold is a good example: women, on average, get fewer colds than men.
39 Scientists are still not exactly sure how genes influence aging, but they believe that they do. Some think that a woman’s body cells have a tendency (向) to age more slowly than a man’s. Others think that a man’s body cells have a tendency to age more quickly. 40
A. However, women, on average, live longer.
B. The biological factor plays an important part.
C. Women are also helped by their female genes.
D. The female hormones also protect the body in another way.
E. Recent research seems to support both of these possibilities.
F. Therefore, women are healthier than men and can live a better life.
G. Hormones are chemicals which are produced by the body to control various body functions.

作文参考范文
According to a recent survey, most high school students in our city appear to lack self-confidence. The reasons can be listed as follows.
The narrow range of interpersonal communication is one of the main reasons. The high expectation from parents is often said to be another cause. Also, there still exist some improper comparison and evaluation methods in many schools. It’s high time that something was done to solve the problem. Firstly, students should communicate more with others. Secondly, parents should pay more attention to their c hildren’s thoughts. Finally, schools should change their comparison and evaluation methods.
There is no doubt that these measures will help students build up their self-confidence as long as they are done properly.。
