Now most of the workers work from 9 am to 5 pm. However, according to the global Internet survey done by the UK Sleep Council, thesiesta(午睡)was the right idea all along. The UK Sleep Council called on the country'sbosses to end nine-to-five working in favor of more flexible hours. They believe what would really increase the workers' productivity is a nice afternoon nap, rather than those bonuses.
Forty-one percent of the 12,000 people who responded to the council's survey said they were most productive in the morning, while 38 percent said theyhit their stridein the evening. "This means most of them cannot fully pay attention to what they do in the middle of the day," said sleep expert Dr. Chris Idzikowskii. "We must conclude from this survey that the traditional nine-to-five working day does not suit most workers." He suggested that allowing workers to follow their natural sleeping habits would actually benefit employers by allowing them to expand their working hours and be more productive.
Fortunately, being a college lecturer, I don't have to go to work everyday. I only work three days a week, but during the three days I work really long hours and have no time for a little siesta. I'm usually so tired and sleepy in the afternoon, which really affects thevitality(活力)of my classes.
I think Dr. Chris Idzikowskii's idea is worthwhile. When people have flexible working hours they could reach their highest productivity. On top of that, flexible working hours mean thatpeople don't have to work all at the same time. That way we could avoid traffic jams. Therefore, it's really killing two birds with one stone!

D. Working in a relaxing way.

7. Why does the author support Dr. Chris Idzikowskii's idea?
A. It could solve most of the traffic problems.

C. He thinks the idea can benefit the society.
D. It allows him to work for fewer hours.

Whena person in the United States gets the COVID-19 vaccine (疫苗), the person receives a small piece of paper called a “COVID-19 Vaccination Record Card”.
It is a piece of paper with the logo of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, and the name and date of the vaccine. Because it is so simple, it could be easy to fake.
Many people in theU.S.are still unsure about getting the vaccine. As universities, workplaces and other places are requiring proof of vaccination, some people are now buying fake vaccination cards without getting a shot.
The Associated Press reports that students and teachers at universities around theU.S.are worried about fake cards. Sellers are using social media apps like Instagram to advertise fake vaccination cards. The prices range from $25 to $200. The AP notes that many college students seem interested in buying the cards. On the site Reddit, one person wrote, “I need one, too, for college. I refuse to be a guinea pig.”
It is reported that more than 700 universities and colleges require proof of vaccination. Most schools simply ask their students to take a photo of their card and send it to a school website. Benjamin Mason Meier is a professor at theUniversityofNorth CarolinaatChapel Hill, UNC. He studies international health policy. He said, unlike some countries, theU.S.is not using a digital system to record vaccine status. He said theU.S.is depending on “aflimsypaper card”, and students have told him they knew of others who had used fake vaccination cards. Rebecca Williams also works at UNC. She is a researcher at the school’s Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. She said she was not surprised that people were worried about fake vaccination cards. “This is why I think the development of a reliable national digital vaccine passport app is very important,” she said.
There is a law that should prevent people from making false vaccination cards. If someone uses the CDC logo
without permission, they can be lined and punished by up to five years in prison. The U.S. Department of Justice recently charged a person inCaliforniawith making fake vaccination cards.
College students who already have the vaccine are criticizing those who would rather spend money to buy a fake than get a free shot. Maliha Reza is an electrical engineering student atPennsylvaniaStateUniversity, She called those students “dumb”. “I’m angry about that,” she said. “Like, there is more anger than I could describe now.”
8. Why do some college students buy fake vaccination cards?
A. They are easy to get.
B. Many Americans are still uncertain about getting the vaccine.
C. Students have an interest in the fake vaccination cards.
D. To get a vaccine shot is expensive.

B. Developing a reliable national digital vaccine passport app.
C. Using a digital system to record vaccine status.

Japan's prime minister encouraged the decision to ban viewers, even family members, by issuing a state of emergency order in Tokyo earlier this month in response to rising COVID-19 case numbers.
From the perspective of sports psychologists, an Olympics without fans is a real-life science experiment that is helping researchers and clinicians to comb through the true impact of a crowd of fans on its players—and on viewers at home. The strange circumstances under which the games are held may place unexpected pressure on
some athletes. On Tuesday, superstar gymnast Simone Biles dropped out of the women's team event, telling teammates and reporters she wasn't in the right “headspace” to compete. “It's been really stressful this Olympic Games. There are a lot of different variables going into it,” Biles told the Washington Post.
The 2020 Summer Olympics bears similarities and differences to other major sporting events without viewers. The English Premier League supplemented (增加) game broadcasts with crowd noise from the soccer video game FIFA 20, mixed with game audio in real time. A Taiwanese baseball team and German soccer team began populating stands with cardboard cutouts of fans, and the trend caught on internationally.
Jamey Houle, the lead sports psychologist for Ohio State University Athletics and a former Al-American gymnast, says competitive athletes are trained in visualization— imagining performing a certain action or motion, such as doing a roundoff back handspring in gymnastics. Without moving a muscle, players using visualization can solidify neural (神经的) connections and activate their motor cortex (皮层). To visualize most effectively, Houle says, athletes working with sports psychologists will try to simulate as closely as possible the conditions of actual gameplay. Empty stadiums may thus have a measurable impact on players' performance. This phenomenon is grounded in a psychological concept called “social facilitation”, referring to a change in a person's performance that occurs when others are around compared to when a person is alone.
12. What caused Biles to drop out of the women's team event?
A. The poor physical condition.
B. The absence of the audience.
C. The fiercely competitive event.
D. The influence of crowds of fans.
13. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A. The Taiwanese baseball team is a success.
B. The tendency mentioned is popular among some sporting events.
C. The 2020 Summer Olympics is stricter in preventing the pandemic.
D. The crowd noise plays a leading role in the English Premier League.
14. How does Houle explain the impact of empty stadiums on players' performance?
A. By doing a roundoff back handspring.
B. By simulating the conditions of actual gameplay.
C. By using the concept called social facilitation.
D. By changing the viewers of a player.
15. What message does the author mainly convey in the text?
A. Athletes should be trained in visualization.
B. Audience should be admitted to the Olympics.
C. Social facilitation is helpful to sporting events.
D. Viewers present may influence players' performance.

选项中有两项为多余选项Why is it that we always seem to pick the slowest line in a supermarket or store? Basically, the reason is simple: the chances are against us. To explain, imagine that youare in a store where there are three lines.____16____If there are more lines, your chances of getting into the speediest queue are even less.
Interestingly, some people have come up with theories and formulas to calculate this kind of thing.___17___A pioneering queuing theorist was an engineer named Erlang. He wanted to figure out the best number of telephone operators to have at the telephone exchange in the early 1900s. Taking into consideration the average number of phone calls in an hour and the average call length, Erlang came up with formulas to determine the best number of operators that should be on duty at any given time.____18____On top of that, his work established the basis for queuing theory, which became a new branch of mathematics.
The theories first invented by Erlang are still used today in a variety of commercial settings, including call centers and traffic engineering.____19____While there are many options available regarding lining up, it appears that a snaking-line approach—where people stand in a single line and wait for the next available clerk—is the most efficient.____20____Research shows that this option is about three times faster than using separate lines, which is the approach that is most commonly used but not that efficient for anyone in a rush.
A. This is the method that most banks use.
B. People who do this type of research are generally known as queuing theorists.
C. His formula was soon accepted by telephone companies, including the British Post.
D. You only have a one-in-three chance of picking the quickest line, so most likely you’ll be wrong.
E. The research he conducted even helps modern businesses provide satisfactory services to the public.
F. Businesses know just the tricks for distracting their customers from the long lines they’re waiting in.
G. Grocery stores try to have enough employees at checkout lines to get all customers through without delay.
