13、Y ou can't always predict(预测)a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Belyaev doesn't think that forgetting to check the weatherforecastbefore going out should cause you to get wet. That's why he created Lampbrella, a lamp post(柱)with its own rain-sensing(感应)umbrella.
The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia. “Once, I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain. I thought it would be fit to have a canopy(伞篷) built into a street lamp,” he said.
The Lampbrella is a post-looking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a built-in electric machine which can open or close the umbrella. Sensors(传感器) then make sure that the umbrella offers walkers shelter(遮蔽)whenever it starts raining.
Besides the rain sensor, there's also a 360° moving sensor on the street lamp which finds whether anyone is using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.
According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a rather low speed, in order not to hurt the walkers. Besides, it would be fixed on the ground to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people. Being fixed at 2 meters off the ground, it would only be a danger for the tallest of walkers.
While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production, Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and believes that his creation could be fixed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.

16、I used to watch him from my kitchen window. He seemed so small as he played through a crowd of tall boys on the playground. The school was across the street from our home and I would
often watch the kids as they played during break.
I remember the first day when I saw him playing basketball. He ran circles around the other kids. He managed to shoot jump shots from their heads and into the net. The big boys always tried to stop him but no one could.
One day, I met him and asked him why he practiced so much. Without a moment of hesitation he said, "I want to go to college. The only way I can go is to get a scholarship. I am going to play college basketball. I want to be the best. My daddy told me if the dream is big enough, the facts don't count.
I watched him through those junior high school and into senior high school. Every week, he led his school team to victory
One day in his senior year, I saw him sitting in the grass with head in his arms. I walked across the street and sat down in the cool grass beside him. Quietly I asked what was wrong. "Oh, nothing," came a soft reply, "I am just too short." The coach told him that he would probably never get to play for a top ranked team-much less offered a scholarship. So she should stop dreaming about college.
He was heartbroken and I felt my own throat tighten as I sensed his disappointment. I asked him if he had talked to his dad about it yet. He told me that his father said those coaches were wrong. They just did not understand the power of a dream. He told him that if he truly wanted a scholarship and that nothing could stop him except one thing-his own attitude. On a sunny day of September, I sat with my friend in a well-known coffee shop in a neighboring town. As we enjoyed our coffee, a young man wearing glasses entered and sat at an empty table beside us. He called the waiter and placed his order, saying, “Two cups of coffee, one of them there on the wall.” We heard this order with rather interest and found that he was served with only one cup of coffee but he paid for two. When he left, the waiter put a piece of paper on the wall, saying “A Cup of Coffee”.
While we were still there, two other middle-aged men entered and ordered three cups of coffee, two on the table and one
on the wall. They had two cups of coffee but paid for three and left. This time also, the waiter did the same. He put a piece of paper on the wall saying, “A Cup of Coffee.” It was something special and perplexing for us. We finished our coffee, paid the bill and left.
After a few days, we had a chance to go to this coffee shop again. While we were enjoying our coffee, a poorly-dressed man arrived at the shop. As he seated himself, he looked at the wall and said, “One cup of coffee from the wall.” The waiter served coffee to this man as usual. The man had his coffee and left without paying.
We were amazed to watch all this, as the waiter took off a piece of paper from the wall and threw it into the dustbin. Now it was no surprise for us — what was happening was very clear. The great respect for the men in need shown by the residents(居民) of this town made our eyes in tears.

5.What can we infer from the passage?
A.The residents in this town were kind to the poor.

19、Let’s Do Something to Save Our Environment
It is recently reported that some rivers and lakes have dried up in South China. A lot of fishes died. The bottoms of the rivers and lakes have become grass land. The water is becoming less and less because of the bad weather.
So everyone should do something to save our environment. First, we should save every drop of water, such as turning off the taps after using it and recycling the water. For example, we can water the plants and clean the rest room with our used water. Second, we should save energy, such as less turning on the lights and turning off the lights when we leave;Do more walking, more bicycling and less driving and so on. Third, we should ask our government to control the pollution from the factories.
Let’s act now from everything to save our environment. Don’t let our tears be the last drop of water in the world!。
