13、Many people take running as a way to keep fit. They like to run in hot weather and enjoy the feeling of being wet through with sweat while running. Cold weather during winter months, with low temperatures and freezing cold winds, may keep many people from running in the open air.
However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance. Many runners might find it easier to run in winter than in hot weather.
Lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate is lower. And the body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather because dehydration levels are lower in winter than in warmer conditions.
John Brewer is a professor of applied sports science at ST. Mary’s University in L ondon. For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room where summer and winter weather conditions are recreated. The test subjects, were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions and their biological measurements were recorded and studied.
From the study, every movement runners make produces heat. The heat can be really damaging unless the body can lose it. One way in which people lose heat is by sweating. The body loses heat through droplets of sweet. The body also loses it by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin and it puts more stress on the heart, particularly in hot conditions because it’s much harder to lose heat when the outside environment is warm. As the result shows running in hot temperatures results in 6 percent higher heart rates.
When running in cold conditions, the body does not have to work hard to pump blood to the skin surface. Therefore, it requires less energy. The most important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Keep as dry as possible when exercising in low temperatures. Wear mittens on your hands instead of gloves. Wear more than one layer of clothing to keep sweat away from your skin. So don’t let winter weather keep you indoors. Simply get ready for the low temperatures and start running.

4.What should people wear while running in cold winter?

C.More clothing. D.More than one layer of clothing.
5.What’s the purpose of the passage?

14、Hi, everyone, my name is Isabella and I’m an artist and fashion designer. But today, I’m not here to specially talk to you about art or fashion. Today I want to talk to you about dreams and stories.
Did you know that 4-minute mile once thought to be impossible? It was something outside we can consider. But in 1954, a guy named Bannister achieved. 35 In the following two months, two other runners broke 4-minute record and in the following three years and 19 runners continued. And now, it’s common for an experienced runner to be able to run a mile under 4 minutes. It’s just that they didn’t think it was impossible any more.
So we should dream big. I have always to be encouraged to dream big. And I think when you’re very little and maybe don’t know any better it’s easier to do because there’s fearlessness before you become afraid of something. What did you want to be? A movie star, an actor or an astronaut. Maybe you didn’t achieve these dreams, as you got older. Because as you got older, you became afraid. It’s important to hold on your fearlessness just like a child. Because it’s fearlessness that helps us achieve our dreams.
I’m a big fan of what I called dream board. It’s just a piece of paper. There’re lots of pictures of things I would like to achieve and I put it in a place where I see it every day and that helps me. I started doing this a few years ago because I read a study in the US showing that people who made dream boards are more likely to achieve them. I know this may not be new or useful to everyone, but for me, the act of making my dream board every year and seeing it every morning really helps me.
Another thing that I really believe in is the world. I believe that once you have your dreams and begin to work for it, people start appearing in your life that can offer support and help… So let’s face it, there’s g oing to be a lot of challenges but to get through. I think courage is needed.
In conclusion, after all of this dreaming you have to work hard and put a lot of time into everything you’re doing
and have courage because there’s going to be a lot of difficult y but just remember the world is trying to help you. I know that I’m not the only one that has dreams. Everybody has dreams. Y ou just need to work hard to achieve them.
Thank you!

15、China covers large areas and has a great population. Different living habits have always been an interesting topic in the country. Recently, another difference between southern Chinese and northern Chinese became a hot one: the way people shop at markets.
People from southern China say that they always buy what they need for just one or two meals. It is normal for them to buy half of a Chinese cabbage, two potatoes and 0.25 kilograms of beef at a time.
However, one may be laughed at if he does this in the north. Instead, buying vegetables and meat enough for a week
is usual. Also, you can buy a small amount of fruit, such as a single apple or pear, each time in the south. Shop owners even help you peel and cut them. But shop owners in the north hardly offer such service. And many fruits are sold in baskets and boxes.
The difference could be due to the different weather.
Food can be kept for a long time in the north, as it is usually cold and dry there. Many northern Chinese have the habit of storing food, especially for the long winter. But the hot and wet weather in the south makes southern Chinese buy just enough food for one meal or one day, or else the food may go bad.

Arthur sat at the desk in his room, pencil in hand. He had to write a story for his English class by Friday. “I don’t know what to write about,” he complained to his dog Toby, who was asleep at his feet. Arthur was talkative when speaking to his friends, yet he had trouble finding words when he had to write.
By bedtime Arthur had drawn a picture of Toby smiling. He had drawn a tree with its branches blowing in the strong wind. He had also written a note asking his friend Lee to go to the movies on Saturday. But he had not written a single word of his story.
On Wednesday,Mrs. Solomon,Arthur’s English teacher, asked the class to turn in the first draft of their stories. His heart sinking,Arthur turned in the only work he had—the page with his name, the drawings and the note.
Arthur wasn’t surprised when Mrs. Solomon asked him to stay after class the next day. But he was surprised by what she said to him. “This is an attractive story,Arthur. The dog,the movie, the tree in the wind—I can’t wait to find out how they all fit together.”
“That isn’t my story,Mrs. Solomon,” Arthur admitted. “I haven’t been able to think of one yet.”
“Oh,_____________________” Mrs. Solomon replied,“Look at your note and the pictures and se e if a story comes to you.”
That night Arthur sat at his desk, and this is what he wrote:“One Saturday Mike went downstairs to meet his friend Julio at the cinema. It looked as if it might rain,so Mike carried his umbrella. Suddenly a big storm blew in,bending the trees. The noise of the wind sounded like the barking of Mike’s dog Toby. Toby really hated storms and barked whenever he wanted to be let inside. Then Mike realized that it wasn’t the sound of the wind. It was Toby. The dog was running after him down the busy street, barking. The sound was filled with blame. Mike felt guilty because he had left Toby outside. He turned and headed home with Toby running beside him. Mike let Toby in the door just as the rain started to pour down.”
