When the moon is round and full, the shadows(影子) of the moon mountains and the lines of the moon valleys sometimes seem to show a giant nose and mouth and eyes. At least, some people think so.If there were a man on the moon—instead of mountains and valleys that just look like theface of a man—what would he be like?He would not be like anyone you know. He would not be like anyone anybody knows. If the man on the moon were bothered by too much heat or cold the way Earth people are, he could not stay on the moon. The moon becomes very, very hot. It becomes as hot as boiling water. And the moon becomes very, very cold. It becomes colder than ice.Whatever part of the moon the sun shines on is hot and bright. The rest of the moon is cold and dark.If the man on the moon had to breathe to stay alive, he couldn’t live on the moon because there’s no air there. He’d have to carry an oxygen tank, as astronauts do. There’s no food on the moon, either. Nothing grows—not even weeds(grass). If the man on the moon liked to climb mountains, he would be very happy. There are many high places there, such as the raised land around the holes, or craters(火山口), of the moon. Some of these rims are as tall as Earth’s highest mountains. But if the man on the moon liked to swim, he would be unhappy. There is no water on the moon—just dust and rock. When you think of what it’s like on the moon, you may wonder why it interests our scientists. One reason is that the moon is Earth’s nearest neighbor—it is the easiest place in space to get to.Going back and forth between the moon and Earth, astronauts will get a lot of practice in space travel. Things learned on moon trips will be of great help to astronauts who later take long, long trips to some of the planets.Scientists are also interested in the moon because it has no air. The air that surrounds Earth cuts down the view of the scientists who look at the stars through telescopes. A telescope on the moon would give them a clearer, closer view of the stars.29. What is the reason why our scientists are interested in the moon?A.The moon is beautiful.B.The moon is different from the earth.C.The moon is the easiest place in space to get to and it has no air, unlike Earth.D.The moon is Earth’s nearest neighbor—it is the easiest place in space to get to.30. The underlined word “rim” in the Paragraph 8 means _________.A.ball B.hill C.height D. round edge31. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. The climate on the moon is quite different from that on the earth.B. Traveling between the moon and Earth will do much good to astronauts.C. There is some food and weeds on the moon, even though there’s no air.D. It is clearer to look at the stars through telescopes on the moon than on earth.32. What is the main thought of the passage?A. .A telescope on the Moon would help scientists have a clearer, closer sight of the stars.B. There may be human beings on the moon.C. If there were a man on the Moon, there would be many similarities between the man on theMoon and on the Earth.D. We can learn much from research on the MoonCAs societies develop, their members start to see things not so much according to what they need, but according to what they want. When people have enough money, these wants become demands. Now, it' s important for the managers in a company to understand what their customers want if they are going to develop effective marketing strategies (策略). There are various ways of doing this. One way at supermarkets, for example, is to interview customers while they're doing their shopping. They can be asked what they prefer to buy and then the results of the research can be studied. This provides information on which to base future marketing strategies. It' s also quite normal for top managers from department stores to spend a day or two each month visiting stores and mixing freely with the public, as if they were ordinary customers, to get an idea of how customers act.Another way to get information from customers is to give them something. For example, some fast food restaurants give away tickets in magazines or on the street that permit customers to get part of their meal for nothing. As well as being a good way of attracting customers into the restaurants to spend their money, it also allows the managers to get a feel for where to attract customers and which age-groups to attract.Another strategy used at some well-known parks such as Disneyland is for top managers to spend at least one day in their work, touting the park dressed as Mickey Mouse or something like that. This provides them with a perfect chance to examine the scene and watch the customers without being noticed.33. The text is designed for _______A. customersB. salesmenC. researchersD. mangers34. Which of the following can help managers get useful information?A. Visiting customers themselves.B. Giving customers free food on the street.C. Visiting parks as ordinary customers.D. Asking customers questions at supermarkets.35. What does the word "this" underlined in the last sentence refer to?A. Visiting Disneyland.B. Dressing up and walking around.C. Wearing attractive clothes.D. Acting Mickey Mouse.36. The main idea of the text is _________.A. how to do market researchB. how to develop marketing strategiesC. how to find out customers' social needsD. how to encourage customers to spend more moneyDThe need to feed a growing population is putting much pressure on the world's supply of water. With 97% of the world's water too salty to be drunk or used in agriculture, the worldwide supply of water needs careful management, especially in agriculture. Although the idea of a water shortage seems strange to someone fortunate enough to live in a high rainfall country, many of the world's agricultural industries experience constant water shortages.Although dams can be built to store water for agricultural use in dry areas and dry seasons, the costs of water redistribution are very high. Not only is there the cost of the engineering itself, but there is also an environmental cost to be considered. Where valleys(山谷)are flooded to create dams, houses are lost and wildlife homes destroyed. Besides, water may flow easily through pipes to fields, but it cannot be transported from one side of the world to the other. Each country must therefore rely on the management of its own water to supply its farming requirements. This is particularly troubling for countries with agricultural industries in areas dependent on irrigation. In Texas, farmers' overuse of irrigation water has resulted in a 25% reduction of the water stores. In the Central Valley area of southwestern USA, a huge water engineering project provided water for farming in dry valleys, but much of the water use has been poorly managed.Saudi Arabia's attempts to grow wheat in desert areas have seen the pumping of huge quantities of irrigation water from underground reserves. Because there is no rainfall in these areas, such reserves can only decrease, and it is believed that fifty years of pumping will see them run dry.37. From the first two paragraphs we learn that________.A. much of the world's water is available for useB. people in high rainfall countries feel luckyC. water can be easily carried through pipes across the worldD. the costs of water redistribution should be considered38. Which of the following is TRUE?A. The water stores in Texas have been reduced by 75%.B. Most industries in the world suffer from water shortages.C. Good management of water use resulted from the project in the Central Valley.D. The underground water in Saudi Arabia might run out in 50 years.39. What is most likely to be discussed in the paragraph that follows?A. Steps to improving water use management.B. Ways to reduce the costs of building dams.C. Measures to deal with worldwide water shortages.D. Approaches to handling the pressure on water supply.40. The text is mainly about________.A. water supply and increasing populationB. water use management and agricultureC. water redistribution and wildlife protectionD. water shortages and environmental protection第二节There is an English saying, "_____41_______." Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the effects it has on the human body._____42_____.Tests were carried out to study the effects of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. ______43_______. Laughter increases blood pressure, makes the heart beat quicker and makes people breathe deeper; it also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial._______44______. In one experiment doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programs. The group that tolerated (忍耐) the pain for the longest time was the group which listened to a funny program. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which diminishes both stress and pain.As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics, in which they help to improve their patients' condition by encouraging them to laugh. ______45_______.A. They have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making themsmile is enough to produce beneficial effects similar to those caused by laughterB. Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce the effect of pain on thebody.C. They have found that laughter really can improve people's health.D. Laughter is the best medicine.E. Laughter can prolong people’s life.F. It was found that laughter has similar effects to physical exercise.G. Although laughter helps cure the disease, doctors still can not put this theory into clinicpractice.四、英语知识运用第一节:完型填空(共20小题,每小题1.5分,共30分)Massive Open Online Courses are also called MOOCs. The kind of tragedy which knocks you out of yourself and tu rns your whole world upside down. A tragedy which also caus ed me to be out of work for three months. It was completely u nforeseen and I had no time to put together an out-of-office plan.I’ve worked at previous companies where this kind of tragedy would have been handled professionally; I would have been g iven the legally—required money and asked to leave. But at SAS Institute (an American developer of analytics software), my team stepped i n and filled in with no questions or hesitations. My work was n ot left undone. My clients were patient when those picking up the pieces of projects unrelated to them needed some time to get familiar with the work. My management and colleagues ch ecked on my family regularly. At last, my manager, my entire t eam and Human Resources Department helped me back to w ork at my own pace. They even changed my workspace over a weekend to better suit my personal needs before I even ca me back to work. You see, SAS creates a family. The special attention to emplo yee happiness and work/life balance makes that family possib le. The flexible work environment enables most employees to create a schedule that best suits their personal needs—whether it’s attending a school play or taking an aging parent t o the doctor. The Work/Life Office has a wealth of resources f or college planning, anger management, sorrow, etc. But, as you can see, it doesn’t stop there. Most employees believe th at SAS is their family. We rely on each other. We help each ot her succeed. We celebrate team successes. We hang out aft er work. Our kids play together. We laugh together and cry to gether.Sure, we have a lot of convenience benefits at SAS. But, what really makes a difference to me is the SAS culture that the ou tside world doesn’t always see: The balance. The companion ship. The management support. The family it allows me to ha ve.I’m so eager for others to see the side of SAS that I see every day.9. Over the course of three experiments on 35 young and healthy volunte ers, researchers in a new study measured brain activity durin g two continuous nights of sleep.Sasaki and colleagues performed a series of lab tests by stim ulating the left and then the right hemisphere(大脑的半球)with sounds. On the second night, there wasn’t any differe nce in reactions to tests between the left and right hemispher es, even during deep sleep. This suggests that there is a first-night-only effect specifically in one hemisphere of the brain during d eep sleep, the authors conclude. The way participants respon ded to the sleep lab tests points to the potential for the brain to be on high alert for danger during the first night in unfamiliar surroundings. While this may be bad news for business travel ers who regularly make brief overnight trips, it may not be as t roublesome for people who go away for longer periods of time , Sasaki added by email. “Frequent travel may lead to unrestf ul sleep,” Sasaki said. “But if you stay for a few days at the sa me place, your sleep might catch up.”Some birds have been found to actually sleep with one eye o pen and one side of the brain awake when they’re in a danger ous setting, and some marine mammals have similar abilities, the authors note. But the new study focuses on healthy volun teers but not people with insomnia or other sleep disorders, th e authors note.“The clinical implications haven’t been confirmed at the mome nt,” Finan, a psychiatry (精神医学)and behavioral health researcher said. “However, the level of specificity provided by these analyses could be an importan t first step in understanding what sleep disorders like insomni a(失眠) arise from, which is thought to be driven in many patients by continuing having a lot of worries.”13.What do the underlined words “may not be too far off the mark” in Paragraph 1 mean?A. may make senseB. may be ridiculous.C. may cause argumentsD. may be disturbing.14.What can we know from Paragraph 2?A. People are used to waking up and going to bed early when travelling.B. Business travelers usually have a brief sleep at night.C. It brings much trouble to those who stay far away from thei r homes.D. It takes time for people to adapt themselves to a new envir onment.15.According to Finan, the study is helpful in ________.A. finding out the root cause of sleep disordersB. telling the effect of worries on sleep disordersC. comforting as many patients with sleep disorders as possib leD. offering ways to free the patients from the suffering of slee p disorders第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

AFor many years, Bruce Bexler dreamed of going to the lands no human had explored and discovering rare, unknown species. That might sound like an impossible dream, but Bexler turned it into a reality. In December 2015, he, together with a team of Australian and American scientists, adventured into a rain forest on the island of New Guinea. They were the first people ever to enter the region. "As we were dropped on the ground by helicopter, we found no trails anywhere; it was really hard to get around," Bexler says.Within minutes of landing, the team spotted a black chicken-like bird. The scientists soon determined that the creature was a type of honeyeater-the first new bird species to be sighted on New Guinea in 60years. The honeyeater wasn't the only surprise for them. They discovered more than 40previously unknown plant and animal species. "We were like kids in a candy store," Bexler recalls. "Everywhere we looked, we saw amazing things we had never seen before." The newfound species didn't shy away from the scientists. Two long-nosed echidnas even let the visitors pick them up and take them back to camp to study them. Bexler thinks the animals weren't scared because they had never seen humans before. He explains, "This area gives scientists a place where they can study the behaviours of animals that have not yet learned to be afraid of people."Bexler and his team did not have enough time to study the area completely. "We just scratched the surface," Bexler says. "Anyone who goes there will come back with a mystery."21. Which word can best describe Bruce Bexler?A. Adventurous. B. Cautious. C. Optimistic. D. We can infer from Bexler's words in the last paragraph that____.A. the scientists have learned enough about the deep rain forestB. the area is likely to keep untouched in the futureC. more unknown plants and animals are to be discovered thereD. whoever goes there can uncover the mystery of the forestBOn February 3,1931 the peace of New Zealand's Hawkes Bay region was destroyed when the area was hit by the worst earthquake in New Zealand's history. At 10:46am on that summer's day,the quake hit with a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale(里氏震级).The centre of the quake lied some 15 to 20 kilometers north of the two main centers,Napier and Hastings. The quake lasted for two and a half minutes. Many people died in the earthquake.A fire broke out immediately after the quake. The fire started in a chemist's shop and spread quickly. Then the Fire Department in Napier came to help, but they were at a loss to control the fire as a result of losing their water supply. However, the water supply in Hastings, was still usable, allowing them to fight back against the fire. The force of the earthquake destroyed many of the city's famous landmarks(地标).Chunks of the coastline were thrown into the sea.Napier's Bluff Hill,a popular tourist spot, was completely destroyed and thrown into the waters below. Most of the major buildings in the city were completely destroyed.Roads and communications across the whole area were cut.People were afraid to enter their homes for days and found shelters at the local Motor Camp or on the beach. There were about 150 aftershocks(余震)in the 24 hours after the main shock.Over the next 2 weeks, there would be 525 such aftershocks.25.The worst earthquake took place in New Zealand__.A. at night B. in the morningC. at noon D. in the afternoon26.The firefighters in Napier failed to put out the fire probably because___.A. there was no usable waterB. they couldn't get close to itC. the flames spread too quicklyD. Mary was angry with herself. She said, "Am I losing it?"Emma Cleveland was teaching a class in mathematics at a college. She began to explain to the students how to solve a very difficult problem. She understood it very well. But to the students how to solve a very difficult problem. She understood it very well. But somehow, at that moment, she could not explain it. Emma said, "I must be losing it."Americans seem to have a lot of concerns about losing it. At least that is what you would think from hearing them talk. They use the expression when they feel they are losing control. It can mean losing emotional control, or losing the ability to do something,or losing mental powers.Word experts differabout how the expression started. Some believe it came from television programs popular in the 1980s. Others believe it began with psychologists who deal with how people think, feel and act."We Americans have many concerns about controlling oar lives. Perhaps we worry to much."one psychologists said. "In many situations, to say you are losing it eases the tensions。
