It comes without warning. It destroys people’s bodies. It kills almost 5,000 people around the world every day. This is AIDS – one of the most dangerous human diseases on the Earth.
December 1 is World AIDS Day. This year’s theme is “Getting to Zero: zero new HIV infections (传染), zero discrimination (歧视) and zero AIDS – related deaths”. AIDS stands for Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (获得性免疫缺陷综合症). It is caused by HIV – a virus (病毒). HIV travels in people’s blood and affects T cells (细胞), a type of cell that helps the body fight diseases. It may take years for the virus to harm enough T cells for the infected person to get sick and develop AIDS.
HIV and AIDS spreads through blood-to-blood contact, sharing needles or having blood transfusions. A mother with HIV can give the virus to her unborn baby. Unsafe sex can also spread AIDS.
Right now there is no cure (治疗) for HIV or AIDS. However, new treatments can help people with the virus live longer. The “AIDS Cocktail (鸡尾酒疗法)”, uses several drugs mixed together like a cocktail. It can help people with HIV to live longer.
On World AIDS Day, people wear red ribbons to show they care about HIV and AIDS. American artists thought up the red ribbons in 1991. They chose red because it is bold and visible – symbolizing (象征) passion, a heart and love.
How much do you know about AIDS?
Q: Can you get AIDS from shaking hands with someone who has AIDS?
A: No. The HIV virus cannot live outside the human body. So social contact such as hugging (拥抱) or kissing an AIDS patient cannot give you AIDS, either. Q: Can you get AIDS if mosquitoes (蚊子) bite (叮咬) you?
A: No. Mosquitoes do take blood from people but they do not exchange blood between people.
Q: If a dog bites someone with AIDS, and then bites you, can you catch
AIDS?

from people, and people cannot catch it from animals.

Hello, boys and girls! Do you know chemistry? Just like its name, chem-is-try, chemistry is an experimental science, which is interesting and full of challenge. Today I will tell you a simple experiment which can help you check up if there is any Vitamin C in the green vegetable. You don’t need any special chemicals, but a little amount of amylum (淀粉), boiling water, iodine (碘酒) and the vegetable you want to test.
Following are the steps of the experiment.
Firstly, put a little amount of amylum into a glass. If you don't have a glass, a bowl can be used instead.
Secondly, pour about one half bowl of boiling water into the glass, and at the same time mix them with a chopstick to help the amylum dissolve(溶解) into the water.
Thirdly, 2 or 3 drops of iodine are dropped into the glass and the color of the mixture(混合物) is changed into a special blue from milk white.
Fourthly, press the juice out of the green vegetables and drop it into the glass and mix them again. If the color changes back to milk white, it means there is some Vitamin C in the vegetable; if the blue color doesn't change, it means there isn't any Vitamin C in the vegetable.
That's it. So, you see, chemistry is not as difficult as you imagine and can be your helper sometimes.

I walk through the doors of my school as I watch hundreds of kids pass by. Many teenagers like me come here to study but every student is different from others. What makes us so different?
For example, some students are outgoing and they like to make friends with new people while others like reading and they are good at writing. The school library may be the best place they would like to go. There are also some students who keep optimistic all the time. They will face the challenges from life when they are in trouble.
Then, what makes me different? I like computer science very much. I also like playing computer games. It’s a good way to relax myself but spending too much on it is boring. And I like reading books, too. Especially the book about Steve Jobs who used to be the CEO of the Apple Company. To tell you the truth, I hope to be a person like him. My friends think I am just kidding. But I won’t give it up. Maybe self-confidence makes really different and will lead me to make my dream come true.。
