第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)For an increasing number of students at American universities, Old is suddenly in. The reason is obvious: the graying of America means jobs, coupled with the aging of the baby-boom generation, a longer life span means that the nation’s elderly population is bound to expand significantly over the next 50 years. By 2050, 25 percent of all Americans will be older than 65, up from 14 percent in 1995.The change poses profound questions for government and society, of course. But it also creates career opportunities in medicine and health prof essions and in law and business as well. “In addition to the doctors, we’re going to need more sociologists, biologists, urban planners and specialized lawyers,” says Professor Edward Schneider of the University of Southern California’s (USC) School of Ger ontology(老年学).
Lawyers can specialize in “elder law”, which covers everything from trusts and estates to nursing-home abuse and age discrimination. Businessmen see huge opportunities in the elder market because the baby boomers, 74 million strong, are
like ly to be the wealthiest group of retirees in human history. “Any student who combines an expert knowledge in gerontology with, say, an MBA or law degree will have a license to print money,” one professor says.
Margarite Santos is a 21-year-old senior at USC.She began college as a biology major but found she was “really bored with bacteria.” So she took a class in gerontology and discovered that she liked it. She says, “I did volunteer work in retirement homes and it was very satisfying.”
1、With the aging of America, lawyers can benefit ________.
A.from the adoption of the “elder law”
B.from presenting their professional services to the elderly
C.by enriching their professional knowledge
D.by winning the trust of the elderly to promote their own interests.
2、Who can make big money in the new century according to the passage? A.Retirees who are business-minded.
B.The volunteer workers in retirement homes.
C.college graduates with an MBA or law degree.
D.Professionals with a good knowledge of gerontology.
3、Why can businessmen gain profit in the emerging elder market?
A.Retirees are more generous in spending money.
B.They can employ more gerontologists.
C.The elderly possess an enormous purchasing power.
D.There are more elderly people working than before.
22.(8分)They hide in trees, hang from helicopters, even follow people down on motorcycles—all so that they can snap a shot of a celebrity. They are paparazzi—photographers who make a living by taking pictures of the rich and famous.
This September, California, a state with plenty of celebrities, passed a law aimed at taking action against paparazzi. The law forbids photographers from entering private property to take pictures, from using high-tech devices to take pictures of people on private property, and fro m “persistently following in order to take a picture.” Violators can be fined or spend time in prison. The United State Congress is considering passing a similar law.
Supporters of the California law say it will protect the privacy of celebrities, whom paparazzi have been bothering for years. Opponents (反对者) say the law restricts photojournalists from doing their job.
Most celebrities seem to like having their pictures taken when they are in public at award shows or other events. After all, it’s free publicity. But when they’re not in public, they say, photographers should leave them alone. Yet paparazzi have been known to secretly look in windows and worse. Actor Michael J. Fox said that paparazzi have even “tried to pretend to be medical personnel at the h ospital where my wife was giving birth to our son.”
Celebrities have as much right to their privacy as anyone else, supporters of the law
state. Supporters further argue that the California law is a fair way to keep the press at bay, because the law still allows photographers to do their job. It only punishes them, supporters say, when they violate celebrities’ privacy.
Opponents of the law say it violates the First Amendment to the United States Constitution (美国宪法第一修正案), which guarantees that no laws will be made to limit “the freedom of speech, or of the press.”Although some people might not consider paparazzi a part of the legal press, the California law does not single out paparazzi. It applies to photographers working for any publication.
Opponents of t he law are also concerned about its wording. “Does ‘persistently’ mean following someone for six minutes, six seconds, or six days?” asked lawyer Douglas Mirell. The wording of the law is too vague, critics complain, and could be used to punish almost any news photographer.
The United States needs a free press to keep the public informed about important news, paparazzi law opponents say. Limiting the press in any way, they argue, limits the freedom of all.
1、Which of the following will be considered illegal by the new California law? A.Paparazzi slipping into the house of a famous person to take a shot. B.Paparazzi taking photos of famous people with high-tech cameras.
C.Paparazzi hiring helicopters as a fast means of transportation.
D.Paparazzi rushing towards filming sites on motorcycles.

A.it prevents the media from getting worse
B.it gives photographers a fair way to compete
C.punishment forces paparazzi to quit their job
D.privacy of famous people needs special protection
3、Opponents of the new law are concerned that _________.
A.it will violate paparazzi’s privacy
B.the First Amendment will be changed
C.some photographers will be wrongly accused
D.people will not be informed of important news

A.Critical. B.Neutral. C.Approving. D.Skeptical.
23.(8分)With its snow-covered mountains and a variety of wildlife, Yellow Stone National Park is one of the scenic treasures of the United States. Located primarily in Wyoming, the park hosts millions of visitors every year. If you plan to travel within the park, keep in mind advice from the National Park Service.
Seasonal Travel
Travel varies vastly from season to season. Roads are generally open in the summer except for cases of rock or mud slides, wild fires, accidents or road construction. Early snows in the fall can cause some roads to close temporarily. In the winter almost all roads are closed to motor vehicles, but snowmobiles and other snow vehicles with tracks are allowed. Roads begin to open for the spring by the latter part of April but can close if snowfall continues.
Driving Time
Grand Loop is the main road through Yellowstone National Park; it passes by most of the major attractions. These include Old Faithful, Yellowstone Lake and the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. The maximum speed limit on the Grand Loop is 45 miles per hour, but the speed limit drops during some of the winding and twisting sections of this narrow road. Allow yourself at least two days to fully travel the loop due to the size of the park and being sometimes stuck in heavy traffic.
Safety Awareness
Buffalo(水牛)often block the roads in the park as they move through the fields. If a group is traveling across the road you are on, you can either wait for them to pass or find an alternative route. If you get out of your vehicle, the National Park Service says to stay at least 25 yards from any buffalo (and 100 yards or more away from bears and wolves). Buffalo are particularly unpredictable and charge people at speeds up to 30 mph.
You can take your bicycle on any public roads and routes designed for bikes, but bicycles are not allowed on the park roads which are narrow with few shoulders. Altitudes range from 5, 300 to 8, 860 feet. The National Park Service recommends cyclists wear helmets and noticeable clothing.
1、What do we know about travelling in the Yellowstone Park?
A.Roads will stay open in case of emergency.
B.Traffic jam happens from time to time.
C.The driving speed on the road can be 50 mph.
D.Motor vehicles are allowed in the winter.
2、What does the National Park Service suggest people do about safety?
A.Stay inside the car throughout the travel.
B.Get out of their vehicles when coming across the Buffalo.
C.Wear the easy-to-see clothes while bicycling.
D.Avoid bicycling on the public roads.
3、From which is the text probably taken?
A.A guidebook.
B.A commercial advertisement.
C.A research paper.
D.A geography textbook.
24.(8分)We humans spend about one-third of life asleep. Sleep helps us stay healthy, and it also helps our brain remember. Our brains need good sleep to remember what we do and learn during the other two thirds of our life when we are awake. Besides keeping us healthy, some new research shows that a good night’s sleep helps make us more intelligent.
Researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison have found that sleep helps improve brain performance by shrinking synapses in the brain. A synapse is the area where cells pass messages to other cells.
Cirelli is a leading scientist at the school’s Center for Sleep and Consciousness. She found that sleep is when the human brain mixes information it has learned while awake into its general collection of knowledge. However, the brain forgets unimportant details. This forgetting is important. It makes space for new learning and new memories.
Cirelli said that the Center’s research began with this hypothesis: We sleep so that our brain can repair and refresh itself. She said the idea seems simple and reasonable. However, testing and discovering how it works has been extremely difficult. Cirelli and Center director Giulio Tononi have been trying to prove the connection between sleep and the brain’s synapses since 2003. Cirelli said the researchers knew that “stronger synaps es are also bigger.” So, they began their study by “measuring the size of the synapses” in the brain.
They also knew that during sleep, the brain checks on all its synapses and resets
itself for the next day. The team wanted to see if the synapses of the brain are bigger after being awake all day and smaller after a good night’s sleep. Synapses are only about 20-40 nanometers wide. So, the team looked for changes in these already tiny spaces between nerve cells. The team had lo wail until improvements in laboratory technology made it possible to see these tiny changes.
Cirelli says they found that synapse size and strength are upset by being awake and restored by sleeping. She says our synapses shrink as our brains clean themselves during sleep. We wake up refreshed and ready to fill those synapses with new information.
1、Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A.Sleep can only keep us healthy.
B.Sleep can help our brain function better.
C.Sleep can mix all the information.
D.Sleep can take up two-thirds of our life.
2、What does it refer to in Paragraph 4?
A.The measuring the size of the synapses.
B.The space for new learning and new memories.
C.The way our brain can repair and refresh itself.
D.The connection between sleep and the brain’s synapses.
25.(10分)Children’s lives have changed greatly over the last 50 years. But do they have a happier childhood than you or I did?
It’s difficult to look back on one’s own childhood without some element of nostalgia (怀旧的). I have four brothers and sisters, and my memories are all about being with them. Playing board games on the living room floor, or spending days in the street with the other neighborhood children, racing up and down on our bikes, or exploring the nearby woods. My parents scarcely appear in these memories, except as providers either of meals or of severe blame after some particularly risky adventure.
These days, in the UK at least, the nature of childhood has changed dramatically. Firstly, families are smaller, and there are far more only children. It is common for both parents to work outside the home and there is the feeling that there just isn’t time to bring up a large family, or that no one could possibly afford to have more than one child. As a result, today’s boys and girls spend much of their time alone. Another major change is that youngsters today tend to spend a huge amount of their free time at home,
inside. More than anything this is due to the fact that parents worry far more than they used to about real or imagined dangers, so they wouldn’t dream of letting their children play outside by themselves.
Finally, the kind of toys children have and the way they play is totally different. Computer and video games have replaced the board games and more interesting activities of my childhood. The irony (令人啼笑皆非的事情) is that so many ways of playing games are called “interactive”. The fact that you can play electronic ga mes on your own further increases the sense of loneliness felt by many young people today.
Do these changes mean that children today have a less relaxing childhood than I had? I personally believe that they do, but perhaps every generation feels exactly the same.
1、What is the purpose of the direct question given in the first paragraph?
A.To get people’s attention and lead in the topic
B.To gather people’s opinions on childhood
C.To show who the passage is written for
D.To compare the childhood lives of two generations
2、Which is NOT a reason for the changes?
A.Families are smaller today
B.Parents worried too much about their children
C.Toys can be played by children alone at home
D.It’s too dangerous to play outside
3、What has the writer focused on in the fourth paragraph?
A.Young people today shouldn’t play electronic games
B.Some games that young people play today aren’t really good
C.Computer and video games have replaced the board games
D.Board games are much more interesting than computer games
4、The wr iter’s attitude towards the childhood changing is .
A.approving B.unconcerned
C.objective D.optimistic

29、Dear Mike,
How’s it going with you?
You said you would like to come to Hangzhou for a visit, and I strongly advise you to go to Xixi National Wetland Park. I would be very glad to be your guide.
Wetland, known as “the kidney of the earth”, plays an extremely important role in the earth’s ecosystem. Xixi Wetland lies to the west of Hangzhou City, covering an area of about 10 square kilometers. There are varieties of things to do in the park. For example, we can take a boat tour on the river, watching different kinds of birds as we go. We can also enjoy beautiful flowers and have delicious food and so on.
I’m sure we’ll have great fun.
Yours,
Li Hua。
