He had just taken a sip of hot tea when the message popped up, and Keene did a double-take at the subject line: “A TRIBE IS WANTED”.From there, Ben co-founded Tribewanted, an eco-friendly sustainable community existing in the virtual world of the internet and on an actual desert island at the same time. With huge media interest, the courageous and bold idea could have had enormous consequences for tourism. The idea behind Tribewanted was to recruit (招募) a group of similar people online before heading to the Fijian Island of Vorovoro to build a sustainable community alongside the local native tribe. The idea was swept along with a flood of interest, with the island lease (租约) was secured, the virtual community sprung to life. All major decisions on the island were voted on by an online tribe that anyone around the world could join. The idea was so exciting that the journey was turned into a 5 part BBC series “Paradise or Bust” and a book, Tribewanted.Ben spent 10 years building and expanding Tribewanted beyond the crowdfunded sustainable-tourism villages on an island in Fiji, to a beach in Sierra Leone and a farm in Umbria. He faced challenges including a fire sweeping through the island in the first week of the project, a military coup (政变), and a hurricane that threatened to destroy the emerging village. Online disagreements also made decision making hard and pushed the project to the edge. The project survived, and for a while, thrived. From there Ben joined Escape the City, a global community with the mission to help one million people to do work that matters to them and the world, inspiring thousands of talented career changers and ambitious businessmen to take the leap and launch their ideas into the world. Ben led the Escape school team for 5 years, and became a business advisor and guider at Virgin Startup, and Zinc. In which column can you read this text?A.Inspiring people. B.Connected lives.C.Inventive solutions. D.Global business.About two months ago, I removed Uber Eats from my phone. Not because I didn’t like using it. I loved it. Like most cheap, modern luxuries though, there are hidden costs.“Restaurants are barely surviving. Delivery apps will kill them” was a headline in a newspaper, one of many stories exploring the unfair sign-up strategies and high fees taken by these tech companies. Moreover, there were reports about bad working conditions for delivery riders, leading to tragic accidents, even deaths. That’s truly unbearable!I deleted the app and haven’t used it, or any of its competitors, since. Instead of ordering online, now I either cook something or get takeaway nearby. Cooking better food has been a great motivation for me. On lazy nights, I’ve discovered that I can still make a satisfying meal by using whatever ingredients I have on hand. This approach has also saved me much money. As with lots of online shopping, I’d been ordering food without much th ought about the cost. Cooking is almost always cheaper and so is old-school takeaway. These changes have cost me one thing — time. One reason the apps are so popular is that they meet the needs of the convenience-seeking, time-starved individuals. But rather than adding to my stress, having to plan meals again somehow made life less so. Some days it’s been a good motivation to stop work earlier, and engage in activities like going to the shops, or start chopping onions. Walking to pick up takeaway forces you to go for a walk. The change in habit forced me to be on my devices a bit less and to be in my actual life and neighbourhood a bit more. The process has made me think about how technological advances do save us time, but time for what? For me, the answer was often just more time working, or more time online. Making my own food feels like taking back time I had given up for things far less nourishing (有营养的).8. Which might be the reason for the author to remove Uber Eats?A.Her passion for cooking. B.Her boredom with online ordering.C.Her preference for another app. D.Her concern for its negative impacts.9. What does the author think of cooking?A.Addictive and money-saving. B.Cheap and convenient.C.Time-consuming but rewarding. D.Motivating but stressful.10. What does “the process” refer to in the last paragraph?A.Reflecting on the influence of hi-tech.B.Adapting to life free of delivery apps.C.Getting into a healthy eating habit.D.Rediscovering the fun of cooking.11. What can be a suitable title for the text?A.My Order Never ArrivedB.Why Uber Eats Gets Less ActiveC.What Delivery Apps Can Not Offer MeD.The Convenience Was Not Worth The CostAccording to Americans for the Arts, more than two-thirds of U.S. adults say that the arts “lift me up beyond everyday experiences.” Still, only 30 percent attended a concert of any type in 2017; 23 percent visited an art museum; six percent attended a literary event. Fewer than half actively created art of any kind. What has caused this phenomenon is that we do not have time for art — we are weighed down by our day-to-day responsibilities. Maybe you like to play a little background music while you work but most of us rarely, if ever, went to see a live performance, let alone visited a gallery. And reading poetry? Perhaps not since high school.Too often, we let the realities of life get in the way of the arts, which can feel insignificant by comparison. But this is a mistake. The arts might be the single most in-depth experience you will ever be given to explore the nature and meaning of life. And if you make time to consume and produce art, you will find your life become fuller and happier. Some philosophers address the problem of life consumed by work and material pursuits. They argue that art provides relief from this routine, expanding our perspective and bringing us closer to true reality.Think of a time when you heard a piece of music and wanted to cry. Or recall your fast heartbeats as you stared at a delicate lifelike sculpture. Chances are that it probably stimulated (刺激) a sudden awakening, much like the shock from a lungful of pure oxygen after breathing in smoggy air.If you are among those who feel that art is “pure pleasure to experience and participate in,” you might see it the same way you see eating out, or skydiving: as a luxury (奢侈品) item in your limited budgets of time and money. As such, it probably gets the same sort of treatment as any minor hobby. Don’t make this error. Treat art more like exercise or sleep: a necessit y for a life full of deep satisfaction.12. What does paragraph 1 focus on?A.The opinion of U.S. adults about art.B.The types of art that U.S. adults engage with.C.The mismatch between value and behaviour as to art.D.The connection between everyday experiences and art.13. What is a mistaken idea in the author’s opinion?A.Art reveals the nature of life. B.Art gives way to material pursuits.C.Life without art is meaningless. D.Background music is a kind of art.14. What does the author want to convey in paragraph 5?A.Art awakes people’s talents.B.Art improves physical health.C.Art brings us closer to nature. D.Art makes life fuller and happier.15. What might be the best title?A.Art: A Habit, Not a Luxury B.Art: A Bridge, Not a BarrierC.Art: A Decoration, Not a Reality D.Art: A Pleasure, Not a BurdenCrab traps (蟹笼) work like this: crabs crawl in, but they don’t crawl out. 16 However, when traps get lost at sea, they become a threat to all sorts of animals. With no one there to ge t them back, the traps continue to fish, says a researcher. “Marine life gets into the trap. Eventually, they can’t eat so they die, and then other marine life becomes attracted to it. They get into the trap, and they die. 17 ”Abandoned crab traps harm wildlife and affect other fishers, especially shrimpers (捕虾者). Large and heavy crab traps get caught in shrimping nets, tearing them open or blocking them from catching shrimp. Helpless shrimpers, with nowhere to put the smelly traps, generally just throw them back, continuing the cycle. But a group in Mississippi has found a solution: 18 In just three years, the program has removed almost 3,000 crab traps from Mississippi waters. Crab traps are marked, and those that are still in good condition are returned to their owners, while traps that are too broken down are recycled.19 Wildlife is safer, the water is cleaner and there’s been a clear trend that shrimpers are encountering fewer traps.Chloé Dubois, head of a nonprofit focused on marine debris (废弃物), calls it “a great success story.” Dubois says there have been programs historically very successful at recycling waste products at the end of their life cycle. But in the ghost fishing and marine debris field, she says, “ 20 There aren’t many examples of programs like this.”Emily Bhatnagar has always loved reading. “Growing up, I was really shy, so I always turned to_______,” she said. “They sort of became my best friends when I didn’t have one.”In 2019, when Emily was in her second year of high school, her dad was diagnosed with cancer. classmates will ask your opinions of the work of the class. When you are telling others in the class what you have found out about these topics, remember that they must be able to hear what you are saying. You are not taking part in a family conversation or having a chat with friends---you are in a slightly unnatural situation where a large group of people will remain silent, waiting to hear what you have to say.You must speak so that they can hear you---loudly enough and clearly enough but without trying to shout or appearing to force yourself.Remember, too, that it is the same if you are called to an interview whether it is with a professor of your school or a government official who might meet you.The person you are seeing will try to put you at your ease but the situation is somewhat different from that of a ordinary conversation. You must take special care that you can be heard.1.When you speak to the class, you should speak ______.A.as slowly as possible B.in a low voiceC.loudly D.forcefully2.Usually,when you speak to the class, the class is ______.A.noisy B.quiet C.having a rest D.serious3 The situation in the class is ______ that in your house.A.not very forward to for a long time. Then the telephone rings, you say hello, and the drama starts. The person on the other end has a depressing tone in his voice as he starts to tell you how terrible his morning is and that there is nothing to look forward to.You are still in a wonderful mood?Impossible!Communicating with negative people can wash out your happiness. It may not change what you think, but communicating long enough with them will make you feel depressed for a moment or a long time.Life brings ups and downs, but some people are stuck in the wrong idea that life has no happiness to offer. They only feel glad when they make others feel bad.No wonder they can hardly win others’ pity or respect. When you communicate with positive people, your spirit stays happy and therefore more positive things are attracted. When the dagger(匕首) of a negativeperson is put in you,you feel the heavy feeling that all in all, brings you down.Sometimes we have no choice but to communicate with negative people. This could be a co-worker,or a relative. In this case, say what needs to be said as little as possible.Sometimes it feels good to let out your anger back to the negative person, but all this does is to lower you to that same negative level and they won’t feel ashamed of themselves about that.Negativity often affects happiness without even being realized. The negative words of another at the start of the day can cling to you throughout the rest of your day, which makes you feel bad and steals your happiness.Life is too short to feel negative.Stay positive and avoid negativity as much as possible.1.The purpose of the first paragraph is to ______.A.make a comparison B.offer an evidenceC.introduce a topic D.describe a daily scene2.How can negative people have effect on us?A.By on us,we are advised to ______.A.change negative people’s attitudes to lifeB.show our dissatisfaction to negative peopleC.make negative people feel ashamed of themselvesD.communicate with negative people as little as possible5.What is the author’s attitude towards negative people?A.Favorable.B.Critical.C.Indifferent.D.Supportive.三、语法填空(本题共计1小题,总分20分)6.(20分)Every four years, millions of people 2023-2024学年河北省唐山市高二上学期期末考试英语试题
2023-2024学年河北省唐山市高二上学期期末考试英语试题When I was ten years old, Mum got paralyzed (瘫痪) . Before that, she was a lively and active woman who amazed many with her energy. I admired her for all the things she did. However, everything changed when she turned thirty-one.I still have vivid images of her before her paralysis. She would play popular music, creating a cheerful atmosphere for lively gatherings. She would joyfully rearrange the furniture to make room for friends to abandon themselves to dance. She often spent hours filling the house with flowers, which we picked fresh from the gardens. After Mum’s paralysis, I began to take care of my 2-year-old sister, Mary Therese. In no time at all, I learned to bathe and feed her. For me it was a giant step beyond playing with dolls. One moment stands out even today: the time Mary Therese fell and skinned her knee, burst into tears and ran past my mother’s outstretched arms into mine. Too late, I noticed slight hurt on Mum’s face, but all she said was, “It’s natural that she should run to you, because you take such good care of her.”When I was grown and entered the field of corrections, Mum became interested in working with prisoners. She taught writing to them. One day, she asked me to mail a letter to one prisoner, Waymon. I asked for my mother’s permission to read it first. It read: when you said that I couldn’t imagine what it is like to be in prison, I felt like I had to tell you that you are mistaken. When I awoke one day to find that I was completely paralyzed, I felt trapped, overwhelmed by a sense of being imprisoned in a body that would no longer allow me to dance or carry my child in my arms. But then, I made a choice about whether I would smile when I saw my daughters again or I would weep. I made a decision to live as fully as I could.B y the time I finished Mum’s letter, my vision was clouded by tears. For the first time, I saw my mother in a clearer light.1. How can we describe Mum before her paralysis?A.Creative. B.Ambitious. C.Adventurous. D.Enthusiastic.2. What do Mum’s words about Therese’s choice imply?A.Mum had a sharp insightB.Mum was emotionally generousC.Mum was worried about her positionD.Mum was absent-minded at the moment3. Why did the author cry?A.She regretted for what she had done.B.Waymon’s experience was saddening,C.She witnessed Mum’s character shining through.D.There was some secret between her and her mother. The United Nations’ International Year of Soils is hardly a media favorite. Maybe it’s because many people are like me, who recall Mom’s words: “Take off your shoes! Don’t bring dirt into the house! “With all the challenges in the world today, why would we recognize soils?Simply put, soils are literally the base that humans stand on. Ignoring the importance of this meter-thick skin covering our planet is like ignoring the importance of the air we breathe.Without healthy soils, we would not be here.Soil provides the structure and nutrients needed to grow our food. It stores water that satisfies the thirst of the environment, agriculture and humans. It houses the largest amount of carbon (碳)on land, keeping the climate from warming even faster. It provides the necessary support for the habitat of all life on land-including diversity in the soil itself (in some regions, just a handful of soil contains microorganisms that are more than the people on Earth). In short, soil plays an essential role not only in feeding humans but in supporting the living things that produce the oxygen we breathe and purifying the water we drink. In other words, soil keeps our planet habitable. We, therefore, must stop considering ”soil“ a dirty word and remember that the food we eat and water we drink can be traced back to it. Businesses should adopt guidelines that ensure the long term health and productivity of soil. And local and national governments should provide policies that encourage soil protection.Soil is one of the most important resources on our planet, and we have ignored it too long-at our own risk. The most important thing that can happen is a change in mind-set that recognizes soil is not dirt. It’s life beneath our feet.4. Why does the author mention Mom’s words?A.To criticize media.B.To find fault with parentsC.To show a common attitude.D.To promote International Year of Soils.5. Paragraph 3 is mainly about the _______________ of soil.A.roles B.types C.health D.structure6. What is the best title for the passage?A.Soil Being in DangerB.Making the Most of SoilC.Unearthing the Importance of SoilD.Healthy Soil Growing More FoodFlora was playing with her new dog Stitch, while wearing a favourite second-hand sweater. Stitch jumped up and grabbed her sleeve-and tore several holes in it with her sharp teeth.Flora wasn’t about to throw the item out. “I can’t bring myself to throw away nice clothing just because of a hole, ”she explains. She decided to tackle a new skill repairing. She began by reading a book called Make Do and Repair, about the innovative ways to avoid waste.Instead of tying to make the repair as small as p ossible, she turned to “visible fixing, ”a fashion in repairing clothes that leaves an intentionally obvious fix. She added flowers, or other small designs to damaged clothes. “Every time you do a repair, it’s like getting a new piece of clothing, ”says Flora.Sadly, we have been in the habit of replacing things instead of repairing them—and the garbage is piling up. Worldwide, we throw out 92 million tonnes of fabric every year. The good news is that fixing things can help solve the waste problem. It’s part of a larger shift toward a circular economy -the idea that instead of throwing out items once they are broken or out of date, we reuse or repair them, keeping them out of the waste yard for as long as possible. There was a time when people fixed things themselves or called their local repair shop, But as more items were produced and prices dropped, replacing even a big appliance became more convenient. That’s changing, in part due to information now available online. The popular how-to site iFixit. com has enabled more than 100 million repairs.“Companies have been designing products that break easily or become outdated quickly, forcing consumers to buy new ones or purchase up grades. We’re now seeing some producers show interest in making it possible for users to repair things. Some companies are selling official parts and sharing their repair guides through iFixit. IFixit has grown into a database with over 100, 000 repair manuals. We have this vision of a world where repair is the expectation for all things that are made, ”says Chamberlain, director of iFixit.7. Why did Flora read a book?A.For innovation. B.For repairing skills.C.For a better life. D.For dog-raising information.8. What makes the author sad?A.People’s habit.B.Repairing quality.C.Fabric production. D.Worldwide garbage.9. What is the purpose of ”circular economy“?A.To remove landfills. B.To increase production.C.To help exchange goods. D.To realize resource cycle.10. What can be inferred from Chamberlain?A.He expects more wiser users.B.He supports purchase upgrades.C.He creates the repairing database of iFixit.D.He has a desire for companies and consumers.A well-prepared routine allows a student to be on time, and grow or develop some life skills and healthy habits. At an early stage, as a student, it is very important to adopt some good habits.Educating a student is not only about academics but also about developing good habits for better life. 11A routine daily life can grow a child’s confidence. A routine provides a sense of predictability and security for students. 12 In this secure setting, students are more likely to feel confident in approaching their daily tasks and challenges.13 !Maintaining a well-structured routine is like creating a roadmap for concentration and productivity. When students set aside specific times for their studies, they get better at their tasks without getting distracted. As students systematically manage their daily tasks within the framework of their routine, they can gradually develop a growing awareness of their responsibilities. Such sense of responsibility extends beyond the academic field and spills over into their personal lives. 14 They will be more responsible. While routines provide structure, they also teach students how to adapt. 15 When students encounter changes, they learn to adjust their expectations and plans. The ability to adapt to changing circumstances is also essential for success.Cessna planes flew me and my climbing team onto the Kahiltna Glacier, the base camp of Mt. McKinley. heliospheric(日球层的)physics for the past half century, passed away peacefully at his home in Chicago on Mar.15.He was94.Hailed(誉为)as a visionary in the field of heliophysics,Parker revolutionized our understanding of the sun and its effects on Earth and other bodies within the solar system.NASA even stated that“the field of heliophysics exists in large part because of Dr.Eugene Parker.In2018,Parker became the first living scientist to witness the launch of a spacecraft that was named in his honor.Parker is best known for his groundbreaking theory on the existence of a phenomenon called “solar wind”,a continuous stream of charged particles(粒子)that flow off the sun.It can become violent, causing space weather that impacts the Earth. When Parker’s research was published in1958, his theory was initially met with skepticism and ridicule by the scientific community. The general view at the time was that the space between planets was an absolute vacuum(真空),and was thus completely empty of any matter. But,there were no errors in his study or his calculations, and the theory was later proven to be correct in1962,when a NASA spacecraft mission to Venus revealed the constant presence of a supersonic wind—exactly as Parker had predicted. That experience likely led to the advice Parker often gave young researchers:“If you do something new or innovative, expect trouble. But think critically about it because if you’re wrong, you want to be the first one to know that.”Parker never co-authored a paper with his students, thus urging them to be independent.Parker was humble, straightforward, and wise. His son Eric said,“My sister Joyce and I didn’t get a real feel for what a‘big dog’our dad was in the field.”They got an even better sense when a month after Parker’s death, they traveled to Lund,Sweden,to accept on his behalf the Crafoord Prize in Astronomy.24.What can we learn from the second paragraph?A.A spacecraft was named in memory of Parker.B.The sun has less effects on Earth than expected.C.Parker deserved credit for his great contributions.D.NASA provided new insights into the lunar effect.25.Why did people view Parker’s theory of“solar wind”skeptically at first?A.It went against the popular opinion at that time.B.Some mistakes were found in his calculations.C.The presence of a supersonic wind was proven by NASA.D.Matter was believed to exist in the space between planets.26.What did Parker suggest young researchers do?A.seek close cooperationB.learn by trial and errorC.avoid high expectationspete against others27.What words can be used to describe Parker according to the passage?A.straightforward and generousB.responsible and accessibleC.intelligent yet meanD.distinguished yet modestCAccording to body language expert Robert Phipps, the way people sleep at night actuallydetermines a lot about the type of personality they have.Phipps has identified four sleeping positions that affect personality.Phipps found that worriers, those who stress the most, tend to sleep in the fetal position. He found that this is the most common bedtime position, with nearly58percent of people sleeping on their side with knees up and head down. The more we curl up,the more comfort we are seeking, according to Phipps. The second most common position is the log.Sleeping with a straight body, with arms at each side,as if they are standing guard at Buckingham Palace, indicates stubbornness, and these people(the 28percent who sleep this way)often wake up stiffer than when they went to sleep.“The longer you sleep like this, the more rigid your thinking is and you can become inflexible, which means you make things harder for yourself,”according to Phipps.Yearner(向往型)sleepers are next on the list.About25percent of people sleep in this style—on their side with arms stretched out in front, looking as if they are either chasing a dream or perhaps being chased themselves.Yearners are typically their own worst critics, always expecting the best results, explained Phipps. These people often wake up refreshed and eager to face the challenges of the day ahead.Perhaps the most peculiar of sleep styles is the freefaller position. This sleep style makes up17 percent of the population. They sleep face down with arms stretched out. These people, according to Phipps, feel like they have little control over their life. Not only is this the strangest of sleep styles, but also the least comfortable, and people may wake up feeling tired and have no energy. In conclusion,Phipps has only one more thing to add,“A good night’s sleep sets you up for the following day and our sleeping positions can determine how we feel when we wake.”28.What is the main idea of the passage?A.A Good Night's Sleep Sets You Up for the Following DayB.Your Personality Depends a Lot on How You Sleep at NightC.How You Sleep at Night Affects What You Do the Next DayD.Which Sleeping Position Helps You Sleep Comfortably29.Which of the following pictures is the fetal position?30.The underlined word“rigid”is closest in meaning to“________”.A.stubbornB.flexiblefortableD.strange31.Which sleeping position indicates that the sleeper tends to seek perfection?A.The fetal position.B.The log position.C.The freefaller position.D.The yearner position.DSupermarket shelves are filled with plant-based alternatives to cow milk, including soy, nut, and coconut milk. These products are popular with consumers who cannot drink cows’milk for health reasons,as well as with those concerned about animal welfare and environmental sustainability. While the dairy-free options work well with cereal or in coffee, they fail miserably when it comes to makingmilk-based products like cheese or yogurt. However, these shortcomings may soon be a thing of the past, thanks to a new company in California, which has figured out how to create animal-free milk in a laboratory!Perumal Gandhi and Ryan Pandya founded the company in2014after becoming increasingly annoyed with the lack of cows’milk-free alternatives, particularly for cheese. For Gandhi, who stopped consuming animal products five years earlier due to environmental and animal welfare concerns, the motivation to create a better alternative stemmed from his love of cheesy pizza.Pandya was spurred into taking action after being forced to eat some“really bad”dairy-free cream cheese on his sandwich. The two MIT biomedical engineering scientists decided to join forces to create a more realistic alternative to dairy-based products. In their university lab,the pair spent nine months first isolating cow DNA then inserting it into yeast(酵母).This genetic modification enabled the yeast to produce the necessary milk proteins. The final step of the process involved mixing the proteins with some plant nutrients and fats. The dairy-free milk not only tastes like the real thing but is also healthier, has a longer shelf life and, most important of all,is Earth friendly.According to the company’s website, when compared to conventional milk production, their process uses65%less energy,creates84%less greenhouse gas emissions and requires91%less land and an amazing98%less water!Best of all, since it contains real milk proteins, the product behaves like the cow-produced version, which means vegetarian consumers will no longer have to deal with soggy cheese on their sandwiches and pizzas. The company plans to bring their creation to market later this year and their first product will most likely be cheese since there are already numerous good cows’milk alternatives available to consumers.32.The underlined word"those"in paragraph1refers to_______.A.alternativesB.productsC.peopleD.reasons33.The company’s founders were motivated to make the new product because of_______.A.their deep concern for the environmentB.the poor taste of dairy-free cheese presently availableC.the over-consumption of the dairy-based productsD.their worry that farm animals were poorly treated34.What can be inferred from paragraph4?A.The dairy-free products cannot be stored for a long time.B.The new products will taste better than dairy-based ones.C.Cow farming causes considerable environmental damage.D.The dairy-free milk will be more expensive than cow’s milk.35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.Healthier CheeseB.New Milk Saves PlanetC.Fresher Milk,Better FutureD.Making Milk without Cows第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

So the city began a scheme(计划) to improve the situation.Under the Velib scheme (“Velib” comes from vélo liberté, or “bicycle freedom”) people can take a bicycle, use it for as long as they want, and then leave it at the same or another bicycle station. The first half-hour on the bike is free, but if you don't return it after 30 minutes, you have to pay. But it's only € 1 a day or € 29 a year! The bicycles are heavy(25kg), and they are all grey and have baskets. There are about 20,000 of them in the city, and around 1,450 bicycle stations. So there are a lot more Velib stations than the 298 subway stations!Paris is not the first city to have a scheme like this. But not everybody thinks it's a great idea. One Parisian said, “These bicycles are only for short journeys. If people want to travel across the city, they won't use a bicycle―they'll still use their cars.”A city spokesman said, “The bicycle scheme won't solve all our traffic problems, of course. But it might help reduce air pollution. Traffic, together with factory fumes, is a big problem. There aren't any simple answers to traffic problems and pollution in cities. But unless we do something now, there will be more traffic jams and temperatures will continue to rise, so the problems in our environment will get worse. The bikes might help people to lead a healthier life, too. ”(1).What can we know about the Velib scheme?A.Its bikes have no baskets.B.Its bikes are light and colorful.C.It aims to make traveling easier.D.It owns more stations than the subway.(2).How much should you pay for using a Velib for 40 minutes?A.€1B.€ 29.C.€ 30.D.No money.(3).Why do some people disagree with the Velib scheme?A.The cost is rather high.B.It`s hard to find a Velib station.C.It's not suitable for a long journey.D.The distance between two Velib stations is long.(4).What s the city spokesman's attitude towards the bicycle scheme?A.Doubtful.B.Positive.C.Uncaring.D.Worried.3.(10分)Researchers at Harvard Medical School have confirmed that people who suffer a heart attack when there is a marathon taking place nearby have a 15 percent higher chance of dying within the next month than if the event strikes on a non-race day. They found that, despite the group of emergency services personnel usually present along the 26.2-mile route, the traffic is often so blocked up by road closures that key minutes are lost getting patients to hospital.“When it comes to treating people in the pain of a heart attack, minutes do matter―heart muscle dies quickly during a heart attack,” said Dr Anupam Jena, who led the research.Previous studies have examined death rates among marathon runners to assess the cardiac(心脏的) risks of endurance training. This is believed to be the first research analyzing impact of such races on those living nearby. The investigators examined 10 years' worth of patient records analyzing death rates among older Americans, 65 years of age and over, within 30 days of having a heart attack or a cardiac arrest(心脏停搏) near a major marathon.Death rates among patients hospitalised on the day of the race were compared with those hospitalised five weeks prior or five weeks after the race, and researchers also compared death rates among people living close to the event and those living in areas unaffected by street closures.“When cities host big marathons, or when people participate in races, they don't think that there might be a chance that a person not taking part in the race could die because of the event,” said Jena.(1).What did the scientists find from the research?A.Marathon races do harm to the players.B.Major marathons see many athletes die.C.Most people suffer a heart attack during races.D.Marathon increases the chances of heart attack death.(2).What can we learn about the research trom paragraph 4?A.It is hard to avoid dying during marathon races.B.Treatment is usually absent during a heart attack.C.It is a research on effect of marathons on nearby people.D.It is suggested that people should give up marathons.(3).What may people think of the result of the research from the text?A.Astonishing.B.Regretful.mon.D.Coincidental.(4).Where is the text most probably from?A.Local sports games.B.Science and technology.C.Health and medicine.D.Environment and energy.4.(10分)A recent study suggests that vitamin D pills can help speed up the time taken for burns to heal, and prevent scarring(结疤). The vitamin, which is produced naturally in the body when the skin is exposed to sunshine, is believed to help protect against burning.Previous studies have shown that vitamin D pills help decrease redness and swelling after sunburn, and may be one of the reasons why the body produces the chemical. The research from Birmingham University, has found they may also help relieve other types of burn. Researchers monitored 38 patients who had suffered serious burns for a year and recorded their levels of vitamin D. They found that those with the highest levels of vitamin D had better wound healing and fewer scars.Professor Janet Lord said:“Low vitamin D levels were associated with worse results in burn patients including life-threatening infections(感染), death and delayed wound healing. Major burn injury severely reduces vitamin D levels and adding this vitamin back may be a simple, safe and cost-effective way to improve the condition for burn patients.”Professor Lord and her team are now focusing on finding out why there is a rapid loss of vitamin D in patients immediately following burn injury and hope that they may be able to prevent this in future. The amount of reduction in patients' vitamin D levels was not related to the severity(严重程度) of the burn, so levels may also be decreased in minor burn injury, suggesting taking vitamin D pills could also help people with everyday burns. Public Health England nowrecommends that all Britons take vitamin D pills in the winter because it is impossible to make sufficient quantities in the darker months.(1).What does the new study find?A.People with low vitamin D levels get burned easily.B.Vitamin D helps with the recovery from burn injury.C.Vitamin D pills aid in reducing the swelling from burns.D.Vitamin D is more beneficial to serious burns than minor burns.(2).What can we learn from the last two paragraphs?A.The severity of one's burn reflects his vitamin D levels.B.Vitamin D pills are more needed in the autumn months.C.Burn patients lacking vitamin D are at high risk of infection.D.Minor burns have no effect on patients' vitamin D levels.(3).What does the underlined word “they” in paragraph 3 refer to?A.The researchers.B.Vitamin D pills.C.Previous studies.D.Some kinds of vitamins.(4).Which of the following can be the best title of the text?A.Vitamin D: A Necessity for Our HealthB.Vitamin D Pills: When Are They Needed?C.Vitamin D: How Much Does the Body Need?D.Vitamin D Pills: Heal Burns &. The people I knew described to me as a place where there were lots of people from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds, and where everyone was open-minded and there were discussions happening everywhere. I’m happy to say that ended up being my experience as well.I joined Lion, one of Australasia’s largest food and drink companies, as part of their graduate program, which was a fantastic opportunity, because it gave me the opportunity to work in a variety of roles, and gain experience across a variety of functions. But the thing with Lion was that they were already a very established business; they already had their processes and structures in place. When the opportunity came for me to join Culture Amp, I realized it was an opportunity to see a business grow and be part of that evolution. It was just what I wanted. That comes with its own challenges, as new problems appear you might be solving them from the very beginning, rather than having a framework to fall back on, but it also means there’s room to learn and experiment. It made me realize where my interests lie. Here in Australia, there’s a really high tolerance for change in your careers. I think it’s really easy for graduates to feel like they have to “jump” into a role, and then that’s it, forever. But the truth is, your career is a marathon. You can expect to change courses along the way, and allow your interests to open new doors.14.Why did the author choose to study in Australia?A.Her friends lived there.B.She decided to work there.C.She liked the culture there.D.She wanted to meet new people.15.Which can best describe the author’s work in Lion?A.Facing various opportunities.B.Lacking challenges.C.Demanding new structures.D.Offering limited roles.16.What did the author want to get from Culture Amp?A.Learning how to do experiments.B.Having a framework to turn to.C.Dealing with problems in wise ways.D.Experiencing a company’s development.17.What is the author’s attitude towards changing jobs?A.Uncertain.B.Objective.C.Supportive.D.Contradictory.An owl(猫头鹰) named Flaco escaped New York’s Central Park Zoo last week after his cage was broken. This set off a bird- hunt of police officers and park rangers( 护林员). Zoo officials worried that Flaco, who had been kept in his zoo cage for 13 years, may have lost the survival abilities he needed in the wild. They placed some of his favorite treats in the open air to attempt to trap him.Flaco was not fooled. Instead, he was sighted flying over 5th Avenue, and Central Park’s skating rink. A number of New Yorkers stamped into Central Park to try to catch a glimpse of Flaco, taking photos with excitement. But this week, zoo officials announced they accepted that Flaco remained in Central Park because he had been seen bringing up bones and fur from the park’s abundant community of rats. “He has been very successful at hunting and consuming the abundant rats in the park.” zoo officials told the New York Post. “And that’s amazing. He’s hunting on his own. He’s flying better. Flaco really seems to be enjoying himself out there.”There is a caution attached to this story of an owl who is making it on his own in the citythat never sleeps. Owls are nocturnal. They go around searching for food at night. They sleep during the day, or try to, like lots of people who work the overnight shift. Yet some New Yorkers who don’t know proper bird-watching behavior reportedly see Flaco sleep in a tree during the day, and begin to shout at him. It interrupts his sleep. Flaco can’t try to say “shh, shh” with the traditional New York reply. After all, a bird can’t give someone the bird. 18.Why were zoo officials concerned about Flaco’s ability to survive?A.Because his favourite food was too little.B.Because he might be attacked by police.C.Because his cage was severely damaged.D.Because he was kept in his cage for long.19.What can we infer about Flaco from the third paragraph?A.He has adapted to the wild.B.He has found his previous home.C.He still faces great challenges.D.He dislikes the rats in the park. 20.What does the underlined word “nocturnal” in paragraph 4 mean?A.Scary-looking.B.Shy and quiet.C.Active at night.D.Badly-behaved.21.Which word best describes the author’s attitude to the interruption to Flaco’s sleep?A.Cautious.B.Favorable.C.Ambiguous.D.Disapproving.We are all aware of the damaging pollution that’s created by driving petrol and diesel (柴油) vehicles. Many of the world’s cities are blocked with traffic, creating fumes containing gases such as nitrogen oxides. The solution for a cleaner, greener future could be electric vehicles. But how optimistic should we be? There was much excitement last year when the UK government announced it will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. But is that easier said than done? The road to global traffic being totally electric is still a long way off. Currently, battery life is an issue — a fully charged battery won’t take you as far as a full tank of petrol. There are also limited numbers of charging points to plug an EV into. Of course, technology is always improving. Some of the biggest tech companies, like Google and Tesla, are spending huge amounts of money developing electric cars. And most of the big car manufacturers are now making them too. Colin Herron, a consultant on low-carbon vehicle technology, told the BBC: “The big leap forward will come with solid state batteries, which will appear first inmobile phones and laptops before they progress to cars.” These will charge more quickly and give cars a bigger range. Cost is another issue that may discourage people switching to electric power. But some countries offer incentive, such as cutting prices by reducing import taxes, and not charging for road tax and parking. Some also provide exclusive lanes for electric cars to be driven on, overtaking traditional cars which might be stuck in jams. These kinds of measures have made Norway the country with the most electric cars per capita (人均) at more than thirty electric cars per 1000 inhabitants. But Colin Herron warns that “electric motoring” doesn’t mean a zero-carbon future. “It’s emission-free motoring, but the car has to be built, the battery has to be built, and the electricity does come from somewhere.” Maybe it’s time to think about making fewer journeys or using public transport. 22.What can we infer from the question at the end of paragraph 1?A.We should not be too optimistic about the future.B.Electric vehicles may not solve the traffic problems.C.It’s not a good idea to replace petrol vehicles with electric ones.D.It is not easy to obtain a greener future by means of electric vehicles.23.What does the underlined word “incentive” mean in paragraph 2?A.payment B.income C.encouragement D.method 24.Which statement is true according to the passage?A.Electric motoring will create a zero-carbon future.B.Electric cars might not get stuck in traffic jams in the future.C.There are four obstacles on the road to global traffic being totally electric.D.Putting solid-state batteries in electric cars first will be a “great leap forward”. 25.What is the most suitable title for the text?A.Total Electric Traffic: a Long Way to GoB.Electric Vehicles: a Road to a Greener FutureC.Electric Power or Petrol: a Tough Decision to MakeD.Petrol and Diesel Vehicles: a Main source of GasesDeveloping Interpersonal RelationshipsOne of the biggest keys to happiness is having strong interpersonal relationships. I believe that relationships are key to leading a fulfilling and contented life. Like anything worth having in life, they take some work to develop and maintain. In the spirit of clarity, it’s good idea to take a quick look at the definition of interpersonal relationships. 26 This can extend from family to friends, to work associates, to neighbors, or clubs and on and on. It can be a relationship in any context or situation. For instance, I’ve had strong short-lived relationships with people I’ve worked with on a project as well as one for 50 years with my brother. My two best friends and I live in different cities but, we get together several times a year and have a great time. I have a mentor I worked with over a decade ago I still stay in touch with because we get along so well. 27 We will briefly touch on developing interpersonal relationships. Best way to approach it is to be a good partner or friend as the situation desires. 28 Do your part and help others as needed. Be a contributor who is also willing to help out when needed. As a friend, you simply follow the age-old piece of advice “to have a friend, you must first be a friend”.29 That want-to-help attitude will put you with like-minded individuals who you’ll probably hit it off with. The main thing to remember is great interpersonal relationships can get formed any lace or situation where you interact with other people. 30 A.That’s how interpersonal relationship affects you.B.Interpersonal relationships serve to ease people’s anxiety.C.For instance, ensure you are a good person to work with.D.All of these are examples of strong interpersonal relationships.E.Put some effort into it and you’d be amazed at how that pays offF.An interpersonal relationship is a strong association between people.G.If you’re on a team, it should be something you’d like to help out with.三、完形填空Once a year, around the time when Christians celebrate Easter, Muslims celebrate Ramadan and Jews celebrate Passover, I often invite my 24-person team to a joyful andYet when people 38 my lab, they gather together, first through their common 39 for science, and then as they get to know one another and enjoy spare time activities, we become a cohesive(有凝聚力的) team.
