Once upon a time, there reigned a king who was extremely fond of new clothes. He cared more about his wardrobe than the affairs of his kingdom, often neglecting the needs of his subjects for the sake of his own vanity. The king's passion for fashion was well-known, and it attracted two swindlers who claimed to be the most skilled tailors in the land. They promised to create a magnificent suit of clothes that was invisible to anyone who was unfit for the office he held, or who was simply foolish.
Intrigued by this novel idea, the king eagerly commissioned them to begin work.
The swindlers set up their workshop in the palace, demanding the finest silk and the most precious gems. They pretended to be busy at work, but in reality, they were simply eating, drinking, and making merry, all at the
king's expense. As days passed, they feigned progress, promising a suit that would be the envy of all kings.
The king, eager to see the progress of his new attire, sent his most trusted ministers to inspect the work. But
the ministers, afraid of appearing foolish or unfit for their positions, pretended to see the suit, praising its beauty and elegance. Word spread through the palace that the king's new clothes were indeed magnificent, though no one had actually seen them.
Finally, the day arrived for the king to try on his new clothes. With a grand procession, he walked into the workshop, surrounded by his courtiers and subjects. The swindlers, with feigned deference, helped the king "dress" in his invisible suit. The king, looking in the mirror, saw only his reflection, but the courtiers, following the earlier precedent, showered him with compliments.
The king, satisfied with his new attire, declared a grand parade through the city. As he walked, the people lining the streets gasped in amazement at the king's supposed attire, though in truth, they saw nothing but the king's naked body. No one dared to speak the truth, afraid of being labeled as foolish or unfit.
However, a young child, unaware of the court's intricacies, shouted out, "But he isn't wearing anything at all!" This simple truth spread like wildfire, and soon, the
whole city knew that the king had been duped. The king, realizing his folly, tried to hide his embarrassment, but the damage had been done.
In the end, the swindlers escaped with their ill-gotten gains, while the king learned a valuable lesson about
vanity and gullibility. The incident became a cautionary tale, reminding people of the dangers of being blinded by their own pride and the importance of speaking truth to power.
