决胜四级--阅读(3)1It is hard to get any agreement on the accurate meaning of the term “social class”. In everyday life, people tend to have a different approach to those theyconsider their equals from that which they assume with people they consider higher or lower than themselves in the social scale. The criteria we useto “place”a new acquaintance(熟人), however, are a complex mixture of factors. Dress, way of speaking, area of residence in a given city or province, education and manners all play a part.In Greece, after the sixth century B.C., there was a growing conflict betweenthe peasants and the landed aristocrats(贵族), and a gradual decrease in the power of the aristocracy when a kind of “middle class” of traders and skilled workers grew up. The population of Athens, for example, was divided into three main classses which were politically and legally distinct. About one third of the total were slaves, who did not count politically at all, a fact often forgotten by those who praise Athens as the nursery of democracy. The next main group consisted of resident foreigners, the “metics”, who were freemen, though they two were allowed no share in political life. The third group was the powerful body of “citizens”, who were themselves divided into sub classes. In the later Middle Ages, however, the development of monetary economy and thegrowth of cities and trade led to the rise of another class, the “burghers” orcity merchants and mayors. These were the predecessors of the modern middle classes. Gradually high office and occupation assumed importance in determining social position, as it became more and more possible for a person born to one station in life to move to another. This change affected the towns more than the country areas, where remnants of feudalism lasted much longer. With the break up of the feudal economy, the increasing division of labour, and the growing power of the town burghers(公民), the commercial and professionalmiddle class became more and more important in Europe, and the olderprivilegedclass, the landed aristocracy, began to lose some of its power.1. The main idea of the first paragraph is that ____.A. to define the term social class does not involve much difficultyB. there is much alternation in people’s social classesC. to evaluate a person’s social class is a very complex procedureD. we can tell which social class a person belongs to by the way he behaves2. In Line 5 Paragraph 1, “criteria”most probably means ____.A. standards of judgementB. waysC. criticismD. characteristic3. The decline of the Greek aristocracy’s power in the sixth century B.C. was the result of ____.A. the conflicts between the peasants and the landed aristocratsB. the foreign residentsC. slavesD. the newly emerging middle class in the sixth century4. Which of the following statements is NOT TRUE, according to the passage?A. Slaves in Greece in the sixth centuryB.C. were not politically significant.B. The “burghers”of the later Middle Ages constituted an entirely new social class.C. To some extent, social mobility can be attributed to the growth of trade.D. The new class made up of traders and executive officials of the laterMiddle Ages made the development of a money economy possible.5. The best title of the passage might be ____.A. The Criteria for Classifying Social GroupsB. Social ClassesC. Changes in Social SystemD. The Evolution of Human Society2It is generally accepted that the experiences of the child in his first years largely determine his character and later personality. Every experience teaches the child something and the effects are cumulative. “Upbringing” is normally used to refer to the treatment and training of the child within the home. This is closely related to the treatment and training of the child in school, which is usually distinguished by the term “education”. In a society such as ours, both parents and teachers are responsible for the opportunities provided for the development of the child, so that upbringing and education are interdependent. The ideals and practices of child rearing vary from culture to culture. In general, the more rural the community, the more uniform are the customs of child upbringing. In more technologically developed societies, the period of childhood and adolescence(青春期) tends to be extended over a long time, resulting in more opportunity for education and greater variety in character development.Early upbringing in the home is naturally affected both by the cultural pattern of the commun ity and by the parents’ capabilities and their aims and dependsnot only on upbringing and education but also on the innate abilities of the child. Wide differences of innate intelligence and temperament exist even in childrenof the same family.Intelligent parents, however, realize that the particular setting of each family is unique, and there can be no rigid(严格的) general rules. They use generalinformation only as a guide in making decisions and solving problems. All parents have to solve the problems of freedom and discipline. The youngerthe child, the more readily the mother gives in to his demands to avoid disappointing him. She knows that if his energies are not given an outlet, her child’s continuing development may be warped.A child m ust be allowed to enjoy this “messy” but tactile stage of discoverybefore he is ready to go on to the less physical pleasures of toys and books. Similarly, throughout life, each stage depends on the satisfactory completion of the one before.6. It’s a general belief that a child’s later character and personality is ____ decided by his early experiences both at home and in school.A. chieflyB. by chanceC. entirelyD. seldom7. The word “cumulative”in Line 3 most probably means ____.A. decisiveB. extremely beneficialC. strongD. progressively greater8. It can be seen from the passage that ____.A. the cultural pattern is the single factor that affects a child’s upbringing in the homeB. by no means does the technological development of a community contribute to the development of children’s characterC. there are advisable rules for parents to go by in bringing up their chIldrenD. upbringing and education are mutually complementary9. A child’s development might well be adversely affected if ____.A. he were subjected to unusually strict disciplineB. his mother often gave in to his demandsC. his energies were freely given an outletD. he were brought up in a happy environment10.As it is presented in the passage, rather than a smooth progression the development of the human character and personality is a series of ____.A. actsB. stagesC. functionsD. completions3It’s often hard for those of us who have achieved the status of honoured parent to appreciate quite how spoilt the children of the 1980s are when it comes to TV and films. Anything less than total visual perfection and watch out for trouble as you shuffle out through the doorway marked “EXIT”. But we must be firm occasionally, so next time your child observes that, personally, he would have expected a decaying body to have had a somewhat greener colour, seize him by the ear and remind him that when you were young, people used to run out of the cinemacrying with terror as a cloth covered rubber gorilla sat on top of a cardboardskyscraper and snatched balsawood aeroplanes out of the sky.If any one man may be held responsible for this state of affairs then it must be Tony Dyson, creator of R2D2 in the film The Empire Strikes Back . If it were not for him, then film special effects would still be back in the far off innocent days of jerky paper dinosaurs. Brian Johnson, who was in charge of the special effects of The Empire Strikes Back , ordered not just one, but eight editions of the robot which was soon to win the hearts of audiences the worldover as R2D2. It took the Dyson workshop five months of frantic labour but the order was met in time for the start of the shooting of the film. After the success of R2D2, other film and television work followed; a great deal for the Oxford Scientific Film series of wildlife documentaries. But Tony Dyson has always been an enthusiastic reader of science fiction, ever since childhood, and his old interest soon led him back to robots of one kind or another, and this time to robots for advertising purposes. Phil the robot was designed for Philips domestic appliances and this two metre robot has appeared in children’sTV programmes, in stores up and down the country, at exhibitions as well as in television commercials.Tony has now completed work on Harry, an animated advertising cartoon with a difference in that he holds conversations with his audiences. But his main interest at the moment is the launching of Droid Factory Ltd; a company set up specially to rent out promotional robots to marketing companies.11.Children nowadays are different from their parents in the way that ____.A. they cause trouble in cinemasB. they are more visually awareC. they have perfect eyesightD. they are more easy to spoil12.The writer suggests that parents should ____.A. encourage their children to see old filmsB. control their children by twisting their earsC. stand no nonsense from their childrenD. scare their children by taking them to horror films13.The importance of Tony Dyson to the cinema is ____.A. he was the first man to produce special effectsB. he changed people’s expectations of special effectsC. he produced models of dinosaurs out of paperD. he created the film The Empire Strikes Back14.Dyson invented Phil the robot to ____.A. advertise a productB. make appearance on televisionC. be displayed in shopsD. appear at exhibitions15.Nowadays Dyson is mainly interested in ____.A. having conversations with robotsB. appearing in supermarketsC. selling promotional robotsD. establishing a company4In ancient Greece athletic festivals were very important and had strong religi ous associations. The Olympian athletic festival, held every four years in honour of Zeus, eventually lost its local character, bacame first a national event, and then, after the rules against foreign competitors had been waived , international. No one knows exactly how far back the Olympic Games go, but some official records date from 776 B.C.The Games took place in August on the plain by Mount Olympus. Many thousands of spectators gathered from all parts of Greece, but no woman was admitted even as a spectator. Slaves, women and dishonoured persons were not allowed to compete. The exact sequence of events is uncertain, but events included boys’gymnastics, horse racing, field events such as discus and javelin throwing, and the very important foot races. There was also boxing and wrestling and special tests of varied ability such as the pentathlon, the winner of which excelled in running, jumping, discus and javelin throwing and wrestling. The evening of the third day was devoted to sacrificial offerings to the heroes ofthe day, and the fourth day, that of the full moon, was set aside as a holy day. On the sixth and last day, all the victors were crowned with holy garlands(花冠) of wild olive from a sacred wood. So great was the honour that the winner of the foot race gave his name to the year of his victory. Although Olympic winners received no prize money, they were, in fact, richly rewarded by their state authorities. The public honour also made the strict discipline of the ten month training period worthwhile. In spite of the lengthy training, however runners were known to drop dead from strain at the winning post. After an uninterrupted history of almost 1,200 years, the Games were abolishedin A.D. 394, the Christian era, because of their pagan(异教的) origin. It was over 1,500 years before there was another such international athletics gathering. The Greek institution was revived in 1896 and the first small meeting took place in Athens. After the 1908 London Olympics, success was re established and nations sent their best representatives. In times of peace, the Games have taken place ever since at four yearly intervals.〖FK)〗[CSX][CSD]16.The first Olympic Games most probably took place ____.A. in 776B.C. 决胜四级--阅读(4)1In the early days of sea travel, seamen on long voyages lived exclusively on salted meat and biscuits. Many of them died of scurvy(坏血病), a disease of the blood which causes swollen gums, livid white spots on the flesh and general exhaustion. On one occasion, in 1535, an English ship arrived in Newfoundland with its crew desperately ill. The men’s lives were saved by Iroquois Indians who gave them vegetable leaves to eat. Gradually it came to be realized that scurvy was caused by some lack in the sailors’ diet and Captain Cook, on his long voyages of discovery to Australia and New Zealand, established the fact that scurvy could be warded off by the provision of fresh fruit for the sailors.Nowadays it is understood that a diet which contains nothing harmful may yet result in serious disease if certain important elements are missing. These elements are called “vitamins”. Quite a number of such substances are known and they are given letters to identify them, A, B, C, D, and so on. Different diseases are associated with deficiencies of particular vitamins. Even a slight lack of Vitamin C, for example, the vitamin most plentiful in fresh fruit and vegetables, is thought to increase significantly our susceptibility(敏感度) to colds and influenza. The vitamins necessary for a healthy body are normally supplied by a good mixed diet, including a variety of fruit and green vegetables. It is only when people try to live on a very restricted diet, say during extended periods of religious fasting(斋戒), or when trying to lose weight, that it is necessary to make special provision to supply the missing vitamins.1. Scurvy is a disease that is provoked by ____A. salted meat and biscuitsB. exhaustionC. want of some essential substancesD. lack of fresh vegetables and fruits2. In the last sentence of Paragraph 1, “warded off” could probably be replaced by ____.A. got rid ofB. killedC. avoidedD. cleared away3. To avoid such disease as scurvy, it’s better for us ____.A. not to eat much salted meatB. to supplement our diet with various vitamin pillsC. to have more fresh fruit and vegetablesD. to develop a good dietary habit4. Based on the passage we can safely conclude that if our diet is not comprehensive enough ____.A. vitamin pills are of no availB. nutritious food might be unhealthyC. vegetable leaves can be a good remedyD. religious fasting may help out a lot5. Which of the following sentences best expresses the central ideal of the passage?A. Deficiencies of Vitamin C may cause serious diseases.B. Fresh fruit and green vegetables contain enough nutrition that is necessary for a healthy body.C. Vitamins play a vitally important role in people’s health.D. A good mixed diet normally supplies sufficient vitamins for us.2In a society such as the United States or Canada, which has many national, religious, and cultural differences, people highly value individualism—the differences among people. Teachers place a lot of importance on the qualities that make each student special. The educational systems in these countries show these values. Students do not memorize information. Instead, they work individually and find answers themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age, students learn to form their own ideas and opinions. In most Asian societies, by contrast, the people have the same language, history, and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of the Orient reflets society’s belief in group goals and purposes rather than individualism. Children in China, Japan, and Korea often work together and help one another on assignments. In the classroom, the teaching methods are often very formal. The teacher lectures, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students recite rules or information that they have memorized. There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these systems of education. For example, one advantage to the system in Japan is that students there learn much more math and science than American students learn by the end of high school. They also study more hours each day and more days each year than North Americans do. The system is difficult, but it prepares students for a society that values discipline and self control. There is, however, a disadvantage. Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information that they have memorized. The advantage of the educational system in North America, on the other hand, is that students learn to think for themselves. The system prepares them for a society that values creative ideas. There is, however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from high school, they haven’t memorized as many basic rules and facts as students in other countries have.6. The reason why American teachers attach much importance to individualism is that ____.A. they are required to do soB. their students do not memorize informationC. the United States is a country of multicultureD. their students work individually7. Which of the following statements applies to Asian methods of education?A. Each child in a classroom draws a different picture.B. Students have to find information themselves.C. Students are prepared for a society that values discipline.D. Teachers serve as a guide in discussion.8. An ideal educational system would be the one that ____.A. have more advantagesB. is the combination of Western and Oriental methodsC. is based on the Western systemD. rests on the Asian system9. The author is convinced that ____.A. different educational systems reflect different culture of the societiesB. students from Western countries are creative but selfishC. Asian students are merely interested in math and scienceD. there are more advantages to Western system of education than to Oriental one10.The author focuses on ____.A. the differences in methods of education between Orient and WestB. the advantages and disadvantages to both of the Western and Asian educational systemC. how Asian school systems reflect group goalsD. how Western school systems mirror the value of individualism3Auctions are public sales of goods, conducted by an officially approved auctioneer. He asks the crowd assembled in the auction room to make offers, or “bids”, for the various items on sale. He encourages buyers to bid higher figures, and finally names the highest bidder as the buyer of the goods. This is called “knocking down” the goods, for the bidding ends when the auctioneer bangs a small hammer on a table at which he stands. This is often set on a raised platform called a rostrum(台子).The ancient Romans probably invented sales by auction, and the English word comes from the Latin auction, meaning “increase”. The Romans usually sold in this way the spoils taken in war.Practically all goods whose qualities vary are sold by auction. Among these are coffee, hides, skins, wool, tea, cocoa, furs, spices, fruit and vegetables and wines. Auction sales are also usual for land and property, antique furniture, pictures, rare books, old china and similar works of art.The auctioneer must know fairly accurately the current market values of the goods he is selling, and he should be acquainted with regular buyers of such goods. He will not waste time by starting the bidding too low. He will also play on the rivalries among his buyers and succeed in getting a high price by encouraging two business competitors to bid against each other. It is largely on his advice that a seller will fix a “reserve” price, that is, a price belowwhich the goods cannot be sold. Even the best auctioneers, however, find it difficult to stop a “knock out”, whereby dealers illegally arrange beforehand not to bid against eachother, but nominate one of themselves as the only bidder, in the hope of buying goods at extremely low prices. If such a “knock out” comes off, the real auction sale takes place privately afterwards among the dealers. The auctioneer’s services are paid for in the form of a percentage of the price the goods are sold for.11.Auction goods are sold ____.A. in a competitive wayB. at a bargain priceC. for a higher price offeredD. at a moderate price12. The end of the bidding is called “knocking down” because ____.A. the auctioneer bangs down the table at which he stands with a hammerB. the goods are knocked down by the auctioneerC. the rostrum is knocked down at the end of the biddingD. the auctioneer bangs the table with a hammer to end the bidding13.People can buy the following goods from auction sales except ____.A. peltB. artC. prisoner of warD. property14.A “knock out” is arranged ____.A. to help the auctioneer to sell the goods for a better priceB. for the purpose to keep the price in the auction room lowC. to benefit the owners of the goodsD. in order to encourage buyers to bid higher figures15.It can be inferred from the passage that ____.A. auction sales were initially conducted in Rome in wartimeB. in order to begin the bidding moderately, the auctioneer should be kept informed of current market quotationsC. the higher prices an auctioneer gets for the goods he sells the more profits he earns for himselfD. an auctioneer is often in a rivalry with his buyers4As many as one thousand years ago in the Southwest, the Hopi and Zuni tribes of North America were building with adobe—sun baked brick plastered with mud. Their homes looked remarkablly like modern apartment houses. Some were four stories high and contained quarters for perhaps a thousand people, along with storerooms for grain and other goods. These buildings were usually put up against cliffs, both to make construction easier and for defense agaisnt enemies. They were really villages in themselves, as later Spanish explorers must have realized since they called them “pueblos,” which is Spanish for town. The people of the pueblos raised what are called “the three sisters”—corn, bean, and squash(南瓜). They made excellent pottery and wove marvelous baskets, some so fine that they could hold water. The Southwest has always been a dry country, with water scarce. The Hopi and Zuni brought water from streams to their fields and gardens through irrigation ditches. Water was so important that it played a major role in their religion. They developed elaborate ceremonies and religious rituals(仪式) to bring rain. The way of life of less settled groups was simpler and more strongly influenced by nature. Small tribes such as the Shoshone and Ute wandered the dry and mountainous lands between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. They gathered seeds and hunted small animals such as rabbits and snakes. In the Far North the ancestors of today’s Inuit hunted seals, walruses, and the great whales. They lived right on the frozen seas in shelters called igloos(圆顶冰屋) built of blocks of packed snow. When summer came, they fished for salmon and hunted the lordly caribou. The Cheyenne, Pawnee, and Sioux tribes, known as the Plains Indians, lived on the grasslands between the Rocky Mountains and the Mississippi River. They hunted the bison, commonly called the buffalo. Its meat was the chief food of these tribes, and its hide was used to make their clothing and the covering of their tents and tepees(圆锥形帐篷).16.The dwellings of the Hopi and Zuni were ____.A. very crowdedB. extremely crudeC. highly advancedD. located on plains17.The phrase “the three sisters” in the second paragraph refers to ____.A. important cropsB. 2019年计算机等级考试:决胜四级简答(4)
2019年计算机等级考试:决胜四级简答(4)Last year's economy in the United States should have won the Oscar(奥斯卡奖) for best picture. Growth in gross domestic product was 4.1 percent; profits soared up; exportsflourished; and inflation (通货膨胀)stayed around 3 percent for the third year. So why did so many Americans give the picture only a B rating? The answer is jobs. The macroeconomic(宏观经济的) situation was good, but the microeconomic(微观经济的) numbers were not. Yes, 3 millionnew jobs were there, but not enough of them were permanent, good jobs paying enough to support a family. Job insecuritywas not good. Even as they announced higher sales and profits, corporations acted as if they were in a loss, cutting 516,069 jobs in 1994 alone, almost as many as in the bad year of 1991. Yes, unemployment went down. But over 1 million workers wereso discouraged they left the labor force. More than 6 million who wanted full瞭ime work were only partially employed; and another large group was either sheltered behind self瞖mployment. We lost a million good manufacturing jobs between 1990 and 1995, continuing the trend that has reduced the blue collar work force from about 30 percent in the 1950s to about half that today. White collar workers found out they were no longer secure. In 1995, for the first time, they were let goin numbers virtually equal to those for blue collar workers. Many turn to temporary work—with lower pay, fewer benefitsand less status. All this is a country where people meetingfor the first time say, “What do you do?” Questions: 1.What is the economic problem facing United States? 2. What isthe meaning of the word “soar” in Paragraph One? 3. What are the two problems a newly瞖mployed will be most likely to find? 4. For the last four decades, who have been more vulnerable(易受影响的) to unemployment?5. What does “those” in Paragraph three refer to? 答案部分短文大意ケ疚闹饕谈论美国的就业形势。
四级阅读专项练习含答案
In 1993 New York State ordered stores to charge a deposit on beverage (饮料)containers. Within a year. Consumers had returned millions of aluminum cans and glass and plastic bottles. Plenty of companies were eager to accept the aluminum and glass as raw materials for new products. But because few could figure out what to do with the plastic, much of it wound up buried in landfills (垃圾填埋场). The problem was not limited to New York. Unfortunately, there were too few uses for second-hand plastic.Today, one out of five plastic soda bottles is recycled (回收利用)in the United States. The reason for the change is that now there are dozens of companies across the country buying discarded plastic soda bottles and turning them into fence posts, paint brushes, etc.As the New York experience shows, recycling involves more than simply separating valuable materials from the rest of the rubbish. A discard remains a discard until somebody figures out how to give it a second life-and until economic arrangements exist to give that second life value. Without adequate markets to absorb materials collected for recycling, throwaways actually depress prices for used materials.Shrinking landfill space, and rising costs for burying and burning rubbish are forcing local governments to look more closely at recycling. In many areas, the East Coast especially, recycling is already the least expensive waste-management option. For every ton of waste recycled, a city avoids paying for its disposal, which, in parts of New York, amounts to saving of more than $100 per ton. Recycling also stimulates the local economy by creating jobs and trims the pollution control and energy costs of industries that make recycled products by giving them a more refined raw material.36.What regulation was issued by New York State concerning beverage containers?A)Beverage companies should be responsible for collecting and reusing discarded plastic soda bottles.B)Throwaways should be collected by the state for recycling.C)A fee should be charged on used containers for recycling.D)Consumers had to pay for beverage containers and could get their money back on returning them.37.The returned plastic bottles in New York used to ________.A)end up somewhere undergroundB)be turned into raw materialsC)have a second-life valueD)be separated from other rubbish38.The key problem in dealing with returned plastic beverage containers is ________.A)to sell them at a profitable priceB)how to turn them into useful thingsC)how to reduce their recycling costsD)to lower the prices for used materials39.Recycling ahs become the first choice for the disposal of rubbish because ________.A)local governments find it easy to manageB)recycling ahs great appeal for the joblessC)recycling causes little pollutionD)other methods are more expensive40.It can be concluded from the passage that ________.A)rubbish is a potential remedy for the shortage of raw materialsB)local governments in the U. S. can expect big profits from recyclingC)recycling is to be recommended both economically and environmentallyD)landfills will still be widely used for waste disposal答案:36.C 37.D 38.C 39.B 40.AThere are two methods of fighting, the one by law, the other by force; the first method is that of men, the second of beasts; but as the first method is often insufficient, one must have recourse to the second. It is, therefore, necessary for a prince to know well how to use both the beast and the man. This was covertly taught to rulers by ancient writers, who related how Achilles and many others of those ancient princes were given to Chiron the centaur to be brought up and educated under his discipline. The parable of this semi animal, semi human teacher is meant to indicate that a prince must know how to use both natures, and that the one without the other is not durable.A prince, being thus obliged to know well how to act as a beast, must imitate the fox, and the lion, for the lion cannot protect himself from traps, and the fox cannot defend himself from wolves. Those that wish to be only lions do not understand this. Therefore, a prudent ruler ought not to keep faith when by doing so it would be against his interest, and when the reasons which made him bind himself no longer exist. If men were all good, this precept would not be good ; butas they are bad, and would not observe their faith with you, so you are not bound to keep faith with them. Nor have legitimate grounds ever failed a prince who wished to show colorable excuse for the nonfulfilment of his promise. Of this one could furnish an infinite number of examples, and show how many times peace has been broken, and how many promises rendered worthless, by the faithlessness of princes, and those that have best been able to imitate the fox have succeeded best. But it is necessary to be able to disguise this character well, and to be a great feigner and dissembler, and men are so simple and so ready to obey present necessities, that the one who deceives will always find those who allow themselves to be deceived.1.The author of the passage does not believe that ____.A) people can protect themselvesB) the truth makes men freeC) leaders have to be consistentD) princes are human2.The lion represents those who are ____ .A) too trusting B) strong and carefulC) reliant on force D) lacking in intelligence3.The fox, in this passage, is ____.A) admired for his trickery B) no match for the lionC) pitied for his trick D) considered worthless4.The writer suggests that a successful leader must ____.A) be prudent and faithfulB) cheat and lieC) have principle to guide his actionsD) tell the people the truth about his opponent5.The writer would approve an unsuccessful political candidate ____.A) gave up all his opportunitiesB) promised to try again next timeC) overthrew the government by forceD) told the people the truth about his opponent答案与解析:1.D。

staff so busy, it does not require any extraordinary talent to help you to take one or two little things and escape unnoticed. It is known, in the business, as "hoisting". But the hoisting game is not what it used to be. Even at the height of the sales, shoplifters today never know if they are being watched by one of those evil little balls that hang from the ceilings of so many department stores above the most desirable goods. As if that was not trouble enough for them, they can now be filmed at work and obliged to attend a showing of their performance in court. Selfridges was the first big London store to install closed-circuit videotape equipment to watch its sales floors. In October last year the store won its first court case for shoplifting using a evidence a videotape clearly showing a couple stealing dresses. It was an important test case which encouraged other stores to install similar equipment. When the balls, called sputniks, first make an appearance in shops, it was widely believed that their only function was to frighten shoplifters. Their somewhat ridiculous appearances, the curious holes and red lights going on and off, certainly make the theory believable. It did not take long, however, for serious shoplifters to start showing suitable respect. Soon after the equipment was in operation at Selfridges, store detective Brian Chadwick was sitting in the control room watching a woman secretly putting bottles of perfume into her bag. "As she turned to go," Chadwick recalled, "she suddenly looked up at the 'sputnik' and stopped. She could not possibly have seen that the camera was trained on her because it is completely hidden, but she must have had a feeling that I was looking at her." "For a moment she paused, but then she returned to counter and started putting everything back. When she had finished, she opened her bag towards the camera to show it was empty and hurried out of the store." 1. January is a good month for shoplifters because ________. [A] they don't need to wait for staff to serve them [B] they don't need any previous experience as thieves [C] there are so many people in the store [D] January sales offer wonderful opportunities for them 2. The sputniks hanging from the ceiling are intended ________. [A] to watch the most desirable goods [C] to frighten shoplifters by their appearance

计算机等级考试:决胜四级简答2 计算机等级考试:决胜四级简答(2)Impressionism is a form of art that began in the 1870#39;s. When you look closelyat an impressionist painting, you see little dots of different colored paints. When you move away from the picture, the dots of colors blend together and the painting looks like it has light playing on the people and objects in the picture. Impressionist art is different from traditional art. Traditional painterswere interested in the form of objects. The impressionists were interested in lightand color. The impressionist painters wanted to paint natural light that was livelyand bright. They tried to express the feeling of pure sunshine in their paintings. When traditional artists mixed paints, they could not create the feeling of bright, natural light. Therefore, instead of mixing colors, the impressionists used small dots of pure colors. The viewers#39; eyes put these unmixed colors together the same way they add color in light together. When you look at an impressionist painting,it feels the same as when you look at an object in lively, natural sunlight.? Traditional painters worked inside. Impressionist painters workedoutsidebecause they wanted to paint the effect of sunlight on objects. Monet, for example, made a series of paintings of a haystack. Every morning he went to a field with eightor ten paintings. All day, he sat in front of a haystack painting. Every hour heworked on a different picture. All of these paintings are pictures of the haystack, but they do not look the same. Monet made his paintings directly from the changingof nature, especially from different hours of sunlight. His study of the haystackis an hour?by?hour record of the artistry(艺术性) of light.Questions:1. It is only when people try to live on a very restricted diet, say during extended periods of religious fasting(斋戒), or when trying to lose weight, that it is necessary to make special provis ion to supply the missing vitamins.1. Scurvy is a disease that is provoked by ____A. salted meat and biscuitsB. exhaustionC. want of some essential substancesD. lack of fresh vegetables and fruits2. In the last sentence of Paragraph 1, “warded off” could probably be replacedby ____.A. got rid ofB. killedC. avoidedD. cleared away3. To avoid such disease as s curvy, it’s better for us ____.A. not to eat much salted meatB. to supplement our diet with various vitamin pillsC. to have more fresh fruit and vegetablesD. to develop a good dietary habit4. It is largely on his advice that a seller will fix a “reserve” price, that is, a price below which the goods cannot be sold. Even the best auctioneers, however, find it difficult to stop a “knock out”, whereby dealers illegally arrange beforehand not to bidagainst eachother, but nominate one of themselves as the only bidder, in the hope of buying goods at extremely low prices. If such a “knock out”comes off, the real auction sale takes place privately afterwards among the dealers. The auctioneer’s services are paid for in the form of a percentage of the price the goods are sold for.11.Auction goods are sold ____.A. in a competitive wayB. at a bargain priceC. for a higher price offeredD. at a moderate price12.
