Answer the questions by choosing A, B, C or D.People all over the world today are beginning to hear and learn more and more about the problem of pollution. Pollution is caused either by man’s release of completely new and often artificial substances into the environment or by releasing greatly increased amounts of a natural substance, such as oil from oil tankers into the sea.The whole industrial process which makes many of the goods and machines we need and use in our daily lives, is bound to create a number of waste products which upset the environmental balance. Many of these waste products can be prevented for disposed of sensibly, but clearly while more and more new and complex goods are produced there will be new, dangerous waste to be disposed of, for example, the waste products from nuclear power stations. Many people, therefore, see pollution only part of a larger and more complex problem, that is, the whole process of industrial production and consumption of goods. Others again see the problem mainly in connection with agriculture, where new methods are helping farmers grow more and more on theirland to feed our ever-increasing populations. However, the land itself is gradually becoming worn out as it is being used, in some cases, too heavily, and artificial fertilizers cannot restore the balance.Whatever its underlying reasons, there is no doubt that much of the pollution caused could be controlled if any companies, individuals and governments would make more efforts. In the home there is an obvious need to control litter and waste. Food comes wrapped up three or four times in packages that all have to be disposed of; drinks are increasingly sold in bottles or cans which cannot be reused. These not only cause a litter problem, but also are a great waste of resources, in terms of glass, metals and paper. Advertising has helped this process by persuading many of us not only to buy things that we neither want nor need, but also to throw away much of what we do buy. Pollution and waste combine to be a problem everyone can help solve by cutting out unnecessary buying, excess consumption and careless disposal of the products we use in our daily lives.31. The text is mainly about _______.[A] the causes and preventive measures of pollution[B] the impacts of pollution on agricultural production[C] the role of advertising in the control of pollution[D] the link between the industrial process and pollution32. According to some people, the environmental balance is upset because ________.[A] pollutions have greatly increased[B] resources have gradually decreased[C] industrialization produces dangerous wastes[D] agriculture leads to the wrong use of land33. Many people are of the opinion that pollution cannot be ________.[A] prevented sensibly [B] controlled with ease[C] viewed as complicated [D] looked at in isolation34. With respect to fighting pollution it is implied that ________.[A] litter is obviously under control [B] efforts made are far from enough[C] governments need to take the lead [D] packaging of food must be stopped35. Advertising helps to cause pollution in that it encourages unnecessary ________.[A] wrapping [B] processing [C] consumption [D] productionAt political gatherings, he is treated like a pop star. Young girls scream, young men shouted his name and everyone from small children to the elderly pushes closer to get a glimpse of the man. For the last four years, in stadiums and community halls, on farms and on soccer fields, Nelson Mandela has traveled South Africa and the world promoting his vision of racial reconciliation. His tireless campaigning and his insistent commitment to the cause of non-racialism have won him a Nobel Prize and made him a global symbol of hope in the post-Cold-War era of ethnic conflicts and instability. But now with the election behind him, Mandela must transform the dream that has sustained him into the reality of a new, multi-racial South Africa. In the four years since he emerged from prison, he has led the push for democracy with a determination and vision that have left his leadership unchallenged. Although he lives in a suburb of Johannesburg, where the upper class lives, he has retained the respect of his country’s poor masses. He has met with the general staffs of both the South African defense force and the national police force, which some suspect has secretly cooperated with white extremists, and alsoheld talks with leaders of the right wing. Talking to foreign reporters last week, Mandela said he does not intend to ban the extremist white organizations the way the former government banned his organization, the African National Congress. At the same time, however, Mandela made it clear that he will not tolerate disobedience in his government.Tall and dignified, with the erect bearing of a king, Mandela seems destined to become the President. “Right from the outset Nelson had a presence; he always made an impression on anybody that met him because of his sincerity and strong will,” says one activist who has known Mandela since the 1940s, when he emerged as an energetic young figure on the political and social scenes.36. By the time the text was published, Nelson Mandela’s official position had been _______.[A] the South African President-elect[B] a candidate for South African President[C] the South African President[D] a nominee for Nobel Peace Prize37. The author mentions all of the following facts about Nelson Mandela EXCEPT that _______.[A] he is a Nobel Prize winner[B] he is a former prisoner[C] he is a South African pop star[D] he is tall and dignified38. Nelson Mandela has won the admiration of the South African people especially because he_______.[A] loves all the people [B] travels and speaks[C] behaves like a pop star [D] fights against racism39. According to the article, in the four years after he got out of prison Mandela did not ________.[A] oppose racial tolerance in public [B] lead a movement for democracy[C] hold talks with foreign reporters [D] ban extremist white organizations40. In the last paragraph, means “right from the outset” ________.[A] at the first sight [B] right from the outside[C] at the very beginning [D] right from the appearanceFifteen years ago, I entered the Boston Globe, which was a temple to me then. It wasn’t easy getting hired. But once you were there, I found, you were in.Globe jobs were for life guaranteed until retirement. For 15 years I had prospered there—moving from an ordinary reporter to foreign correspondent and finally to senior editor. I would have a lifetime of security if I stuck with it. Instead, I had made a decision to leave. I entered my boss’s of- rice. Would he rage? I wondered. He had a famous temper. “Matt, we have to have a talk.” I began awkwardly. “I came to the Globe when I was twenty-four. Now I’ m forty. There’s a lot I want to do in life. I’m resigning.”“To another paper?”he asked. I reached into my coat po cket, but didn’t say anything. I handed him a letter that explained everything. It said that I was leaving to start a new media company. We were at a rare turning point in history. I wanted to be directly engaged in the change. “I’m glad for you,” he said, quite out of my expectation. “I just came from a board of directors meeting and it was seventy-five percent discouraging news. Some of that we can deal with. But much of it we can’t,” he went on. “I wish you all the luck in the world,” he concluded. “And if it doesn’t work out, remember, your star is always high here.”Then I went out of his office, walking through the newsroom for more good-byes. Everybodywas saying congratulations. Everybody--even though I’d be risking all on an unfamiliar venture: all the financial security I had carefully built up.Later, I had a final talk with Bill Taylor, chairman and publisher of the Boston Globe. He had turned the Globe into a billion-dollar property. “I’m resigning, Bill,” I said. He listened while I gave him the story. He wasn’t looking angry or dismayed either. After a pause, he said, “Golly, I wish I were in your shoes.”41. From the passage we know that the Globe is a famous ________.[ A ] newspaper [ B ] magazine [ C ] temple [ D ] church42. If the writer stayed with the Globe _________.[ A ] he would be able to realize his lifetime dreams[ B ] he would let his long-cherished dreams fade away[ C ] he would never have to worry about his future life[ D ] he would never be allowed to develop his ambitions43. For each of them there are four choices markedA), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and write the correspondingletter on the Answer Sheet.Happiness is the only true measure of personal success. Making other people happy is the highest expression of success, but it's almost impossible to make others happy if you're not happy yourself. With that in mind, here are nine small changes that you can make to your daily routine that will immediately increase the amount of happiness in your life:1. Start each day with expectation. If there's any big truth about life, it's that it usually lives up to (or down to) your expectations. Therefore, when you rise from bed, make your first thought: "something wonderful is going to happen today." Guess what? You're probably right.2. Take time to plan and prioritize. The most common source of stress is the perception that you've got too much work to do. Rather than obsess about it, pick one thing that, if you get it done today, will move you closer to your highest goal and purpose in life. Then do that first.3. Give a gift to everyone you meet. I'm not talking about a formal, wrapped-up present. Your gift can be your smile, a word of thanks or encouragement, a gesture of politeness, even a friendly nod. And never pass beggars without leaving them something. Peace of mind is worth the spare change.4. Deflect partisan conversations. Arguments about politics and religion never have a "right" answer but they definitely get people all riled up over things they can't control. When such topics surface, bow out by saying something like: "Thinking about that stuff makes my head hurt."5. Assume people have good intentions. Since you can't read minds, you don't really know the "why" behind the "what" that people do. Imputing evil motives to other people's weird behaviors adds extra misery to life, while assuming good intentions leaves you open to reconciliation.6. Eat high quality food slowly. Sometimes we can't avoid scarfing something quick to keep us up and running. Even so, at least once a day try to eat something really delicious, like a small chunk of fine cheese or an imported chocolate. Focus on it; taste it; savor it.8.Turn off "background" TV. Many households leave their TVs on as "background noise" while they're doing other things. The entire point of broadcast TV is to make you dissatisfied with your life so that you'll buy more stuff. Why subliminally program yourself to be a mindless consumer?9. End each day with gratitude. Just before you go to bed, write down at least one wonderful thing that happened. It might be something as small as a making a child laugh or something as huge as a million dollar deal. Whatever it is, be grateful for that day because it will never come again.36.How many notes to make other happy everyday?A. 7B.8C.9D.1037.What can prove you are a successful person?A.wealthB. good appearanceC. happinessD. Enterprise38.which sentence can stand for “expectation”?A.You always want to worry about somethingB.You like to order others do like the way you prefer.C.You feel some pressure from your boss.D.something wonderful is going to happen today.39.What should you do when you meet some arguments?A.You will join them and give a correct answer to the disagreement..B.You will leave when they are talking about the political argument.C.You can say some words to express you are not interest in the topics.D.You may argue with them until you made a perfect answer.40.The 7th point tell us _______________________________.A.Result is more important than process.B.Let go of your worry, you will meet trouble.C.You just try your best to do your job without thinking the result.D.Your bad feeling is decided by someone, not by yourself.(B)An anonymous survey by Harvard's newspaper has revealed a surprising pattern of academic dishonesty among students entering the US university. The survey by The Harvard Crimson was emailed to incoming first year undergraduates; 1,600 students responded. Results showed that at least a tenth of the students polled admitted to having cheated on an exam prior to starting at the university, while almost half admitted to cheating on their homework。

During the exam, the girl sitting next to me whispered something, but I didn’t understand. So I leaned over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me if I had an extra pen. She showed me that hers was out of ink and would not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.Later, after the exam papers had been turned in, the teacher asked me to stay in the room when all the other students were dismissed. As soon as we were alone she began to talk to me about what it meant to grow up; she mentioned how important it was to stand on your own two feet and be responsible for your own acts. For a long time, she talked about honesty and emphasized the fact that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating themselves. She made me promise that I would think seriously about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out of the room wondering why she had chosen to talk to me about all those things.Later on, I found out that she thought I had cheated on the exam. When she saw me lean over to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copying answers from the girl’s exam paper. I tried to explain about the pen, but all she could say was it seemed awfully strange to her that I hadn’t mentioned anything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the exam. Even though I tried to explain that I wad just doing the girl a favor by letting her use my pen, I am sure she continued to believe that I had cheated on the exam.1. So my daughter and I had to stay in a hotel. It cost £12.”Harry was worried. He remembered selling the woman a return ticket. “Come into the office, Madam,” he said politely. “I’ll just check the Jersey timetable for May 22nd.”The woman and her little girl followed him inside. She was quite right, as Harry soon discovered there was no sailing on May 22nd. How could he have made such a careless mistake? He shouldn’t have sold her a ticket for that day. Wondering what to do, he smiled at the child. “You look sunburned,” he said to her. “Did you have a nice time in Jersey?”“Yes,” she answered shyly. “The beach was lovely. And I can swim, too!”“That’s fine,” said Harry. “My little girl can’t swim a bit yet. Of course, she’s only three.”“I’m four,” the child said proudly. “I’ll be four and a half.”Harry returned to the mother. “I remember your ticket, Madam,” he said. “But you didn’t get one for your daughter, did you?”“Er, well --” the woman looked at the child. “I mean … she hasn’t started school yet. She’s only four.”“A child like that must have a ticket, Madam. A child’s return ticket to Jersey costs … let me see … £13.50. So if the railway pays your hotel, you’ll owe £ 1.50. The law is the law, but since the fault was mine …”The woman stood up, took the child’s hand and left the office.6. Remember to write down the answers on the Answer Sheet .California's Higher Education - From American Dream to Dilemma[1] For the Golden State of California, 1960 was a golden year: It was a time of rapid development, and part of this massive development was a system of public higher education.[2] California's higher education prospects of 1960 were built on a distinctive historical foundation. The idea that the state's colleges and universities could – and should – be the source of an informed, responsible citizenry and state leadership had been established by legislators and voters by World War I.[3] Robert Gordon Sproul, president of the University of California, who served from 1930 to 1958, built on this early vision. He set up six campuses statewide as part of a creation of a multi-campus system to meet California's growing demand for higher education.[4] In 1958, Clark Kerr was named president of the University of California system. With Kerr's efforts higher education became part of the California dream. In 1960 the state legislature passed the Donahoe Act, which included a 246-page report, "A Master Plan for Higher Education in California, 1960-1975." On Oct. 17, 1960, Time magazine featured Clark Kerr on its cover as the "Master Planner."[5] The California dream of higher education combined access to higher education with affordability and choice. The new California policy of no tuition was extended to all public colleges and universities statewide. Furthermore, the master plan promoted state-funded student scholarships through a state agency created in 1955, the California Student Aid Commission.[6] California came to provide a high quality of education – the best in the country. A 1966 report by the American Council on Education shows that University of California, Berkeley was the top university at the time in America for overall quality in graduate education. Between 1939 and 1968, 12 professors at UC Berkeley had received the Nobel Prize, the highest number at any university.[7] Resources were made available for the realization of the dream. As part of passing the Donahoe Act in 1960, the California state government approved US$1 billion in funding for higher education facilities. Central to its growth was an expansion of campuses. Between 1964 and 1965 the University of California built three new campuses – at SanDiego, Irvine and Santa Cruz.[8] By 1967, however, the master plan was encountering problems – it was expensive and increasingly seemed not sustainable.[9] State Senator George Deukmejian voiced Republican concerns about higher education. He argued in favor of adding a tuition charge for University of California students and endorsed Governor Ronald Reagan's new "equal education plan." The plan called for a modest tuition of $250 per year for the university and $80 per year in the state colleges.[10] The Republican reform plan included grants or loans to those who could not afford the modest tuition. It was noted that half of the enrolled students came from relatively affluent families. Only about 12 percent came from modest-income families earning $6,000 year or less.[11] Today, California's higher education system struggles with budget cuts and an uncertain future. There are concerns that the public universities are soon going to be "public no more." As education scholar Brendan Cantwell notes, even the preeminent research university, Berkeley, has been hit by budget cuts. At the same time, the state's outstanding private colleges and universities have soared in terms of academic standards, selective admissions, tuition revenues, new construction and federal research grants.[12] The master plan has struggled to keep up. It has gone through many reviews and revisions, the latest of which, in 2017, emphasized improving access and affordability. But the convergence of these trends, combined with fluctuations in the state economy and tax revenues, has turned the Californian dream of higher education into an American dilemma.(603 words)第2⻚页,共11⻚页试卷编号:(每个答案不超过5个单词!)California's Higher Education - From American Dream to Dilemma: An OutlineI.Start of the DreamA. 1 _______________________ formed by World War IB.Robert Gordon Sproul’s 2_______________________II.The Dream YearsA.Clark Kerr’s 3_______________________B. 4 _______________________ of higher educationC.California’s 5_______________________ of educationD.Funding and 6_______________________III.7_______________________ EncounteredA.George Deukmejian’s argument for a 8 _______________________B.9 _______________________ to poor studentsIV.Realities Today: the DilemmaA.Struggles with 10 _______________________B.Struggles with the master planSection B (2*15 = 30 points)Directions:There are 6 passages in this section. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and write it down on the Answer Sheet.Passage OneQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage.[1]What do Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Usher and Lady Gaga have in common apart from being highly popular, and rich, music singers? The answer is they all owe some of their success to people behind the scenes from a relatively small country in northern Europe – Sweden. Ever since ABBA exploded onto the world stage in 1974 by winning the European song contest with their easy-to-sing-along hit “Waterloo”, Swedish groups, and more importantly the people who make the groups what they are, have had a disproportionate influence on modern music. To understand why this should be so it is important to see how Sweden nurtures its musical talent.第3 ⻚页,共 11 ⻚页试卷编号:[2] All Swedish children are encouraged and expected to learn how to appreciate music and play an instrument from kindergarten onwards. After-school music lessons are inexpensive and instruments may be rented. Music education is supported by the government as may be seen by the recent establishment of the Academy of Music and Business (AMB) in southern Sweden by two music producers and teachers, which receives funds for each of the students enrolled in the school. The school aims to develop both creativity and commercial success in young musicians by preparing them for the enormous changes the music industry is facing. Note the second half of the school’s name is “Business.” This is a clear recognition of the fact that in Sweden music making is about making money. In 2011, Sweden’s foreign music sales earned the country US $135 million, which placed it third in the world after the USA and the UK and the highest in the world on a per capita basis.[3] So who are the people responsible for making money out of music and helping the big name stars achieve such popularity? The man credited with starting Sweden’s creative push into modern music is Dag V olle aka Denniz Pop. It is claimed that he discovered the Swedish group Ace of Base in the early 1990s when the group’s demo tape got jammed in his car stereo and he had to listen to it over and over again. He loved the song so much that he decided to release it to the public. Their new title, “All That She Wants” became a smash hit. He subsequently opened a recording studio, Cheiron Studios, and it was there that he produced the debut album for one of the biggest boy bands of the 1990s, Backstreet Boys. V olle worked collaboratively with, and mentored, a number of young songwriters until his death in 1998. Perhaps the best known of these today is Max Martin.[4]Max Martin, whose real name is Martin Karl Sandberg, has written a string of hits for some of the biggest recording artists in the world today. These include Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone,” Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love,” and Britney Spears’ “Baby One More Time.” Other prominent Swedish songwriters and producers include Andreas Carlsson, who co-wrote “Bye Bye Bye” for NSYNC, Shellback, Bloodshy and RedOne, who co-wrote and produced two of Lady Gaga’s biggest hits “Poker Face” and “Bad Romance.” If you have not heard of any of these people maybe it is because the Swedes famously do not like standing out from the crowd, but prefer to work their magic behind the scenes.第4⻚页,共 11⻚页试卷编号:[5] Aside from writing and producing hits, Swedes are also activein other areas of the music business: as sound and video engineers and technicians, the people who make the music sound the way it does; choreographers and directors who put together the all-important videos that accompany songs and often do so much to shape the image of the artist, especially when seen by millions on YouTube; Sweden also has a great number of music teachers and voice coaches, managers, marketers and promoters. The fans who buy the star’s music may be unaware of these teams of people working in collaboration in the background, but these professionals are all crucial for the ultimate success of the artist’s work.[6] One reason why Sweden is so active in the music field may come down to its adaptability. Ola Hakansson, a singer whose career spans fifty years, says, “We’re a small country, so we can’t set any trends, but we’re really good at picking up on other people’s, and we’re really good at mimicking.” A case in point is ABBA, whose records mix jazz, blues, and keyboard style with local folk music, and have sold over 380 million copies.[7] Another reason is that nearly all Swedes are fluent in the music world’s lingua franca – English. In order to be globally successful songs need to be written and performed in English. Swedish groups are well placed to capitalize on their linguistic prowess. Since ABBA, other Swedish artists making waves in the music world include Roxette, The Cardigans, Avicii and Robyn.[8] So the next time you buy a CD or download a song by a band or singer that you like, why not check out who wrote it, who produced it, who directed the dance moves on the video, and who manages the artist. You may not now be so surprised to find that someone from Sweden is behind the effort to create the perfect pop song!(875 words)11. These scenes may look more like an episode of Black Mirror, but the world’s new reality amid the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) is forcing the global society to confront issues beyond the scope of science fiction to revive communities slowly, safely and sustainably.[2] New York may have the Empire State Building, lit up in festive hues to mark holidays big and small, but in Washington’s Petworth neighborhood, residents look to the front lawn of a blue rowhouse to celebrate the passage of time. Pirate ships and undead swashbucklers for Halloween. Cartoonish turkeys for Thanksgiving. Pink and red hearts for Valentine’s Day. Red, white and blue everything for the Fourth of July. Bright rainbows and unicorns to honor Pride.第6⻚页,共 11 ⻚页试卷编号:[3] Hardly a holiday goes uncelebrated. Even the small ones.[4] So when the District announced its stay-at-home order, meant to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus, it was no surprise to neighbors that homeowners Curtis Gilbert and Chris Rowland transformed their Easter Bunny display into a flashy pandemic warning sign.[5] The couple measured a six-foot arrow and propped it up between two rabbits, ensuring they were socially distanced as they held speckled Easter eggs. They wanted the crowds on the green grass of Sherman Circle across the street to see: Even the Easter Bunny was keeping his social distance. “We wanted it to be a friendly reminder that it is a pandemic,” Gilbert said. “But with all the horrible news, we were hoping it would give people a chance to giggle, too.”[6] Even the mayor took notice. On Easter Sunday, D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser tweeted a photo of the bunnies. “Happy Easter!” she wrote, after changing her Twitter username to include the hashtag #StayHomeDC.[7] As the pandemic death toll has continued to climb — and states struggle with how best to keep their residents safe — Gilbert and Rowland said they didn’t feel it was right to jump into their usual rotation of holiday trimmings. Instead they continued on the pandemic theme, hoping it would catch the eye of someone who might need a reminder to wear a face mask or keep their distance from others.[8] Gilbert and Rowland — who have been together for 25 years — were never much for holiday displays before 2013, when they moved into the house. But after the move, the couple realized they would likely get a stream of Halloween trick-or-treaters. They decided to embrace it, putting up a small display of skeletons to signal to neighborhood kids they were open for business.[9] The next year, the skeletons got a pirate ship, assembled with leftover wood from a backyard project. The house quickly became a destination for kids and their families. Although it’s not clear when they will be able to host a similar gathering without fears of clustered crowds and spreading disease, the couple said they hope the whimsical pandemic displays send a similar message to their community: we’re all in this together, even if we have to stand six feet apart.(521 words)16. But I didn’t know what that was. Most people think that when you are good at something, it comes easily to you. But this is what I discovered: just because a subject is difficult to learn, it does not mean you are not good at it. You just have to grit your teeth and work harder to get good at it. Once you do, there’s a strong chance you will enjoy it more than anything else.In eighth grade I took algebra. On one test I got only 36 percent of the answers correct. I failed the next one, too. I started to think, maybe I’m just no good at this. I was lucky enough to have a teacher who didn’t take my bad grades as a judgement of my abilities, but simply as an indication that I should study more. He pulled me aside and told me he knew I could do better. He let me retake the tests, and I pulled my grade up to an A.I studied a lot in college, too. I had moments of panic while sitting underneath the buzzing fluorescent lights in the engineering library on Saturday afternoons, when I worried that I was not able to fully understand thermodynamics. But the guys in my classes had to work just as hard, and I knew that I couldn’t afford to lose confidence in myself. The ones that say that math comes more naturally to men or language would be easier to women are based on a faulty premise: that you can judge a person’s abilities separate from the cultural cues that they have received since they are infants. No man is an island. No woman, is either. Why are we so quick to limit ourselves? It may be true that some people favor the right side of their brain, and others the left. Instead of translating our differences into hard and fast conclusions about the human brain, why can’t we focus instead on how incredibly flexible we are?(357 words)第11 ⻚页,共 11 ⻚页试卷编号:。

One way is to study the clothing other people wear. For thousands of years, people in different parts of the world have worn very different types of clothing. There are four big reasons for this. One reason might be religion. In many Moslem countries, women must wear veils(面纱)t o hide their faces. The veils must be worn in public. Veils are part of the Moslem religion. The second reason is that different materials are used in different countries. For instance, in France the materials used in clothing may be cotton, silk, wool, or many other man-made materials. Most people in China wear cotton. The ways clothes are made are also very different. This is another reason why people dress differently. Western countries rely on machines to make most of their clothing. Someone living in India can use only hand power to make the clothing he needs.World-wide differences in customs also lead to differences in clothing. A Mexican farmer wears a straw hat with a brim(帽沿)up. In China, a farmer wears a straw hat with a brim down. Both hats are used to protect the farmers from the sun. Some of these customs have come down through thousands of years.11. If you want to learn about the differences about people in the world, you_____.A. should know the ways to study other landsB. should know the four big reasons given in the passageC. may study the different types of clothing people wearD. may be surprised by the ways people wear《大学英语1》A卷第 2 页,共 4 页系 专业班级 学号 姓名…………………………密…………………………封………………………线…………………………《大学英语1》A 卷 第 3 页,共 4 页《大学英语1》A卷第 4 页,共 4 页。

First of all, age is very important factor. Japanese managers, for instance, are much older than American managers. So many American companies fail in doing business with the Japanese by sending men far too young to conduct business negotiations in Japan with their Japanese counterparts, who could be their fathers! It is quite an insult to the Japanese. The next point to be remembered is the use of business cards. The business card is not a simple piece of paper in Japan. Every business encounter starts with the exchange of business cards. The business card represents the person himself. You should receive it and study it with great care, when it is given to you. The first thing you should do as soon as you've arrived in Japan is to have 200 business cards printed for yourselfThe last point I want to draw your attention to is about business meetings or negotiations. First of all, don't talk too much. Japan's culture is essentially a non-verbal one. And don't expect the Japanese businessmen to answer you with a clear '"yes" or "no". It often takes a long time to make a decision, or to arrive at a solution.Choose the best answers to the following questions.l.In the sixth line of the first paragraph, “counterparts" stands for a group of people who .A. Conduct business abroadB. participate in negotiationC. Yet, several international organizations say golf courses damage the environment. One environment group, the Worldwatch Institute, has published a report about the problems with golf courses. It says studies show that most golf courses use large amounts of chemical poison and fertilizers. The grass often grows in sandy soil which fail to absorb the chemicals. So the chemicals pollute natural water supplies.Golf courses also require a lot of water A study shows that one golf course in Thailand uses as much water as that needed by 6000 people.Environmentalists also fear that the expansion of golf courses will destroy natural areas. In Vietnam, the government sold a protected rainforest, Thu Due forest near Saigon, to a golf course developer In Laos, a Thai company recently won approval for building a golf course and a hotel in one of the country's few remaining underdeveloped areas. The Worldwatch Institute says golf courses are the fastest growing kind of land development in the world. There are about 25,000 golf courses throughout the world.Ibgethei; they already cover an area about the size of Belgium.Choose the best answers for the following statements.1.The sandy soil .A.can pollute natural water suppliesB.is rather poor in absorbing chemicalsC.is the best place to build golf courses.D.Can take a large amount of fertilizer2.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?A.Golf courses consume a lot of waterB.Each year many new golf courses are built.C.There is grass growing on the golf course.D.There are many golf courses in Belgium.3.We can infer from the passage thatA.golf courses already cover a large areaB.underdeveloped areas should be protectedC.the forest near Saigon is well protected areaD.golf courses development is speeding up4.The author^ purpose in writing the passage isA.to warn against the fast expansion of golf coursesB.to explain how to limit golf gamesC.to show how to protect the environmentD.to criticize golf course developers5.Golf courses may bring many problems EXCEPT .A.consuming much waterB.destroy natural areasC.poisoning sandy soilD.polluting water suppliesPART TWO (48 points)V Dictate the following passage which would be four times. What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear. We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental (心理的) exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists(心理学家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive (helpful) things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did.” or “You are such a smart child.”Choose the right answer according to the passage.1. The words “intelligent” and “brilliant” in the first paragraph probably mean _______ while “dull” in the second paragraph means ________.A. bright and splendid; slow in thinking and understandingB. pretty and handsome; ordinary-lookingC. great and important; commonD. hopeful and helpful; careless2. According to the context we can guess that a genius is ________ while an idiot is ________.A. a normal person; a funny personB. a strong person; a weak personC. a highly intelligent person; a foolish or weak-minded personD. a famous person; an ordinary person3. A person ________ is more likely to become a genius.A. whose parents are cleverB. often thinking about difficult problemsC. often helped by his parents and teachersD. born with a good brain and putting it into active use4. It is better for parents ________.A. to praise and encourage their children more oftenB. to be hard on their childrenC. to leave their children alone with nothing to doD. to give their children as much help as possible5. Which of the following is NOT true according to the article?A. Parents play an important part in their children’s growth.B. The less you use your mind the duller you may become.C. Intelligence is obviously the result of where and how you live.D. What makes a person bright or stupid is still under discussion.Task 2It is known to us that English is not as old as Chinese, but it is widely used by most people all over the world. English speakers enjoy creating new words. In fact, a majority of words are traceable(可追踪的)and each of them may have an interesting story. However, no one will really care where a word comes from because it makes little difference in using them in our daily life. Did you ever feel confused about why hamburgers are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham(火腿)?About a hundred years ago, some men went to American from Europe, coming from a big city in Germany called Hamburg. They didn't know how to use English properly. Seen them eating round pieces of beef and asked what it was, the Germans didn't understand the questions exactly, they answered: “we come from Hamburg. “One of the Americans was an owner of a restaurant and got an idea. He cooked some round pieces of bread with beef and began selling them. Such bread came to be called “hamburgers”. Today, hamburgers are welcomed by lots of people coming from different nationalities(民族).Choose the right answer according to the passage.6. According to the text, English is __ .A) older than ChineseB) as old as ChineseC) not so old as ChineseD) very hard to learn7. After reading this story, we know the word “hamburger” comes from ____.A) China because it has a long historyB) English because Germans don't speak EnglishC) English speakers because they love eating itD) America because they give it that nameTask 3The most important thing to remember about the weather in Britain is that it often changes. You can wake up to a beautiful blue sky and then it starts raining during breakfast. Similarly, you may decide not to go f or a picnic because it‘s too wet —then later it’s fine. As it is not very common in Britain to have long periods when the weather stays the same day after day, the kind of weather you get will depend not only on the time of year, but also on luck. The weather in Britain may explain a lot about what you find here. For example, the opportunities for people to meet outside depend a lot on the weather, so you won‘t see people meeting and spending time together outdoors as much as you do in hotter countries. This may give some visitors the idea that the British are not very friendly. The weather helps to explain eating customs(习俗)too; a large hot breakfast, for example, is a good idea on a cold dark morning.Foreigners are often amused(感到好笑的)that the British spend so much time discussing the weather. An important reason for this is that the climate in Britain is interesting and variable多变的.Because the weather changes frequently(频繁地),there‘s always something to say about it. This is probably the commonest way for strangers to start a conversation. At places like bus stops you might hear conversations start like this:1st person: Lovely day, isn't it?2nd person: Yes, isn't it?Then they go on to talk about what the weather has been like recently or what it‘ll be like next day. Another reason is that the British are reluctant to(不情愿地)converse(谈论)about personal matters with people who are not friends. Mentioning the weather is also a useful way to greet someone you pass on the street; it’s inoffensiv e(无伤害的)to begin a conversation with someone you don‘t know at a social event. A comment on a nice day or a personal complaintabout the rain is an easy way to break the ice.Are the following statements true or false according to the passage? Write T / F accordingly.11()People in Britain can enjoy lovely weather most of the year.12()British people tend to talk about weather quite a lot.13()The eating habits of people in Britain have a lot to do with the weather conditions there.14()The best word we may use to describe the weather in Britain is “predictable”.15()Talking about weather is an inoffensive way to begin a conversation with a stranger in Britain.Task 4Dear Chinese Friends,Tonight, we will soon come to the end of 16 glorious days which we will cherish forever.Thank-you to the people of China, all the wonderful volunteers and BOCOG(奥运会北京组委会)!Through these Games, the world learned more about China, and China learned more about the world. We will long remember the achievements we witnessed here.As we celebrate the success of these Games, let us all together wish the best for the talented athletes who will soon participate in the Paralympic Games(残奥会). They also inspire us.To the athletes tonight: You were true role models. You have shown us the unifying power of sport. Keep that spirit alive when you return home. These were truly exceptional Games! And now, in accordance with tradition, I declare the Games of the XXIX Olympiad closed, and I call upon the youth of the world to assemble four years from now in London to celebrate the Games of the XXX Olympiad.Thank you!Are the following statements true or false according to the passage? A millionaire may give his friend a house in the beautiful suburb. A rich could fly halfway round the world to meet his friends for his birthday party. In this case, generosity is more an action of showing off than a sincere action of giving. And such showing off lacks the most important quality of real generosity: to offer kindness and love without expecting anything in return. Real generosity, when you meet it, is simply so pleasant. And as a quality, it belongs equally to the rich and the poor. A traveler in a faraway place felt it when he shared bread, room, even bed系 班 级 姓 名 学 号 ________密 封 线with a farmer’s family, whose general principle(原则) is “A guest in the house is God in the house”. Another story is about a university student from Oxford. He did something out of his natural sense of generosity when he learned that his roommate couldn’t afford an impossibly expensive textbook, a book which was very rare in second-hand shops. Knowing that his roommate was far too proud to accept such a book as present from him, the rich student bought a new copy for 35 pounds at Blackwell’s bookshop. He dirtied it up a bit and tore off the paper cover, m ade a few dog-ears(卷页) and pencil marks against what he thought might be important parts, and wrote aninvented name in the front. He even remembered to age the ink by putting it over fire. Then he went back, looking extremely proud of himself and claiming(声称) to have got the book in asecond-hand bookshop. “Beaten them down two pounds!” To make his friend believe him, he showed a receipt(收据) for the money by buying himself another book at the same place. Ten yearslater, the poorer student got to know the truth. Actually he was suspicious(怀疑的) at the verybeginning, though he didn’t force his richer friend to tell the truth. He appreciated the invaluable generosity as well as the valuable book. Real generosity lies in the giver’s thoughtfulness, not its price or wrapping o f the gift. It is one of the things which make us human(通人性的) and should be honored more than we do now.31. A millionaire gives his friend a beautiful house, which is considered as ____ by the author. A. a sincere action of giving B. an action of showing off C. a good example of generosity D. a quality of being kind to others 32. Which of the following is true of real generosity? A. It offers help expecting something in return. B. It’s a quality belonging only to the rich. C. It expresses a sort of simple love to human beings. D. It lies in the giver’s thoughtfulness and kindness. 33. The Oxford student’s generosity to his roommate is shown in ____. A. his efforts to look for the textbook in all the second-hand bookshops B. his wisdom(智慧) to beat the price of the book down to two poundsC. his ability to make the new book look old and cheapD. his consideration of offering the book without hurting roommate’s self -respect 34. The poorer student didn’t force his ric h friend to tell the truth because ____. A. he was too proud to know the fact B. he appreciated his friend’s thoughtfulness C. he was suspicious of the rich student’s intention(动机)D. he didn’t want to know the truth 35. What conclusion can be draw from the passage? A. Real generosity is invaluable. B. A guest in the house is God in the house. C. The word “generosity” has been devalued. D. A gift can’t be judged by its price or wrapping. Task 2 You’ve just been given a major task and wa nt to do it well, but it seems that the minute you get started, you’re interrupted. First, Jane stops by. Then it’s the phone. Later, your boss tells you to drop everything – she’s got a rush job. And you have that meeting at three! All these things are important. If only you could rearrange them without breaking your concentration. And you can! We’ve heard about quality time(黄金时间) at home – why not quality time on the job?Begin by finding out those parts of the day during which you’re most creative. You m ay work best in the morning or in the afternoon. No matter – just find your time and build a wall around it.Say that for you, quality time begins at ten. Focus on your major task then, and don’t let anything interrupt you. If you have a secretary, tell her or him to hold all calls and visitors; if youdon’t, try to ask a colleague to help you. The point is that both outsiders and colleagues will know that you will not be available for a part of each day. Why? Because you are working! Prepare for this speci al block of time as carefully as you would for an important meeting. Don’t waste precious(宝贵的) minutes searching for memos or notes. Be ready to begin precisely at ten, and get the most out of every second. You might like to use your block simply for thinking about aproject, problem or a new idea. Start small – maybe thirty or forty minutes, three times a week, building up to at least an hour. Sure, you’ll have to chip away(削去) at your block a little sometimes, but guard that hour as you would any other valued possession(财产). 36. They are officially classified as harmful and farmers try to keep their numbers down by shooting or poisoning them.Farmers can also call on the services of their local hunt to control the fox population. Hunting consists of pursuing a fox across the countryside, with a group of specially trained dogs, followed by men and women riding horses. When the dogs eventually catch the fox they kill it or a hunter shoots it.People who take part in hunting think of it as a sport; they wear a special uniform of red coats and white trousers, and follow strict codes of behavior. But owning a horse and hunting regularly is expensive, so most hunters are wealthy. It is estimated that up to 100,000 people watch or take part in fox hunting. But over the last couple of decades the number of people opposed to fox hunting, because they think it is brutal (残酷的), has risen sharply. Nowadays it is rare for a hunt to pass off without some kind of confrontation(冲突) between hunters and hunt saboteurs (阻拦者). Sometimes these incidents lead to violence, but mostly saboteurs interfere with the hunt by misleading riders and disturbing the trail of the fox’s smell, which the dogs follow.Noisy confrontations between hunters and saboteurs have become so common that they are almost as much a part of hunting as the pursuit of foxes itself. But this year supporters of fox hunting face a much bigger threat to their sport. (10 points)San Francisco has one of the worst public transportation systems in the United States. The first problem is that the buses and streetcars are never on schedule. You often have to wait thirty minutes or more for your bus. Frequently, several buses going in the same direction arrive at the same time, and then another one may not come for thirty more minutes. Second maintenance is very poor. The buses and streetcars often break down, causing long delays. City officials admit that there is an average of five such breakdowns every day. Furthermore, the buses and streetcars are in terrible condition. They are always dirty, the windows are frequently broken, and the seats are torn. The third problem is the poor attitude of many of the drivers. They refuse to give information about transfer points, they drive like mad, and they show little consideration for the comfort and safety of their passengers. A fourth, and by far the most serious problem is the increase in crime. A police report shows that thefts and assaults (袭击) have increased forty-three percent over the three previous months. In conclusion, because of all these problems, it is becoming increasingly inconvenient and even dangerous to ride public transportation in San Francisco.Part Four Translation (10 points).Directions: Translate the following paragraph from English into Chinese. Scientists say in a few years we will start seeing so-called “social robots” capable of engaging with people.Today’s robots can build cars and explo re underwater objects. But interacting with people is more complex than simply taking an incoming message, says, Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher Cynthia Breazeal.“Social robots really interact with people in ways you feel like you’re int eracting with someone rather than something,” she said. “And social robots are really de signed to engage you in much more of an interaction than feels like a cooperation or partnership.”At the Naval Research Laboratory, near Washington, scientists are researching which features robots should have to be able to live with humans. Researcher Alan Schultz says social robots must be adapted to social situations.“You know if you’re going to have robots out in the wild, so to speak, they have to obey our standards and they have to do things in the way we expect, so that we can move about our environment and not be interrupted by them or have to think hard about the fact that they’re around us,” he said.Social robots do not necessarily have to have a human face. Steve Cousins, the CEO《英语》A卷第7页共12页《英语》A卷第8页共12页of Savioke Robotics in Cupertino, California, says their robot called Botlr is ready being tested in a hotel, delivering small items to people.“It’s designed to be in human spaces and interact with people and around people,” he sa id. “So it interacts with the front desk agent when they’re sending it somewhere. It int eracts with people in the elevator as it’s going along. And, it interacts with people at the door when the delivery arrives.”So far, social robots are limited to very simple tasks like relaying messages or taking family photos. But Cynthia Breazeal, who designed this one, says their abilities may be extended into many different areas.46. What will social robots do according to the scientists?A. Reading Comprehension (20%)Passage 11-5. B D A D CStaggering tasks confronted the people of the United States, North and South, when the Civil War ended. About a million and a half soldiers from both sides had to bedemobilized, readjusted to civilian life, and reabsorbed by the devastated economy. Civil government also had to be put back on a peacetime basis and interference from the military had to be stopped. The desperate plight of the South has eclipsed the fact that reconstruction had to be undertaken also in the North, though less spectacularly. Industries had to adjust to peacetime conditions, factories had to be retooled for civilian needs.Financial problems loomed large in both the North and the South. The national debt had shot up from a modest $65 million in 1861, the year the ear started to nearly $3 billion in 1865, the year the war ended. This was a colossal sum for those days but one that a prudent government could pay. At the same time, war taxes had to be reduced to less burdensome levels.Physical devastation caused by invading armies, chiefly in the South and border states, had to be repaired. This herculean task was ultimately completed, but with discouraging slowness.Other important questions needed answering. What would be the future of the four million black people who were freed from slavery? On what basis were the Southern states to be brought back into the Union? What of the Southern leaders, all of whom were liable to charges of treason? One of these leaders, Jefferson Davis, President of the Southern Confederacy, was the subject of an insulting popular Northern song," Hang Jeff Davis from a Sour Apple Tree." And even children sang it. Davis was temporarily chained in his prison cell during the early days of his two-year imprisonment. But he and the other Southern leaders were finally released, partly because it was unlikely that a jury from Virginia, a Southern Confederate state, would convict them. All the leaders were finally pardoned by President Johnson in 1868 in an effort to help reconstruction efforts proceed with as little bitterness as possible.1. What does the passage mainly discuss?A) Wartime expendituresB) Problems facing the United States after the warC) Methods of repairing the damage caused by the warD) The results of government efforts to revive the economy2. According to the passage, which of the following statements about the damage in the South is correct?A) It was worse than in the North.B) The cost was less than expectedC) It was centered in the border states.D) It was remedied rather quickly.4. The passage refers to all of the following as necessary steps following the Civil War EXCEPT______.A) Helping soldiers readjustB) Restructuring industryC) Returning government to normalD) Increasing taxes5. Which of the following can be inferred from the phrase " … it was unlikely that a jury from Virginia, a Southern Confederate state, would convict them" (last paragraph)?A) Virginians felt betrayed by Jefferson DavisB) A popular song insulted VirginiansC) Virginians were loyal to their leadersD) All of the Virginia military leaders had been put in chains.Passage 26-10. A C B C DAge has its privileges in America. And one of the more prominent of them is the senior citizen discount. Anyone who has reached a certain age—in some cases as low as 55—is automatically entitled to a dazzling array of price reductions at nearly every level of commercial life. Eligi bility is determined not by one’s need but by the date on one’s birth certificate. Practically unheard of a generation ago, the discounts have become a routine part of many businesses—as common as color televisions in motel rooms and free coffee on airliners.People with gray hair often are given the discounts without even asking for them;yet, millions of Americans above age 60 are healthy and solvent. Businesses that would never dare offer discounts to college students or anyone under 30 freely offer them to older Americans. The practice is acceptable because of the widespread belief that “elderly” and “needy” are synonymous .Perhaps that once was true, but today elderly Americans as a group have a lower poverty rate than the rest of the population. To be sure, there is economic diversity within the elderly, and many older Americans are poor, but most of them aren’t. It is impossible to determine the impact of the discounts on individual companies. For many firms, they are a stimulus to revenue. But in other cases the discounts are given at the expense, directly or indirectly, of younger Americans. Moreover, they are a direct irritant in what some politicians and scholars see as a coming conflict between the generations.Generational tensions are being fueled by continuing debate over Social Security benefits, which mostly involves a transfer of resources from the young to the old. Employment is another sore point. Buoyed by laws and court decisions, more and more older Americans are declining the retirement dinner in favor of staying on the job—thereby lessening employment and promotion opportunities for younger workers.Far from a kind of charity they once were, senior citizen discounts have become a formidable economic privilege to a group with millions o f members who don’t need them.It no longer makes sense to treat the elderly as a single group whose economic needs deserve priority over those of others. Senior citizen discounts only enhance the myth that older people cannot take care of themselves and need special treatment;and they threaten the creation of a new myth, that the elderly are ungrateful and taking for themselves at the expense of children and other age groups. Senior citizen discounts are the essence of the very thing older Americans are fighting against—discrimination by age.6. We learn from the first paragraph that____.A) Offering senior citizens discounts has become routine commercial practiceB) Senior citizen discounts have enabled many old people to live a decent lifeC) Giving senior citizens discounts has boosted the market for the elderlyD) Senior citizens have to show their birth certificates to get a discount7. What assumption lies behind the practice of senior citizen discounts?A) Businesses, having made a lot of profits, should do something for society in return.B) Old people are entitled to special treatment for the contribution they made to society.C) The elderly, being financially underprivileged, need humane help from society.D) Senior citizen discounts can make up for the inadequacy of the Social Security system.8. According to some politicians and scholars, senior citizen discounts will___.A) Make old people even more dependent on societyB) Intensify conflicts between the young and the oldC) Have adverse financial impact on business companiesD) Bring a marked increase in the companies revenues9. How does the author view the Social Security system?A) It encourages elderly people to retire in time.B) It opens up broad career prospects for young people.C) It benefits the old at the expense of the youngD) It should be reinforced by laws and court decisions10. Which of the following best summarizes the author’s main argument?A) Senior citizens should fight hard against age discrimination.B) The elderly are selfish and taking senior discounts for granted.C) Priority should be given to the economic needs of senior citizens.D) Senior citizen discounts may well be a type of age discriminationⅥ.
