英国天气实在太古怪了。也许这一刻阳光普照,下一刻就有可能刮风下雨,也可能会下大雪;今天是夏天,明天有可能就变成冬天,也可能是春天。说变就变,刚才还是晴空万里,转眼间就乌云密布,当你还在犹豫出门是不是应该带伞的时候,雨水已经开始亲吻大地了。有时候雨会断断续续下很久,因为常是小雨或中雨,淋一下不要紧。而雨大时风也太大,很容易就能把伞掀翻吹破,所以英国人不爱撑伞,都直接让雨淋着,偶尔看见有撑伞的,也只是上了年纪的老太太。他们和平时一样,迈着同样的步伐,怀着同样的心情,并没有因为天气而发生变化。
英国人见面寒暄以“今天天气”为开场白,和中国人以“吃了么”打招呼一样自然,表明了长期以来,英人对天气的关心程度不亚于国人对吃饭问题的关心。不过现在这种传统似渐渐消失,并非天气变好了,而是交通工具发达,暖气设施无处不在,防水外套花样也不少,人们出门带不带雨具,穿多穿少没多大关系。

Mr. James Scott has a garage in Silbury and now he has just bought another garage in Pinhurst. Pinhurst is only five miles from Silbury, but Mr. Scott cannot get a telephone for his new garage, so he has just bought twelve pigeons. Yesterday, a pigeon carried the first message from Pinburst to Silbury. The bird covered the distance the first three minutes. Up to now, Mr. Scott has sent a great many requests for spare parts and other urgent messages from one garage to the other. In this way, he has begun his own private‘telephone’service. I have just moved to a house in Bridge Street. Yesterday a beggar knocked at my door. He asked me for a meal and a glass of beer. In return for this, the beggar stood on his head and sang songs. I gave him a meal. He ate the food and drank the beer. Then he put a piece of cheese in his pocket and went away. Later a neighbour told me about him. Everybody knows him. His name is Percy Buttons. He calls at every house in the street once a month and always asks for a meal and a glass of beer.
