航空术语的基本定义迎角(Angle of attack) 对于固定翼飞机,机翼的前进方向(相当与气流的方向)和翼弦(与机身轴线不同)的夹角叫迎角,也称为攻角,它是确定机翼在气流中姿态的基准。
对于直升机和旋翼机,迎角的表示方法与固定翼飞机略有不同,它是指与前进方向垂直的轴和旋翼的控制轴之间的夹角。
侧滑角(side slip angle)是指飞机的轴线与飞机的飞行速度方向在水平面内的夹角。
侧滑角是确定飞机飞行姿态的重要参数。
过载(overload)作用在飞机上的气动力和发动机推力的合力与飞机重力之比称为飞机的过载。
飞机所能承受过载的大小是衡量飞机机动性的重要参数。
过载越大,飞机的受力越大,为保证飞机的安全,飞机的过载不能过大。
飞行员在机动飞行中也会因为过载大于一或者小于一而承受超重和失重。
飞行员所能承受的最大过载一般不能超过8。
边条(Strake) 边条是指附加于机身或机翼机身结合处的小翼面,包括机身边条和机翼边条两种。
机身边条位于机身左右两侧,宽度相等;而机翼边条则是位于机翼机身结合处近似三角形的小翼面。
采用边条翼结构可以减少阻力,改善飞机的操作性。
上反角(Dihedral angle) 上反角是指机翼基准面和水平面的夹角,当机翼有扭转时,则是指扭转轴和水平面的夹角。
当上反角为负时,就变成了下反角(Cathedral angle)。
三角翼(Delta wing) 指平面形状呈三角形的机翼。
三角翼的特点是后掠角大,结构简单,展弦比小,适合于超音速飞行。
马赫数(Mach number) 常写作M数,它是高速流的一个相似参数。
我们平时所说的飞机的M数是指飞机的飞行速度与当地大气(即一定的高度、温度和大气密度)中的音速之比。
比如M1.6表示飞机的速度为当地音速的1.6倍。
推力重量比(Thrust-weight ratio)表示发动机单位重量所产生的推力,简称为推重比,是衡量发动机性能优劣的一个重要指标,推重比越大,发动机的性能越优良。

The Shirley + Linear background has been added for slopingbackgrounds∙ The "Shirley + Linear" background is the Shirley background plus astraight line with starting point at the low BE end-point and with a slope value∙ If the slope value is zero , the original Shirley calculation is used∙ If the slope value is positive , the straight line has higher values atthe high BE side, which can be used for spectra with higher background intensities at the high BE side∙ Similarly, a negative slope value can be used for a spectrum withlower background intensities at the high BE side2. The Optimization button may be used when the Shirley background is higher at some point than the signal intensities∙ The program will increase the slope value until the Shirleybackground is below the signal intensities∙ Please see the example below - Cu2p_bg.xps - which showsbackground subtraction using the Shirley method (This spectrum was sent to Dr Kwok by Dr. Roland Schlesinger).∙ A shows the problematic background when the Shirley backgroundis higher than the signal intensities. In the Shirley calculation routine, some negative values were generated and resulted in a non-monotonic increase background∙ B shows a "Shirley + Linear" background. The slope value was inputby trial-and-error until the background was lower than the signal intensities∙ C was obtained using the optimisation routineA slope = 0B slope = 11C slope = 15.17Note: The background subtraction calculation cannot completely remove the background signals. For quantitative studies, the best procedure is "consistency". See Future Versions, (Page 2).TougaardFor a Tougaard background, the program can optimise the B1 parameter by minimising the "square of the difference" of the intensities of ten data points in the high binding energy side of the range with the intensities of the calculated background.Adding/Adjusting the BackgroundNote: The Background MUST be correct before Peaks can be added. As with all backgrounds, the range needs to include as much of your peak as possible and as little of anything else as possible.1. Make sure the file of interest is open and the appropriate region is active2. Click on Background in the upper window∙The Region 0 box comes up, which contains the information about the background3. Adjust the following as necessary. See Note.∙High BE (This value needs to be within the range of your data) ∙Low BE (This value needs to be within the range of your data) NOTE: High and Low BE are not automatically within the range of your data. If the theoretical area ratio is not true for the split peaks, the old way ofsetting two s-type peaks and adding the constraints should be used.∙The S.O.S. stands for spin orbital splitting.Note: The FWHM of the p, d or f peaks are the FWHM of the p3/2,d5/2 or f7/2, respectively. The FWHM of the combined peaks (e.g. combination of p3/2and p1/2) is shown in the actual FWHM in the Peak Parameter Window.Peak Constraints1. Each parameter can be referenced to the same type of parameter inother peaks. For example, for four peaks (Peak #0, 1, 2 and 3) with known relative peak positions (0.5eV between adjacent peaks), the following can be used∙Position: Peak 1 = Peak 0 + 0.5eV∙Position: Peak 2 = Peak 1 + 0.5eV∙Position: Peak 3 = Peak 2 + 0.5eV2. You may reference to any peak except with looped references.3. The optimisation of the %GL value is allowed in this program.∙ A suggestion to use this feature is to find a nice peak for a certain setting of your instrument and optimise the %GL for this peak.∙Fix the %GL in the later peak fitting process when the same instrument settings were used.4. This version also includes the setting of the upper and lower bounds foreach parameter.Peak ParametersThis program uses the following asymmetric Gaussian-Lorentzian sumThe program also uses the following symmetrical Gaussian-Lorentzian product functionPeak FunctionNote:If the selection is the sum function, when the user opens a *.xps file that was optimised using the Gaussian-Lorentzian product function, you have to re-optimise the spectra using the Gaussian-Lorentzian sum function with a different %Gaussian-Lorentzian value.∙You can choose the function type you want1. Each peak in the Gaussian-Lorentzian product function can have fourparameters∙Peak Position∙Area∙FWHM∙%Gaussian-LorentzianSince peak area relates to the atomic concentration directly, we use it as a peak parameter and the peak height will not be shown to the user.Note:For asymmetric peaks, the FWHM only refers to the half of the peak that is symmetrical. The actual FWHM of the peak is calculated numerically and is shown after the actual FWHM in the Peak Parameter Window. If the asymmetric peak is a doublet (p, d or f type peak), the actual FWHM is the FWHM of the doublet.Region ShiftA Region Shift parameter was added under the Parameters menu∙Use this parameter to compensate for the charging effect, the fermi level shift or any change in the system work function∙This value will be added to all the peak positions in the region for fitting purposes.An example:∙ A polymer surface is positively charged and all the peaks are shifted to the high binding energy by +0.5eV, e.g. aliphatic carbon at 285.0eV shifts to 285.5eV∙When the Region Shift parameter is set to +0.5eV, 0.5eV will be added to all the peak positions in the region during peak fitting, but the listed peak positions are not changed, e.g. 285.0eV for aliphatic carbon. Note: I have tried this without any actual shift taking place. If someone finds out how to perform this operation, please let me know. Thanks, CMH.In the meantime, I suggest you do the shift before converting your files from the Vision Software format.OptimisationYou can optimise:1. A single peak parameter∙Use the Optimize button beside the parameter in the Peak Fitting window2. The peak (the peak position, area, FWHM, and the %GL if the "fix" box isnot ticked)∙Use the Optimize Peak button at the base of the Peak Fitting window3. A single region (all the parameters of all the peaks in that region if the"fix" box is not ticked)∙Use the Optimize Region menu (button) in the upper window4. All the regions∙Use the Optimize All button in the lower window∙During any type of optimisation, you can press the "Stop Fitting" button and the program will stop the process in the next cycle.Print/ExportIn the XPS Peak Fit or Region window, From the Data menu, choose Export or Print options as desiredExport∙The program can export the ASCII file of spectrum (*.DAT) for making high quality figures using other software (e.g. SigmaPlot)∙It can export the parameters (*.PAR) for further calculations (e.g. use Excel for atomic ratio calculations)∙It can also copy the spectral image to the system clipboard so that the spectral image can be pasted into a document (e.g. MS WORD). Program Options1. The %tolerance allows the optimisation routine to stop if the change inthe difference after one loop is less that the %tolerance2. The default setting of the optimisation is Newton's method∙This method requires a delta value for the optimisation calculations ∙You may need to change the value in some cases, but the existing setting is enough for most data.3. For the binary search method, it searches the best fit for each parameterin up to four levels of value ranges∙For example, for a peak position, in first level, it calculates the chi^2 when the peak position is changed by +2eV, +1.5eV, +1eV, +0.5eV,-0.5eV, -1eV, -1.5eV, and -2eV (range 2eV, step 0.5eV) ∙Then, it selects the position value that gives the lowest chi^2∙In the second level, it searches the best values in the range +0.4eV, +0.3eV, +0.2eV, +0.1eV, -0.1eV, -0.2eV, -0.3eV, and -0.4eV (range0.4eV, step 0.1eV)∙In the third level, it selects the best value in +0.09eV, +0.08eV, ...+0.01eV, -0.01eV, ...-0.09eV∙This will give the best value with two digits after decimal∙Level 4 is not used in the default setting∙The range setting and the number of levels in the option window can be changed if needed.4. The Newton's Method or Binary Search Method can be selected byclicking the "use" selection box of that method.5. The selection of the peak function is also in the Options window.6. The user can save/read the option parameters with the file extension*.opa∙The program reads the default.opa file at start up. Therefore, the user can customize the program options by saving the selectionsinto the default.opa file.CompatibilityThe program can read:∙Kratos text (*.des) files together with the peak fitting parameters in the file∙The ASCII files exported from Phi's Multiplex software∙The ASCII files of Leybold's software∙The VAMAS file format∙For the Phi, Leybold and VAMAS formats, multiple regions can be read∙For the Phi format, if the description contains a comma ",", the program will give an error. Ensure that the tubing of the refrigerant circuit is not damaged during transportation and installation.Leaking refrigerant may cause eye injuries or ignite.If damage has occurred■Keep naked flames and/or ignition sources away from the appliance,■thoroughly ventilate the room for several minutes,■switch off the appliance and pull out the mains plug,■inform customer service.The more refrigerant an appliancecontains, the larger the room must be in which the appliance is situated. Leaking refrigerant can form a flammable gas-air mixture in rooms which are too small. The room must be at least 1m³ per 8g of refrigerant. The directive specifies the framework for an EU-wide valid return and re-use of old appliances.en6Ambient temperature and ventilationAmbient temperatureThe appliance is designed for a specific climate class. Depending on the climate class, the appliance can be operated at the following temperatures.The climate class can be found on the rating plate. Fig.9NoteThe appliance is fully functional within the room temperature limits of the indicated climatic class. If an appliance of climatic class SNis operated at colder room temperatures, the appliance will not be damaged up to a temperature of +5°C.VentilationFig.2The air on the rear panel and on the side panels of the appliance heats up. Conduction of the heated air must not be obstructed. Otherwise,the refrigerating unit must work harder. This increases power consumption. Therefore: Never cover or block the ventilation openings!Connecting the applianceAfter installing the appliance, wait at least 1 hour until the appliance is switched on. During transportation the oil inthe compressor may have flowed into the refrigeration system.Before switching on the appliance for the first time, clean the interior of the appliance (see chapter “Cleaning the appliance”).Electrical connectionThe socket must be near the appliance and also freely accessible following installation of the appliance.The appliance complies with the protection class I. Connect the appliance to 220–240V/50Hz alternating current viaa correctly installed socket with protective conductor. The socket must be fused with a 10 to 16A fuse.For appliances operated in non-European countries, check whether the statedvoltage and current type match the values of your mains supply. This information can be found on the rating plate. Fig.9ã=WarningNever connect the appliance to electronic energy saver plugs.Our appliances can be used with mains and sine-controlled inverters. Mains-controlled inverters are used for photovoltaic systems whichare connected directly to the national grid. Light is switched on when the door is open.We recommend the medium setting.Operating tips■When the appliance has been switched on, it may take several hours until the set temperatures have been reached.■The fully automatic NoFrost system ensures that the freezer compartment remains free of ice. Defrosting is no longer required.■The sides of the housing are sometimes heated slightly. This preventscondensation in the area of the door seal.■If the freezer compartment door cannot be immediately re-opened after it has been closed, wait until the resulting low pressure has equalised.Setting the temperatureRefrigerator compartmentTurn temperature controller, Fig.1/5, to the required setting.We recommend a medium setting (of e.g.2–3).Higher settings lower the temperature in the refrigerator compartment.Select a higher setting (e.g.4–5) only temporarily if:■the ambient temperature is high,■door is opened frequently,■large quantities of food are placed in the refrigerator compartment.Freezer compartmentThe temperature can be set from -16°C to -24°C.Keep pressing temperature setting button 2 until the required freezer compartment temperature is set.The value last selected is saved. The set temperature is indicated on display 3.en9Usable capacityInformation on the usable capacity can be found inside your appliance on the rating plate. Fig.9Fully utilising the freezer volumeTo place the maximum amount of food in the freezer, all frozen food containers, except the bottom one, can be taken out of the appliance. The food can be stacked directly on the freezer shelves.Removing the fittingsTo remove a frozen food container, pull out all the way, lift at the front and remove. Fig.6Refrigerator compartmentThe refrigerator compartment is the ideal storage location for ready meals, cakes and pastries, preserved food, condensed milk and hard cheese.Storing food■Store fresh, undamaged food. The quality and freshness will then be retained for longer.■In the case of ready-made products and bottled goods, observe the best-before date or use-by date specified by the manufacturer.■To retain aroma, colour and freshness, pack or cover food well before placing in the appliance. This will prevent the transfer of flavours and the discolouration of plastic parts in the refrigerator compartment.■Allow warm food and drinks to cool down before placing in the appliance.NoteAvoid contact between food and rearpanel. Otherwise the air circulation will be impaired.Food or packaging could freeze to the rear panel.Freezer compartmentUse the freezer compartment■To store deep-frozen food.■To make ice cubes.■To freeze food.NoteEnsure that the freezer compartment door has been closed properly. If the door is open, the frozen food will thaw. Thefreezer compartment will become covered in thick ice. Also: waste of energy due to high power consumption!Max. freezing capacityInformation about the max. freezingcapacity within 24 hours can be found on the rating plate. Fig.9en10Freezing and storing foodPurchasing frozen food■Packaging must not be damaged.■Use by the “use by” date.■Temperature in the supermarket freezer must be -18°C or lower.■If possible, transport deep-frozen food in an insulated bag and place quickly in the freezer compartment.Note when loading products■Freeze large quantities of foodpreferably in the very top compartment where food freezes particularly quickly and therefore also gently.■Place the food over the whole area of the compartments or the frozen food containers.NoteFood which is already frozen must not come into contact with the food which is to be frozen. If required, move the frozen food to the frozen food containers.Storing frozen foodInsert frozen food container all the way to ensure unrestricted air circulation.Freezing fresh foodFreeze fresh and undamaged food only.To retain the best possible nutritional value, flavour and colour, vegetables should be blanched before freezing. Aubergines, peppers, zucchini and asparagus do not require blanching.Literature on freezing and blanching can be found in bookshops.NoteKeep food which is to be frozen away from food which is already frozen.■The following foods are suitable for freezing:Cakes and pastries, fish and seafood, meat, game, poultry, vegetables, fruit, herbs, eggs without shells, dairy products such as cheese, butter and quark, ready meals and leftovers such as soups, stews, cooked meat and fish, potato dishes, soufflés and desserts.■The following foods are not suitable for freezing:Types of vegetables, which are usually consumed raw, such as lettuce orradishes, eggs in shells, grapes, whole apples, pears and peaches, hard-boiled eggs, yoghurt, soured milk, sour cream, crème fraîche and mayonnaise.enPacking frozen foodTo prevent food from losing its flavouror drying out, place in airtight containers.1.Place food in packaging.2.Remove air.3.Seal the wrapping.bel packaging with contentsand date of freezing.Suitable packaging:Plastic film, tubular filmmade of polyethylene, aluminium foil, freezer containers.These products are availablefrom specialist outlets.Unsuitable packaging:Wrapping paper, greaseproof paper, cellophane, bin liners and used shopping bags.Items suitable for sealing packaged food: Rubber bands, plastic clips, string, cold-resistant adhesive tape, etc.Bags and tubular filmmade of polyethylene can be sealed with a film heat sealer.Shelf life of frozen foodStorage duration depends on the typeof food.At a temperature of-18°C:■Fish, sausage, ready meals and cakes and pastries:up to6 months■Cheese, poultry and meat:up to8 months■Vegetables and fruit:up to12 months Super freezingFood should be frozen solid as quickly as possible in order to retain vitamins, nutritional value, appearance and flavour. Several hours before placing fresh food in the freezer compartment, switch on super freezing to prevent an unwanted temperature rise.As a rule, 4-6hours is adequate.This appliance runs constantlyand the freezer compartment drops toa very low temperature.If the max.freezing capacity is to be used, super freezing must be switched on for 24hours before the fresh produce is placed in the freezer compartment. Smaller quantities of food (up to2kg) can be frozen without “super freezing”.NoteWhen super freezing is switched on, increased operating noises may occur.Switching on and offFig. 1Press “super” button4.If the super freezing has been switched on the button is lit.Super freezing automatically switches off after approx. 2½ days.enThawing frozen food Depending on the type and application,select one of the following options:■at room temperature■in the refrigerator■in an electric oven, with/without fanassisted hot-air■in the microwaveã=CautionDo not refreeze thawing or thawed food. Only ready meals (boiled or fried) may be refrozen.No longer store the frozen produce for the max. storage period.Interior fittingsShelves and containersYou can reposition the inner shelvesand the containers in the door as required: pull shelf forwards, lower and swivel out to the side. Lift the container and remove.Bottle shelfFig.3Bottles can be stored securely onthe bottle shelf. The holder can be adjusted.Vegetable container with humidity controllerFig.4To create the optimum storage climate for fruit and vegetables, you can set the air humidity in the vegetable container depending on the quantity stored:■smaller quantities of fruit andvegetables – high air humidity■large quantities of fruit and vegetables – low air humidityNotes■Fruit sensitive to cold (e.g. pineapple,banana, papaya and citrus fruit) andvegetables sensitive to cold (e.g.aubergines, cucumbers, zucchini,peppers, tomatoes and potatoes)should be stored outside the refrigerator at temperatures of approx. +8°Cto+12°C for optimum preservationof quality and flavour.■Condensation may form in thevegetable container depending on the type and quantity of products stored.Remove condensation with a dry cloth and adjust air humidity in the vegetable container with the humidity controller.Freezer calendarFig.1/18To prevent the quality of the frozen food from deteriorating, do not exceed the storage duration. The storage period depends on the type of produce.The figures next to the symbols indicate the permitted storage periodof the produce in months. In the caseof commercially available frozen food observe the date of manufacture or use-by date.enIce packFig.1/18If a power failure or malfunction occurs, the ice packs can be used to slow down the thawing process. The longest storage time is obtained by placing the ice pack on the food in the top compartment.To save space, the ice pack can be stored in the door compartment.The ice packs can also be used to cool food temporarily, e.g. in a cold bag.Sticker “OK”(not all models)The“OK” temperature monitorcan be used to determine temperatures below +4°C. The room temperature of the interior heated area must be 50° F (10° C) or higher. The freeze resistant package may be surface or re-cessed mounted. If recess mounted the surface of the cover must be flush with the interior wall surface. The package is furnished with screws for mounting the cover to the box. If the box is recess mounted, do not fasten the top and bottom of the cover to the box. Use the holes on the front only.1.Wall should already be framed for the fountain using the rough-in dimensions shown in Fig's. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or6. Shown dimensions pertain to installation location (framing must support up to 150 Lbs. weight for singlefountain and 300 Lbs. for dual fountains). These dimensions are required for compliance with ANSI Standard A117.1 and ADA (Framing shown for reference).2. Attach wall plate assembly to wall as shown in Fig's. 3, 4, or 6 using 5/16" x 2" long bolts and flat washers(not provided). Tighten securely, (Fastener must match wall type, i.e. lag screws for wood studs, bolts and anchors for masonry construction).3. Install back panel. Place the upper edge of the panel above hanger on the wall. Slide the panel down until itengages the hanger. Be sure back panel is firmly engaged before releasing it.4. Remove bottom access panel from fountain basin and save screws. Install the fountain to the back paneland wall using (4) 5/16" x 3/4" long bolts and washers (provided) thru holes in back panel. A washer is used on the bottom two (2) holes only. Tighten securely.5. Assemble the operating cable to the fountain bracket. (Fountain should be mounted to exterior wall)Create a loop in the cable and thread the free end of the cable through the wall into the freeze resistant box.The adjustment nuts should be in the middle of threaded area on the operating cable. See Figure 7.6.Connect free end of operating cable to the valve-operating bracket. The end of the cables must be recessedinto the indents on the pivot brackets. Remove cable free play by adjusting the jam nuts on the ends of the operating cable. See Figure 7.7.Connect water line from fountain bubbler into freeze resistant box. The connection to the box uses a quickconnect water fitting. Position the water line, in the fountain, to drain back into interior mounted box. Any water left standing, in the exterior line, can freeze . See Fig. 13.To insert tubing, push tube straight into fitting until it reaches a positive stop. To remove tubing from the fittings, relieve water pressure, push in on dark gray collar while pulling out on the tubing. See Figure 12. 8.Connect drain and water supply lines to the freeze resistant fountain. Refer to Figure 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 forcomponent positions. Inline strainer must be used on the inlet water line. See Fig. 11.Start-up1.Turn on building water supply and check all connections for leaks. Repair as required.2.Stream height is factory set at 45-50 PSI. If stream height (See Fig. 14) needs to be changed adjust theregulator in the freeze resistant package. Clockwise adjustment raises stream height, counter clockwise adjustment will lower stream.3.Adjust operating cable as required. Cable system should have a minimal amount of free play to allow forproper valve operation. If the system is too tight the valve will stay in the on position creating constant water flow. Too much free play will result in non-operation of the valve with the push-buttons.4.Note: Water from the drain back tube in the freeze resistant package, will continue to run while the valve isactuated.5.After cable system is adjusted properly stuff flexible insulation into any openings between the outside walland the interior box.6.Recheck all connections. This paper compares instrument panel head impact requirements of FMVSS 201 with its European counterparts, ECE 21, and EEC/74/60, Interior Fittings. It describes the similarities and differences between these regulations and explains the unique requirements for each market. It then compares processes for development and validation testing in both markets. It also covers related topics like self-certification, witness testing, radii, projections, and interior compartment doors. The cockpit design engineer will gain an understanding of the factors involved in ensuring that their design fully meets the requirements of the subject regulations.INTRODUCTIONInterior Fittings is a broad description that covers regulations from several countries. This paper will discuss the similarities and differences between FMVSS 201, EEC 74/60, and ECE 21. The latter two regulations are almost identical so effectively we will be comparing the Interior Fittings requirements of the US and Europe. One of the first and major differences between meeting the requirements of the two different markets is the necessity of obtaining a Whole-Vehicle-Type-Approval (WVTA) certificate when selling to the countries of the European Union. This certificate is obtained by undergoing "witness testing" by a third party authorized by the European governments to oversee testing required by the European regulations. Designing a vehicle to meet the requirements of a foreign market is often referred to as homologating a vehicle. Homologation is a generic term that means validating a product to the requirements of the market in which you intend to sell. So, a vehicle is homologated to the requirements of Japan, or Australia, or in this case the European Union. While witness testing and a WVTA certificate are required for Europe, verification for the US market is all self-certification, where the government relies on the automakers to take appropriate action to ensure that their products meet all the requirements of the applicable regulations. This paper will concentrate on the details of the European Interior Fittings regulations and the differences from the US regulation with an emphasis on their application to instrument panels and floor consoles. This paper will not cover other parts of the vehicle with the same thoroughness as instrument panels and consoles.INTERIOR FITTINGS COMPARISON – U.S. TO EUROPEFMVSS 201 – Occupant Protection in Interior Impact - includes pendulum head impact testing at 12 mph (if the vehicle has dual airbags) and interior compartment door requirements (See figure 1 in the appendix, for a picture of the impact testing device). European Interior Fittings is head impact testing at 15 mph as well as radii, projections, and surface area requirements on knobs, switches, levers and surfaces. First, the requirements and processes used to comply with FMVSS 201 will be described, and then the requirements and processes used to comply with European Interior Fittings will be described, and compared to the requirements of FMVSS 201.GENERATING IMPACT ZONES FOR FMVSSBefore conducting impact on physical parts the instrument panel head impact zones must be developed and the impact points selected. There are an infinite number of points one could choose to hit in the impact zone, so only the worst case points are chosen and evaluated.The zones are set up using an apparatus that could be described as a ball on a string (see Figures 2, 3, and 4). The string is anchored first at the Design Seating Reference Points (generally referred to as the SgRP) of all front seating positions with the length to the outside edge of the 165mm diameter sphere infinitely adjustable from 736 mm to 840 mm. It is sufficient to hold it at the shorter of the two lengths and swing the ball down until ittouches the instrument panel. Then the ball is swung from side to side keeping the string to the SgRP tight. The line scrubbed on the instrument panel is the lower boundary of the head impact zone. Line P L in figure 5 is the lower boundary of the passenger side head impact zone. Line D L in figure 5 is the lower boundary of the driver side head impact zone. The same is done from a point forward and up from the SgRP, called the adjusted SgRP, if the vehicle has adjustable seats. If the vehicle does not have adjustable seats, then the 736 mm and 840 mm arcs are only struck from the SgRP. The adjusted SgRP is 125 mm forward in vehicle and 19 mm up from the SgRP. It can also be the amount of actual rise resulting from the slope of the seat track over a 125 mm horizontal movement. From the adjusted SgRP the 840 mm length is used to get the top arcs of the head impact zones for all possible front seating positions. There is one possible exception that can occur. If the headform contacts the windshield when the ball-on-string is swung down from the adjusted SgRP, the string is shortened from its maximum length of 840 mm until the headform clears the windshield on its downswing. If this occurs, then this shorter length is used for the top edge of the head impact zone. Line P U and Line D U are the tops of the passenger and driver head impact zones as shown in figure 5. In the case of the vehicle shown in figure 5, there are only two designated front seating positions so there are only two sets of arcs comprising the driver and passenger head impact zones. In vehicles with a third designated seating position for the center seat occupant, there would be three sets of head impact zone arcs.Once the arcs described above have been constructed, several exemption zones bound them on their ends and below. These are the steering wheel exemption zone, the right hand exemption zone and the reference line, which defines the bottom of the zone. The steering wheel exemption zone is simply a vertical plane parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle, positioned half the headform diameter (82.5 mm, since the headform is 165 mm in diameter) inboard of the edge of the steering wheel (see vertical Line E L in Figure 5). This bounds the left edge of the impact zones. The right hand exemption zone is a plane parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle 125 mm inboard of the right hand instrument panel to a-pillar attachment (see vertical Line E R in Figure 5). The reference line bounds the lower edge of the impact zone (see Line R in Figure 5). The reference line is a line between the steering wheel and right hand exemption zones, defined by the points of contact of vertical tangents to the rearmost surface of the panel. Any point below the reference line is exempt from impact.For the US zones we typically do the impact zone setup on CAD using proprietary software developed in-houseand called GENPAD ®(SAE Paper # 2002-01-1241). If it is desired to lay the zones out on physical hardware anh-point fixture is required. This necessitates the build of a fixture to locate the SgRP and adjusted SgRP, and enable adjustable attachment of the apparatus to the vehicle, so that the zones can be constructed on the actual parts (see the horizontal bars, and eyebolts of the h-point fixture in the lower area of figure 5). The locations of the SgRP and Adjusted SgRP are verified by measurement. Once it is proven that the fixture is accurate the zones are constructed on the instrument panel.GENERATING IMPACT ZONES FOR EUROPEFor Europe an initial zone can be done on CAD but the witnessing agency will require that the zones be laid out on actual hardware, when parts become available. The arcs are exactly the same as for FMVSS as described above, but the exemption zones are different. EXEMPTION ZONES FOR EUROPEThe steering wheel exemption zone is not a vertical plane as for FMVSS, but is defined with the steering wheel in all possible positions of use. The steering wheel is increased in the plane of the wheel by a band 127 mm inboard from the wheel. The smallest common area bounded by bands generated with the steering wheel in all positions of use is the steering wheel exempt area. This area extends outboard to the pillar at the top and bottom. A horizontal plane tangent to the bottom of the steering wheel with the wheel in its up-most position is the lower boundary of the steering wheel exempt zone, unless this plane is below the reference line, in which case the reference line becomes the lower boundary. At the top, when the 127 mm arc about the wheel hits the twelve o'clock position the line is continued horizontally outboard to the pillar (see Line E around the steering wheel in figure 6).The right hand exempt zone in the case of a left hand drive vehicle is a vertical line 100 mm inboard from the side glazing, but is not shown in the figure. Normally this line doesn't provide much relief because it barely reaches the instrument panel so in practice it is ignored. The reference line is the line made up of points constructed from vertical tangents to the rearmost surface of the instrument panel, across the entire width of the instrument panel. All areas below the reference line are exempt from the impact requirements, although these areas are not exempt from the radii, projection and surface area requirements of Europe, which will be described later in this paper. PICKING THE IMPACT POINTSOnce the impact and exempt zones have been determined, the impact points can be selected. Since there are an infinite number of points that could be selected, it is necessary to narrow it down to the worst-case points to make the task manageable. This isaccomplished by a cross functional team consisting of a design and release engineer, the head impact test engineer and a knowledgeable head impact engineer. Together they decide, knowing the structure and historical hard points from other programs, what the worst case points will be and select them accordingly. See figure 7 for a typical layout of head impact points. For Europe, the witness authority picks the points.GENERATING IMPACT ANGLESOnce the points are selected an angle of impact needs to be generated for each impact point. Again, there are differences between the US and European methods. The US method is based off of SAE J921, and establishes a trajectory at the point of impact. The test lab adjusts the angle of the fixture, which holds the instrument panel during impact, or the angle of the test device to ensure that the head impact test device's trajectory at the point of impact matches the trajectory described in SAEJ921. In a cross-car section of the instrument panel containing the impact point, a vertical line whose origin and pivot is the adjusted seating reference point is rocked down until it is tangent to the instrument panel. The angle of impact is perpendicular to this line for any impact point in that section.The European method differs in that the first point of contact with the ball is the impact point. For Europe, two angles from vertical, and the length of the string from the adjusted seating reference point to the center of the ball, serve to locate the ball, and define the impact angle. One angle is from vertical back to the string, and the other is from vertical down to the point of contact with the panel, and they are both read from the protractor of the device shown in figure 8. From the two angles, the angle of the trajectory of the headform can be determined, and again the trajectory of the test device is matched to that of the ball and protractor. The witness, after selecting the impact points on actual hardware, uses the device in figure 8 to determine the impact angles.IMPACT TESTINGOnce the impact zones and angles are determined and parts have been procured, impact testing can commence. In the US, as mentioned previously, all certification is self-certification. The government expects automakers to meet the regulations without a representative present, and without documentation being sent to the government. Occasionally, the government will buy a vehicle or part and conduct a test according to its established and published procedures as an audit. If there is an issue with the test, the government will check the process that the automaker followed to ensure that the automaker exercised due-diligence in their efforts to meet the requirement. If it is determined that there is a non-compliance with a regulation, the government can order a recall. Meeting the European regulations is different. To get a WVTA certificate for a vehicle line requires witness testing and completion and submission of documentation by the authorized third party.The desired result of impact testing for both the US and Europe is decelerations that do not exceed 80 g's continuously for more than 3 m-sec (See figure 9 for a picture of a typical deceleration with a 3 m-sec length of time depicted on it). There are two accelerometers in the headform of the test device. Common practice has been to average the result of the two for Europe, at the request of the witness, and to use the highest result of the two accelerometers for US testing. The European witness looks carefully at the parts after impact, having painted the headform before impact, for signs of paint transfer on contacted edges. More details will be provided below about the radii required by the European regulations. A unique US requirement is that of interior compartment doors. During instrument panel head impact testing, interior compartment doors are required to stay closed, where the European regulation has no such requirement.INTERIOR COMPARTMENT DOORSFMVSS 201 includes interior compartment door requirements. Interior compartment doors have been defined as doors over compartments designed for the storage of personal effects. Interior compartment doors must stay closed during the impact sequence described above, and during inertial loading. The inertial loads are described as 10g vertical, 10g transverse and 30g longitudinal inertial loads, and SAE procedure J839b, section 5, is referenced in this section of the regulation. Section 5 of the procedure states: "Due to the complexity of physical testing it is judged to be more practical and more accurate to base evaluations on mathematical analysis." (SAE J839b, May 1965) Therefore the analysis of interior compartment doors is done by calculation, with the goal of ensuring that the doors stay closed during the described inertial events. As for Europe, interior compartment doors are not required to stay closed during instrument panel head impact testing, nor is there an inertial analysis required. RADII, PROJECTIONS, AND SURFACE AREASThe European Interior Fittings regulations are more extensive in that they have radii, projection, and surface area requirements, which apply to the whole interior of the vehicle and that are not found in FMVSS. Refer to figures 10 and 11 throughout this discussion. There are three main zones specified by the regulation. Section 5.1 defines the area of the vehicle above the reference line of the instrument panel, and in front of the front seat h-point. Section 5.2 defines the area of the vehicle below the reference line of the instrument panel, and in front of the front seat h-point. Section 5.3 includes all those objects that have not been covered by Sections 5.1 and5.2, and the area in front of the transverse plane passing through the torso reference line of the rear-most seat occupants, up to the instrument panel. In general, contactable edges on the instrument panel above the reference line (the white line extending across the instrument panel in figure 10) must have radii > 2.5 mm, and contactable edges below the reference line must have radii > 3.2 mm. In general, all knobs, switches and levers on the instrument panel regardless of whether they are above or below the reference line must meet the following radii, surface area, and projection requirements (See figure 12 for a picture of the projection measuring device. This device is a 165 mm diameter hemisphere with a 50 mm flat-ended movable ram. When the ram moves, the amount of its movement, i.e. the projection of the object, is recorded on the dial indicator):• For projections < 3.2 mm, the object must have radii > 0.5 mm and the height/width ratio of theobject must be < 0.5 (i.e. the width of theprojection must be at least twice the heightwhere the height is the amount of projection).• For projections > 3.2 mm but < 9.5 mm, radii must be at least 2.5 mm and the surface areamust be > 200 mm2. The surface area ismeasured at a section cut 2.5 mm from the pointprojecting furthest.• For projections > 9.5 mm, the object must either retract or break away to a projection < 9.5 mmwhen acted on by a longitudinal horizontal forceof 37.8 daN (approximately 85 lbs). If the objectretracts to less than 9.5 mm the standardrequirements for knobs apply, as describedabove. If the object breaks away, the remainingprojection must be < 9.5 mm and the crosssectional area of the original part must be 6.5cm2. The cross sectional area of the original partis measured at a cross section into the part 6.5mm from the point of maximum projection.The requirements described above only apply to surfaces, edges, knobs, switches and levers that are contactable. This is a key point and applies throughout the entire interior fittings regulation. Contact with surfaces and edges, on any part of the interior, is checked with the 165 mm diameter spherical headform. Contact above the reference line with knobs, switches and levers, is also checked with the headform. Contact below the reference line of the instrument panel with knobs, switches and levers, is checked using the kneeform, as shown in figure 13. The kneeform is used below the reference line and during its use no part of the kneeform should extend above the reference line. It is held parallel to the vehicle's longitudinal axis and can be rotated about a cross car axis up to 30 degrees up or down, so that either the top surface or bottom surface of the device is parallel to ground.It is important to note that the required radii are all minimum radii. It is good practice to design with larger radii to ensure that tolerances do not yield a lower bound than the minimum requirement.The requirements above only apply to "hard" parts. This is the case for the entire regulation. A hard part is described as consisting of materials that are harder than 50 Shore A. The hardness is measured with a hardness tester as shown in figure 14. Materials having a hardness less than 50 Shore A are removed before evaluation, and only the remaining object is evaluated.REQUIREMENTS FOR FLOOR CONSOLESThe requirements for floor consoles are simpler to understand, even though coverage of the floor console could extend across three sections of the regulation. Some parts of the console could be covered in Section 5.1 if they are above the reference line of the instrument panel. Other parts forward of the h-point and below the reference line are covered in Section 5.2. And, other parts not mentioned in 5.1, and 5.2, and rearward of the front seat h-point in Section 5.3. Contactable knobs, switches and levers forward of the front seat h-point must meet the same requirements for knobs, switches and levers as described above, and assuming the floor console is below the reference line of the instrument panel, edges and surfaces below the reference line of the instrument panel must have radii > 3.2 mm. Objects mounted rearward of the front seat h-point, but in front of the transverse plane of the torso reference line of the rear-most seat occupants, are required to project less than 25 mm and have radii > 3.2 mm. Hand-brake controls and shifters are not covered in this paper. Objects below the h-points of the front seats are exempt, but it should be noted, that unless these objects are at least blunted (radii > 0.5 mm), they could cause concern to the witness.REQUIREMENTS FOR STORAGE COMPARTMENTSStorage compartments that have lids aren't described neatly in the regulation. The criteria the witness will apply depend on the design of the lid and features inside the storage compartment. If a lid is so designed that it has a feature that will hold the lid in an open position, such as a floor console lid with a stop that holds it open in the ninety-degree position, the witness will require that all contactable edges and projections inside the storage compartment and on the underside of the lid, including the latch, meet the requirements described above. Also, if there are features inside a storage compartment, such as coin holders, cup holders, tissue holders, cell phone holders, or power points etc. that would encourage the use of the storage compartment while operating the vehicle, the witness will require that all contactableedges and projections in the storage compartment comply with the requirements above. The normal "position-of-use" of the door/lid is what determines whether the requirements apply to the interior of the storage compartment. If there is no reason a driver would use the storage compartment while driving, and there are no positive stops that keep the door open on its own, the witness may determine that the door's position-of-use is closed and the requirements would not apply.INTERIOR FITTINGS EVALUATION BY WITNESSWhile FMVSS 201 only requires impact testing and an inertial analysis, the European Interior Fittings regulation requires much more, as described, and all in the presence, and under the direction of an authorized witness authority. Typically, the static evaluation of the entire interior of the vehicle is done first, and the physical instrument panel impact testing is done last. There are other areas of the vehicle that may require impact, such as the sun visors, but this paper only focuses on the instrument panel and floor console. The static evaluation for radii, projections and surface areas, on surfaces, edges, knobs, switches, and levers is done on the entire interior of the vehicle. This evaluation can take the witness a whole day as they examine each detail of every object in the vehicle, assessing its compliance. The dynamic physical instrument panel head impact testing is done last, and has been described above. The witness will paint the headform before the impact test, and examine the parts closely after the test. They are looking for evidence of paint transfer on a contacted edge that might have occurred during the dynamic event. Contacted edges can result from fracture of a part or crush of one part in relation to another part. For instance, if impacting on a finish panel next to a radio (which is typically more solidly mounted) the finish panel can be pushed in during the test and remain so after the test. If there is paint on the edge of the radio, the witness will check this edge to ensure that it has the proper radii > 2.5 mm, assuming it is above the reference line of the instrument panel.Once the arduous witness evaluation is complete and the requested documentation supplied to the witness authority, assuming there have been no issues, the witness authority compiles their documentation and generates a report to the European governing body, recommending approval of the vehicle for a WVTA certificate. If there are no issues with the supplied data and documentation, they will grant a WVTA certificate thus allowing the automaker to start selling vehicles in that market. CONCLUSIONThere are major differences between the requirements of FMVSS 201 and the European Interior Fittings requirements; ECE 21, and 74/60 EEC (later revised by 78/632 EEC, and 2000/4/EC). The same machine can carry out the actual impact on the instrument panel, albeit at different speeds: 12 mph for US, and 15 mph for Europe. The impact zones are very similar aside from the left and right hand exempt areas. But, the European requirement has many important differences that make it a larger task to meet. There is witnessed testing required for the instrument panel impact, and there are radii, surface area and projection requirements that do not appear in the US law. The details of the radii, surface area and projection requirements apply to the entire occupant compartment of a vehicle, and the complexity of the regulation requires an intimate knowledge of all the details of the law, in order to mitigate the risk of non-compliance.
