一、阅读理解
National parks are an excellent way to explore all the beauty that the world has to offer: whether it’s endangered species, erupting volcanoes and snowy mountains, or rainforests and lakes. Of the thousands of national parks that exist in the world, these are the ones that should be on everyone’s bucket list.
Yorkshire Dales, United Kingdom
Contrary (相反) to the popular link of national parks with the wilderness, it is filled with winding valleys, hills and villages where over 24,000 people live and work. Visitors can walk through grassland, visit waterfalls or explore underground caves, but Yorkshire Dales is also home to several food shops, and the park hosts cheese festivals and farmers markets regularly, so it’s best to go hungry.
Kakadu National Park, Australia
It is a delight for those who like a bit of history mixed with the biodiversity of national parks. While it houses thousands of species of wildlife, there’s more to the national park than that.
Guilin and Lijiang River National Park, China
It is surrounded by striking natural beauty and can be explored by land. But the river national park, as the name suggests, is best explored through leisurely boat rides that take visitors through many ancient towns that come along the way of the river.
Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland
Here’s a surprising fact: The whole of Vatnajökull National Park makes up 14% of Iceland’s territory! The park is usually open for hikes around the glaciers; boat rides through glacier lakes, and tours that take visitors through the park’s many ice caves, waterfalls, and icebergs. Vatnajökull is also where two of Iceland’s most active volcanoes are located. 1.What is recommended for a trip to Yorkshire Dales?

Fourteen-year-old Harini Logan won the Scripps National Spelling Bee last Thursday, defeating 12-year-old Vikram Raju in a tie-breaker. It’s the first time the contest has ever been decided by a tie-breaking round of spelling.
A spelling bee is a contest where players take turns spelling words. Players who spell a word wrong are out of the contest. As the contest goes on, the words get more difficult. Normally, the contest ends when there’s only one player left who hasn’t made a mistake. Though the bee is mainly about spelling, since 2021 it has changed slightly to also focus on the meaning of the words. During parts of the contest, students were asked to choose the correct meaning of a word.
That caused trouble for Harini. She was asked about the meaning of the word “pullulation”. She said the word described the nesting of birds. The contest organizers had expected the answer the “swarming of bees”. Harini was removed from the contest. But soon she was back in—the judges double-checked and learned that Harini’s definition was also correct. One by one, the other students spelled a word wrong and got out. Finally, only Harini and Vikram were left.
The Scripps bee has been running for over 90 years. Many times it ended in a tie. As a result, the contest organizers changed the rules. They added a “spell-off” to the contest to make future ties much less likely. In the spell-off, Vikram and Harini each took turns trying to spell the words they were asked, but both made mistakes. At one point, Harini could have won by spelling the word “drimys” (a kind of plant) correctly. But she missed it.
That put the two into a super tie-breaking event, where they were each given 90 seconds to correctly spell as many words as they could. In 90 seconds, Vikram had spelled 15 words correctly. Harini had 21 correct spellings, making her the new winner.
4.What does the author want to show in Paragraph 2?
A.The rules of the contest.B.The awards of the contest.
C.The organization of the contest.D.The way to take part in the contest. 5.Why did the contest organizers change the rules?

A.A close spelling contest was held online.B.The Scripps Spelling Bee changed its rules.
C.Many people won spots at a national contest.D.A teenager wins Spelling Bee in exciting tie-breaker.
7.What is the text?
A.A news report.B.A book review.C.A research paper.D.A class
presentation.
One of the winners of this year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry was Danish scientist Morten Meldal. When describing his career, Meldal said he started out as an engineer but changed to chemistry because he “wanted to understand the world.”
Meldal’s experience may come as a surprise to students. They might believe they have to center their work and school lives in one field to be successful. But a study from professors at Michigan State University shows that is not always the case.
Michele Root-Bernstein and Robert Root-Bernstein (her husband) published their study in the Creativity Research Journal. They said that a large number of Nobel Prize winners can be described as “polymaths”.
The writers looked at past Nobel Prize winners and their students. They decided that when students of winners go on to win Nobel Prizes, some of what they learned from their teachers is how to live a life with many interests. They are, in a way, learning how to be creative.
Having many interests, the Root-Bernsteins wrote, permits scientists to look for creative
ways to solve problems. In fact, one important part of science is not discovering answers, but recognizing problems that need to be solved.
The prize winners, the Root-Bernsteins said, transfer “skills, techniques and materials from one field to another.” They said Alexis Carrel won his Nobel Prize in medicine in 1912 by using techniques he learned from the clothing business. He realized that people who used thread to make and fix clothing had a skill that could be used in operations to put new organs into people’s bodies.
The Michigan State University professors study creativity. They found Nobel winners are nine times more likely to have experience in working with wood, metal or in the arts than most scientists. The researchers say that unlike many people who spend long hours at work and give up some of their outside interests, Nobel winners believe their hobbies are important to creativity.
8.What comes as a surprise to students according to the passage?
A.Meldal’s winning Nobel Prize.B.Meldal’s original working field.
C.Meldal’s desire to understand the world.D.Meldal’s study with Michigan State University.
9.What kind of people can be sorted as “polymaths”?
A.People who are equipped with various interests.
B.People who only concentrated on just one field.
C.People who are committed lifelong to their career.
D.People who are admired for established achievements.
10.What’s the author’s attitude towards the Root-Bernsteins’ discovery?
A.Subjective.B.Doubtful.C.Objective.D.Opposed. 11.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.A Creative Scientist B.An Amazing Rise to Fame
C.A Born Nobel Prize Winner D.A Secret to Winning Top Prize
A research project called Mineral has created robots that move around in farm fields. The project aims to use computers to help farmers grow more food in ways that are healthy for the environment.
With the number of people on earth getting bigger each year, more food needs to be grown in order to feed everyone. As weather patterns continue to change because of the
climate crisis, this task is becoming even more difficult. Some experts say that to feed everyone, more food will need to be grown over the next 50 years than in the last 10,000 years. In the past, farmers tried to quickly increase the amount they produce, using methods that were not always healthy for the environment—more fields, fertilizers, and pesticides.
Instead, the focus of the Mineral project is on getting farms to produce more by improving conditions for each plant. Elliot Grant, who leads the project, says the goal is to “manage the plant instead of the plot.” Mineral’s team spent several years talking to farmers to see what problems they were having and how these problems might be fixed. That led to the creation of special robots, called “plant buggies (车)”.
At first, the buggies were very simple. They were built on bicycles and took pictures with cell phones. Over time, they’ve been improved repeatedly. The plant buggies roll on four wheels and are high enough to glide (滑行) over rows of plants without hurting them. They’re covered in solar panels and have strong wheels, which allows them to roll through muddy fields. The robots can take detailed pictures of plants, track each plant’s location, and measure the plant’s size.
Before, farmers had information about the soil and the weather, but they couldn’t track every plant. Now, with Mineral’s robots, they can. By collecting lots of information like this, Mineral believes computers can help farmers make predictions about how their plants will grow. Studying each individual plant could end up saving time and money.
12.What’s the Mineral project’s goal?
A.To replace farmers with robots.B.To design and sell farming robots.
C.To better handle environmental pollution.D.To improve food production in a green way.
13.What contributes to the need for more food?
A.The constant disasters.B.People’s bigger appetite.
C.The increasing population.D.The development of industry. 14.What does the underlined part “the plot” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.A secret plan.B.A piece of farmland.
C.The mark on a map.D.The series of events.
15.What is special about plant buggies?
A.They can collect soil information.B.They can make weather predictions.
C.They can monitor each plant’s condition.D.They can help fertilize and water the
crops.

Being fit and healthy doesn’t mean you have to work out for hours a day and eat nothing but chicken and vegetables for every meal. 16 The following are some of them.
You always complain you are too busy to go to the gym or to prepare a healthy meal.

Instead of always going to the movies or watching TV, you should take part in activities that keep you moving. You can go for a bike ride, go on a hike, or go to play sports with your family and friends, such as ping-pong and basketball. 19 Not only will you get moving, but also you will have fun.

Many years ago, I was at a girls, school and our teacher made all the girls in the class sit next to someone different every day.
On one of the days, my teacher paired Madhuri, who I had never talked to, and me to sit next to each other. I noticed that she seemed very anxious. I asked her what was wrong. She remained silent at first, but eventually, she told me that she had three sisters in her family and that her father couldn’t afford school books for all of them.
My primary school was strict, as was the standard then, and if you didn’t have your school books the teacher would make you leave the class. Madhuri was very anxious that day because she thought that the teacher would tell her to leave the class. When the teacher saw that she didn’t have the books, he told Madhuri that she couldn’t attend class for a week.
Madhuri was very sad. I felt so bad when I saw her pain that I decided to help her. I went to speak to her and offered to buy the books for her. She refused my offer to help. She had very strong principles and she would never accept things bought by others.
When I got home from school I told my mom the story. She said that it was good that I had tried to help but I should stop worrying about it because there was nothing more that I could do if she had refused my offer to help. I couldn’t stop worrying about it though. Then I had an idea. My elder brother, who had once used the same series of books, graduated from school last year. Why not turn to him for help?
