Students must submit their final, official high school transcript to the CFAO to be considered for the Virginia Guaranteed Assistance Program (VGAP). DC Residents should apply for DC TAG: /service/dctag-get-funding-college
1) Student obtains a PIN:
(A parent also needs a PIN if the student is dependent.)
2) Submit a 13-14 FAFSA:
(For: Fall 2013, Spring 2014, and Summer 2014) List NOVA’s School Code: 003727 and Reapply each year before May 1st.
Accept Student Loans if Necessary
After accepting a Stafford loan on MyNOVA, first-time Direct Stafford Loan borrowers will need to: 1) Complete Stafford Loan Entrance Counseling 2) Complete the Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note

Tuition (Currently $145.25 per credit for in-state at NOVA) Books Supplies Transportation Room and Board Other Fees Personal Expenses

NOVA students can apply for scholarships offered through NOVA’s Educational Foundation at /finance > Scholarships The application is submitted online. Students should apply for all the ones they qualify for!
Even if students do not demonstrate financial need,
They can still apply for scholarships, merit awards, other external resources and student loans!
How to Apply for Financial Aid
• • • • • • • • • Demonstrate Financial Need (except for certain loans and some scholarships) Be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen Have a valid Social Security Number Be registered with Selective Service if you are male and 18 to 25 years of age (go to for more information) Have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED). Be working toward a degree or certificate in an eligible program Not have a drug conviction for an offense that occurred while you were receiving federal student aid (such as grants, loans, or work-study) Not owe a refund on a federal grant or be in default on a federal student loan Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress while in college
The Purpose of Financial Aid

• Help cover the gap between what the family can pay and the cost of education.
Expected Family Contribution
= Financial Need
Need-based aid can be awarded up to the amount of financial need (i.e. grants, subsidized student loans, and work study).
