The stellar content of the Galaxy the white dwarf population
初中英语TheCenteroftheGalaxy
Our Milky Way Galaxy: A Traveler's Guide Our Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy containing 400 billion stars bound together by gravity. From Earth, the galaxy has the appearance of a faintly luminous band in the sky.The naked eye cannot resolve the individual stars making up the band, and it was not until the invention of the telescope in the 17th century that it was proved that the Milky Way galaxy contained multitudes of stars. In the early decades of the 20th century, astronomer Edwin Hubble photographed other galaxies and determined that they too are huge systems of many stars, and not just small structures within our own galaxy. The Milky Way is but one among multitudes of galaxies in space. The spiral structure of the Milky Way is obscured by the fact that our Earth, sun and nearby planets are embedded in the galaxy’s disc. Observation of the shapes of other galaxies led to the realization that ours might be a spiral type.Today, new techniques for measuring distance n deep space are helping astronomers put together a picture of the true shape of our Milky Way galaxy, although much debate remains about details such as the exact shape and location of the spiral arms and central bar.。

Searching for the answers to life, the universe, and everything? Well look no further…The Hitchhikers Guide to the GalaxyBy Douglas AdamsPublished by Serious Productions© 1976A Sci-fi thrillerPage Count: 216Your Guide to SurvivalBy ATPlanning on taking a quick stop by Ursa Minor? Just don’t forget the number one rule of thumb when traveling across the galaxy: Always bring a blanket. Tips like these are shared periodically throughout The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams. In it, the deepest questions of the universe will at last be answered. The protagonist, Arthur Dent, is the sole survivor of planet Earth since it was destroyed for the means of making an intergalactic highway. Dent finds himself aboard a spaceship with Ford Prefect, his quirky best friend. Together they make their way across the galaxy through a series of highly improbable coincidences: stumbling upon the president of the galaxy, surviving in the vacuum of space, and finding the legendary planet of Magrathea. The novel’s plot revolves around what happens to this unlikely crew as they are the first beings in five million years to reach Magrathea. This concept of life outside of Earth and traveling through great distances of space is what will likely keep the reader reading. In the beginning this world renowned book pulls readers in through Adams unique tone including multiple hilarious scenes that will leave one laughing out loud. The book is comprised of twenty-two chapters, each short in length making the book a quick and easy read. It also has many elements that many teenagers enjoy including humor while maintaining a thought-provoking plot line. The strong suit of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is definitely its extensive creativity. Within the book there is another book entitled The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, where one will find descriptions of creatures and places throughout the galaxy. Some of its excerpts being literally out of this world! Who could have thought of its description of the Babble Fish: “it feeds on brainwave energy received not from its carrier but from those around it. It absorbs all unconscious mental frequencies from this brainwave energy to nourish itself.” These overly complex ideas put a comic spin on the plot which is another strength. However straying from the plot to explain something can often make readers confused. This drift from the plot resulted in a very disorganized composite of certain scenes in the book. Adams may have chose to include this skipping around to lighten up the more serious parts of the book and remind the reader that it is a comic novel. In other words those looking for an uplifting and humorous book about life’s greatest mysteries will surely find The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy very entertaining. After reading this, one can not help but ponder the very insignificance that our whole planet really has.Douglas Adams’ other books exhibit his passion for science fiction, specifically the larger world that exists outside of Earth. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was adapted into a mini TV series, and a full length feature film, in 2005. Adams has a series of follow up books entitled The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life the Universe and Everything, So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish, and many others. These novels include many jokes originating from The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Adams’ career of wild success spun off of this one ground breaking novel, a truly remarkable feat.Unfortunately his career came to an abrupt end when he died at the age of forty-nine in2001. His legacy lives on through this, and many other captivating books that will leave one wondering whether or not we are indeed alone in the universe.Below is given annual work summary, do not need friends can download after editor deleted Welcome to visit againXXXX annual work summaryDear every leader, colleagues:Look back end of XXXX, XXXX years of work, have the joy of success in your work, have a collaboration with colleagues, working hard, also have disappointed when encountered difficulties and setbacks. 我们抬头看空中的星星英语
我们抬头看空中的星星英语Title: Gazing Upon the Celestial Expanse: The Wonder of StargazingIn the stillness of the night, when the world is cloaked in darkness, there emerges a tapestry of twinkling lights that have fascinated humanity for millennia—the stars. Our gaze, lifted upward, beholds a celestial expanse that stirs a profound mixture of wonder, curiosity, and humility within us. This act of stargazing, simple yet profound, transcends mere observation; it becomes a dialogue between our finite selves and the infinite cosmos. The practice of stargazing harks back to ancient civilizations where celestial bodies were not only markers of time and seasons but also held stories and deities. Today, armed with advanced technology and scientific knowledge, we continue this primal tradition, albeit with a deeper understanding of what lies beyond our terrestrial bounds. As we look up, we are not just appreciating pretty lights; we are peering into the heart of scientific inquiry, exploring the birth, life, and death of stars, and contemplating our place in the vast universe. The stars, those distant suns, vary in size, color, andbrightness, each telling a unique story of its own. Encompassed within their glow are myriad processes of nuclear fusion, creating elements that are the building blocks of life. When a star explodes in a supernova, it distributes these elements across the cosmos, potentially fertilizing new solar systems with the seeds of life. Thus, every atom in our body was once forged in the heart of a star, a humbling thought that underscores our cosmic connection.Beyond the scientific, stargazing serves as a meditative practice, a momentary escape from the hustle of daily life. It reminds us of the fragility and fleeting nature of our existence. In the face of such majesty, personal worries may seem trivial, fostering a sense of peace and perspective. The vastness of space dwarfs our problems, encouraging a mindset shift towards greater empathy and understanding of our interconnectedness.Yet, amidst this awe, we must acknowledge the environmental cost of our modern lifestyles that mar the clarity of our night skies. Light pollution, stemming from excessive and misdirected artificial lighting, diminishes our ability to observe these heavenly bodies. It is a poignant reminder of the balance required between technologicaladvancement and nature conservation. Preserving the night sky for future generations necessitates concerted efforts to reduce light pollution through policy changes, awareness campaigns, and responsible lighting practices. Moreover, stargazing has fueled human exploration and ambition. It inspired dreamers like Galileo and visionaries like Carl Sagan, pushing the boundaries of knowledge and igniting the imagination of millions. The quest to understand the cosmos has led to technological innovations, from telescopes to space probes, each step bringing us closer to unraveling the mysteries of the universe. In conclusion, when we raise our eyes to the night sky, we engage in an activity rich with history, science, philosophy, and hope. It is a testament to the enduring human spirit, a reflection on who we are, where we come from, and the possibilities that lie ahead. As we stand beneath the sprawling cosmos, let us cherish this primordial bond with the stars, nurture our curiosity, and strive to protect the night sky for generations to come, ensuring that the simple act of looking up remains a source of wonder and inspiration for all.。

参宿三英语介绍800字左右
参宿三英语介绍800字左右参宿三(Betelgeuse)是猎户座中的一颗红超巨星,也是夜空中最亮的星之一。
以下是关于参宿三的英语介绍,供您参考:Betelgeuse, the name given to the star Alpha Orionis, is a red supergiant and one of the brightest stars in the sky. Located in the constellation of Orion, it is a member of the Orion OB association, a group of extremely massive and hot stars that are only found in the most populous and active star-forming regions of the galaxy.Betelgeuse is a variable star, meaning its brightness changes over time. It is classified as a Mira variable, which means it undergoes regular and significant changes in brightness, ranging from a visual magnitude of approximately to a minimum of about over a period of approximately 590 days. These changes in brightness are caused by changes in the star's radius and temperature, which in turn are caused by convection and pulsation in its atmosphere.Betelgeuse is a very large star with a radius that is estimated to be between 600 and 1,000 times that of the Sun. It is also very massive, with a mass that is between 14 and 20 times that of the Sun. However, despite its large size and mass, Betelgeuse is destined to have a rather brief lifespan. Because it is burning its hydrogen fuel extremely rapidly, it is believed to be nearing the end of its life cycle and will eventually explode as a supernova. The name Betelgeuse is derived from the Arabic phrase "yad al-jauza', which means "hand of the giant'. In ancient times, it was thought to be part of the shoulder or belt of the constellation Orion. The name Betelgeuse is also sometimes spelled as "Betelgeux".Betelgeuse is a very important star in the history of astronomy. In 1920, Edwin Hubble used observations of Betelgeuse to demonstrate that the universe is expanding, a discovery that revolutionized our understanding of the cosmos. Hubble used the redshift of Betelgeuse's spectral lines to show that all galaxies are moving away from us, indicating that the universe is constantly expanding.Betelgeuse is also a valuable tool for astronomers in understanding the physics of stars. Because it is so large and bright, it can bestudied in detail using telescopes, allowing us to learn more about the properties and behavior of stars like Betelgeuse. In conclusion, Betelgeuse is a remarkable star that offers us insights into the vastness and complexity of the universe. Its unique properties and important role in astronomy make it a star that will continue to fascinate and inspire for generations to come.。

Abstract. On the basis of theoretical evolutionary expectations, we develop a Galactic model reproducing star counts and synthetic colormagnitude diagrams of field stars, which include the white dwarf (WD) population. In this way we are able to evaluate the expected occurrence of WDs in deep observations at the various photometric bands and Galactic coordinates, discussing the contribution of the WDs of the various Galactic components. The effects on the theoretical predictions of different WD evolutionary models, ages, initial mass functions and relations between progenitor mass and WD mass are discussed.

2. The white dwarf population
By relying on the above described model one can easily predict the expected abundance of WDs, since each star evolved beyond the AGB phase and less massive than the lower mass limit for supernovae (Mup) is assumed to be a WD. However, to predict the colour-magnitude (CM) location of these dwarfs one needs further theoretical ingredients, as given by: i) a WD mass - progenitor mass relation , ii) theoretical WD models to obtain luminosity and temperature of a WD as a function of mass and age and iii) suitable color transformations. As shown in more detail in Paper II, the prediction on the WD population barely changes if we substitute the theoretical cooling tracks by Chabrier et al. (2000) with the ones by Salaris et al. (2000), both transformed into the observational plane by means of Saumon & Jacobson (1999) model atmosphere. We checked also that the predicted WD magnitude distribution shows small differences changing the semi-empirical WD mass - progenitor mass relation by Weidemann (2000) with the exponential one by Wood (1992). In the following we will adopt theoretical cooling tracks by Salaris et al. (2000) and the semiempirical mass relation by Weidemann (2000). The predicted spheroid WD population obviously depends on the assumption on the halo age. Fig. 1 shows the predicted luminosity functions at four different ages: 6, 8, 10, 13.5 Gyr. As well known, for a given age the bulk of the WD distribution is close but not precisely at the faint end of the cooling isochrone. The larger is the age the fainter is the bulk of the WD population. This is a well understood feature: the increase of the time spent in the cooling sequence implies a progressive decrease of WD luminosity. Furthermore the distribution of WD populations significantly
1. The model
Our Galactic model is a three components (spheroid, disc, thick disc) code which closely follows the “classic” Galactic models by Bahcall & Soneira (1984, B&S) and Gilmore & Reid (1983, see also Paper I and references therein) concerning the spatial density distribution of stars. However, it relies on suitable assumptions on the evolutionary status and on the initial mass function (IMF) of the various Galactic populations to reproduce the luminosity functions used as an (observational) input in Paper I. We recall here the main characteristics of the model referring, for a detailed discussion, to Castellani et al. (2001, Paper II). Predicted results are obtained by randomly generating star masses according to the adopted IMF (Kroupa 2001) and by using stellar models to derive luminosities in the selected bands for each given value of the stellar mass and age. Spheroid stars are assumed to be almost coeval and thus they are reproduced by populating a suitable theoretical isochrone (age= 12 Gyr, Z= 0.0002, Y= 0.23), while for both the thick disc and the disc one has to take into account prolonged episodes of star formation. Thus for these two components star masses and ages are both randomly generated, the mass distribution reproducing the selected IMF, while a flat age distribution is adopted within the range assumed for each component. For the disc we chose a constant star formation rate (SFR) from 50 Myr to 9 Gyr to populate evolutionary tracks (Z=0.02 Y=0.27) until the asymptotic giant branch and the WD cooling sequences. For the thick disc, following Gilmore, Wyse, & Jones (1995) and Norris (1999), we assume a metallicity of ∼Z=0.006 and a SFR centered at ∼ 10 Gyr with a spread of few Gyr. Thanks
