Our “Mommyand Me” time began two years ago. Mynext -door neighbor and fellow mother, Christie, and I were out in our front yards, watching seven children of age 6 and under ride their bikes up and down. “I wish I could tak e one of my children out alone, ”said Christie. Then we worked out a plan: When Christie takes one of her children out, I 'll watch her other three. And when she watches two of mine, I 'll take someone out.The children were extremely quick to accept the i dea of “Mommy and M”e time. Christie 's daughter, McKenzie, went first. When she returned, the other children showered her with tons of questions. McKenzie was smiling broadly. Christie looked refreshed and happy. “She's like a different child when there 's no one elsearound, ”Christie shared with me quietly. With her mother all to herself, McKenziedidn 't have to make an effort to gain attention.Just as Christie had noticed changes in McKenzie, I also discovered something different in each of my children during our alone time. For example, I am always surprised when my daughter, who is seldom close to me, holds my hand frequently. My stuttering(口吃)son, Tom, doesn ' t stutter once during our activities since he doesn't have to struggle for a chance to speak. And the other son, Sam, who's always a follower when around other children shines as a leader during our times together. The “Mommy and M”e time allows us to be simply alone and away with eachchild —talking, sharing, and laughing, which has been the biggest gain. Every child deserves(应得到)to be an only child at least once in a while.【文章大意】本文是一篇记叙文。

Wildlife Protection

Volunteering Is FunOne afternoon I was sitting at home feeling so bored.Instead of feeling sorry for myself, I wanted to meet people and have new experiences so I decided to start volunteering.I searched on my computer and found a website where I could volunteer on a farm in France. My time working on a farm was a new experience for me.It was basically a free holiday as food and accommodation were provided. However,it was not your typical holiday as I had to look after fifteen horses and sleep at the top of a tower in a castle!I was an awful farmer but it did not matter because I made some great friends. However, you do not need to go abroad to volunteer.I have had plenty of adventures at home as volunteering can become a hobby. For example,I love singing so I had a good laugh waving my arms in an attempt to conduct my local choir.I did slowly improve and it felt great to conduct the choir in a concert. At university,I organised a concert for charity with my friends. It was really fun founding bands and raising money for a cause we believe in.It is true that you feel good volunteering but there are also other advantages.I once volunteered as a server at a charity sports event where the organizers gave me cupcakes to thank me for my services.I also volunteered in a charity shop so I found loads of nice cheap clothes to update my wardrobe(衣柜).While this is all fun,my favourite aspect of volunteering is creating and sharing stories. My terrible attempts at farming have given me hilarious stories to tell!Talking to volunteers from different countries and backgrounds has also helped me learn more about the world.I feel thankful to have had so much fun with many nice people thanks to volunteering.【解题导语】本文是一篇记叙文。

Unit 4 Wildlife protectionⅠ. AKBG84 is a oneofakind girl band in Japan consisting of 33 singing and dancing grannies, with an average age of 84.The oldest member,Haru Yamashiro,is 97 years old!The new band, based in the remote island of Kohama in Okinawa,is a huge hit in the country—so much so that the members are rather shocked by their success.Their first single—titled Come on and Dance,Kohama Island—has made it to the top of the charts, and they've just completed a sellout tour of Japan.“We felt like stars in Tokyo,”added 86yearold Hideko Kedamori.“Everyone in the audience had a big smile, which gave us the energy to sing our hearts out. We're blessed to have been born in Kohama. Our lyrics are about the island and nature—whales in the sea spouting or dolphins doing somersaults (空翻).”Regardless of the lyrics, these elderly women are incredibly charming when they perform.Their energy and enthusiasm are amazing, considering their age.In fact,no one under the age of 80 is allowed into the band.It turns out that the pop queens are blessed with incredible genes—Okinawan islanders have one of the highest life expectancies in the world.Their diet chiefly consists of vegetables and local purplefleshed sweet potatoes, with practically no added sugar.Menaka said she isn't particular about her diet.“I look after my health by cleaning my home, wiping the floors, steaming rice,”she said.“I stay in the shade when it's too hot.I don't want to get burnt.I have to take care of my skin—I'm still young at heart!”[语篇解读]本文主要讲述了日本一个由33位平均年龄为84岁的奶奶组成的乐队大获成功的故事。

Wildlife Protection

We know a lot about the advantages and disadvantages of reading a hard-copy book vs. reading electronically. The problem is, many of us refuse to listen.Don’t get me wrong: Digital reading has some real advantages. Ask pe ople what they like most about reading on digital screens, and you hear over and over again about convenience. More points for digital reading:ebooks tend to be cheaper. There’s also the environmental argument. Think of the trees!Yet the soundness of this case is arguable. The earth metals to build e-readers are not just rare but highly poisonous. And think about all that energy needed to run servers and cooling fans. And remember, trees are a renewable resource. Then, there’s the appeal of a hard copy. M any people prefer print when reading both for pleasure and for school or work. Drawing examples from my own research, some of the reasons are aesthetic(美学的). Others involve a sense of accomplishment, ease of annotation(“I can write on the pages”), and navigation(“easy to locate where I was”). Meanwhile, I hear abundant complaints about eye strain(眼疲劳) and headaches when using screens.Much of what students liked about reading print involved their minds. They say “it’s easier to focus”. Some also acknowledge d they took more time with printed text and read more carefully. But what makes the failure of electronic reading is concentration. More than 92% of those I surveyed said they concentrated best when reading a hard copy. When a digital device has an Interne t connection, it’s hard to resist the temptation(诱惑).So if digital interruptions don’t threaten your enjoyment or understanding of a text, then medium may not matter. Casual reading like David Baldacci? If you break to checksports scores, there will be l ittle harm done. But just don’t expect to understand Joyce’s novels this way.【解题导语】文章主要介绍了在网络高度发达的社会中,电子书愈来愈有替代纸质书的趋势,然而作者通过对比两者的优缺点表达了对纸质书的青睐。

A Japanese telecom company has released a robot that it says has emotions. But rather than running in fear from it, we’ve welcomed it into our homes: Pepper, the “emotional robot”, sold out within a minute of going on sale.Created by Aldebaran Robotics and Japanese mobile giant SoftBank, Pepper went on sale to the general public in Japan on June 20. It is “the first humanoid(类人的) robot designed to live with humans, ” Aldebaran says on its website. Pepper costs about $1, 600. And like all good mobile products, there’s a $120 per month data fee, as well as an $80 per month damage insurance fee. According to a news release, Pepper can pick up on human emotions and create its own using a “multi-layer neural(神经的) network. ” Pepper’s touch sensors and cameras are said to influence its mood, which is displayed on the tablet-sized screen on its chest.Pepper will sigh when unhappy, and can go around your house recording your family’s daily activity. Aldebaran says Pepper can feel “jo y, surprise, anger, doubt and sadness, ” but it doesn’t say how strongly it can feel these emotions. What happens when Pepper is having a bad day? Will it, like many humans, become uncooperative? Will it ask for some time alone? What happens if it figures out that its purpose in life is just to engage in small talks? Thankfully, Pepper is only about four feet tall, with roller balls instead of legs, so if it is angry with and even turns on its owner, you’ll be safe if you can make it upstairs.Aldebara n says in reality, there’re probably quite a few decades away from artificial intelligence that could generate real emotions. Aldebaran wasn’t immediately available for comment on when Pepper will be available outside of Japan, but additional sales are scheduled for July after the first 1, 000 units sell out. SoftBank currently uses the robots in its stores as greeters, and it plans to offer Pepper to other stores in the future.

We should appreciate it that we are living on the earth securely. We are treated with mercy. We can burst into laughter as we like. We know the importance to succeed. But animals have been affected by powerful mankind since humans came into being. According to the common sense, fierce dinosaurs have died out. It's not the ending. In fact, the number of many rare animals is decreasing. It's certain that human race should pay attention to the topic of wildlife protection. We all should protect animal from being hurt and harmed. Everyone has the duty to do so. Although some reserves and natural zones have been set up to help them live in peace, there are still some animals being caught to get their fur and meat. The government in different countries should employ more people so that they can inspect the incidents of hunting and killing of animals. Or we are in danger too. The disappearance won't be distant if we don't treat animals as our friends.1. die out 灭亡;逐渐消失2. in peace 和平地;和睦地;安详地3. in danger (of)在危险中;垂危4. burst into laughter 突然笑起来;大声笑了出来5. affect vt.

In a word, human beings should learn to live in peace with wildlife. If everyone makes a little contribution, it will make a big difference to wild animals. Let's take action right now.
As we know, animals are our friends. To protect them is to protect ourselves. So we should first raise people's awareness of protecting the environment and not buying products of endangered species because when the buying stops, the killing can, too. Second, we can collect money to help protect wildlife and build reserves. As for the government, it should pass laws to prevent endangered animals from being hunted.

Captain John Bunch loves to go fishing. In fact, Bunch loves fishing so much that he became a professional fishing guide decades ago and has remained one ever since. There is something, however, that Bunch loves even more. That is his country and the men and women who join the army to protect it. Ever since Bunch met a young soldier in 2005, who wanted to go on a fishing trip before he left the army, the Florida native has offered over 1 200 fishing trips to veterans(退伍军人), with all expenses paid. And Bunch’s efforts to give back to those who have served their nation go even much further. Inspired by that fishing trip 11 years ago, he founded Operation Open Arms, which has since helped nearly 3 400 US troops and given out more than $12 million in direct benefits with his charity. Operation Open Arms also provides free weddings, vacations, and more leisurely activities to veterans, and can rely on a network of over 300 businesses and individual partners to get former soldiers anything they might need upon returning home from army. The former marine’s heartwarming generosity is a result of his own experiences in the military and the pride he has for his country. "I do this because I love my country and I do this because America is the greatest country in the world," he told NBC’s Today Show. Bunch’s unwavering commitment goes so far that he once turned down an invitation from then-President George W. Bush, because he had already scheduled a fishing trip with one of his veterans. Even the military has recognized Bunch’s work of love, and earlier this year honored him and his organization with the Outstanding Civilian Service Award and the Army’s most prestigious civilian award.1.What caused John Bunch to offer free fishing trips to veterans?A.A young soldier’s desire to go on a fishing trip.B. Working as a professional fishing guide.C. Having served in the army.D. Growing up in Florida.2.What is Paragraph Two mainly about?A. The achievements Operation Open Arms has made.B. How Operation Open Arms was founded.C. Activities Captain John Bunch has joined.D. The missions of Operation Open Arms.3.Which can best describe John Bunch’s personality?A. Ambitious and talented.B. Responsible and patient.C. Honest and determined.D. Warm-hearted and generous.4.John Bunch didn’t accept George W. Bush’s invitation because___.A. he thought little of himB. he didn’t want to see himC. he had to take care of businessD. he wanted to stay with veterans【文章大意】钓鱼向导John Bunch不仅自己喜欢钓鱼,而且还为美国退伍军人安排很多次免费的钓鱼之旅,并为他们提供一些其他的福利。

Unit 4 Wildlife protecti

Unit 4 Wildlife protectionⅠ阅读理解A(2018·浙江名校协作体高三模拟)“Her grades are fine; I’m not worried about that, but she just doesn’t seem to love learning any more,” Alice’s mum said. She’s absolutely right. I’d noticed the same thing about her daughter over the previous two or three years when I’d been Alice’s middle school English, Latin, and writing teacher, and I have an answer, right there on the tip of my tongue, to what has gone wrong. Yet I’m torn between my responsibility to help Alice and the knowledge that what I have to say is a truth I’m not sure this mother is ready to hear. The truth for this parent and so many others is this: Her child has sacrificed her natural curiosity and love of learning at the altar(圣坛) of achievement, and it’s our fault. Alice’s parents, her teachers, society at large—we are all supposed to be blamed in this crime against learning. From her first day of school, we pointed her toward that altar and trained her to measure her progress by means of points, scores, and awards. We taught Alice that her potential is tied to her intellect(智力), and that her intellect is more important than her character. We taught her to come home proudly bearing grade As, championship prizes, and college acceptance, and not on purpose, we taught her that we don’t really care how she obtains them. We taught her to protect her academic and extracurricular perfection at all costs and that it’s better to quit when things get challenging rather than risk losing that perfect record. Above all else, we taught her to fear failure. That fear is what has destroyed her love of learning.【解题导语】本文通过Alice的例子说明了父母、老师和社会有时会扼杀孩子的好奇心和对学习的热爱。

Sarah

1.resting

固定结构spend some time(in) doing sth.

3.has been told/was told

5.to prove

want to do sth.

7.invitations

a degree in...

10.certainly
