She said,“I was searching for a deeper interaction with nature and people.”Walking would minimize her carbon footprint, plus the slow pace meant that she could fully immerse herself in nature, and gain insights into other cultures in a unique way.She left her hometown of Bend,Oregon,on2May2016and headed into an adventure. Along the way,Madeline would suffer from heatstroke(中暑)in the Australian desert and hear gunshots while camping in Turkey.“Still,”she said,“I didn’t stop because I was more afraid of not following my heart than I was of losing everything I owned and loved.”Apart from that, her slow pace allowed her to be drawn deeply into other cultures. She wandered the tiny seaside villages along Italy Tyrthenian Sea,enjoying the lively atmosphere. In Vietnam, she was invited and offered food by an elderly woman to rest in her wooden shack at the peak for the night. She chose an experience of uncertainty and curiosity,in search of something she could never be certain to find:a sense of fulfillment and a deeper connection.On16December2022,Madeline’s pilgrimage(朝圣之旅)ended right where it started. For now, she’s working on a book, planning future journeys and creating more effective ways for women to find and express courage in their lives.Whether a walk leads halfway around the world or just down the road,Madeline hasFor others whose accent does not seem to change,it could be because they feel safe in their identity, and their accent is much part of that identity—or that keeping the difference is valuable to them.Meanwhile, brain damage may result in foreign accent syndrome(FAS),which results from physical changes that are not under the speaker’s control.Suffering from FAS,speakers may lose the ability to speak at all or experience strange changes in the way they pronounce. In some cases, listeners might look down upon a person with FAS as they believe them to be foreigners. It’s no wonder many people unconsciously protect themselves by adapting their speech to those around them.8.What does the underlined word”This“in Paragraph2refer to?A.The desire to fit in.B.The change of career.C.The adjustment of accents.D.The influence on language. 9.What makes people choose to change their accents?A.The result of brain damage.B.Their strong sense of identity.C.Their desire to learn about locals.D.The need to adapt to new environment. 10.What can we know about the people suffering from FAS?A.They may be taken as foreigners.B.They can not help making a sound.C.They suffer from emotional changes.D.They may change accents to gain respect.11.What’s the author’s purpose in writing this text?A.To explain the loss of accents.B.To introduce the history of accents.C.To analyze why accents are lost or kept.D.To show the significance of accent changes,Some big scientific discoveries aren’t actually discovered but borrowed. That’s what happened when scientists discovered proteins from an unlikely lender:green algae(绿藻), whose cells are decorated with proteins that can sense light. The light-sensing protein promised the power to control neurons(神经元)by providing a way to turn them on and off.Such ability, first noticed in2002,quickly caught the attention of brain scientists:Nerve cells which were genetically engineered to produce such proteinsbecome light-controlled.A flash of light could cause a quiet neuron to send signals or force an active neuron to fall silent.“This is the light sensor that we needed,”says Zhuo-Hua Pan,a scientist searching for a way to control vision cells in mice’s eyes. The method is now called optogenetics(光遗传学).In Pan’s lab,light-responsive proteins restored vision in mice with damaged eyesight,a finding that has now led to a medical test on people.Optogenetics’promise wasn’t clear in early days,as scientists were first learning how to use these proteins in neurons.“At that time, no one expected that this optogenetic work would have such a huge impact,”Pan says. The algae’s light sensors have been adopted for use in countless brain research fields. Talia, another scientist, uses optogenetics to study connections between cells in the mouse brain. The method allows her to comb the relationships between cells that produce and respond to dopamine(多巴胺),which might help uncover details about motivation and learning. So far, optogenetics research has taken place mostly in mice. But findings into more complex brains like human brain may soon be confirmed.“We are definitely on the tip of uncovering some fascinating principles of the human brain, such as how the brain transforms signals from the eyes into perceptions,”says Yasmine of Columbia University. No matter what happens next in this swiftly moving field, one thing is certain:Brain scientists will be forever in the algae’s debt.12.What does Paragraph2mainly talk about?A.The origin of neurons.B.The discovery of green algae.C.The varieties of neurons.D.The inspiration from green algae. 13.What can we learn from Pan’s research?A.Damaged eyesight is likely to be restored.B.The findings are used to cure brain diseases.C.Relationships between cells have been found.D.The light-sensing protein is the key to the brain.14.What’s Yasmine’s attitude towards the future of her research?A.Cautious.B.Confident.C.Critical.D.Unclear. 15.Which section is this text most probably taken from?A.Health.B.Botany.C.Figure.D.Invention.二、七选五三、完形填空34.A.Defeated B.Guided C.Inspired D.Impressed 35.A.took over B.handed down C.set up D.gave away 36.A.teach B.remind C.promise D.warn 37.A.treatment B.trust C.communication D.care 38.A.confused B.concerned C.relaxed D.excited 39.A.conclusion B.shift C.difference D.mistake 40.A.acceptance B.company C.competition D.cooperation四、用单词的适当形式完成短文五、短文改错51.假定英语课上老师要求同桌之间交换修改作文,请你修改你同桌写的以下作文。

How can a doctor attack cancer with medicines that don’t damage the patient? How can an artist touch a person with a hidden message in an oil painting? This is Ruhani’s world — where the pursuit of learning leads to more learning for a self-described Renaissance teenager, who is multi-talented and has interests.Since age 11, she has been working summers in a lab at the University of North Texas Health Science Center researching cancer cells. She is testing drugs that can kill cancer cells while limiting the side effects on healthy cells. It’s a special mission guided by the heart because she lost a great aunt to leukemia (白血病) when she was in the sixth grade.“What really damaged her eventually was the treatment and the side effects of it, which kills both cancer and normal cells.” Ruhani explained. Due to this, Ruhani started her cancer research. “I wanted to find a better way to target cancer cells.”During the summer between sixth and seventh grade, Ruhani began research in the study of cancer with the help of her mother, Parmeet Jodhka, a microbiology professor, who taught her daughter the necessary biology. Working from about 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the lab, she has finally presented her findings at multiple science fairs. Her list of accomplishments is five pages long and includes placing third in Brazil’s science fair, MOSTRATEC, for her breast cancer research.“I like learning,” she said, “There is a difference between learning and studying. Studying, you are too stuck in finishing it and in turning it in. Learning, you are doing more for yourself.”4.What is Ruhani’s research aimed at?A.Testing how the cancer cells work.B.Saving her great aunt from leukemia.C.Relieving the pain of cancerous persons.D.Protecting healthy cells in cancer treatment.5.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?A.Rouhani’s summer vacation.B.Participants at the science fairs.C.Lessons taught by Parmeet Jodhka.D.The tireless efforts on the research. 6.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?.A.Learning is the eye of the mind for all.B.Learning is more difficult than studying.C.Learning is too much of a burden to bear.D.Learning is a means of self-improvement.7.Which is the most suitable title for the text?A.A Girl’s Lasting Pursuit of Learning B.New Birth of a Young ProfessorC.Success of a Well-rounded Teenager D.Stimulation of Students’ CuriosityHave you ever seen your cat or dog eating grass? They do so because it can help their digestion, and many wild species use natural substances to prevent and control diseases. This is called “zoo pharmacognosy” or, more commonly, animal self-medication.Scientists have discovered that tamarin monkeys use a specific tree resin (树脂) as medicine. In the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, scientists followed several groups of them to collect data. During one of these daily studies, tamarin monkeys were observed rubbing their bodies on the trunk of a tree. At first, researchers thought that they were marking their territory, a common behaviour in this species. Botanical experts later confirmed that the tree was a species of cabreuva, which is well known for its medical properties.Researchers decided to place camera-traps in different sites at the foot of the tree to record future visits by tamarin monkeys. The records surprisingly showed that many animals living in the forest visited it. Totally, ten species were observed. For many of them, it was the first time that behaviors similar to self-medication had been observed. More surprisingly, one species spread resin on each other’s fur in pairs. In general, the species seemed to specifically visit the tree to acquire the resin and seemingly benefit from it, either healing their wounds or fighting back parasites (寄生虫).While further studies are needed to identify the properties of the resin and thus confirm that this is indeed self-medication, the use of it suggests that cabreuva represents a common and universal drugstore for the residents of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. It is likely to be avaluable resource helping the species maintain their magnitude by improving their health. This discovery could have an important protection influence, as the disappearance of some trees could potentially affect the survival of some animals.8.Why do tamarin monkeys rub themselves against the tree?A.They are trying to cure diseases.B.They would like to digest what they eat.C.They feel like occupying the land.D.They are attracting companions’attention.9.What do researchers find through camera-traps?A.Many animals copy monkeys’ behaviors.B.Animals can help each other clean the fur.C.The cabreduva is the habitat of tamarin monkeys.D.Resin can be used as medicine for some animals10.What does the underlined word “magnitude” in paragraph 4 probably mean?A.Populations.B.Characteristics.C.Similarities.D.Flexibilities. 11.What is the possible significance of the discovery?A.Promoting evolution of creatures.B.Increasing the production of resin.C.Contributing to forest conservation.D.Motivating the study of monkeys’ diet.Adding game-like elements to non-game activities is part of app design. Streaks (计数器) encourage users to log into products each day. Medals reward them for completing tasks. Leaderboards add the spice of competition.Such features can help others stay motivated while achieving a goal they find difficult to stick to. When Duolingo, a language-learning app, went public in 2021, it was clear that game-like features play a crucial role in keeping its users engaged. But as You’ve Been Played, a new book by a game designer Adrian Hon notes, firms should be very careful about how they gamify experiences. If getting gamification wrong, you can annoy both customers and employees. For customers, the obvious dangers — annoying people with constant notices about streaks, or discouraging them by showing how low down a leaderboard they sit — are not the only ones. Somtimes, some activities surely need added “fun”. For instance, apps designed to encourage people to save money can happily use gamified features like money jars to track progress. However, some activities really don’t need added “fun”. One reading app offers tounlock animations (动画) if users hit certain reading landmarks; if you present reading as time-consuming, you are telling readers they are suffering. For employees, turning repetitive work into video games is a technique that Amazon has reportedly used to represent workers’ progress. Yet these ideas may cause negative impact. Forced rankings motivate some people while stressing others out. GitHub, an open-source coding platform, withdrew its streak feature after concerns were raised that it was pushing programmers to work every weekend. As Mr. Hon observes, games are much less enjoyable if you have no choice over whether to participate or not. Adding fun can work, but only if it is taken seriously. 12.What is the author’s purpose by mentioning Duolingo in Paragraph 2?A.To put an advertisement for the app.B.To illustrate how gamification helps.C.To compare different game-like elements.D.To invite more customers to learn languages.13.What are the customers upset with?A.The pressure of overwork.B.The brief delay of progress.C.The awful waste of money.D.Endless bothering ringtones. 14.Why does Github cancel its streak feature?A.It runs out of employees’ patience.B.It adds stress and unnecessary work.C.It gets employees addicted to fun games.D.It causes conflicts between programmers.15.What is Adrian Hon’s attitude towards gamification?A.Doubtful.B.Critical.C.Objective.D.Supportive.approaches include prioritizing your to-do lists, organizing your school supplies and tracking closing dates. You can be well on your way to becoming an organized student.●Have a morning routine. A great way to stay organized is to have the same routine every morning. It is harder to forget things at home or come to school unprepared if you follow the same routine each day. Anne Lacaton and Jean-Phippe Vassal, this year’s Pritzker Prize winners, were as surprised as anyone else when the most famous award in architecture was made public yesterday.“Of course it’s very pleasant, and we are very pleased,”Lacaton said at a conference with her partner, both smiling broadly from their black eyeglasses.Putting aside their eyeglasses, Lacaton and Vassal could not be more different from an earlier generation of Pritzker winners, known for their easily recognizable styles and grand work. Instead, the two apply their simple guideline to their work on old urban buildings for low-income families: Never destroy, never remove or replace, always add, transform, and reuse! When Lacaton and Vassal were asked to redesign a particularly large and over-crowded public housing block in Bordeaux in 2017, the residents (居民) told them they could not afford to move, even temporarily, but they wanted bigger units. Their solution was to replace the folding wooden front door with sliding glass door to each unit and painted the ugly walls with something bright. Suddenly, everyone had roomy outdoor space, some of which could be used during the winter as “winter gardens.”“So, people can not only get sun and light and spend time with family, but it’s also open to neighbors,” Columbia University architecture professor Mabel Wilson.“I would love to live in oneof the apartments t they’ve redesigned.”Their approach of cheap and creative re-adaption could be a model for urban planning in the US, Wilson adds, where destruction has been seen as a solution to old public housing in such cities as Chicago and St. Louis.Ther e’s a lot of violence in architecture and urbanism. We try to be precise. We try to work with kindness,” Lacaton once explained.“Buildings are beautiful when people feel well in them, when the light inside is beautiful and the air is pleasant, when the exchange with the outside seems easy and gentle, and when uses and sensations are unexpected,”Lacaton and Vassal started their firm in Paris in 1987. Together, they worked primarily in France. 1. Why are Lacaton’s and Vassal’s eyeglasses mentioned in paragra ph 3?A.To draw readers attention to their unusual color.B.To show that Pritzker Prize winners need eyeglasses.C.To tell us how surprised and happy they are for the prizeD.To stress their only possible similarity with other Pritzker winners.2. What have Lacaton and Vassal most probably done to win the Pritzker Prize?A.They have built many public houses with unique styles.B.They have designed various famous buildings in the world.C.They have provided free services for poor families in the US.D.They have tried to transform old urban buildings with kindness.4. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?A.Architecture. B.Environment. C.Lifestyle. D.Politics.3. On October 12,2021,China officially announced its first five national parks, which are homes to endangered species ranging from the Siberian tigers on the Russian border to the world’s last 30 Hainan black crested gibbons(黑冠长臂猿)in southern China’s tropical rainforest.By uniting hundreds of protected areas managed by various provinces, the new national park system’s goal is to strengthen conservation under the central authority of the new National Forestry and Grassland Administration(NFGA)These five parks cover an area two-third the size of the US national park system. The largest, Sanjiangyuan National Park in Qinghai Province, is almost the size of Mississippi. With such an ambitious plan, there are bound to be challenges. For one the government has to balance the need for the livelihoods of the locals with wildlife conservation. It has not announced a plan to create a permitting system that would regulate how people enjoy nature. What’smore,ecotourism-which is defined as tourism that benefits both locals and their environment-only exists in a fifth of China’s nature reserves. But there’s hope that the existing ecotourism projects in such nature reserves as Sanjiangyuan National Park and Wolong Nature Reserve will inspire efforts elsewhere in the new park system. Since 2018, Sanjiangyuan National Park has run a community-led tourism program that benefits both locals and snow leopards(豹), the park’s main tourist draw. For $43 a day, visitors can stay with local families, who act as guides to spot these rare “cats” in the wild.“The community has made all the major decisions, and 100 percent of the income stays in the community. It’s been incredibly successful,” says Marc Brody, who has worked in China since 1994.NFGA agrees that well-designed ecotourism can improve local ecosystems. It says that a core mission(核心使命)of China’s national parks is to promote eco-civilizationa mission that can be advanced by involving visitors Written into China’s constitution(宪法)in 2012, eco-civilization means scientifically balancing the economic development and the environmental protection.1. Which park is home to the thirty endangered gibbons?A.Hainan National Park. B.Wolong Nature Reserve.C.Northeast National Park. D.Sanjiangyuan National Park.2. What can be learned about Sanjiangyuan National Park?A.It is bigger than Mississippi. B.It sits on the Russian border.C.It is a pioneer in ecotourism. D.It has a mature permitting system.3. Climate science has been rapidly advancing in recent years, but the foundations were laid hundreds of years ago.In the 1820s, French scientist Joseph Fourier theorized that Earth must have some way of keeping heat and that the atmosphere may play some role. In 1850, American scientist Eunice Newton Foote put thermometers(温度计)in glass bottles and experimented with placing them in sunlight. Inside the bottles, Foote compared dry air, wet air, N2, O2 and CO, and found that the bottle containing humid air warmed up more and stayed hotter longer than the bottle containing dry air,and that it was followed by the bottle containing CO2. In 1859, Irish scientist John Tyndall began measuring how much heat different gases in the atmosphere absorb. And in 1896, Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius concluded that more CO2 in the atmosphere would cause the planet to heat up: These findings planted some of the earliest seeds of climate science. The first critical breakthrough happened in 1967 when Syukuro Manabe and Richard Wetherald connected energy absorbed by the atmosphere to the air movement vertically over Earth. They built a model which first included all the main physical processes related to climate changes. The predictions and the explanations based on their model still hold true in the real world almost half a century later. The model was improved in the 1980s by Klaus Hasselmann who connected short-term weather patterns with long-term climate changes. Hasselmann found that even random weather data could yield insight into broader patterns.“ The greatest uncertainty in the model remains what human beings will do. Figuring it out is 1,000 times harder than understanding the physics behind climate changes,” Manabe said.“ There are many things we can do to prevent climate change. The whole question is whether people will realize that something which will happen in20 or 30 years is something you have to respond to now.”So, it’s up to us to solve the problem that these pioneers helped the world understand.1. Does a marketing campaign capture the 28 of your company, say, or would this person work well with other people in a team? In 29 customer-service situations, intuition is often a better guide to how to behave than a script.Gut instincts can also be 30 . Plenty of research has shown that intuition becomes more unfailing with experience. In one well-known experiment, conducted in 2012, volunteers were asked to 31 whether a selection of designer handbags were fake or real. Some were instructed to operate on instinct and others to deliberate over their decision. Intuition worked better for those who owned at least three designer handbags; indeed, it32 analysis. The more expert you become, the better your instincts tend to be.33 , the real reason to embrace fast thinking is that it is, well, fast. Instinctive decision-making is often the only way to get through the day. Researchers at Cornell University once estimated that people make over 200 decisions a day about food alone. She finally had lost her long battle with cancer. The hurt was so intense; I found it hard to breathe at times. Always supportive, Mother clapped loudest at my school plays, held the box of tissues while listening to my first heartbreak, comforted me at my father’s death, and prayed for me my entire life. When mother’s illness was diagnosed, my sister had a new baby and my brother had recently married his childhood sweetheart, so it fell on me, the 27-year-old middle child, to take care of her. I counted it an honor. My place had been with our mother, preparing her meals, taking her to the doctor, reading the Bible together. Now she was in heaven. My work was finished, but I was alone.Deep in sorrow, suddenly, I heard a door open and slam shut at the back of the church. Quick footsteps hurried along the carpeted floor. A young man looked around briefly and then sat next to me. He folded his hands and placed them on his lap. His eyes started to be filled with tears.“I’m late,” he explained, though no explanation was necessary. After several eulogies(悼词), he leaned over and commented, “Why do they keep calling Mary by the name of Margaret?”“Because that was her name, Margaret. Never Mary.” I whispered, wondering who the stranger was anyway.“Isn’t this the Lutheran church?”“No, the Lutheran church is across the street.”“Oh ...”“I believe you’re at the wrong funeral, Sir.”The solemnness(庄重)of the occasion mixed with the realization of the man’s mistake bubbled up inside me and came out as laughter. Sharp looks from other mourner(哀悼者)only made the situation seem more stupid. I peeked at the confused, misguided man seated beside me. He was laughing too, as he glanced around, deciding it was too late for an uneventful exit.I imagined Mother laughing. At the final “Amen,” we rushed out a door and into the parking lot. “I do believe we’ll be the talk of the town. By the way, my name is Rick,” he smiled. That afternoon began a lifelong journey for me with this man who attended the wrong funeral, but was in the right place. A year after our meeting, we were married at a country church. This time we both arrived at the same church, right on time.In my time of sorrow, God gave me laughter. In place of loneliness, God gave me love. This past June, we celebrated our twenty-second wedding anniversary. Whenever anyone asks us how we met, Rick tells them, “Her mother and my Aunt introduced us, and it’s truly a match made in heaven.”36.Only the author could take care of her mom mainly because __________.A.her mom loved her much more than other childrenB.she was the eldest daughter in the familyC.a lovely baby came into her brother’s familyD.she was the only child without a new family’s burden37.Which of the following sentences is True?A.Rick was late for the funeral because he didn’t know the name of deceased.B.The author felt reluctant to undertake the work of tending her mother.C.Rick remained at the funeral even though he knew he had made a mistake.D.The author and Rick resembled in personality because neither could control emotions. 38.What can we infer from the passage?A.Margaret should be the name of Rick’s aunt.B.The author was supposed to be at the Lutheran church.C.The author and Rick met 22 years ago for the first time.D.The mourners at the funeral considered the author’s joy improper.39.What could be the best title for the passage?A.Two Funerals at a Time B.Hope Remains at the FuneralC.A heavenly Encounter D.Manners Matter at the FuneralWISH LISTThe latest driving techHudly Wireless Price: $349Staying focused on the road while glancing at your smartphone or satellite navigation for direction can be a distraction. The Research Excellence Framework (the REF) has led to a research culture which is holding back attempts to stabilize psychology in particular, and science in general. The REF encourages universities to push for groundbreaking, innovative and exciting research in the form of 4* papers, but it does not reward the efforts of those who replicate(复制)studies. The point of replicating a study is to test whether a statistically significant result will appear again if the experiments is repeated. Of course, a similar result may not appear -casting into questions the validity of the results from the first experiment.Last year, the Open Science Collaboration attempted to replicate 100 studies from highly ranked psychological journalists. While 97% of the original studies had a statistically significant result, just 36% of the replications had the same outcome. Equally worrying: when an effect did appear, it was often much smaller than previously thought.Recent data calls into question some widely influential findings in psychological science. These problems are not limited to psychology, however -many findings published in scientific literature may actually be false.Science is supposed to be self-correcting and re-producibility is a cornerstone of the scientific method. Yet, we simply aren’t invested in replicating findings. We all want to be good researchers and understand more about how the world works. So why are we so reluctant to check our conclusions are valid?Because no incentive(激励)is provided by the system we carry out our research in. In the UK, the REF rates the submitted research outputs in terms of their originality (how innovative is the research?), significance (does it have practical or commercial importance?), and rigour (is the research technically right?). Outputs are then awarded one to four stars. 4* papers are considered world-leading. The cumulative(累积的)total of 3* and 4* papers determines research funding allocation(分配)and has a knock-on effect on institutional position on the national ranking list and therefore attractiveness to students. Obviously, the more publications the better. The focus on originality -publications exploring new areas of research using new models, and avoiding testing well-established theories - is the exact opposite of what science needs to be doing to solve doing to solve the troubling replication crisis. According to REFstandards, replicating an already published piece of work is simply uninteresting.Worryingly, many academics admit to engaging in at least one questionable research practice in order to achieve publication. Examples of this include: coming up with a theory after data is collected, stopping collecting data when an effect appears in case it disappears later, or only reporting the significant effects from collected data. Others simply fabricate data -Dutch psychologist Diederik Stapel shockingly falsified data from more than 50 studies. The REF completely harms our efforts to produce a reliable body of knowledge. Why?With the next REF submission just four years away, many researchers are effectively faced with a choice: be a good scientist, or be a successful academic who gets funding and a promotion.43.What crisis the study of psychology facing?A.The REF has started a revolution in not only psychology but also science.B.The REF presses the universities to conduct more groundbreaking research.C.The REF tends to set up a different standard for replications of studies.D.The REF’s indifference to replications of studies had led to disturbing effects. 44.The REF’s emphasis on originality has brought about _________.A.a reliable body of knowledge B.publications exploring new areasC.tests of well-established theories D.uninteresting replications of studies 45.The underlined word “fabricate” in paragraph 8 closest in meaning to __________.A.copy B.inventC.transmit D.pretend46.We can infer from the passage that the REF __________.A.is a system for assessing the quality of research in UK universitiesB.provides UK researchers with funding and job opportunitiesC.recognizes researchers’ work and adds to their attractiveness to studentsD.is planning to change its standard before the next REF submission五、六选四HomesicknessThe longing for the family has caused pain to writers and poets since the beginning of time. Most of us associate very strongly with the place of our birth or the place we havelearned to call home. 47When you left home to attend school, you may or may not have experienced homesickness to some degree. 48 Other students are very excited in the beginning only to find, after several weeks, that they are starting to miss what was familiar and wish for a visit with friends and family. Still others dread the unfamiliar surroundings from the beginning and are sad and somewhat miserable for a period of time ranging from a few days to an entire semester.Homesickness can strike any of us when we have moved to new surroundings and are being called upon to meet our needs in a different way and with different people. Each of us has a different tolerance for change and learned different methods for coping with unfamiliar surroundings. 49 Sometimes it can become a more serious depression if the person cannot begin to meet his/her needs for love and belonging with new people. In those incidences, a new student (or an experienced student felling homesick) may want to seek out professional help to talk through his/her concerns.50 Often times, new people can show us the way to create new meanings for ourselves and can encourage us to stick with the problem and more through our feelings to new understandings. Often, homesickness is another way of saying we are scared to face the future, or that we’re doubling our ability to cope. Talking with new friends, getting involved in some new activities (until they too become familiar) or speaking with an interested counselor or teacher, can go a long way towards alleviating the worst feelings.A.The problem can be doubled for an international student struggling to fit in.B.It can hurt very much not to be able to go there physically in order to feel secure.C.Paradoxically(看似矛盾)homesickness can often “hit” after Christmas, when you come back after the break and the newness of university life has worn off.D.Homesickness can be a general term that represents grieving, feeling sad, feeling loss of meaning, fearing change, anticipating disappointment, or being lonely.E.There is no easy cure for homesickness but it certainly feels better to talk with someone else when you’re experiencing great sadness.F.Some students get very caught up in the excitement of new friends and activities and seem to forget about their former life entirely.六、概要写作51.Directions: Read the following three passages. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. The Achievement Gap in the United StatesThe achievement gap in the United States refers to the observed, persistent disparity(差异)in measures of educational performance among subgroups of U. S. students, especially groups defined by socio-economic status, race and gender. The achievement gap can be observed on a variety of measures including standardized test scores, grade point average, dropout rates, and college enrollment and completion rates.Research into the causes of the disparity in academic achievement between students has been ongoing since 1966. Many experts argue that achievement gaps are the result of more subtle environmental factors and “opportunity gaps” in the resources available to poor versus wealthy children.Home environments have a stronger impact on school achievement than in-school factors, in part, because children spend more time outside of school than in school. Studies have found that children in poverty whose parents provide engaging learning environments at home do not start school with the same academic readiness gaps seen among poor children generally. In addition, the out-of-school factors influencing academic performance differ significantly between children living in poverty and children from middle-income households. Being raised in a low-income family, for example, often means having fewer educational resources at home, in addition to poor health care and nutrition. The achievement gap has become a focal point of education reform efforts by a number of non-profit organizations and advocacy groups. Attempts to minimize the achievement gap by improving equality of access to educational opportunities have been numerous, such as multicultural education, finance equalization, and interventions to improve school testing, teacher quality and responsibility.___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___七、汉译英(整句)52.中秋节晚餐时,父亲提议为家人的健康干杯。
