Do you remember your dreams? Do people have the same dreams? Why do we dream? There are many questions about dreams. We dream during the REM (rapid (快的) eye movement) stage (阶段) of sleep. We have about five periods of REM sleep during the night. The first REM cycle (周期) lasts about 10 minutes. As the night goes on, the REM cycle gets longer. By early morning, the REM cycle can last up to 90 minutes. Usually, it is in this last REM cycle that we remember our dreams.

Dreams change as people age. People may have several dreams each night. Some are like films and usually in color. They come to us over and over again. That may be because the dreamer is worrying about something and trying to find

I was 15 months old, a happy and carefree kid, until the day I fell. It was a bad fall. I landed on a piece of glass that cut my eye badly. From then on, my injured, sightless, cloudy gray eye lived on with me.

Sometimes people asked me embarrassing (使人难堪的) questions. Whenever kids played games, I was the "monster". I was always imagining that everyone looked down on(瞧不起) me. Yet mum would say to me, "Hold your head up high and face the world." I began to depend on that saying. As a child, I thought mum meant, "Be careful,or you will fall down or bump into something because you are not looking. "As a teenager, I usually looked down to hide my shame. But I found that when I held my head up high, people liked me.

Passage1

We spent this holiday with our uncle. He loved to go on walks to collect stones. One day,he bought us backpacks, asked us to go to the mountain with him and carry the stones.

The whole day we walked around.Every now and then he put stones in our bags.To our surprise,he also took some stones out from our bags. But we thought he had just found better stones.

When we returned to the house,we were very tired. The backpacks were so heavy that we felt relaxed when we put them down.Yet our uncle’s backpack was half empty.

“Why did you put so many stones into our backpacks?”we asked.

“I didn’t.You did,”he said.“You didn’t know it,but I gave you a test today.I listened to every word you said.Whenever you were complaining(抱怨),I added a stone to your bags.Whenever you talked about something with positive(积极的)thinking,I took out a stone. And now look at your backpacks.”Our backpacks were full of stones.

When you are reading something in English, you may often meet with a new word. What's the best way to know it?

You may look it up in the English-Chinese dictionary. It will tell you a lot about the word: the pronunciation, the Chinese meaning and how to use the word. But how can you know where the word is in thousands of English words? How to find it in the dictionary both quickly and correctly? First, all the English words are arranged (安排) in the letter order. In the dictionary you can first see the words beginning with letter A, then B, C, D…. That means, if there are two words "desert" and "pull", "desert" will be certainly before "pull". Then if there are two words both beginning with the same lette r, you may look at the second letter. Then the third, the fourth…For example, "pardon" is before "plough", "judge" before "just", etc.

There are about 5,000 different kinds of ladybugs in the world. They come in many different colors. Their bright colors warn other animals or insects not to eat them. Ladybugs taste bad. A bird or a frog that eats a ladybug will remember the bright colors and it will

not eat another ladybug with the same colors again. When ladybugs are in

danger, they will give out a fluid(液体)that tastes terrible.

In many cultures, the ladybug is considered to be a symbol of good luck.

Most ladybugs are kind to humans. They eat other insects which destroy crops.

One ladybug can eat up to 5,000 insets in its lifetime.

Ladybugs have six short legs. They live in many different places, including green lands, forests, cities, the countryside and along rivers. Different ladybugs have different spots(点). Some of them don’t have spots at all. The most common kind in North America is the 7-spotted ladybug. The 7-spotted ladybugs are the most active from spring to autumn. As we know, all living things have to eat food. For a man, a tiger,

a fish, a bird, or even a worm, food is necessary. Generally speaking, all

living things are sure to die without food. In every part of the world,

many different kinds of animals share living places and live in

communities (群落) together. They are connected in a food chain (链).

Within a food chain, some living things are producers and some

are consumers (消费者). Plants are producers because they use sunlight,

soil and other things to make their own food. Animals are consumers

because they have to eat other animals or plants.

There are four different kinds of consumers in the animal kingdom. A carnivore is an animal that only eats other animals. An herbivore is an animal that only eats plants. An omnivore is an animal that eats both plants and animals. A scavenger is an animal that eats dead animals.

一、中考英语阅读理解汇编

1.阅读短文,判断正误。

People send birthday greetings by using cards in both eastern and western countries. It is not known when and where exactly the tradition of sending birthday cards began. It is believed that it began in England in the early nineteenth century. In those days people sent birthday cards when they couldn't wish somebody a happy birthday in person.

In 1840 the first stamp was used in Britain and sending birthday cards became easier, cheaper and more popular. The development of color printing processes (工艺流程) in the 1930s also helped to increase sales of birthday cards.

Today cards are often given with a present, even when people can express their wishes face to face. In recent times e-cards have also become popular. Many people are starting to use e-cards instead of traditional cards because they are free, environmentally friendly and easy to arrive. So will e-cards take place of paper cards completely in ten or twenty years? Probably not. For example, for kids and old people, they don't use e-cads very often.

I started the project because I wanted to find out more about the world, help people understand each other better, and make the world a better place—and I still do! It’s really not easy to find people in every country, but lots of people have helped me. Thank you!

We look up all countries, and I think of questions I would like to ask. I’m interested in history, stars and planets, science, wild animals, film making, writing, reading, dancing, and how people protect the environment in lots of places all over the world! I also want to know how people live, what food they eat, and what school is like! Until now, I’ve written 780 letters and gotten 327 replies.
