The Third Period
Teaching Aims:
1.Do some listening to improve the students’ listening ability.
2.Do some exercises to review some important words and phrases learnt in the last period.

How to help the students improve their listening ability.

1.Review method to help the students remember some important words and phrases they have learnt before and use them correctly.
2.Listening-answering activity to help the students go through the listening materials.

Teaching Procedures:
Step Ⅰ Greetings a nd Revision
Greet the whole class as usual.
T:Yesterday we learned a passage about teamwork.Now who can retell the passage in your own words?
:Let me try.The text is about the importance of teamwork.It tells us S

teamwork is necessary because some work in our life cannot be accomplished by someone alone.To make the team function well,all members should help and
support each other and be clear about their roles.What’s more,a project team
is compared with a rugby team in the text.In the latter part of the passage,the
author tells us it is also important to know every member’s strengths and
shortcomings,because different personalities and abilities can fit
different requirements in the society.
T:Very good.
Step Ⅱ Listening
T:Next,we will go on with Listening.But before we listen,we have some
questions to answer.Clear?
Ss:Yeah.
T:The first question is how much of your time is spent reading.
:I think the time for us to read is too limited.Every day we must learn S

many different subjects.Maybe,two or three hours in a week are spent in
reading.
T:I see.You are always busy with your studies.But don’t forget reading is
a good way to get knowledge.Can you tell me what you read in your limited
spare time?
:I like reading all kinds of novels.

:I prefer to read magazines.I think it needs longer time to finish reading 4
a novel.
T:When you read,which topic interests you most?
:Sports interests me most,like most boys.

:I spend most of my time reading something about news and science.

T:Do you read any Chinese or English newspapers?
Ss:Sometimes.
T:Which part do you read?
:The part that is about campus life.

T:The material we will listen to is also about reading.I think you will learn something when you finish the listening.Let’s begin,OK?
Ss:OK!
T:First,have a look at the exercises by yourselves and try to guess the comments of the material according to the exercises.Then listen to the tape and finish the exercises.
(Teacher gives them a few minutes to read the exercises and then plays the tape for the first time.When playing it for the second time,teacher may pause for the students to write down some important information.If necessary,teacher plays parts of the material more times.Finally teacher checks the answers with the whole class.)
Step Ⅲ Language Practice
T:To master the important words and phrases we lear nt in this unit,we’ll do some exercises.Now look at the first exercise in Language Practice.Skim the text in Reading for a word or phrase with a meaning similar to the one underlined in each sentence.After a while,I’ll check your answers. (Teacher gives the students enough time to finish the exercise.Then check their answers and write them on the blackboard.)

T:Try to make up a new sentence using each word or phrase.
Ss:No problem.
(Teacher gives them enough time to make up sentences and then checks if their sentences are right.)

1.The house looks very old,but in reality it’s quite new.
2.This arrangement is only temporary.
3.The statements of the two witnesses conflict.
4.I wanted to go to Shanghai,and my wife wanted to go to Beijing,so we compromised on Guangdong.

7.He is a person with many short-comings.
8.I was embarrassed by his comments about my clothes.
T:OK.I’m very happy to see that you’ve mastered these words and phrases so well.Now it is time to do the second part in Language Practice.Scan the short passage to get the main idea,please.
(Give the students a few minutes to scan and then ask them some questions to help them understand the passage better.)
T:Have you finished your reading?
Ss:Yes.
T:Who knows what the short passage is about?

:The passage mainly tells us that a good coach is one of the most important 8
factors for the Chinese National Soccer Team to have got higher levels of
achievement.
T:Anything else?
:It also tells us what a coach should do to make the team perform better.

and phrases?
Ss:No.
T:Pay attention to the word form.Now,let’s begin.

necessary,you can have a discussion with your partner.Are you clear about
the requirement?

(Teacher gives them enough time to finish the passage and goes around the
class to help them.At last,teacher checks their answers.)
