I learned that shouting and threats of punishment would result in a disaster. Coming up against their behaviour could only make the job harder and their behaviour more extreme. I found something that worked, though. There was a very naughty boy in the nursery and a teacher who was generally very confident with the children was asked to take charge of him. One day the boy joined a session in the room next to mine. His appearance created an atmosphere of tension. He spent the entire session running around, hitting and kicking, and destroying property.I was in the craft room working with some other children when my co-worker told me that this boy’s teacher was in tears, and could not get control of the situation. As we were talking, the boy ran in. I told my co-worker that I would take care of him.I closed the door. He was full of energy, throwing things around and making a huge mess. But I could see that he was doing all these to annoy me. He needed connection, and this was the only way he knew how to ask for it. So I sat back down and kept quiet. Then he slowed down and began making a rocket. I talked to him about it. We continued like this for a few minutes before I slipped into the conversation:“So what happened today?”It was purely a question, no blame or anger in my tone. I believe that if I had criticized him, the gate that was slowly opening would have shut firmly closed. He told me that the teacher didn’t let him do what he knew well due to safety but asked him to do what he disliked. He also admitted that he had enjoyed making her run around and saw it as a game. I explained that his teacher had not seen it as a game and was very upset. This again was stated simply as a fact. I suggested that next time he had a session, he talk about what he hoped to do at the start, which might be easier for everyone. He agreed and was quiet for a moment. Then he looked at me with tears in his eyes before quietly asking if he could go to find his teacher to apologize.51. The boy made trouble for his teacher because he ______.A. was accused of destroying propertyB. was told not to yell at other childrenC. was made to do things against his willD. was blamed for creating an air of tension52. Why didn’t the author do anything about the boy’s bad behavior at first?A. She didn’t want to make it worse.B. She didn’t mind the huge mess at all.C. She was tired of shouting and threats.D. She hadn’t thought of a coping strategy.53. The author managed to get the boy to talk to her by ______.A. playing games with himB. giving him a good suggestionC. describing his teacher’s feelingsD. avoiding making critical remarks54. Why did the boy have tears in his eyes in the end?A. He was sorry about his reputation.B. He was regretful about his behavior.C. He was fearful of the author’s warning.D. He was sad for the author’s misunderstanding.BLondon’s newest skyscraper (摩天大楼) is called the Shard and it cost about 430 million pounds to build. At a height of almost 310 metres, it is the tallest building in Europe. The Shard has completely changed the appearance of London. However, not everyone thinks that it is a change for the better. The Shard was designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano. When he began designing the Shard for London, Piano wanted a very tall building that looked like a spire (尖顶). He wanted the glass surfaces to reflect the sky and the city. The sides of the building aren’t regular. So the building has an unusual shape. It looks like a very thin, sharp piece of broken glass. And that is how the building got the name: the Shard. Piano says that the spire shape of the Shard is part of a great London tradition. The shape reminds him of the spires of the churches of London or the tall masts (桅杆) of the ships that were once on the river Thames. The Shard has 87 floors. At the top, there is an observatory. At the moment the building is empty, but eventually there will be a five-star hotel. There will also be top quality restaurants, apartments and offices. Before buildi ng work began, a lot of people didn’t want the Shard though the plans were approved. Now they are still unhappy about the Shard. Some critics say that such a tall skyscraper might be good in a city like New York, but not in London. They say that the best thing about the Shard is its spire shape. But that is the only thing. There is no decoration, only flat surfaces. The Egyptians did that 4,500 years ago. They also think the Shard is too big for London. It destroys the beauty of the city.Other critics don’t like what the Shard seems to represent. They say that the Shard shows how London is becoming more unequal. Only very rich people can afford to buy the expensive private apartments and stay in the hotel. But the people who live near the Shard are among the poorest in London. So the Shard seems a symbol of the division in society between the very rich and the poor. The Shard now dominates the London skyline. It is not certain, however, that ordinary London citizens will ever accept it as a valuable addition to the city.55. London’s newest skyscraper is called the Shard because of ______.A. its costB. its sizeC. its shapeD. its height56. When he designed the Shard, Piano wanted it to ______.A. change London’s skylineB. inherit Lond on’s traditionC. imitate the Egyptian styleD. attract potential visitors57. The critics who refer to social division think the Shard ______.A. is only preferred by the richB. is intended for wealthy peopleC. is far away from the poor areaD. is popular only with Londoners58. Which would be the best title for the passage?A. The Shard: Cheers and ClapsB. The Shard: Work of a Great ArchitectC. The Shard: New Symbol of London?D. The Shard: A Change for the Better?CWorking with a group of baboons (狒狒) in the Namibian desert, Dr. Alecia Carter of the Department of Zoology, Cambridge University set baboons learning tasks involving a novel food and a familiar food hidden in a box. Some baboons were given the chance to watch another baboon who already knew how to solve the task, while others had to learn for themselves. To work out how brave or anxious the baboons were, Dr. Carter presented them either with a novel food or a threat in the form of a model of a poisonous snake. She found that personality had a major impact on learning. The braver baboons learnt, but the shy ones did not learn the task although they watched the baboon perform the task of finding the novel food just as long as the brave ones did. In effect, despite being made aware of what to do, they were still too shy to do what the experienced baboon did.The same held true for anxious baboons compared with calm ones. The anxious individuals learnt the task by observing others while those who were relaxed did not, even though they spent more time watching. This mismatch between collecting social information and using it shows that personality plays a key role in social learning in animals, something that has previously been ignored in studies on how animals learn to do things. The findings are significant because they suggest that animals may perform poorly in cognitive (认知的) tasks not because they aren’t clever enough to solve them, but because they are too shy or nervous to use the social information. The findings may impact how we understand the formation of culture in societies through social learning. If some individuals are unable to get information from others because they don’t associate with the knowledgeable individuals, or they are too shy to use the information once they have it, information may not travel between all group members, preventing the formation of a culture based on social learning.59. What is the first paragraph mainly about?A. The design of Dr. Carter’s research.B. The results of Dr. Carter’s research.C. The purpose of Dr. Carter’s research.D. The significance of Dr. Carter’s research.60. According to the research, which baboons are more likely to complete a new learning task?A. Those that have more experience.B. Those that can avoid potential risks.C. Those that like to work independently.D. Those that feel anxious about learning.61. Which best illustrates the “mismatch” mentioned in Paragraph 4?A. Some baboons are intelligent but slow in learning.B. Some baboons are shy but active in social activities.C. Some baboons observe others but don’t follow them.D. Some baboons perform new tasks but don’t concentrate.62. Dr. Carter’s findings indicate that our culture might be formed through ______.A. storing informationB. learning from each otherC. understanding different peopleD. travelling between social groupsYou’ve flown halfway around the world; you’ve sniffed out this place that nobody in Falongland or Thailand seems to have ever heard of; so what on earth is there to do here? You consider this question as you sink into an old wooden beach chair that holds you above the sand.It was a long journey from Bangkok to Huaplee. By the time you found the bus station and got yourself sorted out, it took almost as long as the flight from Falongland.Huaplee is located just south of Hua Hin, about two hundred kilometres from Bangkok, down the west side of the Gulf of Thailand. Not many tourists find this place, and the ones that do wonder if finding it has been their purpose all along. There’s an apparent laziness that surrounds you here. It’s what this place offers, and it’s free of charge. The small waves that tap the shoreline seem to slow everything down. You settle into your beach chair in preparation for a long rest. You sit there and watch the sea. It’s early afternoon, so the cook comes out and asks what you’d like to eat this evening. Before long he’s rushed off to the market to buy the ingredients for whatever it was that you ordered—every meal fresh and to order. No menu here. There is no poolside noise here but just that wonderfully warm, clear blue sea. There’s no street noise. The only sounds are the murmurs of nature. For now you just count your blessings (福祉), listing them in the sand with your toe (脚趾). You don’t have to worry about being late for work. You don’t have to do anything. The beach to your right stretches off to the horizon (地平线), slowly narrowing to nothingness only to re-emerge again on your left, now steadily widening until it covers the chair beneath you. Sand to your left and sand to your right; it’s unbroken, endless. No start, no end, just sand, sun, and peace. Step off it, and you re-enter the world of traffic, stress, work, and hurry.Normally you’re the type who can’t sit still for more than ten minutes, but you’re on Huaplee Lazy Beach now and, in the right frame of mind, it stretches all the way around the world.“How could it take me so long to find it?” you wonder.63. When the author first went to Huaplee Beach, ______.A. he found it unworthwhileB. he failed to sort himself outC. he became sensitive to smellD. he had difficulty in finding it64. What is special about the food service at Huaplee Beach?A. No menu.B. Free food.C. Self service.D. Quick delivery.65. In the author’s opinion, a tourist can enjoy Huaplee Beach most when he ______.A. sits in a beach chairB. forgets his daily routineC. plans a detailed scheduleD. draws pictures in the sand66. What does the author imply by his question at the end of the passage?A. He shouldn’t have counted his blessings.B. He should have understood the wonder of nature.C. He shouldn’t have spent so much time on the trip.D. He should have come to the place earlier. For most city people, the elevator is an unremarkable machine that inspires none of the enthusiasm or interest that Americans afford trains, jets, and even bicycles. Dr. Christopher Wilk is a member of a small group of elevator experts who consider this a misunderstanding. Without the elevator, they point out, there could be no downtown skyscrapers or tall buildings, and city life as we know it would be impossible. In that sense, they argue, the elevator’s role in American history has been no less significant than that of cars. In fact, according to Wilk, the car and the elevator have been locked in a “secret war” for over a century, with cars making it possible for people to spread horizontally (水平地), and elevators pushing them toward life in close groups of towering vertical (垂直的) columns. If we tend to ignore the significance of elevators, it might be because riding in them tends to be such a brief, boring, and even awkward experience—one that can involve unexpectedly meeting people with whom we have nothi ng in common, and an unpleasant awareness of the fact that we’re hanging from a cable in a long passage. In a new book, Lifted, German journalist and cultural studies professor Andreas Bernard directed all his attention to this experience, studying the origins of elevator and its relationship to humankind and finding that riding in an elevator has never been a totally comfortable experience. “After 150 years, we are still not used to it,” Bernard said. “We still have not exactly learned to cope with the mix ture of closeness and displeasure.” That mixture, according to Bernard, sets the elevator ride apart from just about every other situation we find ourselves in as we go about our lives.Today, as the world’s urban population explodes, and cities become more crowded, taller, and more crowded, America’s total number of elevators—900,000 at last count, according to Elevator World magazine’s “2012 Vertical Transportation Industry”—are a force that’s becoming more important than ever. And for the people who really, really love them, it seems like high time that we looked seriously at just what kind of force they are.67. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 1 refer to?A. The general view of elevators.B. The particular interests of experts.C. The desire for a remarkable machine.D. The enthusiasm for transport vehicles.68. The author’s purpose in mentioning cars is ______.A. to contrast their functions with elevators’B. to emphasize the importance of elevatorsC. to reveal their secret war against elevatorsD. to explain people’s preference for elevators69. According to Prof. Bernard, what has made the elevator ride different from other lifeexperiences?A. Vertical direction.B. Lack of excitement.C. Little physical space.D. Uncomfortable conditions.70. The author urges readers to consider ______.A. the exact number of elevator loversB. the serious future situation of elevatorsC. the role of elevators in city developmentD. the relationship between cars and elevators七选五:Parents and doctors have the same worry over especially low birthweight newborns. 71 A trend has therefore developed to make special formulas(配方)of extra nutrients and protein-rich foods for these tiny babies. Unfortunately, a British study has found that this practice could have negative long term effects, such as high blood pressure in adulthood.Between 1993 and 1995, Atul Singhal of the Institute of Child Health and his colleagues researched 299 full-term newborns, each of whom weighed very little for their age. The babies’moms had decided not to breastfeed(用母乳喂养).72 The rest received a formula with more nutrients and 28 percent more protein than the standard formula. The growth of all of these children was compared to that of 175 similarly low birthweight babies whose mothers had chosen to breastfeed their children for their first 9 months. 73 They found 83 babies from the normal-formula group,70 babies from the extra-formula group, and 95 babies from the breast fed group. 74 According to the latest data, children who had received the extra formula had significantly higher blood pressures than those in the other two groups.Seven human tests have indeed shown that when infants are overfed before being stopped breastfeeding, they have an increased possibility to become fat as youngsters. No matter how big a child is at birth, he or she will probably reach the same adult height no matter how quickly the baby grows. But reaching one’s adult size at a slow-to-moderate speed may have a lot of benefits, as Singhal says. 75A. Half of these children were given a normal infant(幼儿) formula for 9 monthsB. When they grow up, they might have high blood pressure.C. These babies have very little energy because they are so small.D. Six to eight years later, the researchers gave the children a series of measurements and tests.E. The results were quite surprising.F. Tiny babies will grow much slower if they are not specially fed.G. His advice to parents: Be patient. Don’t rush a child’s growth.语法填空:In my 18 years of life, there have been many things. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Today there are three different kinds of New Yorkers: the people who act as if they were born here: the people who are here and wish to be elsewhere: and the collection of virtual New Yorkers all over the world, who wish they were living in New York. These are the three states of mind and what they have in common are longing and illusion. In fact, it´ s a city of dreamers. What makes New York special? New Yorkers are convinced of its specialness—but Toronto is more diverse, London is larger, Washington is more powerful. So why does New York think it´ s the capital of the world?People often explain the problems in European cities by citing inequality. But New York today is one of the most unequal cities in America. In 2010, 1 percent of New Yorkers earned 45 percent of its income. That works out to an average of $3.7 million a year for the city´s top 34,500 households. The average daily income of this group is greater than the average annual income of the city´ s bottom 10 percent. So why would people still come to try their luck in this tough place? Is it opportunity or illusion that draws them? They come because any newcomer can find a place in the hierarchy of New York. If you look at a New York City restaurant, for example, the cook might be French, the people washing dishes might be Mexican, the hostess might be Russian, the owner might be British. They are not all equal. They earn different rates. But they work together to get food to hungry people. What New York demonstrates is this: immigration works. The city can use its immigrants, eventhe illegal ones. Though they broke the law by illegally crossing the borders, the city´ s economy would be a shell of itself had they not, and it would collapse if they were deported. Attracted here by the founding myth of the city, each immigrant is seeking to escape from history, personal and political. For him, New York is the city of the second chance.第46题The writer mentions the three kinds of New Yorkers to stress that______.A.they share the same longingB.they are in pursuit of dreamsC.they are proud of their birthplaceD.they wish to live in another place第47题In the eyes of New Yorkers, their city is______.A.powerfulB.diverseC.specialrge第48题The figures in paragraph 3 are given to show that New York______.A.favors the luckyB.favors the localsC.is a city of inequalityD.is a city of opportunities第49题People keep coming to New York because they can find jobs that______.A.challenge themB.suit them wellC.pay them wellD.raise their status第50题It is implied in the text that New York is______.A.a tolerant cityB.a wealthy cityC.a mythical cityD.a historical city上一题下一题(51~55/共15题)ComprehensionDirections:Read the following two texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D.We´ ve read how babies stare longer and cry less when held by pretty people, and heard tales of handsome children doing better in school, given special attention by their teachers. In life, as in love, beautiful people seem to have it awfully easy. But what if we told you that when it comes to online dating, good looks could actually hurt you?According to a recent survey of 43,000 users by OK Cupid, an online dating site, the more men disagree about a woman´s looks, the more they end up liking her. What does that mean for ladies looking for a match? " We now have mathematical evidence that minimizing your´weaknesses´ is the opposite of what you should do," says the site´s co-founder, Christian Rudder. "If you´re a little fat, play it up. If you have a big nose, play it up. Statistically, the guys who don´ t like it can only help you, and the ones who do like it will be all the more excited. "The results of this study end up highlighting an idea that recent scientific research does indeed support. Which is this: the beautiful may have it good, but online, as in work and life, women who are too attractive don´t always have an advantage.Beauty creates more competition—among women, taught they must out-look each other for men and jobs and everyday satisfaction: and among men, who are competing for the most attractive prize. All of which might help explain why 47 percent of corporate recruiters believe it´s possible for a woman to suffer for being " too good-looking": why attractive women tend to face heightened examination from their female peers: or, finally, why men on OK Cupid end up contacting women who may ultimately be less attractive—because it removes the opposition. " If you suspect other men are uninterested, it means less competition," explains Rudder. " You might start thinking: maybe she´ s lonely... maybe she´ s just waiting to find a guy who appreciates her... at least I won´ t get lost in the crowd. "In the end, being beautiful will always have its blessings—but sometimes, there´ s more to an advantage than meets the eye.第51题It is generally believed that beautiful people______.A.have less difficulty in lifeB.are less worried about loveC.pay less attention to othersD.like to gaze at lovely babies第52题The OK Cupid survey found that men´ s arguments over a woman´ s looks______.A.have little meaningB.benefit online datingC.will actually hurt herD.add to her popularity第53题Christian Rudder advises women to______.A.play up their physical advantagesB.view their popularity scientificallyC.highlight their physical weaknessesD.accept guys who are willing to help第54题The attitude of women toward their attractive peers is______.A.criticalB.friendlyC.conservativeD.straightforward第55题The main idea of the text is that a woman´ s good looks______.A.help to shape ideas of beautyB.can put her at a disadvantageC.end up with blessings for herD.will always appeal to the eye上一题下一题(56~60/共15题)ComprehensionDirections:Read the following two texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Camps have always reflected children´s dreams and parents´fears. In the 1880s, many middle-class families worried that industrial society had broken off some tie to the frontier. Boys were growing soft: too much time with their mothers and teachers, not enough manly activity. So the early camps promised to take weakly boys out into camp life in the woods so that the pursuit of health could be combined with the practical knowledge. Those first campers were wilderness tourists: today a wilderness is anyplace without bandwidth. Allowing cell phone contradicts the point of sleepaway camp: if 19th century campers were meant to regain lost survival skills, 21st century campers need to work on their social skill. They are often missing some basic interactive instruments: fantastically digitally aware, they are less familiar with the ideas of sharing their space, their stuff or the attention of the adults around them. For kids who are allowed to text during dinner, who have their parents whenever they get in trouble or need a ride, a little self-government is probably long overdue. Most camps require kids to leave their phones at home, which shows that the resistance often comes not from the kids but from parents. It´ s known that parents pack off their children with two cell phones, so they can hand over one and still be able to slip away and call. Parents question camp directors about why they can´t reach their kids by phone. Some services let camps post news and pictures to help the families feel as if they are with the kids at camp. But that just invites inquiry about why Johnny looks sad or how Jenny´ s jeans got torn.Even as they yield in varying degrees to the demands of parents, camps endeavor to tell us our kids need a break from our eager interest and exhausting expectations. Camps talk about building independence, argue that having kids learn to solve their own problems and turn to peers and counselors for support is a key part of the experience. The implications are clear. They´ re lighting campfires, hiding and seeking, doing things that feel wonderfully improper if just because they involve getting dirtier than usual. Nothing to worry about, Mom.第56题The whole point of camp in the 19th century is to______.A.acquire the lost survival skillsB.escape from industrial societyC.enjoy beautiful natural sceneryD.explore the woods in the frontier第57题For campers today, wilderness is where______.A.they cannot use cell phonesB.they can realize their dreamsC.they stay far away from homeD.they are trained to be stronger第58题According to the text, today´ s kids are______.A.aware of governing themselvesB.skilled in social communicationC.good at using electronic devicesD.short of the attention from adults第59题After seeing the posted news and pictures of their kids at camp, parents would feel .A.curiousB.pleasantC.relievedD.worried第60题As stated in the last paragraph, camps suggest parents______.A.take back their kids´ cell phonesB.leave their kids alone for a whileC.let their kids have a rest from studyD.call their kids only when necessary上一题下一题(61~65/共5题)ComprehensionDirections:Read the texts from a magazine article in which five people talk about tipping in a restaurant. For questions 36-40, match the name of each person to one of the statements (A-G) given below. It is encouraging to see that, whether out of sympathy for animals or a concern for their own health or both, people are starting to realize that it does not pay to eat too far up on the food chain. Meat need not be what is for dinner. Factory farming is barbaric and cruel. Every person who reduces the use of animals in his life is performing a lifesaving act.Jeff:I am ready to be a vegetarian, but in our country, farmers, food producers, restaurants and supermarkets are not prepared to support me. We all know that it is much easier and less expensive to get a hamburger at McDonald´s or Chinese takeout or a roast chicken from the supermarket than it is to take the time to shop for, assemble and cook a tasty, nutritious and fulfilling vegetarian meal.Rod:I´ve heard another term for vegetarians: beady-eyed vegetarians. They´11 eat things with beady eyes(fish, chicken)but not with big, sad eyes(cows, lambs). A friend of mine explained it by saying he would eat only things he thought he could kill himself. He figures he can kill a fish but not a cow. That seems like a more honest and consistent rationale than some of the others I´ ve heard.Jerry:As a moral vegetarian, I have found that there is great misunderstanding about vegetarian principles in our society. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET.Text 1Today there are three different kinds of New Yorkers: the people who act as if they were born here; the people who are here and wish to be elsewhere; and the collection of virtual New Yorkers all over the world, who wish they were living in New York. These are the three states of mind and what they have in common are longing and illusion. In fact, it' s a city of dreamers. What makes New York special? New Yorkers are convinced of its specialness--but Toronto is more diverse, London is larger, Washington is more powerful. So why does New York think it' s the capital of the world?People often explain the problems in European cities by citing inequality. But New York today is one of the most unequal cities in America. In 2010, 1 percent of New Yorkers earned 45 percent of its income. That works out to an average of $ 3.7 million a year for the city' s top 34,500households. The average daily income of this group is greater than the average annual income of the city's bottom 10 percent. The city can use its immigrants, even the illegal ones. Though they broke the law by illegally crossing the borders, the city' s economy would be a shell of itself had they not, and it would collapse if they were deported. Attracted here by the founding myth of the city, each immigrant is seeking to escape from history, personal and political. For him, New York is the city of the second chance.46. The writer mentions the three kinds of New Yorkers to stress that_______.[ A ] they share the same longing [ B ] they are in pursuit of dreams[ C ] they are proud of their birthplace [ D ] they wish to live in another place47. In the eyes of New Yorkers, their city is______[ A ] powerful[ B ] diverse[ C ] special[ D ] large48. The figures in paragraph 3 are given to show that New York_________[ A ] favors the lucky [ B ] favors the locals[ C ] is a city of inequality [ D ] is a city of opportunities49. People keep coming to New York because they can find jobs that_______[ A ] challenge them [ B ] suit them well[ C ] pay them well [ D ] raise their status50. It is implied in the text that New York is_________[ A ] a tolerant city [ B ] a wealthy city[ C ] a mythical city [ D ] a historical cityText 2We' ve read how babies stare longer and cry less when held by pretty people, and heard tales of handsome children doing better in school, given special attention by their teachers. In life, as in love, beautiful people seem to have it awfully easy. But what if we told you that when it comes to online dating, good looks could actually hurt you?According to a recent survey of 43,000 users by OK Cupid, an online dating site, the more men disagree about a woman' s looks, the more they end up liking her. What does that mean for ladies looking for a match? " We now have mathematical evidence that minimizing your 'weaknesses' is the opposite of what you should do," says the site's co-founder, ChristianRudder. "If you' re a little fat, play it up. If you have a big nose, play it up. Statistically, the guys who don't like it can only help you, and the ones who do like it will be all the more excited. "The results of this study end up highlighting an idea that recent scientific research does indeed support. Which is this: the beautiful may have it good, but online, as in work and life, women who are too attractive don't always have an advantage.Beauty creates more competition--among women, taught they must out-look each other for men and jobs and everyday satisfaction; and among men, who are competing for the most attractive prize. All of which might help explain why 47 percent of corporate recruiters believe it' s possible for a woman to suffer for being "too good-looking" ; why attractive women tend to face heightened examination from their female peers; or, finally, why men on OK Cupid end up contacting women who may ultimately be less attractive--because it removes the opposition. "If you suspect other men are uninterested, it means less competition," explains Rudder. "You might start thinking: maybe she' s lonely.., maybe she' s just waiting to find a guy who appreciates her.., at least I won't get lost in the crowd. "In the end, being beautiful will always have its blessings--but sometimes, there' s more to an advantage than meets the eye.51. It is generally believed that beautiful people[ A] have less difficulty in life [ B ] are less worried about love[ C ] pay less attention to others [ D ] like to gaze at lovely babies52. The OK Cupid survey found that men' s arguments over a woman' s looks_____[A ] have little meaning [ B ] benefit online dating[ C ] will actually hurt her [ D ] add to her popularity53. Christian Rudder advises women to_______[ A] play up their physical advantages [ B ] view their popularity scientifically[ C ] highlight their physical weaknesses [ D ] accept guys who are willing to help54. The attitude of women toward their attractive peers is______[ A ] critical [ B ] friendly[ C ] conservative [ D ] straightforward55. The main idea of the text is that a woman' s good looks_______[ A ] help to shape ideas of beauty [ B ] can put her at a disadvantage[ C ] end up with blessings for her [ D ] will always appeal to the eyeText 3Camps have always reflected children's dreams and parents' fears. Those first campers were wilderness tourists; today a wilderness is anyplace without band-width. Allowing cell phone contradicts the point of sleep away camp: if 19th century campers were meant to regain lost survival skills, 21st century campers need to work on their social skill. They are often missing some basic interactive instruments; fantastically digitally aware, they are less familiar with the ideas of sharing their space, their stuff or the attention of the adults around them. For kids who are allowed to text during dinner, who have their parents whenever they get in trouble or need a ride, a little self-government is probably long overdue. Most camps require kids to leave their phones at home, which shows that the resistance often comes not from the kids but from parents. It's known that parents pack off their children with two cell phones, so they can hand over one and still be able to slip away and call. Parents question camp directors about why they can' t reach their kids by phone. Some services let camps post news and pictures to help the families feel as if they are with the kids at camp. But that just invites inquiry about why Johnny looks sad or how Jenny' s jeans got torn.Even as they yield in varying degrees to the demands of parents, camps endeavor to tell us our kids need a break from our eager interest and exhausting expectations. Camps talk about building independence, argue that having kids learn to solve their own problems and turn to peers and counselors for support is a key part of the experience. The implications are clear. They' re lighting campfires, hiding and seeking, doing things that feel wonderfully improper if just because they involve getting dirtier than usual. Nothing to worry about,Mom.56. The whole point of camp in the 19th century is to[ A] acquire the lost survival skills [ B ] escape from industrial society [ C ] enjoy beautiful natural scenery [ D ] explore the woods in the frontier57. For campers today, wilderness is where_____[ A ] they cannot use cell phones [ B ] they can realize their dreams [ C ] they stay far away from home [ D ] they are trained to be stronger58. According to the text, today' s kids are_______[ A] aware of governing themselves [ B ] skilled in social communication[ C ] good at using electronic devices [ D ] short of the attention from adults59. After seeing the posted news and pictures of their kids at camp, parents would feel______[ A ] curious[ B ] pleasant[ C ] relieved[ D ] worded60. As stated in the last paragraph, camps suggest parents______[ A ] take back their kids' cell phones [ B ] leave their kids alone for a while[ C ] let their kids have a rest from study [ D ] call their kids only when necessaryPart BDirections:Read the following texts in which five people wrote about being a vegetarian. For questions61-65, match the name of each person (61-65) to one of the statements (A-G) given below. Mark your answers on your ANSWER SHEET.Laurie:It is encouraging to see that, whether out of sympathy for animals or a concern for their own health or both, people are starting to realize that it does not pay to eat too far up on the food chain. We all know that it is much easier and less expensive to get a hamburger at McDonald' s or Chinese takeout or a roast chicken from the supermarket than it isto take the time to shop for, assemble and cook a tasty, nutritious and fulfilling vegetarian meal.Rod:I've heard another term for vegetarians: beady-eyed vegetarians. They' 11 eat things with beady eyes ( fish, chicken) but not with big, sad eyes ( cows, lambs). A friend of mine explained it by saying he would eat only things he thought he could kill himself. He figures he can kill a fish but not a cow. That seems like a more honest and consistent rationale than some of the others I' ve heard.Jerry:As a moral vegetarian, I have found that there is great misunderstanding about vegetarian principles in our society. While some vegetarians keep off animals as a matter of health, we moral vegetarians don' t want other animals to live for us, nor do we want other animals to die for us, as they do for food, clothing and wasteful scientific research. All animals live for their own sake, not for mine.Ellen:Why do some people think that animals and human beings are the same? In my opinion, a human life is worth a lot more than an animal' s. I think that wemust stop thinking of meat eaters as killers. Vegetarians also kill vegetable life. Is there any difference? Eat vegetables and meat; both help you to be healthy and allow you to have all the nutrients your bodies need. Now match the name of each person (61 to65) to the appropriate statement.Note: there are two extra statements.61. Laurie [ A] All animals have the right to live for themselves.62. Jeff [ B ] Some vegetarians in fact eat small-sized animals.63. Rod [ C ] Vegetarians need to do more to save animals' lives.64. Jerry [ D ] Some people have overstressed the rights of animals.65. Ellen [ E ] Vegetarians should be consistent in their eating habits.[ F] How can I become a vegetarian without a favorable environment?[G]Eating less meat saves not only the life of animals but also that ofyour own.SECTION Ⅳ Writing( 40 minutes)Directions:You should write your responses to both Part A and Part B of this section on your ANSWER SHEET.Part A66. AWhile we are on the subject of crime, our listener question this week comes from Mohamad Firouzi in Iran. He wants to know about the history of Alcatraz Island and the prison that once operated there.Alcatraz Island is in the harbor of San Francisco, California. It is best known for being a federal prison, which was also called “The Rock.” It was once the most famous prison in America. Alcatraz was a military prison from the late eighteen fifties until the nineteen thirties. Then it became a federal prison for the country’s worst criminals. These included murderers, bank robbers and kidnappers. One of the main reasons federal officials chose Alcatraz Island to detain these prisoners was because they thought it would be impossible for prisoners to escape.Cold, deep and dangerous waters surround the island. Also, the distance between the island and San Francisco is too far for most humans to swim. No prisoner was ever officially reported to have successfully escaped. However, in nineteen sixty-two, three men broke out of the prison. Each man worked very hard at night for many months to cut through the stone wall of his cell. They made false heads out of paper, paint and hair. On the night of June eleventh, the men placed the heads in their beds to make it look as if they were sleeping. Then, the prisoners escaped through the holes in their cells to get to the water. The men were never seen or heard from again. It is believed that they drowned while trying to swim to San Francisco. The prison closed in nineteen sixty-three because of the high cost of keeping prisoners there and the need for major repairs. The last prisoners were moved to other jails. In nineteen seventy-two, the United States Congress passed a bill creating the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Alcatraz Island and the old prison are part of this area. Each year, more than one million people visit Alcatraz to see the prison ers’ cells and listen to stories about the jail’s history. But unlike the prisoners who once lived there, visitors can escape from the prison whenever they want and return back across the harbor to San Francisco.21. The text mainly tells us________.A. about the history of Alcatraz Island and the prison there.B. about the history of Alcatraz Island.C. about a military prison.D. about the subject of crime.22. Why did federal officials make Alcatraz the most famous prison in America?A. Because no prisoner successfully escaped from the prison.B. Because Alcatraz was Alcatraz Island.C. Because Alcatraz was a military prison.D. Because cold, deep and dangerous waters surround the island.23. Paragraph 5 is written to ________.A. tell us the three prisoners escaped the prison.B. prove prisoners couldn’t successfully escape from the prison.C. tell us how prisoners escaped the prison.D. tell us the three prisoners could make false heads out of paper, paint and hair.24. Now Alcatraz ________.A. is a place of interest.B. detains some prisoners.C. is where the United States Congress is.D. is still the most famous prison.BLast Thursday, I had the pleasure of visiting with Deputy Superintendent Pedro Martinez, Principal Neddy Alvarez and her staff at Western High School, located in the Clark County School District, in Las Vegas. The school undertook a comprehensive effort to completely transform the culture of the school and added a motivated group of talented teachers. Western altered(改变)the school day to add opportunities for students to get additional credits toward graduation and created smaller learning groups. As part of these comprehensive changes, the school’s leadership also focused on four main reforms to transform their school.First, improvements started with the change in the relationship between the school and students to create a caring atmosphere at the school. Using the “Capturing Kids’ Hearts” strategies, school leadership and teachers began building a trusting environment and students and families described seeing changes aimed at improving student outcomes and ensuring the success of every student. The school day was altered to add more options for students to obtain additional credits toward graduation. Students and teachers were grou ped into “houses,” so that smaller groups of teachers and counselors(辅导员)could create one-on-one relationships with students. Teachers and counselors said that the altered school day provides time to address student’s individual concerns and develop individualized learning plans to put every student on a path to graduation. The school also made changes to encourage parents to support school and encourage real dialogues between parents and the teachers and leaders at Western. Funded in part through the United Way, the school created a family engagement center to get parents more involved in their children’s education, particularly parents of English language learners. Parents like Ally Gaona and Martha Mendez told me that they had a voice and the tools to eng age in their children’s learning and that they recognize that the main responsibility for their children’s learning must rest with the parents. Parents were passionate about these positive changes and said that these changes signaled to the entire the community that the school was serious about family engagement.25. What is the main purpose of the passage?A.To attract people to the school.B. To talk about the school reforms.C. To introduce the schoolD. To introduce the relationship between the school and students.26. How many main reforms are mentioned in the passage?A. TwoB. ThreeC. FourD. Five27. Which statement is the right according to the passage?A. Parents didn’t support the reforms.B. The reforms intended to improve student outcomes and ensure the success of every student.C. The school asked parents to donate their money.D. the school was not serious about family engagement.CBEIJING - China will build a nation-wide network within three to five years to monitor the impact of air pollution on health, a latest step to deal with a persistent smog crisis in big cities, an official said.A total of 43 monitoring spots will be set up in 16 provinces and municipalities frequently engulfed by smog so as to facilitate research on air pollutants in different regions, the impact on the health of vulnerable groups and the study of related diseases, said Xu Dongqun, an official with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. With funds allocated by the central government, the study will provide reference for preventive efforts to reduce the PM 2.5, Xu said. In 1983, the young tech innovator was attending a conference in Aspen when he and the group decided to bury as a stunt during a design convention. The tube that was filled with an eclectic collection of goods- ranging from the then-new apple mouse to a six-pack of beer for the people who discovered the time capsule- was meant to be dug up 20 years later. There was a problem with that plan, however, as everyone involved forgot where it was buried. The final discovery happened at the hands of the crew from the National Geographic Channel`s reality show called Diggers. The discovery was well documented and is surely going to be featured on an upcoming episode, and even the experts had problems finding this particular treasure. CNET reports that in spite of their preparations and clear idea of where the 13-foot-long tube was, it still took them two hours to dig it up using heavy machinery. To anyone removed from the tech industry, the accomplishment in finding the tube appears to be the biggest accomplishment. To others, the most interesting object would likely be the `Lisa` mouse placed in the tube by the hands of a then-28-year-old Jobs. The Lisa Mouse, which Jobs named after his daughter, was one of the first commercial computer mice soled publicly, making it a rarity at the time. The Aspen Historical Society is going to help the show creators catalogue the tube`s contents- but no word yet whether or not the Diggers cracked open one of the six bottles of Boddington`s Ale that was left inside for the people who found the tube.33.Who found the time capsule buried by Steve Jobs?A.
