第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)For your next out-of-this-world vacation, you now have the option of literally going out of this world—but it’ll cost you $ 40 million. Then again, can you really put a price tag on having the time of your life? According to a new report from Popular Mechanics, Russia is looking to build a luxury hotel in outer space. There you will wake up to a breathtaking blue planet—the earth! The hotel is expected to be stationed on the International Space Station (ISS).
While space tourism itself isn’t exactly a novel idea, the notion of building a hotel out there hasn’t been raised before. Real ly, other companies are still focused on the transportation part of the puzzle — after all, a trip to space is enough for most folks.
According to Popular Mechanics, the hotel will include a luxury orbital suite with big windows, personal hygiene (卫生) facilities, exercise equipment, and yes, WiFi. Because if you can’t share your experience on social media, did it really even happen?
Of course, the reasons behind the hotel aren’t just for fun and games. Apparently, space tourism might be able to help the Russians pay for another module to add to the international Space Station. Russian space contractor RKK Energia is currently building the first such module, which will give scientists a laboratory and power supply station from which to conduct tests.
If any of this is going to happen, however, Russia is going to have to hurry. With the ISS expected to be out of use in 2028, there’s little time to build the hotel and find wealthy tourists to actually buy a trip into outer space.
So if you’ve recently come into a fortune and are interested in investing in what could be the time of your life, ISS is calling your name.

B.Visitors are required to take exercise each day.
C.Space travel is not possible without the Internet.
D.Tourists tend to share traveling experiences online.
4、The hotel will be built to provide Russian scientists with
A.fun and games B.financial support
C.space contractors D.more time in space
22.(8分)This year marks the 170th anniversary of Paul Gauguin’s birth. He lived for just 54 years but he packed his brief life with activity.
The French painter spent his early childhood in Peru before returning to France. As an adult, he continued to travel a lot. Most famously, he spent much of the last decade of his life in Tahiti, an island in southern Pacific Ocean. Indeed, Gauguin is best known for his colorful paintings of Tahitians and their culture.
The restlessness of this great painter has been normal among modern artists since the middle of the 19th century. They’re never satisfied for long with a certain style or way of life. Once something becomes conventional, it’s turned down.
The artistic culture that Gauguin developed from was that of Impressionism (印象派). Painters like Claude Monet had wanted to paint how they saw the world, not how their teachers taught them it should be seen. Gauguin, and similar artists like his friend Vincent van Gogh, moved even further away from “respectable” art than the Impressionists. For them, it was not simply a matter of seeing the world differently, but feeling and thinking about it differently, too.
Gauguin saw, felt and thought differently from most members of European society.
He thought that European culture was too fancy and not spontaneous. This is why he turned to the traditions of other parts of the world, like Africa, and, eventually, Tahiti. Artists like Gauguin used the word “primitive” for these cultures, but not as a negative term. For him, Europe, in becoming modem, industrial and scientific, seemed less natural than other parts of the world.
In truth, Gauguin’s paintings may be unconventional but they are certainly not “primitive”. They are the work of a painter with great awareness of what he was doing. It was this awareness that made him such an important painter for those that came after, in the 20th century. When we look closely at the works of Gauguin we begin to understand Pablo Picasso, and especially Henri Matisse, a little better.
1、What can we infer about Gauguin’s life?
A.He had an unhappy childhood. B.He lived most of his life in Peru. C.He enjoyed painting in Tahiti. D.He preferred a traditional life style. 2、What’s the main purpose of Paragraph 4?
A.To explain why Gauguin’s work s were popular.
B.To point out where Gauguin’s inspiration came from.
C.To show Gauguin’s different understanding of painting.
D.To compare Gauguin’s painting style with Vincent van Gogh’s.
3、Which of the following best explains “spontaneous” underlined in Paragraph 5? A.Natural. B.Modern. C.Industrial. D.Scientific.
4、The author mentions Picasso and Matisse in the last paragraph to show ________. A.their styles are different from Gauguin’s B.great artists share many similarities C.they are as important as Gauguin D.Gauguin’s influence on their works 23.(8分)Are you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that time – about eight hours after you wake up – your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern. They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later.
In many parts of the world, people take naps(小睡) in the middle of the day. This is
especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problem such as heart disease.
Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterward. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap—even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.
1、Why do people feel sleepy in the early afternoon according to the text?
A.They eat too much for lunch.
B.They sleep too little at night.
C.Their body temperature becomes lower.
D.The weather becomes a lot warmer.
2、If you get up at 6:30 am, what is the best time for you to take a nap?
A.About 12:30 pm. B.About 1:30 pm.
C.About 2:30 pm. D.About 3:30 pm.
3、What would be the best title for the text?
A.Just for a Rest B.All for a Nap
C.A Special Sleep Pattern. D.Taking Naps in Warmer Climate.
24.(8分)Would you buy a car that can release calming smells into the air when you are stuck in heavy traffic? Would you buy a robot that smells like a human being?
Many people have seen the 3-D computer-made environments of virtual reality(虚拟现实). Now these virtual worlds will not just look and sound real. Researchers have created VR environments that even smell like the real ones. With the new technology, users open a virtual door and step into a new environment, like a rainforest. After they enter this virtual world, special equipment releases forest-like smells into the air to make the experience feel more real.
Suzanne Fisher-Murray said, “It is a really wonderful experience that you have because you’re exploring this environment and you have smells with it.”
In the United States, Smell-O-Vision was designed to provide smells during the showing of a movie. The Smell-O-Vision system was once popular in the 1960s. Now, Emanuela Maggioni says it is close to becoming popular again. “It connects emotions and memories with the sense of smell,” Maggioni said. “It is un believable what we can do with the technology.”
The uses of smell technology are not just limited to films and the performing arts. Researchers showed a computer program where users could imagine themselves driving a car. The system included a special smell-spraying machine. Dmitrijs Dmitrenko said, “We want to deliver the smell of lavender(薰衣草) every time the person drives over the speed limit. We choose lavender because it’s a very calming smell.”
Scientists are experimenting with smells instead of sounds or image-based alerts on telecommunications equipment. And businessmen have already used smells to influence people’s behavior. “Not only in stores, but also in other places you can create and stimulate(刺激) immediate purchase,” Maggioni said. “So you’re i n a library and when you smell coffee you will unconsciously have the need to drink a coffee.”
1、Using smell technology, researchers make VR environments ________.
A.have a smell of a rainforest
B.even smell like the real ones
C.look like a 4-Denvironment
D.frighten people with a virtual world

A.America is the first to use smell technology
B.cinemas are the most suitable places for the sense of smell
C.smell technology has been used before
D.it is out of date to use smell-spraying devices
3、How is smell technology used by businessmen?
A.To make buyers understand salesmen better.
B.To remind people of their unrealistic purchase.
C.To help customers choose their favorite goods.
D.To stimulate people to buy things.
4、What is the main idea of the passage?
A.The new developments of smell technology.
B.A major breakthrough of VR technology.
C.The sense of smell in human communication.
D.The advanced smell-spraying machines.
25.(10分)My dream of working in a flower shop had its roots in my grandmother's garden, always in bloom, where I made bunches with whatever I could get my hands on. However, I wasn't prepared for the people. Their stories impressed me long after I locked up for the night.
I always enjoyed reading the messages that went along with each bunch. Most were what you would expect, plenty of “I Love Y ou” and “Get Well Soon.” We got “Happy Birthday, ” “Happy Anniversary” and “Thinking of Y ou” requests that phone messages were written in shorthand: H.B., H.A., T.O.Y.
I would laugh at messages that seemed too sugary or boring, and it disheartened me when customers asked what their sympathy card should say. But I also understood that finding the right words can be a monumental task and that sometimes those words just happen to be the same ones everyone else is using.
I have sold flowers to single men and women; to color-blind fathers shopping with their precocious daughters, to new parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, to engaged 20-somethings and couples celebrating 50 years. I've given flowers to homeless men who have in turn given them to pretty girls in summer dresses. People buy flowers when they’re in love, in trouble, drunk, devastated, excited and sometimes for no obvio us reason.
I took photos of card messages and told my favorite shop stories to co-workers, family and friends, but still so much has gotten away. Precious moments made all the more precious by the fact that they have already come and gone. Now I gauge months by what's in season: sunflowers in July, dahlias (大丽花)in August, roses and maple in October, pine in December, hyacinth(风信子)in March.
A favorite of mine is tulip magnolia(紫玉兰), the way the buds(花蕾)break into flowers and the flowers into many colors on lawns, all in a matter of weeks while it's snowing cherry blossoms. How surprisingly beautiful the life of flowers can be.
1、Why did the author like reading the messages going with the bunches?
A.They conveyed friendship, love and best wishes.
B.They reminded the author of his past.
C.They were sugary and the author found them funny.
D.They helped to attract customers to buy flowers.
2、What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A.The messages were boring because of repetitions.
B.The author likes tulip magnolia because of its growing place.
C.The author found it depressing to talk about sympathy cards.
D.The author learned a lot in her grandmother's garden.
3、What does the underlined word "gauge" probably mean in Paragraph 5? A.Spend. B.Forget.
C.Arrange. D.Measure.
4、What does the author learn from the flower shop?
A.She understands that everyone has a favorite flower.
B.She learns that life is more beautiful with flowers.
C.She realizes that flowers sell well with message cards.
D.She finds out that message cards are worth cherishing.
