Three arguments in the reading suggest that hydrogen-based fuel-cell engine has three advantages over the internal-combustion engine in car manufacturing industry. However, the professor thinks that hydrogen-based fuel-cell will not be able to solve the energy problem in car making.
First of all, the author argues that hydrogen can be easily obtained from plentiful resources, which makes it more attractive, while internal-combustion relies on petroleum that will be run out someday. By contrast, the professor challenges this idea by claiming that hydrogen in fact is not that easily available as we thought, because only pure liquid hydrogen can be usable to operate a fuel cell and this pure liquid hydrogen is an artificial substance which can only be produced and stored in cold temperature, making the hydrogen difficult to obtain.
Second, the author suggests that burning oil will produce carbon dioxide, which harms the environment, whereas the only byproduct of hydrogen-based fuel cells is water, which makes the fuel cells more attractive. On the contrary, the professor mentions that in order to acquire pure hydrogen, manufactures have to use purification process which will cost a lot of oil consumption and thus cause harm to the environment. Although cars will not pollute the environment, the purification process will.
Third, the author claims that fuel cells will be more efficient and less expensive. Nevertheless, the professor disagrees with that. She maintains that manufacturing a fuel cell requires an expensive and rare component- Platinum, which means it will not be economically efficient.
