The problem is complicated by the presence of other robots or obstacles in the workspace as in addition to the collision avoidance with the obstacles, the robots have to avoid the collision with the moving robots.For multiple robots, this problem is approached using some combination of two or more different techniques e.g. visibility graph, voronoi diagram, probabilistic roadmaps, which are used for solving the problem for single robot situations.When we look at how the humans move in groups, we find that broadly we can classify the group motions into guarding, escorting, chasing. In this project, we tried to simulated some of these human group behaviors.Back to TopMETHODOLOGYWe have used a distributed approach for planning the motion of the multiple robots. The algorithmproceeds in the following steps:First of all, the workspace (global planner) performs a multi-query PRM to build the graph of accessible nodes. This probabilistic roadmap graph is generated by randomly creating points in the free space and joining those nodes which can be connected by a path.Each robot asks the workspace for the path between its initial and goal configurations. For each robot, retraction is done to the roadmap for initial and goal configurations.Each robot tries to move along the basic path that it has obtained in the previous step avoiding the other robots in its neighborhood. This refinement of the path is done using Potential field method. The robot computes the force applying on it using the potential force function:>= 0f (r) = - c1/r1σ1 + c2/r2σ2, c1, c2Fig. 1 Plots of the potential function for different values of c1, c2, s1, s2.To solve the problem of local minima which is encountered in this approach, we use randomization inthe step length and a random motion when it gets stuck in a position for long. For example, the local minima can occur when two robots are facing each other and want to cross each other.To represent the different kind of interaction between the robots, we have accordingly chosen the values of c1, c2, sigma1, sigma2. For example, two "friend" robots will have a large attractive term but since they can't come very close due to the properties of the robots, they will have a repulsion term which will be dominant when the distance is very small.Back to TopRESULTSHere are some of the results obtained by using the above mentioned approach.Friends robotsThe green robots can choose to follow the red robot or go along their own path. The green robots do not have independent init or goal configurations. They only move guarding the red robot. The guarded red robot may choose to have friends or enemies but the guards have no such choice.
